Honestly believe this place has good food, but it comes with a caveat. Ordered sesame chicken but when I took a bite out of one piece and noticed had hardly any chicken in it, mostly filler. In disbelief I took another piece and cut it in half, same deal. Not willing to pay $17 for a sesame chicken dinner with soup that only has 20% meat with the rest as breading. I have definitely had better food, but I decided to rate this place three stars for the good service, nice, clean environment and the variety of options they serve. I had the Curry Chicken in Peanut sauce, my husband had the Special Pho and we shared two Vietnamese egg rolls. The curry chicken was decent. It is served with brown rice, without asking for it. The Vietnamese egg rolls were stale and hard and overly chewy. They would probably be really good if made fresh. The Pho was severely lacking in classic Pho flavor. Because it was cold out, my husband "fixed-it-up" with sriracha, lime and herbs and ate it anyway. I uploaded newer pictures because the old ones are not representative of May Wah anymore. read more

This place deserves 3 stars, maybe 2.5 if that was an option. A year ago I would have given this place 4 stars, but in the four years I have been in Boulder I have only seen this place go down hill. The reason I am giving this a low review is that the pho is a bit bland. They really have started to be very frugal with their noodles and meat as well. It is about $9 for $5 worth of food. You may be better off going somewhere else. The service is mediocre/bad, but to be fair that may just be the loudness that is associated with the more traditional Southeast/East Asian Culture. A lot of the servers will be Vietnamese or Chinese and they may yell at you, but it's not necessarily meant to be rude. I am drawing upon inferences I am making based on my own upbringing (I am Vietnamese). For example during my last meal here: Waitress: Do you want anything to drink? Me: No thank you, I am fine. Love May Wah! Family run restaurant, with great service. They just redesigned the interior so it looks modern. But that doesn't matter as much as the food. Delicious food! They cook Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese! YUMMMM!! On this visit, we ordered the Spring rolls, with shrimp and tofu with a peanut sauce that is sooooo good. The restaurant is a bit sketchy looking form the outside. I always become concerned when an Asian restaurant serves three different types of Asian food but my friend invited me so I went along for the ride. I ordered drunken noodles and they were actually pretty good. The noodles were very tasty and the dish had the right heat. This place has always had decent food. The ladies that work the front and take orders were never friendly but of late have turned down right rude. When taking orders via phone they seem to be annoyed that some wants to place an order for take out - go figure! Also when they made a mistake on the order and i called to complain, the woman had the audacity to blame me. On top of that when I went back to pick up the correct order a It was wrong again! With No an apology whatsoever. Update 11/2018: after the last few phone order fiascos, I went in person and placed the order for three entrees two rice and curry items and a third noodle dish. Excellent food. We had it delivered to our hotel. While the food was great, they forgot forks for all 3 of us so I ate with my feet. Kidding. The food was well done. No napkins either. What? Five stars? I was a little skeptical when I saw Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai all in one place, but options for Chinese food (and Asian food in general) are slim in Boulder. That being said, I was really impressed with the Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese options we got. Yes, the Chinese falls on the Americanized side of the spectrum, but are still tasty and the Thai dishes are properly spicy (not true Thailand spicy, but better than most American Thai restaurants). The Vietnamese options are good too and properly seasoned from a fish sauce perspective. Is it the best of any of these cuisines? Of course not, is it really good and hit the spot when you're craving Asian food that's not trendy or chain spots? Yes...and to top it off, it's family run and the service is friendly, efficient and quick. Also a spotlessly clean restaurant is a win. read more

This place can be a bit tricky, the menu is extremely hit-or-miss, but when it's a hit, it's excellent! If at all possible, I would highly suggest you refrain from ordering any sort of Thai food, but oddly enough, the Vietnamese selection is pretty strong and the Rice-Paper-Wraps are absolutely amazing (and the main reason they landed 3 stars) The rice-paper wraps may seem a bit pricey initially (I believe the pork or beef version tends to fluctuate between 12.95-14.95) but it is easily enough food to feed two women or a rather hungry fella. Honestly, this may sound sacrilegious, but May Wah's platter is much tastier, higher quality beef (and oddly enough I suspect a better price) than many of the places on Federal Blvd (New Saigon, Saigon Bowl, etc) Further explanation: this is essentially a "make-your-own" spring-roll platter where the rice papers are brought out with a steaming bowl of water to soften them up and then the platter itself usually includes grilled beef/pork, lettuce, cilantro, mint, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, fried shallots, beansprouts and rice noodles along with the traditional Vietnamese Nuoc Cham. I have had friends order the Pad Thai and the Panang curry, and would definitely intervene in any future trips there. The noodles on the Pad Thai were lacking sauce/flavor and were a bit dry whereas the curry oddly enough seemed to have peanut butter, which one might expect in some renditions of Massamun but not with Panang (as far as I am aware of). Again, this is a Chinese-run restaurant that happens to be quite talented with Vietnamese, so stick to those and avoid the Thai! While the regular waitress is far from friendly, things tend to go much better if you keep in mind she's more of an "authentic" Chinese server, extremely efficient, gets you what you need (water, forks, etc) but will not be there to inquire as to how your day went or provide a detailed opinion on the merits of Thai Fried Rice when compared with the Cashew Chicken. read more

The inside is charming in its own way, though it's difficult to be distinct in the little plaza that it's in. Went there for lunch today, the food was decent but they gouged me on the price. Let me explain: I wanted vegetables in a garlic sauce, the waiter took my order and came back to tell me they would have to charge me dinner prices because that wasnt on the menu despite the fact they have several dishes that have garlic sauce on their lunch menu as well as a tofu and vegetable dish! They ended up charging me 8.95 which is $2 more than the other tofu and veg dish, plus they charged me $1.40 for the soup which is normally included in the lunch deal! I dont care about the money, its the principal that irritates me. They were blatantly overcharging me. I explained to my waiter that I was dissatisfied and wouldnt be back. Average Chinese food. I went here with a business associate for lunch and had a small bowl of egg drop soup and the Mongolian beef (which comes with a spring roll). The soup was only warm and very thick (more than I like), but otherwise tasty. The beef was better - hot, flavorful and well cooked - and a good sized portion. The dish also included fried rice. My associate had the hot & sour soup and sweet & sour chicken and said they were good. All in all, I wouldn't call May-wah a great Chinese restaurant (which also features some Thai and Vietnamese dishes), but it's not bad either. The word "average" sums it up well. It's also very reasonably priced for what you get ($17 for both of us, not including tip) and the service - while not overly friendly - was fast and efficient. read more

We've been eating here for 10+ years and we're always happy. The food is consistently delicious and the prices (especially at lunch) are very good. My favorite thing on the menu is the Vietnamese rice noodle bowl--a large portion for the price; comes with a yummy Vietnamese eggroll. All of the available meats & tofu are super tasty. (Best noodle bowl in Boulder, IMO). The Chinese dishes, rice paper wraps, lo mein, and satay are also delicious. We've never been disappointed. However, I would agree with the comments about the wait staff. The hostess/owner in particular is very unpleasant, but we've been going there long enough that some of the wait staff recognize us and are always very friendly. Not very kid-friendly...there is not a kid's menu and the kind of quiet environment isn't very great for rambunctious little ones either. And cleanliness is questionable. read more

This place was some of the most awful Chinese food I've EVER had. Seriously, can I give no stars? We ordered a few dishes, can't remember what exactly it was...I think one was Basil Chicken. Regardless, every dish we got tasted exactly the same and was soaked in brown oily sauce. What irked me the most was one of the dishes was supposed to be a noodle dish, and I kid you not, instead of real rice noodles they threw a few crisy noddles on the top of the dish (like the stuff on an asian salad). I know change can be scary but May Wah only gets better and better. I've been a regular for years, at least 25 years. Recently they updated the entire restaurant.... it is gorgeous, clean, and modernized. All new tile, tables, bathrooms, everything. With more gorgeous additions to come. I'm really impressed with the detail and obvious love this family has with their longstanding business and love of their patrons. Like any great business, they are invested in the future to remain relevant and meeting customer needs. The food remains always delicious and the staff all sweet and accommodating.
