I had a wonderful early lunch at Freda's with a friend on a recent weekday. We arrived around 11:30 am and left around 1 pm. During that time, only a few tables were filled. I certainly hope they got more customers later in the day, because (based on my limited experience) the food, service, and atmosphere are all great. Freda's has been around for about 25 years. Longevity like that is earned. We opted to order from the lunch menu, which has enough choices to suit most people. I got the trout and shrimp ($19), which was nicely plated over seasoned rice and green beans. The lemon/butter/caper sauce was scrumptious. The trout was lightly breaded and crispy, and the shrimp (while slightly overcooked) were very tasty. The green beans were fresh and perfectly cooked. The overall portion size was just right. Before the meal arrived, a wonderful warm homemade cornbread was served with whipped butter. Service was excellent, and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The interior of the restaurant is on the dark side. There's a separate bar area, and outdoor seating is available in better weather. I look forward to my next visit to Freda's!

I find it hard to believe I have never posted a review of Freda's, given all the times we have been there. This time it was for lunch. Oysters on the half shell, Fried Catfish and Fish tacos. Yum. Oddly for a Saturday lunch ( little past 1230PM), it was not very crowded, which of course is neither here nor there. Friendly service, tasty food, and a relaxing time. We will be back. Oh and the cornbread that is provided is delicious.

To start, we have passed by this for years and years, we live down the road but we never stop in. Finally we figured it was time for the former teen's BIRTHDAY meal. There was ample parking when we went, not crowded at all, mid day for us between lunch and dinner. The place is very nice, good lighting, great décor and lots of plants. The lighting is subdued and works well. We all started off with drinks, I got an old fashioned as it is becoming my drink of choice, Shana got a Mexican Martini, and M got a Mango martini then an expresso martini. All were very good. The cornbread they supply was amazing, just so so good. The former Teen and Shana got calamari with Marinara and Salsa Verde and they both loved it, not something I enjoy so I didn't try it. Shana got the Pecan Crusted Tilapia which was fantastic according to her. The former Teen got a shrimp and crawfish etouffee and raved about it. I got a shrimp and andouille sausage gumbo cup and then the shrimp and andouille sausage pasta. The gumbo was the chef's kiss, the roux was perfect. The pasta while still good was not as good as everything else in my opinion, I would have stuck to a larger Gumbo but wanted to try. If I had one complaint or something to work on, while the shrimp is plentiful as is the crawfish, the sausage is limited in both meals. I am more a sausage guy then shrimp and would have liked more of that, though the shrimp was good. The waitress was friendly, checked in without hovering, and answered all our questions. The food was mostly prompt, there was a slight delay on the French Bread we ordered which was a delight. We did get a bread pudding to go, so we ate that at home and it was tasty even not right out of the kitchen. While Shana and the FT loved it more then I did, it was still very good. It is a bit on the pricey side so be prepared for that, not outrageous but higher end so be mindful. It is a lovely place with good food and a fast staff. Due to pricing and location being easy to forget it won't be a regular but for a birthday or special event will we try to remember.

Freda's is a nice place to take a date or just chill out. It offers several different menu items. I personally like their raw oysters. It is one of my go to items when I come here and I usually get 1 dozen that I share with a friend or eat them all by myself. There are steaks, pasta and fish as well as soups and salads. I like going on a Friday or Saturday evening and hanging in the bar. They have a musician who plays the keyboard or sax. Very nice music to listen to. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu and do their best to ensure you are taken care of. I would like to give a shout out to Nicole. I've had the pleasure or her being my server and couple of times. I can only say she is awesome!

Had another one of frida's wonderful wine dinner last night september eighteenth. The wines featured were from Daou and perfectly matched with the food. Freda is a consummate hostess as is her lovely daughter, Crystal. A l8cal gem, this is a favorite go to spot!!

Y'all! I considered Freda's a hidden gem, off the main path. I've only dined here for dinner anout 5 times but The service has always been friendly. The food has always been delicious. My goal is to come for the buffet on the weekend. I hear it is top tier. Gotta get me some of that. Don't forget to get the complimentary bread and butter when it comes fresh out of the oven. And be sure to ask what the chef's special is for the day. P.S. they have a great wine menu but I always get the house red wine. It'sa cab and I love it.

I really like the ambiance at Freda's its low lit lights makes it romantic.I have been for brunch and enjoyed the bread pudding and combination of different dishes, well worth the price. We went recently for a birthday dinner and the dishes were lacking. The fried catfish is not traditional cornmeal fried, it's done with panko crumbs and lacked seasoning. The etoufee sauce was good but the shrimp and crawfish had no flavor, without the sauce it was a flop. Now the Sword Fish and mushroom risotto was amazing! They should add it to the menu as a regular item. The cream sauce adds a little flare and that risotto makes it razzle dazzle. All together I think it was just a miss on the etoufee but for the price it shouldn't be a miss.

    Crab cake

The crab cake was phenomenal, one of the best I've had in a while. The jalapeno adds a nice and unique kick to this classic. A great heaping portion as well. Something I would get on every visit back if I have the chance. I was looking forward to trying the rainbow trout Alexander but unfortunately they had run out of rainbow trout that day. The chef came out and expressed his regret and was so kind about the whole situation, totally did not need to do that but such a thoughtful gesture. Instead I had the salmon Alexander and stumbled into a really amazing dish. The salmon was cooked really nicely, the crab topping was extraordinary, and the pesto rice which I've never heard of before was awesome. The setting here is a nice dinner out, perfect for a date or family celebration. The bar is quite large and separated from the dining room. I could see it being a great bar to have a drink. I have come here a few times whenever I'm in town to see family. This place really is great, always look forward to it.

Freda's Seafood grille is a hidden gem. In order to get to the restaurant you have to do a U-turn off Hwy 183. After entering the large wooden doors you were opened to a dimly lit restaurant that was akin to a speak easy. It had Louisana Creole styled menu and flavor. Luke, our waitor, immediately greeted us and asked if we wanted anything to drink. We ordered the peach martini and tea. The peach martini had vodka with a peach liquer that floated in your mouth lite and airy. The tea was strong and flavorful. Luke did a good job looking after us. Next we experienced the appetizers, iceburg salad and gumbo with cornbread. The iceburg lettuce salad was draped with a thick piece of crisp pepper bacan with tomato and salad dressing...so yummy! OMG, the gumbo was the best I've ever tasted...an explosion of flavors in your mouth...large shrimp expertly cooked, anduille sausage (very uncommon for gumbo in Austin) and a rhue that want to make you slap your thigh. : ) Oh Yeah...the cornbread, the best I've eaten in Austin. The cornbread was a bit sweet, buttery and literally melted in your mouth. The cornbread had real pieces of corn inside. I am little ashamed to say we had two servings. All winners!!! Bring on the entrees...coconut shrimp and catfish and crab stuffed salmon. The portions were large....enough for two people to eat one meal. The catfish was lightly battered with big pieces of catfish and the shrimp was delicious. We both packed up half our meals to go. At this point, I'm too full to eat another bite...so I thought. We were celebrating a birthday and Freda's provided a complementary Creme Brulee dessert. I'm not a fan of Creme Brulee generally, however, this one was different. It was lightly toasted with a thick flavorful pudding. Yum to the nth degree!!! I would definitely recommend Freda's for a date night!

    Casey D.

Homemade Butter I really love the cornbread. It's not sugary like most, so you can actually taste the flavors. They make the butter in-house too. The entrees have a Cajun flair, so expect stuff like Étouffée poured over blackened catfish.

    brussel sprouts
    Helen H.

does anybody ever think to themselves "i'm too picky"???? i fear this may be the case for me im VERY picky with seafood and i have high standards but even just the brussel sprouts dish was so weird to me--sweet chili sauce lifted straight out of the bottle in the asian aisle of a kroger or from the little packets at the chinese takeout store, balsamic glaze on Top of that somehow, and then cotija cheese crumbles... OK!!! OK I GET IT THEY HAVE FLAVOR!!!!! enough pleas..e... please... Im begging... it was just such a strange combination to me personally... those same brussel sprouts are underneat the crab stuffed salmon, in which the crab stuffing is also very clearly what they use for a crab cake too, which makes sense food-wise i just mean like. so my entree was jigsawed from two starters, ? :( Whateva . it aint for me. oysters were fine, moscow mule was pretty good (a nice strong ginger beer), service was fine my friend from texas enjoyed it so maybe its just not for me sorry that im from another state ...

Cornbread automatically brought to the table...delish!

Since it was this new and poppin' restaurant on East Cesar Chavez from the team behind De Nada, we had over an hour wait that we didn't take up. Its vibe intrigued me, and I think Cajun food is top five like Tatum with a cut. I decided to prepare only slightly this time. While getting dinner with a friend, we were discussing places when I suggested Lil' Easy. I threw a reservation down for an hour later at one of their numerous dining options. Upon arrival, parking at that little strip of restaurants on East Cesar Chavez is a bit treacherous. If you're not afraid of getting your steps in at 6 pm on a Friday, don't sweat it. Anyone else, good luck. There are a lot of different seating arrangements at Lil' Easy: the true outdoor patio with fans and umbrellas, the climate-controlled outdoor space that still brings the sun while still pumping A/C, and the traditional indoor space. Plenty of seating. The entire place was decorated with Mardi Gras beads and colors. Off the rip, we had to set the tone: I ordered a Pimm's Cup while my friend got some secret frozen swirl. We had to throw down an order of the Crawfish Queso as well. The food and drinks were served so quickly, we questioned if it was ours. The queso was De Nada's signature queso with Crawfish Étouffée mixed in. There are no tortilla chips on the side, but instead toasted bread. It's kinda like a DIY Crostini. The crawfish's flavor is a unique and savory balance to the cheesiness of the queso. Very delightful. We crushed it. My friend wanted to go wild. Another appetizer?? Their Shrimp Cocktail was thrown down immediately after ordering. The shrimp was great, but those house pickles were sneakily one of the best things they served us. Living the high life. Speaking of that, I ordered a High Life Pony as we made our main orders: a Fried Catfish Po'Boy and Fried Oyster Po'Boy. Both cut down the middle so we could have a little this, a little that. I think the bread, the catfish and the oysters, and the fries served alongside it were all incredible. My only issue was that the catfish po'boy had horseradish in it. That is a me issue, and I don't know why I can't stand horseradish. I don't know if it was hiding in their coleslaw or their rémoulade, but something was horseradish-y! I'd get the oyster po'boy again and again though! We closed the night with me being fun as I ordered their Frozen Espresso Martini with sprinkles and whipped cream because some other lady sitting nearby had that, and I WANTED TO BE FUN TOO. My friend got herself the seasonal nonalcoholic Arnold Palmer that was spiked with some Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka. Hers was great, but mine was basically a milkshake. I looked like a joyous kid with my drink. I was so very happy. They do give you lids for your drinks if you want to take them with you, but I planned to finish mine then and there. The gimme cups are also a nice touch and have their cute alligator mascot on them. Throughout the night, we could not believe how fast the service was at getting our meals and our drinks to us. Our waitress was absolutely on point the entire time we were there, constantly checking in on us and being extremely friendly and helpful in making sure we chose the right things and had a good meal ahead of us. Lil' Easy is casual, fun, and absolutely delicious. They have some of the best frozens in Austin, and their food is some of the best seafood and Cajun food I've had in Austin, hands down. Get over here. RIYL: crawfish and cocktails

The waitress is very helpful and nice. I came here because I kept hearing good things about the crawfish. I have to say the crawfish was OK. There is nothing amazing about it, but it was good. I will say the corn and the onion were beyond spicy, but that was a nice kick. We also got the oysters. I have to say that the oysters were delicious so I give them that. The gumball was definitely missing a lot of flavor. It was it that good. The deviled eggs were mediocre and nothing special to them. We also got a meat. Patty empanada kind of deal and that was OK. It was a little overly greasy. And for dessert, we got the banana rum cake, which I have to say was nice but again nothing special. As for drinks, they had quite a variation. One of us got the espresso martini, which was OK. It was too sweet for my taste. And then I got the spritz which was nice. It's very hard to mess up a spritz. Not sure I would've come back just because the food was OK if I did come back, it would be for the oysters cause I do say that was really good for them.

We tried to go to happy hour with my partner's parents, but that was only available in the bar area. Given they have some health problems to consider, we could not move over and hover over teeny tables to have dinner so had to handle full price. At full price, I'd give it a solid 3.5. Bumped to a 4 because this is hard to find around here. We got: - shrimp yoli (if you only order one dish, get one with this SAUCE. It's to die for. The shrimp had too much seasoning that it was a little choke worthy and I NEVER complain about flavor. Just lighten up a little!) - escargot (the butter was broken.. so it was kinda rough) -catfish gumbo (solid portion) -redfish add lump crab (while we enjoyed this, it was pricy for what it was) -shrimp and crawfish pasta (good) -orange crème brûlée (light.. not my fav crème brûlée ever but fun to try) - chocolate cake brownie with ice cream

The second time was at Joes crab Shack and the crab there was empty and they mixed up the flavors with the incredibly spicy one. Like the saying goes third times the charm. Came here with my fiancé over the weekend. First and foremost the service was great. Our server was very friendly and helpful. She also informed us that they had an all day happy hour so we ordered a pitcher of margarita. Everything came out fast, the flavors were great, and for the price the amount in the bag was great. Will definitely be coming back.

We each had a catfish and shrimp combo and the servings were generous and perfectly seasoned. The owner, Antonio, was very enthusiastic and made our visit a fun outing. He really worked the crowd going table to table checking on customers and thanking them for coming. The restaurant had a really festive atmosphere like one big family. We will definitely be back to try the chicken wings. They looked delicious on others' plates.

THIS SH** LITERALLLY WHIPPED UP SOUL!!!!…read more Hands down, this is the best Soul Food in Austin, TX. My girlfriend and I have been here 4 times in counting. Every time we come, we have been satisfied. This is a black-owned restaurant and babiiesss, this is one for the books. The best times to come are early before 5. SUNDAYS ARE SUPER BUSY, (line out the door busy), so beware of that. Let's start with the service, the owner is HIM. Every time we've come, he's greeting everyone that comes in with a calm, cool, welcoming, and assured demeanor about himself while taking orders. When he has the chance, he comes by the tables and checks in with everyone, making sure everyone is satisfied and the place is up to his standards. This man is the definition of #HANDSON! It's needed. He doesn't know it, but we really value him. The Ambiance is usually way more busier, energetic like. However, today we came closer to opening @ 11:15am and was able to enjoy sitting down without the rush. It's always great music playing, so you know I'm jamming :P The cooks keep hair nets on their heads and gloves on. It's somewhat an open window kitchen so that's cool too. There's usually a cleaning lady going around making sure the place stays clean and tables rotating. The prices aren't bad. They did just increase since the last we been here, but they're still affordable. Now for the food WITH SOULLLL... Since we've been here so many times, I'll give you the MUST TRYs! These are delicious, delightful and your tastebuds will love you for it. Plus the portions are generous and never lack in flavor. #ComfortingFood 1. Oxtail Eggrolls $14 2. Cheezy Mac (regular) $6 3. Sweet Glazed Yams (regular) $6 4. Mean Greens (regular) $6 5. Pistachio Brownie (when available) 6. Sweet Tea $3.75 7. Fried Cabbage (Weekend Side Special) My rating... this place is definitive of SOUL. It's consistent, clean, and carries the vibes! One thing about it, whether you're vegetarian or loving the meat, you'll find something to love that will lighten your soul. It's been hard to find QUALITY food here in Austin, but we found it in 'WHIP MY SOUL'. So GO, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! You won't be disappointed.
