If you're looking for a bottomless brunch, then this place is a great place especially for the boozy aspect of the brunch. The margaritas on the rocks were delicious as they were made to order and was not watered down like most bottomless brunches. The food items were okay. Was hoping that the queso fundido had more flavor and not require to be eaten fast bc it's not as stringy as it cools down quickly. The mains were also mediocre. Nothing to write home about. What a lovely little Mexican spot right on the corner of 34th ave. Not a huge dining area but enough to enjoy a date night with someone. This places gives off such cute vibes and the food stands up to what this spot portrays. The drinks were pretty good here with Mezcal being their focus. Mezcal can get a bit too smokey for me, but the Maria Bonita was nice and refreshing even with Mezcal. For food, we went ham on the tacos (no actual ham was involved though) because we couldn't decide which to choose. We ordered the chorizo and pulpo, carne asada and the shrimp tacos. The shrimp were my absolute favorite, filled with flavor and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. And I am going to end the review with how we started our meal, because to me the Elote was the nightlight of the night. I will never go through life being trivial and entitled, but being denied a move to a more desirable table when the place is half empty is quite insulting. Especially since we value great service and like to tip well. Twice the male host arrogantly told both us and the waitress that we had to stay put, and as the night went on, not a single person was put at the table we had wanted. Until we were about to leave. Mayahuel is definitely a 10/10. When you first arrive you're greeted by the host, as you past the bar the bartender also greets you and that is very rare. The customer service was outstanding. My server Emy was amazing, she was very helpful, super sweet and did not make me feel rushed or anything. The taco Tuesday special is a HIT. 3x of the same tacos with a complimentary margarita for $18, now that is a great deal! The food was delicious, refreshing and very filling. I had an awesome late breakfast at Mayahuel a couple Saturdays ago. After studying the menu, my two friends and I all ordered the huevos rancheros. There were other tempting options, but we were in agreement about what sounded best. The three plates of food, plus a side of crispy bacon, were brought out to the table a few minutes later. I was impressed with the preparation of the huevos rancheros. The eggs and tortilla were good, standard stuff, but the sauce was phenomenal, a mouthwateringly flavorful concoction with enough acid to cut through the more savory components of the dish. The fried chorizo nibblets lended a pleasant texture and mouthfeel, and tasted good, too. I even added bacon to a few bites and went, briefly, to heaven. We all enjoyed the food and cleaned our respective plates, though one of my friends said he found the sauce a little too salty. Nothing a refill of water, provided by the gracious server, couldn't fix. The AC felt great and I liked the decor and vibe at our booth in the back. It will be hard to explore more of the menu now that I'm so transfixed by the huevos, but I hope to give it a shot. read more

Just came for brunch here. When I come back during dinner time, I will update my review! The food at brunch was great and flavorful. My friend had the huevos rancheros (which had a mushroom base on the bottom that was interesting!) I had the fish tacos, which had 3 crispy pieces of fish on each of the small tortillas, along with cabbage and a spiced mayo. I really enjoyed the fish tacos. Their brunch offers a $30 bottomless special with delicious margaritas, as well as mimosas and other drinks, as options to switch in between during the time of the special. We also had the flan, which was a highlight!! The flan and the margaritas were my favorite part of the visit. The decor and vibe feels fresh and trendy. The staff was very attentive and polite. I love everything about Mayahuel. From the name to the décor and most importantly the food. It's a bit of a well kept secret in the Astoria food scene but I expect that to change rather quickly. We tried a little bit of everything but the star of the night to me was the Tampiquena (skirt steak, cactus, enchilada, guacamole and rajas poblanas). If I can give this place an A++, a 6 out of 5 stars, or a 110%, I will gladly do it in a heartbeat. Honestly, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the city, and probably a gem that hasn't been hyped up (rather keep it that way). What makes Mayahuel great? Atmosphere - fun, casual, festive, and a super open and friendly staff + owner. Explain the menu really well. What we got were the al pastor tacos, crispy fish tacos, guacamole, and the chicken mole. You can't go wrong with either of these dishes, but what really (and i emphasize REALLY) blew my mind were the pescado fish tacos. Holy smokes - crispy on the outside, juicy, moist, and well seasoned/balanced in the inside. The salsa that comes with it adds a little hint of acidity + a little guacamole/avocado really knocks it out of the park. Came her for dinner. The service was very good! We ordered the Esquite (corn) and Aguachile Tatemado (raw fluke) for appetizers. The corn was very good. The cortija cheese and spicy mayo and avocado sauce were a nice combination (Rating 5/5). Aguachile tatemado was, unfortunately, our least favorite dish of the night. It tasted too citrusy and contained too much black pepper (Rating 0/5). For entrees, we ordered the Tampiqueña (skirt steak) and the Pescado Zarandeado (red snapper). The skirt steak was a perfect medium rare and was served with blue tortillas. It was a decent portion size and was very filling (Rating 4/5). For the red snapper, it had decent flavor with the sauces provided on the side. The tangy sauce was our favorite. The "cucumber salad" only contained cucumbers, dill, and cilantro. It does contain bones, so be careful (Rating 3.5/5)! Tres leches was their only dessert option, and it did not disappoint (Rating 5/5). Overall: We would come back here as a solid date night option. Maybe next time try the tostada for the appetizer instead and octopus next time as well. read more

Mayahuel is such a gem. The playlist alone won me over--songs from Luis Miguel and Maná to Julieta Venegas had me singing along all night. Instead of the usual banda or reggaeton you hear at most Mexican spots, this music took me straight back to Mexico City. Between the incredible margaritas, the beautiful decor, and the flavors and colors everywhere, it genuinely felt like being in CDMX again. The guacamole was some of the freshest I've had, with an amazing chili sauce in the middle that took it to another level. And on top of it all, the owners are so sweet and welcoming. We came here on Tuesday for Taco Tuesday and although we didn't make happy hour specials at the bar, we both got an order of tacos and it came with a free margarita. What a treat! Our waiter Mo was so nice and gave us a run down on all his recommendations. I got the carne asada tacos with a frozen passion fruit margarita and my friend got the chorizo and pulpo tacos with a blood orange margarita. We both agreed my carne asada tacos were better as we don't believe the chorizo goes well with pulpo. And because our first round of margaritas were free, we decided to get another round. I got the frozen strawberry margarita and my friend got the prickly Pear one. The place was semi packed when we got there and by the time our tacos came it was a mad house! One of my favorite restaurant in Astoria. Great service and amazing Mexican food. I always order their flank steak, which has a great smokiness to it. I went to Mayahuel for the mole. I went in with low expectations because NY doesn't have the best Mexican food but I was pleasantly surprised. The mole was perfectly balanced, not too sweet and not too spicy. It was filling and the ambiance is great. Came here after wanting to stop by for a little over a year. Greeted by the smiling and amicable host who was going to sit us in The back but we decided to sit at the tall tables by the bar. We like people watching. We started off with a beer I hadn't even heard of, Monopolio. Finally), red sals and a huevo estrellado on top. I know some ppl frown upon this word. It YUM!! I had the fish tacos, backstory all Mexican food I have here in NY I compare to the Mexican food I used to have in Ca., this one reminded me of my favorite fish taco place heading towards the Brea Mall. In other words... YUM. I got three tacos on a purple tortilla with cilantro, chipotle mayo and beer battered fish. So tasty. Perfectly seasoned. In between the guacamole and devouring our entree we ordered the house tequila. I wish I remembered what it was because I was so in awe of my food that when he brought it over I shot it and chased it with the beer and continued to eat. You would think I had enough but no. So I ordered the dessert, flan and coffee. I'm so picky with my flan. When our server brought me the coffee he said they only do cafe de olla. I have never been a cafe de olla person.. but I am now!! And will probably only have it here. The flan.... Soft, buttery, vanilla-y, cinnamon-y, milky with a scoop of what I assuming was homemade whipped cream. I went to this restaurant with a bunch of others a few months ago. The service was pretty friendly and the space is nice. It wasn't particularly loud or crowded outside of the bar but we were there on a weekday. To drink I had a Passion Fruit Mezcalita which is $12 or $2 more than a plain one. A Mezcalita is essentially a Margarita made with mezcal and I prefer it heavily as I like the smokier flavor of the latter alcohol and I generally don't like tequila unless it's aged. The drink had a choice of salt or spice (tajín) rim and I went with the latter and it was delicious with a good hit of the mezcal and not super sweet/sour. The drink is usually $14 (or presumably $16 with the added flavor.) Bartender was friendly (and friendlier when I ordered it as mezcalita de maracuyá.) They gave us salsa and chips which were fine though the salsa could have been a bit spicier. We asked for a different hotter sauce and the new one they delivered was a lot more flavorful and I would recommend them bring that one out as well. We started with two smaller dishes. The Aguachile ($16) has shrimp, lime, jalapeño, red onion, radish, pineapple, and cilantro. Another review complained that the shrimp was raw which is humorous as well the shrimp is expected to be raw barely cooked by the juices. It was pretty tasty though I would say it could definitely have been spicier which made the flavors a bit too subtle. The Ensalada De Nopal (same price) with grilled cactus, onions, cherry tomatoes, radishes, cilantro, and queso fresco was also pretty good. The cactus was cut thin and had a pleasant texture. There was plenty of queso fresco otherwise. It could have been a bit bigger but still pretty solid. Best of the main dishes and by far the best of the night is the main photo on the website; the Chile En Nogada ($28) with a roasted poblano pepper, ground pork, pearl, apple, walnut creamy sauce, pomegranate seeds, and a side of rice. Nogada refers to the walnuts would provide a distinct nuttiness to this dish compared to many other Mexican dishes. It's one of my personal favorites and this place makes an excellent one. The pepper was well roasted, the pork was very flavorful, and the sauce wasn't nearly as sweet as other spots being also thick but not too thick. I would highly recommend it even if the side of rice was a bit hard/undercooked. The remaining main dishes weren't as good. The Mole Poblano ($30) with half chicken, housemade mole sauce, and a side of rice. While the mole sauce was pretty complex with a good mix of sweet, bitterness, and spice (a bit thinner than I would like,) the issue was the chicken. It tasted distinctly like the chicken wasn't cooked in the sauce but added later so it was pretty bland and just not that well cooked otherwise. As I found the mole pretty good, I would likely get the enmoladas/enchiladas de mole next time. The Tampiqueña (36) with skirt steak, cactus, enchilada of choice, guacamole, rajas poblanas, and a side of fresh tortillas was also solid. Steak was cooked well though it was chewy. The sides whether it was the roasted poblano or guacamole was decent. The dish was pricey but still good though easily the second best of the dishes. The food here was decent. A couple definite standouts and if I was in the neighborhood, I would definitely go back at least for their happy hour to get some of their tacos and other things or perhaps just go back for their excellent chile nogada. The crispy pascado tacos used to come out freshly fired, juicy, flavorful, pickled cabbage on top plus spicy mayo and topped with cilantro. Today the fish had no flavor. The fish was not juicy. It was tough. The pickled cabbage was not even salty or sour. And wtf happened to the cilantro? They put little flowers on top. Everything looked good but tasted like cardboard paper. I had to ask for hot sauce to finish the food. The carne asada - omg - no. Please it looked sad and tasted even more sad. The meat was cold. Tiny tiny bits cut. No flavor. You put chopped grilled onions on top and No cilantro. They dripped hot oil over the meat. Emmm ... what happened? Is your chef okay? This is not Mexican food. What is this? The aquachilli and fish ... I liked the avocado that's the only thing I could taste but the sauce was weird. Sour. One dimension. No herbs. Flat. Can someone tell me what happened? Went to dinner late last night (9:30pm, they close at 11pm) and partially maybe that's why the food wasn't as good? Was intrigued by this place since "Give Me Astoria" article rated it to be "top 31 restaurants in Astoria". Ambiance was great, the host in the front was the friendliest we've ever experienced and we thought the waiter we had was super nice, but he wasn't very attentive during our meal. Our appetizer was still on the table and I felt bad cause the server who brought out our entrees had a difficult time maneuvering the dishes in our small table. Food was mediocre. My husband had the enchiladas and it wasn't anything phenomenal. I had the skirt steak with guacamole, enchilada (menu said I had a choice but was never offered any choices) and some veggie side. I asked for "medium" on my steak and received medium rare. Once I saw blood oozing, I stopped eating the chewy meat. I liked skirt steaks because they're super tender and soft and melts like butter... everything this meat wasn't. Again, maybe it was the time of our dinner because the food was not great. Such a great new, locally-owned place in Astoria! We came here for my sister-in-law's graduation dinner, and it was a great experience overall. The decor and atmosphere were really well-done, and our server was nice, funny, and honest. I'm typically a little wary of steak tacos because they tend to be fatty and chewy, but I was hopeful and got the carne asada tacos and they were amazing! Super tender, great flavor, and corn tortillas are always the way to go. I got the date cake for dessert. It's not what I would normally choose, but a couple family members recommended it and it was definitely good and unexpected. My only recommendation would be that they should offer coffee all day. Most of my table wanted coffee with dessert, but the server said they only offer it early in the day. He said a lot of people have been asking for coffee with dessert, so hopefully it's something they'll add soon. read more

The steak we ordered with our brunch entrees was so delicious, cooked perfectly medium rare. The flan is one of the best I've ever had, it practically melts in your mouth. I also really like the layout of the restaurant and the design - cozy, creative, and thoughtful. Many of the entrees have sour cream and milk products.
