We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and friendly staff. We were looking for something unique and we found it. The redfish dinner was very good. Two of us ordered the trio and it was ok. I'm glad I tried the 3 items but I won't order that again. The jambalaya was great. The red beans and rice tasted odd to us. And the gumbo was good but not great. The fried shrimp and chicken fried chicken were big hits. The fries were super tasty. We enjoyed the boudin balls but they could use a like more flavor. The portions were good for the prices. The gumbo and crawfish etouffee are the worst I've ever had. Both dishes were cold and some of the crawfish were 100% black.

New to Austin and wanted to indulge in some Frog Legs. This was the closest place that was open when my desire hit. I called kind of late and they must've thought that I wasn't going to show up so the lady go took my order ended up closing up the register for the night. Lucky for me. We happened to be in Manor and wanted to try out a local business. It's a very cute house off 290 and the inside decor is super darling with a a quaint vibe to it. We were greeted by a server and her trainee who were very friendly and attentive. I ordered the cup of Seafood gumbo and my fiancé ordered the bowl of Seafood Gumbo as well as a Crawfish Dinner that came with a side of cream corn and Caesar Salad. Here are the ups and downs of the food: Seafood Gumbo - it was super sour, so the manager brought out another Gumbo which was the Chicken & Sausage - much much better and very tasty! You can't go wrong with fried crawfish - delicious with the dipping sauce it comes with! Cream corn - it was also super sour. I think they use the same roux which caused the seafood and cream corn to be sour - we didn't even complain and put it to the side. Caesar Salad- this did not look home made and was drenched in wayyyy too much dressing. DO NOT order a salad from here. We will come back again and give it a try but because of the excellent customer service and how they handle our sour gumbo - this is why we will be back again! read more

Cute space and all, but the food is the real star here. I started with a cup of gumbo that was rich, hearty, and absolutely delicious. It was a rough choice because everything sounded great, but I ultimately went with the Muffaletta for my main dish. First off, the sandwich is huge. Almost obscenely so (almost). Secondly, it comes with house made fries (perfectly fried and seasoned) which are fantastic. And finally, the taste. All the meats, condiments, and sauces on lightly toasted, fluffy bread, are a flavor explosion in each bite. I'll definitely be back and highly recommend you check it out as well! read more

My daughter & I dropped in to Maxine's Gumbo House for the first time this evening. We went for an early dinner, so we had this cute little place nearly to ourselves. That was nice, since we'd had a stressful day. Service was friendly, accommodating, & quick... without being the least bit pushy. The food we got was delicious!! I ordered what's apparently the specialty, the Stuffed Redfish. OH MY! It was AMAZING! Seriously, you must try this perfectly cooked thick filet that's a salty, super savory, creamy delight. I was very happy I upgraded to the dirty rice as it, too, was great! I got a little more than 1/2 way through this huge plate of food before I had to stop, or burst. lol (*Bonus lunch for tomorrow!) My daughter ordered the Chicken Fried Alligator with milk gravy & Maque Choux as the side. The Alligator tail was thick, mild, and fried to perfection! Daughter swooned over the gravy. For us the Maque Choux could've had a bit more seasoning, but there's hot sauce at the table if you're so inclined. I have a spice intolerant son, so he was skeptical & didn't join us for dinner. Boy did he miss out! The food is seasoned well, but in no way "hot"! We also tried the Cajun Eggrolls, & fresh cut French Fries. So good! Crispy fries and creamy, cheesy, crisp eggrolls. Really...everything was on point, except the lemonade... which the waitress happily changed out with a fountain drink, no problem at all. They clearly know how to cook here, & it's apparent they use quality ingredients. They also hire quality waitpersons who go with the flow, staying friendly & composed through the little hiccups that sometimes happen when dealing with shy or anxious folks. Thank you for that. I'm incredibly sad that we haven't been coming here since they opened. Small businesses need community support... especially here in Manor, so they will stay & thrive. We will absolutely have Maxine's on regular rotation from this point on! Can't wait to go back to try the Boudin Balls, Frogs Legs, Alligator Burger, & Fried Oyster Po'boy over our next few visits... not to mention more of that outstanding Redfish dish! read more

So glad I came here for lunch today. The stuffed redfish was delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly, that stuffing is so flavorful and the sauce is great. Also had a small Caesar salad which was really good too. Highly recommended. Very friendly waitress as well who made me feel very welcome even though I was by myself. Def coming back. This curious joint popped up overnight like an unexpected friend, slowly knocking on the door so that you can open up and be surprised at such a great new meeting.... we went tonight as a consolation for my wife after receiving not so pleasant news. Our server was fantastic! The food, if you don't know what Poutin is, let me just say Chicken Soup cures a soul, Poutin fills you up when your emptied out. We had the Seafood Gumvo and Crawfish Etoufee respectively, both very fresh and warming to our cold hearts this evening. The atmosphere was wonderful! I love the rustic flare of the tables and chairs, and the down in the bayou feel. We must always remember that we don't worship food, so I will leave with this, thank God for you and your restaurant! I came here with my husband tonight for my birthday and my gosh, this place is such a hidden gem!! The server was so on top of it, food came out quick, hot, fresh and freakin delicious!! We got the Cajun egg rolls, jambalaya, and catfish platter. The 5 mini egg rolls were hot, cheesy, stuffed with seafood and tasted so good with the dipping sauce. The jambalaya came in a big bowl that I couldn't finish but am so happy for leftovers tomorrow! The catfish is literally the freshest and flakiest fry my husband and I ever tasted. Wow wow wow!!! The amazing food and service by Carrie absolutely blew us away! We started with the Cajun poutine and I didn't think it could get better than that. We also had the boudin balls and they were out of this world delicious. Between us, we got the stuffed redfish, fried shrimp po boy, red beans & rice, salad with Cajun basil vinaigrette, and fried shrimp basket. Honestly, I can't even pick a favorite of all the things we had because each item was better than the next. Their homemade sauces + dressings are also a highlight. You can tell that love goes into everything here! Carrie was such a delight as our server...she was so sweet, attentive, and made excellent suggestions. She really was the cherry on top of this meal. I was excited when i first saw a gumbo spot in Manor. However i did not have the best of experiences here. I tried to go mid afternoon rush to see how fresh, i would get my food. I would say there grilled shrimp were not only well cooked but they are pretty damn good(hit the spot). Ok if your going to sell a salad. Please make it, dont unzip something, throw it on plate and call it yours. It wasnt even washed ...... Pushed salad aside, i continued on this "Cajun journey". The service is not the best but its not their fault, they are doing the best they can with their skillset. Cuddos to the staff for handling the pressure. I hate bashing places but they need to add some depth to there appetizers, they may have people stay a little longer. I was at this location prior to its remodel and it looks 10x better compared to its predecessor. However i still saw paint from the remodel on the floor. So good job on the paint and a lil paint thinner should do the trick. As far as the rest of the menu, they have some good choices. I tried the chicken fried chicken as im allergic to shellfish, its not the most ideal place for me to eat. I will tell you they dont have seperate friers. So if you have a seafood allergy i would just buy something fried here. My allergies had a small flare up but not bad, thank god. This is why they should use there grills to appease those with allergys and make some beef and vegan sliders or something like that. So then they can target the vegans and burger eaters in the area. I did have the dirty rice and it needed some body to the rice. The sausage over powered the rice. The place is not a total loss i just think its a little early in their venture. Fantastic! A must stop when in the Austin area. We picked the spot for lunch on our drive back to Houston from Austin. First, the restaurant is following appropriate COVID protocols including social distancing with table seating, sanitization, and enforcement of masks. Thank you for taking safety seriously. The food was 100% excellent in every way. Go ahead and drool over the photos and then head right over! We started with the Cajun Poutine. Hot, fresh, and amazing. Fries were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Just enough roast beef and gravy to not overwhelm the fries and make them soggy. For entrees, we got the Crawfish Etouffee & Jambalaya (lunch portion). Even though it was not crawfish season, the crawfish were meaty and tasted fresh. The sauce and bread were just right. It appeared to be freshly prepared with nice chunks of tomato and vegetables. The Jambalaya did not disappoint either. Just spicy enough, not too much. Service was great, helpful with suggestions, prompt, and pleasant. I'm honestly embarassed that I haven't reviewed Maxine's before. We moved to the north-east side a little over 4 years ago and we've loved Maxine's since. My husband and I got married in New Orleans and we love cajun food. Maxine's checks all the boxes: red beans and rice, jambalya, etouffee, gumbo (both seafood and non), boudin (try the boudin balls), poboys, muffulettas, Abita, and bread pudding. The NOLA trio is a great way to try the classics. We also highly recommend the stuffed redfish and catfish pontchartrain from the entrees section. The Bayou Pasta is ideal for a hangover and if you're feeling something light(er), I'd suggest the Maxine's salad with fried crawfish added on. The owners, who actually operate the restaurant, are the best. We don't get out as much with two toddlers, but we always have a good time at Maxine's, with or without them. Definitely check them out and go during crawfish season or Mardi Gras if you can! read more

I was craving gumbo - Cajun food in general - and landed on this spot. We ordered Nola's trio, boudin, oyster platter, crawfish dinner and chicken fried chicken. We were able to pay over the phone/online and pick up was safe - they brought the food to our car. That's worth a full star alone. After that, it was downhill. The red beans and rice tasted spoiled. We did not eat them. The étouffée tasted like rice with tomato sauce and had very little flavor or meat. Didn't eat that. The batter for the oysters and crawfish had no flavor. The chicken wasn't tender. With the high rating, I expected good food. This was anything but. The boudin is why I gave it two stars. It was decent. I would eat that again but it was overpriced. Tried this place for the first, and it was my husband's second time coming! He had been trying to get me to come try it, so I finally did!!! The waitress was sooo nice, friendly, and welcoming! The location was very clean and felt like home!!! We had the cajun egg rolls as an appetizer, so yummy, I ordered the seafood platter and it came with a small cup of gumbo(which was so excited to try!), and my husband had the catfish with some corn sauce on top(pretty big plate)!! The gumbo was horrible. The Italian side of my family is from New Orleans, so I grew up with quality gumbo and this was not it. Boudin was good. My Caesar salad was a Caesar soup, so much dressing. Wouldn't recommend unfortunately. Very nice staff though. read more

We had to try this place out since we live in Manor. Have to say its actually pretty good. There are not too many good restaurants in Manor, fyi. We got the cajun egg rolls which came with 6. They were pretty good. And we shared the seafood platter that included shrimp, crawfish and fries. The fries seemed homemade or at least tasted like it, delicious. The shrimp and crawfish were average. Service was great, friendly and attentive. We will definitely come back to try some more plates. read more

Let me begin by saying I enjoyed the poboys I have had here. So my first dining experience was great. However my second visit, when it comes to the gumbo, pepper is a decent seasoning, but a terrible entree. I bought both the seafood and the chicken and sausage gumbo and they should both be advertised as "Pepper with Gumbo and Rice". There was so much black pepper that it masked the flavor of the roux. I have never had any food other than peppered beef jerky that had this much pepper on it. I really hope this was a one off, but I won't find out because I will never order it again. I ordered a to-go order later in the day so maybe someone wasn't stirring properly and I got what had settled to the bottom, but it was really awful.
