Maya has become a favorite of mine. My parents moved away in 2020 and whenever I'm craving solid home cooking or missing my mami's caldito or chile relleno, tacos dorados or even just a bean and cheese, I go to Maya. From their delicious chile verde pork to their mole and carne in red sauce, it really is delicious home cooked Mexican goodness. It's a tiny hole in the wall near the port, right on the corner, the inside is homey and small. It's great for breakfast or lunch. If you do go for breakfast try Lola's breakfast dish with over easy egg's, I promise you won't be disappointed. The service is good! There's usually one or two people working the front counter and serving tables which really is all you need for such a small place. We were in the area visiting The Banning House when we found this restaurant through Yelp. When we arrived, the outside and surrounding area looked a little sketchy, but we decided to give it a go. When we walked inside, it was an entirely different vibe. Very welcoming with a very casual and charming decor. The waitress was very nice and friendly. Not much to say other then, if you haven't been to Maya you are the one missing out. I was looking for a good spot to have breakfast and decided to try Mayas. The Restruant is very welcoming and clean and the service is impeccable! There is a great selection of authentic Mexican dishes to choose from, the salsa is some of the best I have had in a long time. Received the order and it was COVERED in cilantro. I'm allergic to cilantro so I had to toss the entire breakfast. Service is absolutely horrible. Order food on Uber eats. The wrong address was selected for delivery which was my fault. So I called Uber and the restaurant letting them know I would be picking it up myself because it wouldn't let me change the address. The lady said she would hold my food for me since They also wouldn't let me cancel my order without full charge. So I drove 30 minutes defeating the whole point of ordering food. When I got there they gave my food to the Uber driver still and wouldn't give us our order. So now I'm driving another 30 minutes to the location where the driver took my food. Came In for brunch with my girlfriend. Plenty of available seats, no wait time and food was quick to come out of the kitchen. Waitress was nice to us the whole time and brought us extra chips and salsa without us asking for them! The burrito ranchero was great! I was in the mood for Mexican and this place had a lot of great 5-star reviews, so I ordered lunch through GrubHub. I got my order in the time I was told, so that was good. But my order was missing a taco. I called and let them know, and they said they'd call GrubHub to refund my money for the missing item. We'll see if I actually ever get that money back... Visited for the first time today on a recommendation and came away very satisfied. I had the green Chilaquiles with Chile Verde on top instead of an egg. They give so a choice of beans or potatoes and I chose beans. The Chile Verde was delicious on top and their beans as well. The restaurant was clean and the staff welcomed us as we entered. I found this place delivery driving for uber eats. I sat down and waited for the order and the nice lady offered me water while I wait. Thank you! I appreciated that. Maya is located in downtown Wilmington in a beautiful old building with a cool mural on the side. I got to practice my Spanish and indulge in some truly delicious comida. Stopped by for a late lunch. Ricardo and Rodolfo Sanchez are cooking up some superb authentic Mexican cuisine. Our sample of their talent was simple enough - wet beef & bean burrito with red sauce and wet Burrito Jalapeno Carnitas with green sauce. Both were plate-licking good. The carnitas had a great crusty outside and tender sweet inside. The horchata was pleasant and well made. No going home hungry from the Maya because the size of the meals and drinks are huge. Apology for no pics, we ate our food too fast. The brothers pride themselves on making food like traditional kitchen favorites that Mexican mothers made, They also branch out and experiment with new special combinations like: Pancho's Breakfast - Huevos Rancheros over carnitas. Served with potatoes or beans. La Morena - Crushed chicken enchilada with mole topped with fresco cheese and cotija cheese, green onions, avocado and two eggs any style. Served with beans and house potatoes. El Chiquito - Burrito of carne asada, chile relleno & avocado. Wet with salsa verde, salsa ranchera and topped with cheese, green onions and two eggs any style. Served with rice and beans. My friends in town rave about the chilaquiles, green chili pork and the menudo (which might be the best ever). I must trust their judgment and try those the next time. They serve a killer breakfast called the Longshoreman (burrito of carne asada, cheese, avocado, French fries and salsa fresca). On a personal note, you can ask for a dish to be prepared that is not on the menu if you have a childhood favorite and they have the ingredients. Mine would be chilaquiles and chicharron in green sauce, topped with two sunny side eggs. Check the boards on the wall for the newest specials. So I've wanted to try Maya for a minute now and I finally decided to make the trek into Wilmington to do so and I'm so glad I did. A small Mexican restaurant on a unassuming corner off Avalon, this place definitely blew my mind with how good and authentic the flavors were coming out of these plates. I'm a HUGE breakfast person so what originally drew me were the pics of the chile verde Chilaquiles which look amazing but after reading reviews it looks like Lola's special was the go to choice for breakfast here so I went with that and my God how amazing this dish is. 2 chicken enchiladas over house potatoes smothered with Avocado and cheese on top. Usually dishes like this are bland or somethings off with so much going on but they hit this out the ball park. Every single bite was so flavorful and filling i just couldn't get over hoe good that breakfast was. Definitely made me a fan. If you're from the southbay and looking for a really good breakfast option this is definitely a place to check out. They also have tons of autentic Mexican dishes for all times of the day and their special tacos are definitely a step up from typical street tacos you find in the area.
