So we ordered from their lunch menu, typical American Chinese fare....salad, hot and sour soup, with a choice of chow mein, fried rice or plain rice. Tried their General Chicken-a sweet version of sweet and sour fried chicken...ok only with a good portion of chow mein. Next the garlic eggplant with rice...eggplant undercooked in a sweet sauce and a large portion of rice. Both were ok. We were looking for a shabu shabu restaurant for hot pot and there weren't many in Santa Rosa. With the help of Yelp we found Boiling Bowl and it's wonderful! I think it's the best Chinese restaurant in Santa Rosa! My wife had the vegetable hot pot and it hit the spot! The weather was rainy and the hearty soup was very soothing. I got the beef chow fun and was so glad to see how authentic it was. They even had the Chinese mustard sauce to complement the noodles which I grew up with as a kid. Was looking for a Chinese restaurant to get some lunch with the family. Usually always use the yelp app to search for a new place when my current place is 3 cities away. Good review and close to home. I decided to try it. The location looks closed because of the tinted windows, but they have a open neon light on. Got the chicken broccoli, pawns fried rice, and crab rangoons. All was so good and the portions for entrees were good size more than I could ask for. I'll just put it like this. You know the white To-go containers they pack the food? Well this place packs them better. They pack them in the black round container/clear lid. On our way to the airport, we wanted to have a hearty and warm lunch since it had been chilly and rainy for two days while we were in Napa. We originally wanted shabu shabu, but we couldn't find it anywhere in Napa or Santa Rosa, and this place was the only restaurant that had something close to it. The menu and food photos weren't too appealing, but because of the good Yelp rating, we decided to give this place a try. What a HIDDEN GEM. Just recently we had heard about this restaurant, but had not had the chance to try it out until this last week. The inside was clean and there is a beautiful window inside to separate the door from the rest of the space. It was a Wednesday night and things looked slow (so of course we were worried). There were 6 adults and one 5 year old on our group and everyone left with a full stomach. Each dish had its own flavors and the meats were cooked to perfection. They have a HUGE menu (158 items I believe). And I can not wait to try them all. The sizzling rice soup was hot and flavorful. And had so much stuff in it. It was more than enough for 6 of us to share a large. We ordered the salt and pepper pork chops (best we've had), the mu shu pork (full of flavor and large pieces of meat...again the best we've had), house chow fun, broccoli with oyster sauce, both the shu mai and shrimp dumplings, and orange chicken. Came here for the hot pot and the hot pot only. Since there are very few places that offer any style of hot pot in Sonoma county, I was super excited. They offer pre determined hot pots with adjustable spice levels. They're served in individual pots on the gel flame boxes. Bonus points for coming with a side of rice or ramen noodle. I got the lamb hot pot with the spiciest option (sorry for ugly photo). I thought it was a decent spice level. They also offer additional spice to add if you want it spicer. With all of it added, it was mildly spicier. There were a few sichuan peppercorns in the broth and I only noticed when I bit into them since the broth itself wasn't very mala. If you're a spice demon, it's not that spicy. I could see how it could be spicy to others though. Don't get me wrong, the broth was flavorful and still satisfied my hot pot craving. Worth it for $23.99. Service speed was struggling a bit when we went at 6pm on a weekday. No biggie though, the workers were nice. read more

We're always excited to try a new Asian restaurant, especially one that is earning good reviews. We dropped in on a Friday for lunch. The interior is quite pleasing and larger than I expected. They have tables and booth seating. Everything looked clean and new. The employees greeted us immediately as we entered and let us pick our table. They have an extensive menu featuring hot pots and a full array of dishes, including a few dim sum dishes. Since we were there for lunch, we decided to try two of their lunch specials and added a side of salt and pepper pork chops. They include a choice of either won ton or hot & sour soup along with a small iceberg lettuce salad and a choice of fried rice, chow mein or steamed rice. We decided on the eggplant with garlic sauce and house special beef. Soup and salads came out quickly. I enjoyed my won ton soup. The meat was flavored well and the broth was clean tasting. My husband's hot and sour soup was spicy but didn't seem robust like most we have had plus there were pieces of fresh tomato inside, which I understand is added for flavor and texture. The salads are a nice addition but consisted of just plain iceberg lettuce with a light dressing. Our lunches tasted fine, however, my house special beef came on a bed of lettuce and had granules of sugar (or something like sugar) that I noticed as I chewed, which made the meat on the sweeter side. I was not expecting this. Fried rice was very good. My husband had ordered half fried rice and half chow mein. He said the noodles were nice and chewy and the fried rice was a good texture and well flavored. The eggplant was a pretty color and cooked perfectly. We were disappointed with the salt and pepper pork chops. This is the first time we've not enjoyed this dish. Not sure if it's the seasoning or the oil that was used. We noticed it immediately. My boyfriend says this is one place he'd give 5 stars! Lovely decor, very clean, wonderful service and delicious food. We only had the vegetable hot pot and chicken fried rice but loved both. Vegetables were cooked to (our) perfection - al dente broccoli, bok choy, lotus root, tofu skin, noodles and much more. I think the broth could be more flavorful but we got the spicy sauce on the side which improves the flavor, but it is spicy. Loved the fried rice! Overall not the best Chinese food I've had recently but still really good especially for the area. I'm looking forward to more. It's in an unexpected spot to be so nice. Tried this place on Monday for lunch. The restaurant is very spacious, clean and inviting with lots of booths plus tables. Friendly staff. The best thing was that the dishes were spicy and flavorful. Thai Curry prawns and Thai Curry calamari. The calamari were sautéed with va lots of fresh vegetables and a tasty sauce. The lunch menu includes soup ( hot and sour), rice or noodles and a generous fresh salad. We left with full stomachs and a desire to come back since the menu choices are huge. After a walk around Spring Lake on a rainy day, hot and sour soup sounded glorious. I love a good lunch special, and we were right in time for it! We both got hot and sour soup, a salad of shredded iceberg lettuce with dressing, orange chicken and chow Mein. Soup hit the spot, right amount of heat for me. That salad did not look great, and we were both unamused at its basicness, until we tried it. I don't know what magic is in that dressing but whew did it make iceberg taste delicious!! Like really good. We were flabbergasted and ate every shred. Our main was delicious. I have not noticed if other orange chicken had ginger in the sauce, but I noticed it in their sauce, and it was delightful. Chicken was nicely fried and the sauce hit all the right notes. The chow Mein did too, spot on! It was a good size portion, we both took home leftovers. Our server was very attentive; there was a steady flow of folks dining but it never got too busy. It was a chill afternoon. I am only taking off a star because of the gas. I don't know which dish was to blame but my friend and I later checked in with each other and were suffering the same symptom, crazy bloat and gas afterwards. I've been to Boiling Bowl three times now, and it's become one of my go-to spots in town. I really enjoy their hot pot option that's made for one to two people. It's not the type where you add the ingredients yourself -- it comes out fully assembled and served over an open flame. The only downside is that you can't really control the doneness as you eat, so by the end, some of the food can get a little overcooked. I recommend fishing out your seafood or thinly sliced meat early if you like them more tender. Still, it's flavorful, hearty, and such a fun presentation. I've also tried the Singapore noodles (so good!), the spicy green beans (fantastic -- packed with flavor and perfectly cooked), and the shumai, which come as six large, juicy pieces that are super satisfying. The calamari is another standout -- incredibly fresh, lightly battered, and absolutely delicious. Honestly, I haven't had anything here that I didn't like. The service has always been excellent -- attentive and friendly, though you may need to ask for the check when you're ready to go. They also have lunch specials, which I haven't tried yet, but if they're anything like the à la carte dishes, they're probably a great deal. We've also had the orange chicken and sesame chicken, both flavorful and well-balanced without being overly sweet. Everything here has been consistently good, and I'll definitely be back again soon. Wow everything was delicious. We kinda came for the hotpot but they did not use bone broth just water the seafood and spices. But the three dishes we got were yummy the tofu was slightly sweet almost hint of sweet and sour but they said it was Szechuan style. The beef with black mushrooms was also good but my favorite was the crispy salted pepper fish filets . All in all this was impressive for our first visit nice open dining room plenty of spacing. The salt and pepper fish was tasty (delicate white fish fried tempura-like), and I got the garlic broccoli to go with it (nice veggie side, though the sauce was a little too sweet for my taste). The menu options for hot pot looked great- they are meant for single serving however is large enough to share. We also order subsume and appetizers however, I can't say any of the dishes were above okay. The presentation of hot pot was lovely but flavor-wise we weren't impressed. We were somewhat disappointed and we were hoping for new fave spot. The crab in the Japanese hot pot was not fresh- it was mushy and crumbled, it may just have been our luck so maybe someone else had a better experience. The dim sum was also just okay. This place must have opened up recently. It's located in a small Plaza tucked in a corner. It was not busy when I arrived. Could have been the rain, holidays, or it's location. We were promptly seated in a seat of our choice: table or booth. This is a pre-made hotpot location with other Chinese and dim sum options. I'll focus more on the hot pot as all I got from the other dishes was a spinach stir fry which was pretty good but hard to really mess that up. The hot pot option range from seafood, beef, and veggies options. These options come pre set with various other items but you mainly choose the main protein. I think the main thing to point out is the price. A whole bowl of hotpot is $24 which is an insanely fair deal imo from someone who frequently visit hotpot places all over. You can also decide in the spice level. Medium is not too mild and does have some kick so ymmv based on your spice tolerance. Anyways for the price and given it's santa rosa, this is a pretty fair price as anything similar would require a trip closer to more Asian dense cities in the bay area. read more

It's so nice to have an affordable, tasty, Chinese food choice to give us some change from our go-to,Ting Hau, downtown. What's different here? The menu is extensive! Kevin, the owner and friendly host, is bright, funny, and whips up a house made Chinese mustard to boot! It could use some decorative art to spruce up the space. But it is clean and inviting, if the walls are a bit barren. We tried the Beef Hot Pot- which you can see from the photos, sits on its own little warmer on the table. Filled to the brim with delicious broth, thinly sliced beef, mushrooms, cabbage, fish, balls, clams, mussels, and all kinds of veggies, like bok choy and others. The ingredients were fresh and very tasty. We shared the hot pot and also ordered shrimp dumplings. This is when I asked Kevin for some mustard and he told me that he makes his own. Definitely ask because it is tasty! The shrimp were very good. There is a lot more on this menu that we'd like to try, but the portions here are very large and it was just the two of us! We will be back. If you're looking for an affordable, tasty locally owned Chinese food restaurant, we suggest you give Boiling Bowl a try. I would have given this one star but I felt generous because we ate dinner on Christmas day. However, it wasn't the servers that rated so low, it was the food. Our egg rolls were filled with soggy cabbage that was difficult to eat. The lamb boiling bowl was overcooked when it arrived. The mussels and clams were rubbery. The small slices of lamb were shredded. The servers were doing their best and should be acknowledged for all their hard work on a holiday. The decor is a marked improvement from the old building.
