Ok, so after reading the yelp reviews, I was fairly prepared for an average and slightly overpriced experience but - and I HATE to say this - but I was wrong. My friends and I stopped in on a Saturday for the $35 all you can drink and all you can eat tapas lunch. We're a rowdy bunch, and the waitress was amazing at keeping our drinks and bellies full. The food had a rich and authentic taste, and when we decided the Bloody Marys weren't spicy enough, the wait staff brought us extra hot sauce to put in. So here it is: Food 8/10 Drinks 8/10 Service 10/10 Decor 8/10 The thing making this a five-star review, ladies and gentleman, is that we felt like the only customers in the place even though the entire restaurant was packed. I went here for a friend's birthday. It was a group of about 20 people. The restaurant itself was beautiful and had a nice vibe. It was split into a lounge area and then the dine in area. The staff were very friendly and attended to us as we needed them. I had the Tofu Tacos which were much more delicious than I expected. I held back on one star only because we had such a big party and we were squeezed into a very tights corner. It would have been much more comfortable if we had a space that was appropriate. Came here for a birthday brunch, and $35 for all you can eat tapas and drink for two hours was well worth it. Though their regular and mango mimosas were made with really cheap champagne, they went down the gullet easily enough, but the Maya bloody mary is a chipotle-infused recipe that required (yes, required) three delicious refills. The food was fresh, perfectly seasoned and cooked, and the presentation (very important to me) was equally impressive. Order ANYTHING from their brunch menu (my friends and I went through the entire selection) and we raved about every single dish. What really puts this place over the top is the service. As we were part of a rather large group, we waited for the window area to open up, but the party that was sitting there overstayed their brunch time by half an hour leaving my group with only an hour and a half (brunch stops at 4pm) for what's supposed to be a two hour deal. The manager informed us that our time would be extended because of the lengthy wait, and she helped serve my group the entire time. Bottomless Brunch.. DO IT! Walked in with low expectations and was a little confused when no one greeted my friends and I to seat us.. But after taking a few steps we realized there was another entrance and was immediately seated. Place was packed and had a loud sunday funday vibe going on (loved it).... Went here for dinner and was unimpressed by the quality of the food; the guacamole was nothing special (although I was intrigued by the different types of guac on the menu- tuna tartare, bacon, and crab, in addition to traditional). The tacos were good but you have to pay extra for a side or rice and beans. I ordered a side of corn and was especially disappointed with that decision; the corn was bland and served luke warm. This is seriously the best upscale Mexican I have tried to date in NYC. I pass by this place all the time (considering I live 2 blocks away) and have always made a mental note to try. Came here Friday night AND Saturday! Friday, BF and I came for dinner. We shared the cerviche atun which was probably the best tuna cerviche I have EVER had. You could taste every element of the dish: the lime juice, cilantro, mint, salt, sesame seed, fleshy orange bits, fresh cucumber and of course the perfectly cubed freshest of fresh tuna. DELICIOUS! I ordered the enchiladas and BF ordered the chicken mole. I preferred my dish only because I thought the chicken mole sauce tasted a bit on the burnt side and could have been a little more creamier. However, the heaping hot complimentary sides of rice and beans distracted me from this. To finish we had their cafe con chocolate which was an awesomely blended coffee/baileys/and chocolate liqueur concoction. THEN, Saturday night needing a place to kick off drinks with a friend we returned to Maya. This time to their lounge area in the front. We shared guacamole (try it spicy--its so creamy and has the perfect kick!) over margaritas and mojitos. The ambience here is perfect--very dimly lit with great music. This is a preeetty fun place. Came here a few weekends ago for brunch to celebrate my friend's birthday. We were a fairly large party (12 or so people), but the service was pretty attentive, despite the size of our party and just the sheer amount of people dining there at that particular time. If you do go for brunch, you really ought to get their bottomless brunch option, though a la carte is also available (though I think you'd be insane to turn down the option to have unlimited food and drinks!) As for the food and drinks themselves, they were both pretty good. They have a decent amount of options for vegetarians, so I definitely got my fill. Their sweet brunch offerings were excellent and I was quite fond of their migas nortenas as well. So I'm disappointed to say that my experience at Maya was pretty forgettable, which is sad because I kind of had high hopes for this place. To begin the waiter offered us guacamole and chips- so we said "sure, why not" .. however, he failed to mention that the chips and guac were $13. Definitely NOT worth $13 or even $5 :-/ For entrees, I tried their salmon, which managed to be the worst tasting salmon I've ever had. The salmon was dry, and tasteless. It was wrapped in this leaf like thing that I presumed it was baked in. The seasoning was lacking and it tasted like week old fish. As I looked to the table ahead of us I saw a similar reaction from someone who had ordered the same thing. I guess we had both walked into Maya with higher expectations.. I also tried the al pastor tacos and taco of the day which were OK.. the flavors were pretty good, but they were quite small and I'd probably try different bites next time. I went to Maya last night to check out the new renovation that recently took place. The new bar area was closed for a private party on Thursday night so we sat at a table in the dining area. I ordered Traditional Margarita. It was basically a watered down margarita mix with a hint of tequila for $11. I complained to the waiter but the second margarita he brought again tasted like cheap margarita mix with more cheap tequila. I have to say it was the worst margarita I ever had at a restaurant. I had been to Maya a number of times but never remembered their margarita being so bad. It is unacceptable for a high end Mexican restaurant. Fish tacos too were loaded with mayo and many taco trucks on the streets serve better and more sophisticated tacos. Lastly the noise level is so bad that my friend and I had to yell at each other during the entire dinner. We left the restaurant exhausted. I still support other Richard Sandoval chain of restaurants but this one, I will never go back. Dohyo and new Maya, I am afraid I'm seeing a trend toward sacrifice in quality. read more

Rarely am I so taken by a meal that I feel the need to tell each and every person I encounter how great it was for the days and weeks following. The brunch at Maya is one of those meals. From top to bottom, drinks to plates, this brunch is outstanding. Without a reservation you may find it difficult to get a table after about 12pm on the weekends, but luckily Maya offers first come first serve lounge seating in the front of the restaurant with the exact same brunch deal. The all you can eat and drink brunch here is far different from other fratty spots scattered across the city. The food here is actually good, and you'll want to keep eating it. Even better, the drinks match the quality of the food. The dishes are all small plate tapas style items and range from traditional Mexican tacos and empanadas to more exotic (and delicious) chili-powder spiced fruit plate. My personal favorite is the Pan Dulce, a French Toast with Nutella and caramelized goat milk drizzled over the top and served with bananas. I'm confident we ordered at least 5 of them. The wait service is friendly and speedy, bringing dishes as soon they're ready and in enough volume to cover the size of your group. The drinks are served with a generous hand and include 3 flavors of Mimosas, Bloody Marys, and tequila beverages. Virtually nothing on the menu is off limits here and that's the beauty of it. The food you receive is top quality, and the overall experience is just as good. Selfishly I want to keep its excellence a secret, out of fear that it will become too popular to actually get a seat the next time I want to go here. read more

My husband and I love Maya, for the simple fact that their Tuna Tartar Guacamole with yummy chips is delish. We will go there just for the guac. Their mahi mahi is also very good and I order it every time. I've been there for happy hour, and you can't beat it for the drinks. The happy hour food is not the best. The small plates were not very good. So my suggestion would be come for happy hour drinks, but stay for regular dinner or just order the guac. I have not been to their bottomless brunch yet, but since NYC is doing away with those, it looks like I've missed my chance. The restaurant is very loud for some reason, so not for the elder folks that have a hard time hearing. I'd take my in-laws elsewhere. Drinks: Got the frozen strawberry marg and sangria, $7 each I think. These are solid. Food: We were hungry and ordered the 5 for $22. This was a mistake, don't do this. - Bacon-wrapped hot dog: Roommate and I get hot-dog cravings and were so excited for this. We got basically a store bought hot dog, in a dry store bought bun, with a thin slice of bacon on it. Don't get this. I will make this (a better tasting one at that) for you for free. Or you can probably get a better hot dog from the side of the road for like a dollar. - Huarache de Carne: What the heck did we eat? Got some soggy bread with bits of meat on it - Chicken Tamal: All corn, and a teeny bit of chicken. Sauce was pretty good though. - Chips and Salsa: The ratio was tragically off. We were left with a near-full container of salsa afterward. Green salsa tastes great though. - Smoked brisket nachos: Dry meat thrown on top of some nachos that also taste store-bought. I live about a block away and had been looking forward to trying this place for a while...I was highly disappointed and the service recovery was NOT enough to make me want to come back. One star is for the ambiance - it's a dimly lit cute place with open windows and seats facing out onto 1st ave. The other star is for the IDEA of their Taco Tuesday which is what drew my friends and I in one Tuesday night. But the service was terrible...we waited 20 minutes for a pitcher of sangria, which when we finally got it, it was good and strong enough to give us a decent buzz to make us vocal enough about our frustrations during the rest of the evening. We weren't even asked if we wanted to order food until we got our sangria pitcher, so there goes the first 20 minutes. We order a few tacos each, and then wait 45 min to get them - at first mildly patiently (we're already ticked off by the sangria situation) but then we start looking around for our waitress, thinking we had been forgotten about, and a manager. We spotted the manager, but she was clearly too busy flirting with the bartender to bother reading her customers' body language. 40 minutes into the wait, our waitress comes back over and asks how everything is. We look at her quizzically and say things would be good...if we had gotten our food. To this, she looks surprised - "oh! you haven't gotten it yet?!" No...isn't that your job? Then we ask to speak to a manager. She finally comes over, and we tell her we waited 20 minutes for sangria before our order is even taken, then explain how it's been 40 minutes and we haven't seen the few tacos we ordered. She apologizes, saying how the waitress is new (I get this, but what's her excuse for not keeping an eye on her new employees that might need some help or closer monitoring?) Then she goes back into the kitchen and comes back with our tacos 5 minutes later. If they only took 5 minutes to make, what was the wait?! To make matters worse, our order is wrong - half of it is missing. I'm sorry, but if you know you've already screwed up, wouldn't you make extra certain to get things right?! We finally get our complete order, and our $3 tacos are literally three inches in diameter and pretty bland. If we knew this was what we were waiting for, we would have left after finishing off the sangria. Manager comes back over, we express our disappointment, she comps the whole check. But time is money, and we definitely can't get our wasted time back, plus we're still hungry...grrrr. As a manager in the hospitality industry, it takes some serious flaws for me to get vocal about my complaints - I understand that mistakes happen, but I feel like there was a lot of opportunity for management to have made up for these mistakes or catch them in the first place - that to me was the dealbreaker. read more

Came here with co workers hoping to get some good food and drinks after a long day. When we arrived the hostess told us that we could not sit at a table because they were waiting for a party of 200 people!. The restaurant can barely accommodate 100 people in my opinion but nonetheless we sat down and was told by management that we needed to eat within an hour so that they could accommodate those 200 people that were coming. In the end, those 200 people never showed up and the food was really nasty, tasteless and mediocre. The drinks were watered down, probably the worst experience I've ever had. Please save your money and your time from this disorganized restaurant. They could really use better cooks and customer service skills training for the entire restaurant. I've been eye balling maya since I moved to the UES because I have a soft spot for Mexican food. We stopped in on a Friday after work for drinks and appetizers. The place didn't seem too incredibly busy. The bar area was crowded but most of the tables were open and there seemed to be plenty of servers buzzing around. I think the happy hour menu itself its great! There is a whole slew of appetizers that sound delicious. We went with classic guacamole which was really good. The margaritas are rather stiff and only $6, and the sangria was some of the best I've ever tasted. I like the open air vibe of the restaurant and spacious lounge area as well. However our server was terrible!!! We were never greeted. We finally went to the hostess to ask for our server, and still didn't get any service. At one point our server walked in the direction of our table, got half way there, and turned around and walked away!!! When we were finally greeted by a very rude and careless server it was more of just a "what do you want" greeting. Our order came out quickly, but out server never returned to make sure everything came out okay or if we needed another drink or anything. HELLO don't you want us to spend money?? Anyway at no surprise to us it took multiple more inquiries to different people to finally get a check. I may bring myself to return another time and try sitting down at a table. I went here on Saturday for brunch with my husband and close friend of mine.She had already visited the spot before and thought i would like it. we gave it a try and do not regret it. We had made reservations for 12pm but due to traffic we got there around 12:15 we were still seated and didnt have to wait. at this time there were probably like 4 tables with people and i to be honest i thought it would be more crowded at that time. our waiter was Guillermo and he was great from the beginning to the end. He explained the menu to us and gave us his suggestions on what are his favorites. since we had no idea what to order he made some suggestions and made sure the food kept rolling in. Drinks were great as well and although 30 min after we got there in a blink of an eye the place was packed the hosts and other waiters made sure our cup was not empty. The ambiance was great and place was upscale if you are feeling a bit boujee. I loved the service and when it was time for the check to come it didnt take too long. Only down side are the bathrooms but other than that it was a great place with great food. Even though it was all you can eat food and drinks, plates were nicely presented with attention to detail and drinks were not watered down. food is very much authentic to the real deal. I will definitely will be coming back with other group of my friends. everyone at the table must participate in the brunch in order to get the deal. This place was such a pleasant surprise, right in my neighborhood. We were in the mood for mexican and almost went to Rosa Mexicano, but since the wait was an hour and fifteen minutes - on a tuesday! - we opted for Maya. Turned out to be a great choice!! The guacamole was delicious, and you get to choose the level of spice (we chose medium). It had just the right amount of kick and a perfect velvety texture. The chips were good, but a little on the thick/hard side for my taste - would have been better if warm. The appetizer was a steak taco with onions and guacamole - tacos de punta de filete - the steak was nicely cooked, but a little dry without adding the guac. the dish was nothing exceptional but had a nice flavor and attractive presentation. The entree was amazing!! We decided to split a chicken dish - pechuga adobada - which was chicken with a pico de gallo salsa with corn, cilantro pesto, and topped with a yummy dumpling. The chicken was a perfect amount to split (or get by yourself if you don't get an appetizer). The salsa really made the dish, and although I don't usually choose corn, it gave it a hint of sweetness that really complimented the rest of the dish. I'd definitely order this again, which is a clear sign that the restaurant gets 4 stars in my book. Although we probably didn't need dessert, i couldn't pass up the unique and creative dessert menu. I chose the crepes, with a heavenly caramel sauce, bananas, and sugared walnuts. It was supposed to come with cinnamon ice cream, which I was totally excited about, but they were out, so it came with vanilla. It was still delicious, but I'll definitely have to go back and try that cinnamon. I never finish desserts. I hardly ever order desserts. I'm telling you right now, this was unbelievable. The ambiance is ok, it's sort of tribal but with the white table cloths it looks a little fancier. If I could change something, it would be the table cloth color, just to give it a more ethnic decor. All in all, a great experience, and if you like higher-end modern mexican, you'll be in for a more-than-satisfying treat at Maya. read more

I was bummed that the Jeffrey was too crowded (seriously, when am I ever going to be able to try that place?) but it allowed me the opportunity to try Maya for the first time! Great happy hour and reverse happy hour (from 9pm to midnight) with $6 margaritas, which are strong and delicious. My boyfriend had passion fruit and I got strawberry but they have a bunch of other types too. Came in on a Thursday night - they had plenty of tables for both dinner and at the bar and had a soccer game playing. The space was well-decorated and really open. The food was honestly some of the best Mexican I've had in the city! We ordered off of the bar/tapas style menu and I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised! The squash blossom quesadillas are a MUST. They're perfectly fried with the most flavorful filling. We ended up getting 2 orders! I also tried the al pastor tacos, which were on the smaller side but really delicious. The nachos were just ok. The best part was our bill only came to $50, and we got a LOT of food. I wish I didn't miss happy hour by 10 minutes but I'll try to walk faster next time. Intrigued by the unlimited brunch but it's on the pricier side. In terms of AYCE/AYCD options, this is one of the better ones I've had in the city. I was impressed with how free flowing the drinks were, from beginning to end. I also liked that they started the process by bringing out one of everything so you can get an idea of what you like and make your decisions that way. You get 2 hours to have whatever you want and, unlike a lot of AYCE places I've come across, you aren't rushed out the door and the waiter doesn't go MIA for long stretches of time. read more

I ordered the Passion Margarita first (a little too sweet for me) followed by the Maya Margarita. Both drinks hit the spot. Perfect ambiance for a date - dim lighting, candles, wooden decor, etc. One of my peers met me at the bar for a quick drink and it was just what we needed to make it through our 7-9:30pm class. My only complaint is that they use half a lime for every Margarita drink. I would have been content with a small wedge. I haven't tried the food at Maya yet, but it looked and smelled very good. This is in reference to their weekend Bottomless Boozy Brunch for $35. Here's the rundown: drink options: margaritas, bloody marys, spiked aqua fresca, mimosa food options: 25+ The food is delicious. The drinks were good. You're full well before the 2 hr limit is up (though I'm not a fan that there was a stipulation in the first place). The not so awesome: 15 minutes for service, 5 minutes for water...after that, it was smooth sailing. I would appreciated if the server came by more often rather than me getting his attention. Many times when my fellow coworkers and I are finishing work at a near-by hospital, we start weighing our options for drinks and food in the area. We spent many evenings at Maya because it is several blocks away from our work. We were all there this past Friday at 6:30. This time I can only muster up 2 stars because of the disappointing experience, that took us by surprise. The new renovations are absolutely beautiful, as well as more chic, which gives this UES restaurant a "downtown" ambiance. We were all happy to have more available space, which was a downfall before they took over the nail salon next door. They need to work on the music- no one could hear it... Taking away 3 stars begins here: we were all disappointed with the hour they took away from happy hour. Many times we chose Maya in the past is because their happy hour lasted longer than others in the area. Now, we will probably be heading to the other mexican destination 10 blocks away on 1st ave, which lasts 30 min longer. They also increased the price of the tapas on the bar menu, as well as "fluffed-up" the descriptions, although the food items were exactly the same. The carne harache was actually very dry. I strongly suggest they bring salsa on the side to help moisten the dish. The guacamole was delish, as always, BUT they switched from tasty homemade chips to store-bought chips. The place sure did empty out shortly after people enjoyed their last drinks during the 5-7 happy hour. I saw 2 other groups from our hospital that were equally disappointed that the extra hour that was taken away from the drink specials. Most shifts at the hospital are done at 7-730 so it was much easier to catch the bar specials before 8pm. Maya does make tasty margaritas and my favorite was the Maya with tamarind sprinkled on the rim, but now for the summer I must admit the watermelon margarita is quite refreshing! read more

7 of us went there last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. Place has nice ambience and the space was nice. When we first arrived, there was only 4 of us there and the staff was very attentive, asking us if we wanted any drinks and bringing the pitcher of sangria pretty quickly. Then the rest of the party arrived and we ordered. However... I decided to go with the restaurant week menu. As an appetizer, I ordered the salmon ceviche. Not too bad, had better, thought it was a little too much citrus but it was tasty enough. Then we sat there for 45 minutes waiting for our entrees. 45 minutes!!! And the restaurant wasn't even that crowded. Not once did the waiter come by to see if we were ok or needed anything. Just as I was about to get up and physically haul the waiter over, our food arrived. I ordered the soft shell crab and was VERY disappointed to see one small crab on a bed of shredded lettuce. ONE?! What the hell establishment was this? I was glad I had a big lunch so I wasn't that hungry. Whatever they marinated the crab in was very good so points at least for taste but presentation was a big fat ZERO. For dessert I had the Chocoflan. I just like saying that: Chocoflan. It was ok. VERY SLOW service. BELOW AVERAGE food. NOT WORTH THE MONEY AT ALL!!! Came here for the unlimited food + drinks brunch for $45/person and was extremely disappointed. The wait was ridiculous. We ordered 5-10 tapas to share among a table of 8 and only 2 tapas showed up after FOURTY FIVE minutes of wait (and it wasn't even the tapas we ordered!!). I had to ask the server a few times why it was taking so long and nobody seemed to care or know why...I looked around other tables and most of them had little to no food on the tables as well so it wasn't just ours. Service was terrible terrible terrible. Our water glass were empty, drinks took 30 minutes to get refilled, and when I asked my waitress for the 5th time why the food was taking so long and got no better explaination other than "our kitchen is busy", I had to ask a different waiter about the wait who then brought out food to our table. But nothing he brought out were anything we actually ordered!!! After close to 1.2 hours of wait we didn't care and ate it anyways because we were told the kitchen was about to close soon (so much for "umlimited"...). Food was disgusting. I'm really not a Mexican food snob at all, Chipotle can make me a pretty happy person. But the food at this location is just tasteless, not seasoned well, ingredients didn't taste very fresh, and everything we tried were a huge disappointment. (I don't understand how anyone could recommend the ceviche here, it's so fishy I was worried about getting sick afterwards....!!) Everything else just tasted like forzen-food heated up in a microwave (wet, sloppy, gross...borderline insulting to my taste buds...) which makes me wonder, how could the kitchen be THAT busy if they are just re-heating frozen food back there?!?! I would highly recommend everyone to NOT go to this place unless if you want to spend $45 on 1-2 bad tasting drinks and a few frozen-food quality mexican dishes that you never ordered in the first place. (not to mention the terrible experience of having to beg for your server's attention......) I had my birthday brunch here two weeks ago & I had a fantastic time. From the moment I walked in & waited for my party to arrive I was greeted with Mimosas and then a few mins later complimentary frozen shots. I had a party of 12 & everyone loved the drinks and the food. Unlimited drinks (flavored mimosas, bloody marys, margaritas) & shared plates (2 hrs) for $43 is worth it. I had some friends who are picky & weren't sure if they would like Mexican for brunch however afterwards they were raving about the food & had a great time. I am definitely coming back for brunch. Everything was delicious and the attention from staff was superb. It's all you can eat and drink for 2 hours and the plates are served family style so your party can try a bit of everything that they offer on the brunch menu. Nice, low-key happy hour crowd. We came here in the rain on a weekday evening and expected to have enough room to start using furniture to build forts but surprisingly there was still a decent turnout. It's not the craziest place to go after work but it's a nice happy hour spot to spend time with a small group or friends or a date. The bar is a nice place to sit and doesn't make you feel like you are sitting in the errant folding chair at a family gathering. Would recommend the frozen margaritas. read more

Came here with friends for dinner and really wanted to like it, but came away with mixed reviews. The food itself was pretty good. We all ordered various taco dishes which all were tasty. They could have been spicier but it is expected. The guac we ordered to start was also freshly made and quite tasty. Unfortunately, the service was inattentive and slow which brought this down from 4 stars to 3. it took forever to get anything from water to menus, and unfortunately it just detracted from the meal. I came here for the first time, and wow! great and attentive service, from the hostess to the servers. Literally the best brunch place in the city!!!!! If you're going to pay a Shit ton of money on brunch like 40-50 bucks as the typical brunch prices in NYC, you might as well get the most food options and drinks. It's tapas style so we can literally order 20 different things in the menu every time until you're so stuffed you puke. And then we can get any delicious drink like guava or blood orange mimosa to sangria. The options are incredible compared to your standard orange juice mimosa that places offer only. And they go ham refilling you all the time so you can be sure to get drunk if that's your plan. This is the best bang for your buck hands down. I order at LEAST 10 different dishes everytime and get to drink and try 4 different mimosas. Plus the banging reggaeton and hiphop playlist put you in the brunchin mood. I had my birthday brunch at Maya today, and it went flawlessly. I was concerned going into the brunch, as it was a group of 17 and I find that with large parties at a restaurant there is usually some sort of issue that comes up. Nothing of the sort here! Because Maya is all you can drink AND eat, they let us know that with larger groups they basically just bring food out course after course. We agreed, and it was perfect. If we were missing something we wanted from the menu, we could specifically ask for it, but overall more and more food kept coming and it was extremely easy for everyone to share and grab what they wanted. They were also extremely attentive in re-filling the drink glasses (those Maya mimosas are amazing!). Finally, they have no limit on how many credit cards can be used to split the bill, which made paying so much easier. Overall, Maya is a fun place with a great atmosphere and good food, and it catered very well to a large group. Would absolutely recommend for similar occasions. read more
