My wife and I had lunch at Mayfield yesterday. The restaurant has a tiny and dingy footprint on Franklin Avenue... it does not have any large signage or any awning to announce its presence. The interior, however, is large and warm and welcoming. The bar is very prominent, perhaps even disproportionate to the seating spaces. The atmosphere reminded me of the set of the tv series Cheers, i.e. the bar "where everybody knows your name." That, of course, is a very good thing. We ate with friends we had not seen in some years, and so paid less attention to the food than it probably deserved. But we took much of it home afterwards, and found it satisfactory today. The waiter was physically imposing... given a leather jacket and a motorcycle he could have been a very convincing Hells Angel. But he was polite, helpful and friendly... so much for appearances. If we lived within several blocks of Mayfair, it would be my regular go-to. I really liked it. read more

Recently stopped in for a quick bit after a concert to escape the cold. Atmosphere was cozy but, a bit cold by the windows. If you visit in the winter, ask for a table not by the windows! I noshed on the oyster Rockefeller. Savory and deelish. My only complaint, oysters could've been bigger for the price paid. You got 4 btw. I also sipped on a nice dirty martini. No complaints there. I came here for dinner around 8:30/9. The middle of the restaurant was already "shut down" for the night. So the only seating options were in the doorway or outside on the patio. Already off to a bad start. The restaurant is dark and loud. I came alone, so I was fine, but if having a conversation over dinner is a priority, then you may want to skip this place. It's also very dark. The raw oysters were fresh and prepared perfectly. The charbroiled oysters were good, but not great. The french fries were crunchy and fresh. The side salad was so disappointing. It was spring mix, onions, and salad dressing. That's it. No carrots, tomatoes, olives, or any vegetable with some color. It's almost as if they just tossed it together last minute. I had two waiters within the course of the night. Everything felt all over the place. I went on a Saturday night, and it felt like they were rushing me out even though they don't close until 10:30 pm. Overall, I was disappointed, and I probably won't be back. read more

Stopped by Mayflower for brunch with a friend on a Sunday afternoon. It was just ~okay~. Service was very friendly. We each got an omelette and they were fine. Again, nothing to write home about. We're both gluten-intolerant and the options are pretty limited. No gluten-free toast or anything like that. We didn't get drinks so can't speak to those! We also found the space to be *super* loud. Maybe it's just because of the building itself - it seemed like everyone's voices were super amplified. It made it hard to hear each other. It's not like you should avoid this spot or anything. The mushroom ravioli has a delicious mushroom flavor and the mushrooms are perfectly cooked (but the dish was a little too salty). A great restaurant with good food (burger is excellent and the fried oyster po-boy is even better) friendly staff and a nice environment. I love coming here with my family at least once or twice every few months. Dollar oysters have sadly become $4.00 oysters but this is basically city-wide and has been the case for a few years now. Can't blame them but it's still sad. Two easy fixes would make this place five stars: - ditch the QR codes and bring back traditional menus - ditch the air-dry mechanism in the bathroom and bring in paper hand towels Yes I understand that QR codes allow the business to much more easily change menu items and pricing. Yes I understand that proper menus need to be cleaned and periodically replaced. Yes i understand that some might even stretch and say 'it's green!'. But looking at your phone should not be a prerequisite to eat at a restaurant. Do they have any real menus? No. we were told they would allow us to order from their in-house ipad if we did not have a phone. Like I said, I understand why restaurants want to do this. It's easier and cheaper! But people rightly HATE the QR code menus. It makes for a cold and uninviting environment and attention to this sort of thing should be top priority, not managerial convenience and cost savings. Most restaurants figured this out not long after covid ended and went back to real menus but not here? Same with the air blaster in the restroom. Yes it's cheaper and more convenient for restaurant operations. They save on the regular purchasing and storage and stocking of paper products. And it's green! But people hate standing in front of that device rubbing their hands together like a doofus for what feels like forever only to have their hands still not really dry. If you value customer experience over your own convenience as a business you'll provide patrons with a civilized way to dry their hands. If I want to blow my eardrums out and spray germs all over the place I'll go to an airport bathroom, not a nice restaurant. I still love it here though and if i'm being harsh it's because I want this place to continue on and succeed. It's just a shame to see these two unforced errors. Came for brunch this past sunday and want to start by saying the bartender was amazing and knew what I wanted before I even did. I got a paloma (amazing! not too sweet, super balanced) and the shrimp and grits. Lawd, the shrimp and grits were creamy and buttery and absolutely delicious! The greens served on the side were tangy and cut the richness of the grits well. Also, the hot sauce they have here is incredible and really added to the dish, so make sure you ask for it! The server left me at a table for 7 minutes without a menu, I had to flag down the staff. The menu is uninspired, my Benedict was wet and the hollendiase too thick. Ordered a Bloody Mary and they put a bread and butter pickle in it? Not the correct flavor profile for a spicy salty drink. Solid Crown Heights spot. Can usually get a table if you show up early, but they also take reservations. Great place to sit at the bar if dining solo. Consistently good food for the last ~10 years. The service here is also top notch. Lots of staff turnover like most restaurants but the new servers they hire are always super knowledgeable and friendly and welcoming. The bartenders always make great cocktails. No pretension despite the trendy neighborhood and vibes. Small things: The chairs at the tables aren't very comfortable - weird bench seating that they've had forever and I wish they would update. It's awkward to sit at the 6 top with 4 people when two of the chairs are fused together. Hard to explain this but if you go and sit at a low 6 top you'll know what I mean. If you're wearing shorts or a skirt the slatted style seating digs into your skin. The menu has been mostly the same for a long time and I like consistency, so no complaints there, but some of the dishes seem a little tired - I swear the kale salad used to be better. Overall this is still in my top 3 crown heights restaurants and if you're in the neighborhood, visiting prospect park or the BK museum, it's a great lunch or dinner option. The cake was good but four tiny pieces which do not even equate to one whole slice of cake is $11 and the ravioli was about 8 pieces and is $25. The cheese on the ravioli tasted cheap and flavorless. Happy Hour: This is my favorite because you can't beat $1.50 for fresh oysters and beer. Service: The servers are attentive, and the bartenders are friendly. Came to Mayfield at the tail end of happy hour and got a glass of wine and tried the fried eggplant sandwich. All in all it was super tasty and the service was friendly and accommodating. The inside feels like a nicer restaurant that I'd say feels in between more casual and upscale. It's located right off of Franklin and is a great option for happy hour! So I previously been for Brunch and had been really wanting to try their dinner and BOY WAS I PLEASED. Mask is required when walking through the restaurant and vaccine and ids are checked when entering. I also appreciate the many hand sanitizer stations they had throughout the restaurant. Our server Issy was a delight and very attentive. I started with a Dirty Martini which was served with kalamata olives and juice...something new for me and also very tasty. HOWEVER, I must admit that the other drinks my friends had didn't impressed me (lacked flavor and love). So the drinks here are just mehhhh. Now to the food. Fresh oysters- pretty good for the $2 oyster special they have everyday. Cornmeal fried oysters- the oyster itself wasn't that tasty. They were a little bland and chewy. But it's served over this smoked salmon and picked noodles which were to die for. Wings- nice, meaty and drenched in sauce just how I like it. Fish and chips- batter was nice and crispy. Fish was flaky and melted right in my mouth. I also appreciate a good fry and they were perfectly seasoned. Mushroom ravioli-it's a winner. Bursting with so much umami flavors. Smoked spare ribs- some of the best spare ribs I've had in a really long time. MUST HAVE Olive oil cake- they really should take this off the menu. Dessert is suppose to be special and this seems like a "thrown together" dessert. This is a 3.5 rounded up because I have had better experiences in the past than I did when i went most recently. The food was delicious (as always...fried chicken sandwich and eggplant sandwich were both remarkable), but our meals took an hour to come out, and our waitress didn't check in with us or apologize when the food came out late. Also, a friend asked for a mocktail aka any of the drinks without alcohol and the waitress said this wasn't possible. I do not want to get into how inappropriate it was to have an establishment not make a drink without alcohol in it (when my friend was willing to pay the full price and the drinks weren't pre-mixed) but I hope that this doesn't happen again in the future. COVID-wise, they're doing a great job with outdoor dining and I'm always excited for restaurants in Brooklyn that take reservations. read more

We went to Mayfield for brunch after a trip to the botanical gardens and it is officially one of my top brunch spots. Highlights are the food quality and quantity. The portions are massive and extremely delicious. The Cuban sandwich is huge and so flavorful. Even the bread was great. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. It also came with a generous amount of fries that were crispy and well seasoned. I ate way more than I should have because everything was so tasty. We also had the Eggs Atlantic, which is basically eggs benedict with salmon. The portion was also very generous. The salmon was delicious, and the included home fries were great. I don't get down to Brooklyn too often, but I will definitely visit Mayfield again when I do. And you should too for one of the best brunches around. read more

Great food and service. They've got a nice outdoor patio for dining during covid although be aware there's no heating so after a couple of hours you might get cold - dress warmly! I've been here a few times - to start, I wish I could remember what I got here for breakfast once because it was excellent. I'd say of my three times here the breakfast I got was the biggest standout. Next, the sweet and spicy brussels sprouts are delicious and one of a kind. As far as my full meal, I got the Cuban sandwich - it was good but not a knock out of the park for me like the breakfast/brussels sprouts and I'd probably try something else next time. It's absolutely massive though and I have plenty of leftovers (which again, it was good, I've just had better Cubans). I like Mayfield a lot. I usually come for happy hour which is from 5-6:30. They have oysters for $1.50 each and you'll need to ask them what the beer and wine specials are. This time around I got the Cuban sandwich with fries. The fries are perfect, with the right amount of crunch and oiliness you'd expect from fries. The Cuban is different from those I've had - a lot more meat and they added pepperoncinis. The ambiance is great for a date, especially if you get to sit next to the window facing the street. What a gem! Mayfield is the perfect date spot--dark and cozy, slightly upscale but still comfy, easy to get a table, tasty and affordable food and drinks. Started with martinis, oysters and a kale salad (divine!), and shared a fried chicken sandwich and patty melt. Both the sandwiches were enormous (we could've shared just one), incredible, and came with delicious fries and salad. Rounded out the night with some of the olive oil cake, don't miss out on this for dessert!! Aish, I really wanted to like this place, but there were so many red flags that put my friend and I off. We came here on a dreary Saturday walking through the neighborhood and decided to give this place a shot since we needed some warmth. The interior was interesting -- the front half had tiled white walls which reflected the overhead exposed bulbs well, but the back half was sparsely illuminated and it felt really really dark and cavernous. In the half also, was the open kitchen. We took the high-chair table and ordered two mezcal drinks and a fish and chips to share. The drinks came quickly, but that was about the only positive...it was not well-balanced and didn't have any interesting going on for it. Moreover, the alcohol was barely noticeable at all. Usually, I get a mezcal drink for the taste (ie. smokiness), but I couldn't even taste the spirit in the beverage. To be honest, it tasted like watered down juice. The fish and chips also were just fine, but nothing that I would seek out. Altogether, a bit of an underwhelming experience, but I can't say I expected much else from gentrified Crown Heights. read more

Rustic New Years breakfast in Brooklyn. I'm assuming the crowd was scarce due to the pandemic since a Saturday brunch had the place empty but honestly I appreciated the space. Not many spots you go for brunch will have full tea service so I really appreciated the fact they had this and it seemed to be popular since they usually give a large teapot of water but all of them were being used so I got a little pot. The food took awfully long to come to the table considering the place wasn't full and then when my order arrived it had a hair in it. They quickly replaced the meal and comped my drinks for that which was good. The food was good, but the home fries need some rework as it was too crispy and needed more flavor. So, $2 oysters (briny goodness) all week from the start of dinner to close; Seemed just like the pick me up that would work to give me a boost in energy for my walk. Well....than I decided to have a drink, Maude Drank This, as I love Harold and Maude, I was onboard. (Drinks will be in order). Came here on a Monday night with my boyfriend craving their menu items. He had been here many times before and loved it. We asked the woman at the door if there were any tables for 2. She asked if we had reservations and we did not. She said they were all booked or something to that effect without even looking at the iPad in front of her. My boyfriend asked if they were doing bar seating and she just deadpan stared at him without an answer. . I had to break the tension and say "no, they probably aren't doing seating at the bar." She just stared at us until we left. Then after a minute, she came out and said actually they just had a last minute cancellation and that she didn't see it, with her tail between her legs. She told us to meet her around the corner and go in at the other entrance. We met her and there were two empty tables. She seated us at one and since there was no one else at the other table, we switched over to the next table. A waiter came and stated "What are you doing? That's not your table." Us "oh ok, we thought no one was seated there." Him "that's reserved." Us "ok we didn't know" We walked over 3 feet back to the originally table. Immediately after, the waiter asked "do you know what you want to order?" Us "no we just sat down" Needless to say, we left abruptly as the service was obscenely rude and clearly the staff hates their lives and do not know the basics to customer service and social interaction. What an unfortunate experience. Would have loved to give them our business but we will never step foot into this place again. Businesses like these should die. This is not the spirit of a neighborhood and if you think this isn't a direct reflection of your business, you better check yourself because you already wrecked yourself. read more

The brunch menu was a bit limited to us but we decided to have a couple cocktails and then order food. The bellini was good, the mimosas could of been better. We ordered the french toast, steak and eggs, a burger and the eggs any style. The drinks came fast but the food took a while to get to our table. The steak and eggs were really good. Yeahhh buddy. Came here a few days ago for brunch and the food did not disappoint. The inside is decorated really cute and the seating is mostly open with a breezy atmosphere. The shrimp and grits must be what a blowjob feels like. They did everything right-- shrimp were cooked perfectly, tender on the inside and finished on the grill to where it's slightly crunchy with a smoky flavor. The grits were silky smooth but the best part of this was the cheese they lay overtop the grits. By the looks of it, you can't see the cheese but dear lord you can taste it. Had my eggs poached in the center of the dish which added a wonderful textural element alongside the shrimp. Collards were delish too but sadly no bits of pork/bacon found within the leaves (usually the best part) but I still got down with it. Steep prices at $22 for 4 pieces of shrimp with grits and collards (both undeniably inexpensive). Service was on point and my friend and I never felt ignored nor smothered. I have a very negative review for this place based on my last visit. On November 4th during a brunch, Carlos ( wait staff/ manager ) approached me whilst my friends and I were sitting at the bar and accused me of making a homophobic slur towards a member of his staff. My friends and I were in complete shock, as we had been chatting between ourselves with ZERO reference to anyone's sexual orientation. Carlos said, " I saw your face " and asked me to leave. What does that even mean? My face is my face and maybe my expressions were animated during my conversation with friends. This unwarranted accusation, 1000% incorrect, embarrassed me in front of other diners and my friends, I did not leave, he was wrong!!! Carlos has to be made aware of his assumptions and to avoid future similar unsubstantiated episodes occurring. Aside of that, there are other wait staff that are a little 'aggressive' let's say, so needless to say, I will not be stepping inside this local joint ever again !
