So my son picked this place based on reviews and since he was visiting from out of town, I was more than happy to accommodate. The place is adorable. But, a few things. The steak kabobs were so over cooked and tough, could barely cut with the steak knife provided. Same with the steak in the lomo Saltado. The icing on the cake was when the (I assume) owner/manager snapped his fingers to get my adult daughters attention. That is just plain rude. This place is cute but way overpriced. I ordered through Uber eats. I did not like the food at all. I ordered the papa rellena and it was sour. I also ordered the lomo saltado; it ranged from bland to way sour if I took a bite with the juice on the bottom. They gave me a parsley plant in my food. It's like the chef has a thing for lime or something. I'm Peruvian. Grew up on Peruvian food and visited Peru many times. I've been missing Peruvian since I lived in Arlington, VA. So, it was a real nice surprise when I stumbled on Mayta's over in the Westfield shopping center. It's right by the Silver Diner on Rte 85 (Buckeystown Pike). I got chicken and beef empanadas, plantains, yuca fries, their camarones dish (Shrimp), and their steak dish with rice, fries, onions, and stewed tomatoes in a really tasty sauce. Overall, it's what I wanted. a lot of the Peruvian I've had is very rich, so we have plenty of leftovers and for the price, that's perfect. One thing I found interesting was that they do Peruvian-Chinese fusion dishes, which is something I'll definitely be back to try. This is the best small restaurant I've ever been to! Jorge (the owner) is so welcoming and wonderful! All of the staff are just as kind and helpful and very attentive. Every single thing that my husband and I have eaten here is mouth watering and delicious! Margaritas are made to perfection as is all of the food! On a whim we decided to try this place for some Peruvian chicken. I can always have Peruvian chicken. Who says no to juice, flavorful chicken?! (Ok, to be fair I didn't even have chicken at this meal, but that's just because there were so many other options)! This jaunt ended up with some experimenting, very favorable might I add. Since we're talking about trying new flavors, let's just jump into dessert first. We ended the meal with a purple corn/tapioca dessert. The dessert was warm and one side of the dish was the purple corn, which resembled dark grape jelly with the texture like thick pudding. The other half was tapioca. The server suggested getting the half corn and half tapioca because the flavors work really well together and 100% corn might be overwhelming for new tasters. She was absolutely right! We really enjoyed trying a new dessert. It was perfect that it was warm too because it was cold out. Speaking of the server, she was fantastic - super nice and helpful. Appetizer consisted of a sausage that was tasty and rich, complemented with a side of the pickled onions - delicious! I love those pickled veggies. One entree was from the specials menu for that day - duck on cilantro rice and the other was lomo saltado. The cilantro rice was very flavorful and a lovely green. The duck was well prepared but I could've used a few more slices (I was pretty hungry). The lomo saltado, an amazing comfort food was equally delicious (although the cilantro rice was probably better than fries...because cilantro rice). The beef for the lomo was tender, at least that small piece I ate since the entire plate disappeared by the time I came up for air from the cilantro rice. I can't wait to return to try more dishes. This place is delicious and the service is wonderful. The chef came out to make sure everything tasted fine too. UPDATE, with more photos: Had a craving for this place again. Still 5 Stars. I'd give it it an extra star if I could since I'm updating an already 5 star review. Food was FANTASTIC! Service was wonderful. Helpful advice on what to get and the staff checks up on you to make sure everything is ok. It's more than ok! We had the lamb rack with creamy rice (a special) and beef, chicken, shrimp skewers (why have one type of meat when you can have three)! The lamb and rice were perfect - perfect as a comfort food. I could probably eat it everyday. The shrimp for the skewers was so tender and fresh. The beef was on the tougher side but the flavor was excellent. (And by tougher I mean tougher for me bc I get lazy chewing meat sometimes so that's my own issue. I don't actually think it was overcooked). The server also recommended a good beer with the skewers. Didn't have dessert this time. Can't wait to go back again. I think next time we will try the brunch! What a hidden gem! read more

I got the Peruvian Pollada. The chicken was great and cooked very well. Crispy skin but still juicy. I didn't care for the potatoes that came with it, and the Peruvian corn was different. My wife got a NY strip with chimichurri. It was very good and also cooked perfectly. Our waitress was extremely helpful, as this was our first experience with Peruvian dining. We ordered food for 110 people from Jorge and it was amazing! Chicken, beans, rice, sautéed vegetables, and yuca fries and special sauces. We got so many positive compliments on how good everything tasted! Jorge and his team are awesome. Very flexible when we needed to adjust quantities two days before pickup, and reasonably priced. What can I say except yum? Mayta is a bit of a hidden gem if you don't leave the general downtown Frederick area (even maybe even if you do!) It's a nice place with just enough decor to be welcoming without being too fancy. Great to grab a quiet dinner or even take out after a long day. The chicken is delicious and very flavorful and I love the green sauce. The sides are even better and I've been known to get an order of the fried rice specifically to bring home. And the rice and noodle dishes are excellent. The soy sauce is just a little sweet. Oh and the fries. I love any meal that involves sauce and food over fries. Their pollo saltado is so good. Mayta's is hands down the best Peruvian food I have had to date. From their charbroiled rotisserie chicken, to their Asian inspired cuisine, to the arroz chaufa, to my favorite dish, lomo al jugo. Chef Jorge is always a pleasure to speak to and the food is always delicious. Don't hesitate to come and try the food. You will become a regular. The restaurant is always clean and staff always friendly. There are plenty of Peruvian places around, but this is more on the fine dining end without the price tag. Alrighty.. sitting here eating my ordered meal: 1. Beef empandas 2. Tres lesches cake 3. Dark 1/2 chicken w/ plaintain and rice. The portion sizes were amazing but wasn't too impressed with the taste. The empandas weren't bad, nice amount of filling and supple. The chicken looked dry but was actually quiet soft and tender. The problem with the chicken is that it had no taste, I kept dipping it in the sauces they provided hoping to add some flavor. While the leches cake was mega huge.. kudos for the size, didn't enjoy it. I knew they wouldn't match up to my favorite tres leches cake but still had high hopes for them. The place is super cute. This spot is new, I woulf say give them a try. I'm sure with time they will work out the kinks and blow all our minds. read more

Decor/ Ambience - 3.5 stars Took Mom to lunch for Mother's day. It was nicely decorated and had a cosy, homey feel. Naturally there were lots of families there but it was not too crowded and overbearing. We ordered the Arroz con pollo, Arroz chaufa de Mariscos, 1/4chicken with chaufa rice, yuca and plantains and Camarones. Food - 3.5 I loved the salty/ sweetness of the sauce on the grilled Shrimp for the Camarones dish. The chicken was perfectly roasted and juicy and moist. Arroz con pollo was good but something seemed off about the rice. Perhaps it needed a bit more seasoning and the rice seemed a tad overcooked. As always, the plantain and yuca fries were hot and tasty!! The other highlights were the mango amd passionfruit drinks. As a Caribbean woman, its a cardinal sin to mess these up!! They were so good!!! Service- 4 stars The staff were welcoming and quite helpful. It was also nice of the owner came to our table. My wife and I arrived at Mayta's last night for dinner about 6pm. The restaurant seemed busy, it had a table of 11 people and a mix of tables with 2 to 4 patrons. We got menus right away and decided to order the Chorizo sausage appetizer while we decided what to have for dinner. Maybe 5 minutes later we order the Bistec a lo Pobre and the Carne Asada for our dinners While waiting for the appetizer, the waitress brought our a chicken soup which was compliments of the chef. The soup had a great flavor and nice pieces of chicken. We both liked it and it reminded my wife a a dish from her home country. The chorizo sausage was very flavorful and nicely spiced. The sausage had a nice sear on the outside. We are glad that we got an appetizer because our dinner was served at 7pm. I'm not sure if the waitress put the dinners in right away or the # of people eating caused the backup in the kitchen. The Bistec a lo Pobre per the menu was to be served over Peruvian white beans but came with french fries instead. We were not asked if we minded if there was a substitution or not. My wife said the steak was lacking seasoning. From other photos on yelp, it looks like the cook put the egg and the garnish on the wrong items. The egg should have been on the steak. I thought the Carne Asada which the menu said was a "marinated" grilled steak was also lacking flavor. It didn't seem to be marinated at all or if it was, you couldn't tell. It also came with rice and seasonal vegetables (green and red pepers, onions, diced carrots, corn, and peas). To me those aren't seasonal veggies more like a stir fry mix. Overall the meal was good but it might be a while before we try the restaurant again. read more

I stopped in for dinner the other night. I had the Octopus parrillera. It was awesome! The portion was large but it was tender, with just a bit of char from the grill, drizzled with black olive aioli and creole sarza. It arrived on a bed of roasted potatoes and side of radish salad. The service was split about 50/50 for eat in vs take out. If you want to try something beyond the standard Peruvian chicken, I recommend you give this place a try. read more

Update: So, a mixed review. We returned to brunch recently with a group of about 8. Almost everyone raved about the food. Exceptions were undercooked beef and undercooked egg. Egg was sent back to be cooked and beef, ordered medium-well, was rare. The rest of our group raved about the food and I know several have returned. So why the 2-star rating? Well partly cause we were hosting the brunch and I wanted things to go off really well. We arrived just as they opened for Sunday brunch and there was only one other table the whole time we were there. Still - it was 50 minutes!! until the first morsel of food arrived on the table! Waitress was pleasant, uniform (again, restaurant had just opened) was dirty with food spills obvious on shirt and pants. Yuck. I think she was new as twice when she placed drinks on the table they were delivered with such force they spilled - no wipe up or napkin offered. (I'm thinking, "why did I pick this place?") I went to use the restroom about 45 minutes after we'd arrived and the hallway leading to it was totally dark. Fumbled around and finally found the door. Little things, and again, most of the food was very good according to our group. I was put off by lack of cleanliness, slow delivery time of food, undercooked food. I did not mention any of this at the time. Our group really loves this place and wants you to succeed! Maybe keep the good (and there is a LOT) and spruce up the bad? read more
