There was a long wait to be seated, so we ordered from the to-go counter and sat in one of the front tables. The real deal Mexican in good ol' Minnesota. I am not from Mexico, nor have I grown up eating Mexican. But I know good food and when you see a place make its own tortillas for tacos , mash a whole big bowl of fresh avocados for their guacamole in an open kitchen , serve habanero salsa in their condiment section, you know it's authentic. Barbacoa, chorizo , slow roasted pork and chicken served over warm homemade tortillas with fixings that included spicy salsas was a tasty mouthful of simple Mexican food. Alright.. -snaps up keyboard- Maya Cuisine. I came here around 9:57 to see that they were actually still closed. (Note: Change the hours on yelp.) They open at 10 and I slowly strolled around the block and then walked in. I thought to myself, "Oh my, first customer of the day." The gentleman who was helping me asked if it was my first time in, and then proceed to direct me to their paper menu. At first glace, they probably only make tacos, but they make a wide variety of different foods from soup to taco salads. I myself ordered the Pozole; which comes with 2 tostadas(~8.75) and 1 taco that was shredded pork and pineapple(2.25). The gentleman who helped me and prepared my food also asked about the condiments on top; which of course is a sign of a employee who cares, but then again I was the first customer of the day. He also mentioned that they have the hot sauce and seasoning over in the salsa bar for the red pozole; which is my favorite. I went over to the salsa bar and there you can also find water if you order water for a drink. They had corn salsa, pico de gallo, multiple different salsa's (salsa verde and others as well, that I didn't know the name of), radish bits, shredded lettuce and other things as well. I sat down and first bit into my taco. It only took two bites to eat the whole thing; but man... was it good. I added the salsa verde, corn salsa and pico on top but man.. The flavorful meat still came through. It wasn't spicy; for those who are fearful of too spicy, until I added the salsa verde. All in all, that taco.. I would do again...and again.... The Pozole, which is a homy based soup; was alright. I have had authentic Pozole before; but that is long gone as for it was a celebration at a Wendy's with my fellow managers and co-workers, but that is a tale I shall save for spinning. I had asked the gentleman who had fixed my food to make sure to add plenty of onions; because I have a deep love for onions. I had also added the red pozole sauce which is different from the adobo sauce that I usually put in my own. But it still added in that kick of spice which was delicious but after eating most of the pozole I could only feel the heat. I thought that the pozole was a fair 3/5. But that is just me and my favoritism to red pozole. Note: I am not Hispanic, and this is only my point of view and my review with my history and experiences with authentic Hispanic foods. Great place, great food with great flavor! The decor inside is sort of what you would see in a Mexican restaurant. I ordered the torta (sandwiches) and got myself some pork shoulder. Can't really remember how it's spelled in the menu but it is fantastic. You know what's the really amazing part? They have avocado salsa in the open bar area you can sprinkle uncontrollably on your nachos!! This place in general is just like a canteen with a kind of eat-what-you-want-do-what-you-like vibe - but of course with good authentic Mexican taste. If you're looking for more of a fast food style, quick meal, they have a service station in the front. The prices are affordable with generous amounts of food. The news has been buzzing lately about "a Mexican food truck on every corner," so I had a hankering. We gave Maya Cuisine a try and were glad we did. The patio space and the restaurant itself were cozy in a neighborhood-joint kind of way. There was a nice mix of people on the patio that matched the eclectic neighborhood -- students, families, tattooed hipsters. The server was friendly, and so was everybody else who worked there -- they definitely conveyed a sense of pride in the restaurant. The menu had some unique offerings that you don't usually see at local Mexican places. I had the enchiladas with outstanding mole sauce and two sunny side eggs on top -- delicious. My husband had shrimp tacos, which were fresh and tasty. I also had a big ol' margarita, which was kind of weak, but refreshing -- I mean, you can't beat sitting in on a cozy urban patio on a late summer evening with a margarita, right? We spied other dishes on the patio that also looked intriguing, including big kids' platters that came with sizable ice cream sundaes. I wish I could give half stars, because I would have given Maya 3.5. I've had them bookmarked on my account for so long and has heard so many great things. My first time there was on Cinco De Mayo at lunch so naturally, it was very busy. We had a group of 6 and while standing in line one of my coworkers wanted to venture to save a table for us since we were a bigger group. While we couldn't find a table big enough for all of us on that busy day, we stumbled upon their sit down bar/restaurant in back. First of all, they have a different, more limited menu in back and that was sort of a bummer but we were all craving Mexican so we stayed and ordered. They were obviously busy but it took a very long time to get our food, which put a damper on the whole experience. Our lunch hour was almost over by the time our food arrived. The table got a variety of items. I got 2 tacos, al pastor and carne asada, and a spicy chicken tamale. I loved the tamale and my al pastor taco! I wasn't a huge fan of the carne. My coworker also raved about the corn on the cob. I will say the portions were some what small for their price, at least in the sit down area. Pricing and sizes were different in the cafeteria style line. Overall, I want to try them again and use the cafeteria line because that menu had more options. This place took me to back to the time when I enjoyed tasty Mexican food but didn't have to spend much.! Tried a few options, my favorite is their spicy chicken Tamales.! I like their platters where you get an item of each(Max 3), with the side of rice and beans and the whole meal costs around 10 bucks.! They have a salsa bar to feed your curiosity. Surprisingly, there was even a live band performing some popular hits the day I visited this place. Can't ask for more. Will be back soon.! It has been awhile and I tried the walk up counter. I ordered the Maya plate. Glad the restaurant is open, but I just could get behind the food. It was okay again. They really need to get better sporks for their customers. About the thinnest, cheapest plasticware I've ever seen. The tamale was marginal with way too much corn and barely had any flavor or Barbacoa inside , tostada fair and the taco was average. Man this place is D-lish! The walk up experience of selecting my taco down a line of options is not uncommon, but the flavor is great. I also had rice and black beans. I tried a couple tamales - chicken and pork with green sauce, of course I had to add additional toppings like cilantro and onions - totally worth the stop. The price is really fair - I mean with a large drink (horchata!!!!!!!) $12.95. I found another great spot for as close as authentic as I can get, I will be back! I have had the plato vegetariano, the vegetarian tacos, and the vegetarian burrito. I have been there for their weekend brunch and eaten the identified vegan items (the staff is really helpful!). The atmosphere: The inside is vast and decorated like a traditional Mexican eatery! There is a separate bar area and a large main floor area. The service: Good. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. The food: I always enjoy what I get here. This is the closest eatery I have found outside Mexico City that creates authentic Mexican cuisine and does it well. Everything I have had is very consistently well prepared and seasoned well. Superb, authentic Mexican in Northeast Minneapolis. Maya is the only Mexican restaurant in the cities that I have found that actually makes homemade tortillas for their tacos. The food here is fantastic. You can order counter-style (think Chipotle-esque) or they have a sit down area in the back of the restaurant. I'm a huge fan of their al pastor (marinated pork with pineapple) and their salsa bar - tons of different homemade salsas, some are reeeeally spicy! Super fast service and great prices. Tip: If you're going for a late dinner (maybe after 7 pm), sometimes they run out of homemade tortillas. Get there somewhat early if you want really really good homemade tacos. It's street parking only, but I have never had a problem finding a spot. read more

"Maya" means love in my language and love is all I have for this place :). I love their tacos so damn much and their burritos. What I like about this place is that it serves such delicious meats. The taco is always so juicy, fatty and rich and their spice level is on point. I like the northeast location a lot more than the one at Rosedale mall. And it was $60 I went there with my wife, I got the steak entree and she got chicken enchilada, we also got two margaritas. The steak had a good flavor but very chewy. The dish also came with uncle Ben rice which is nasty, flavorless beans and bland steamed vegetables that is covered with oil. The enchilada was bland and cold from all the flavorless sauce on top. I went for dinner to Maya Cuisine last weekend. They have opened a bar and patio and it seemed like a nice place to hangout and there were a couple of people dancing too. We ordered a few cocktails ( I forget the name) they were really good. Whatever we ordered was served quickly and the waiter kept coming back to check on us if everything was alright. I was very happy with the service. There are quite a bit of vegetarian options, so yes this is also a good place if you are vegetarian like me. Special mention about the Tamales, we had the Spinach, mushroom and cheese tamales and it was brilliant !! I have bad food allergies to tomatoes. I let it be known and due to the set up, you can see how they prepare the food. I have never seen such attnetion being paid to allergies. Switching gloves, wiping counters down, switching knives and re-washing it. The handler changed her gloves. They pointed out everything on the salsa bar that had tomato in it to make sure I didn't take something. I really appreciated this. Taking people's allergies seriously like they did gets a 5 star review from me. If you have any food allergies, this is a safe place to go, they know what to do! Oh hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants I went to. First off, this is one of the only salsa bars in MN, so many different types of salsas ranging in heat. I was in salsa heaven. Sat in the restaurant in the back and my girlfriend is a stickler when it comes to cooked meat but she fell in love with the steak there. Maya Cuisine is tucked near a cluster of restaurants in the Nordeast neighborhood along Central Ave, and while it's easy to miss on the street, it's a great place for quick or sit down Mexican food in the Twin Cities, which in this city is a rare find. We went to Maya around 3pm on a Monday. There are two different areas of the restaurants, a bar/sit down restaurant area and a Chipotle-like quick service area. At the time we got there, only the quick service area was open, so we all got different quesadillas, taco bowls, and suggested dishes. They also have select alcoholic beverages at the quick service area, but it seems as if they have a wider selection in the bar area. Regardless, all the food is delicious! So damn good. Similar to El Taco Riendo in that it's fresh, fast, authentic Mexican food. Chipotle style ordering. And ultimately it is straight fire. I had the chicken quesadilla which was unbelievably good. And the best part is they have this dope af salsa bar with like 8-10 different salsas to try. Most are good, some better than others. Love the spiciest one but wouldn't recommend it for everyone, I'm just a big fan of spicy stuff. All in all amazing place and will def be coming back! read more

When I'm in the mood for some fast and authentic Mexican food, Maya hits the spot. You order at a buffet and the cooks will make your meal in front of you (Chipotle-style) and you pay at the end. Following the buffet is a salsa bar with a variety of toppings and salsa like pico de gallo and corn salsa to add to your meal. After that, seat yourself at any of the tables in the large and colorful space. It is decorated like you're sitting in a Mexican courtyard. Kinda cheesy, but fun! The food was all fresh and authentic. Pretty traditional Mexican fare featuring tacos, burritos, tamales made in house every morning, and chile relenos. If you want an alcoholic beverage, head back to the bar in the sit-down restaurant. You can take it back to your table or stay at the bar and enjoy. There is a large variety of margarita flavors on the rocks and they are BIG! And at $7 you can't just say no. Overall, friendly service and great food.
