My re-visit to this Mazama hub makes me want to resurrect ye olde doge meme: Much improved Such credit card acceptance Wow My chief beef last time I was here was the questionable service and foggy credit card policy. I'm happy to report that my service this time was super-friendly and they told me they accept credit cards for any amount. We bought sandwiches and ate them on the back patio/beer garden before heading out to climb in the Liberty Bell group. I would love to chill out here after a day of climbing, drink too many freshly tapped pints, and then stumble back to a tent but...they are only open till 6pm! WUT?! Probably my only remaining complaint. read more

Over the past 5 or 6 years or so I've watched the Mazama Store evolve. It used to be a place I'd go to buy a sandwich and chips or a lip balm. Now in addition to the basic fare of (good) soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. they offer an array of bulk food items (good stuff), refrigeration full of common and healthy foods, meats, smoked salmon, artesian cheeses, and drinks, a small assortment of wines and beers, yummy hot foods daily, seasonal clothing items, artesian bakery items / breads / desserts, a little freezer with some nice ice creams and such, and even some meditative stuff like candles and incense. Oh yes and they have an espresso machine and do all that. There's indoor and outdoor seating and you can buy gas. I like the options available to me here as I can choose something simply or I can choose something fancy. It's true, it's a "yuppie" or "upmarket" experience as they must cater to professional city people who have second homes there and are used to shopping at specialty markets in their neighborhoods and wanting that experience at their Methow homes. Have you looked at the price of real estate in the Methow Valley? Their clientele are in a higher tax bracket than most, so you out there (you know who you are) try to take these things into consideration before you diss 'em too much for giving their customers what they want :) Unfortunately, I've found the service to be consistently not super friendly so that's why I'm giving four stars. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. On the one hand, I was very grateful to have a source of gas, ice and beer on the way out into the woods. On the other hand, being the proprietors of the sole one-stop convenience store and sandwich shop around allows them to charge exorbitant fees and have crappy service. It was really frustrating trying to buy a sandwich. If you show up at 8:30 AM they have no sandwiches made. If you show up at 1:00 PM they're gone. For some reason, they were completely unable to just make a sandwich on the spot. Sometimes you will be handed a sandwich made from their delicious homemade bread. Other times you order the same sandwich and it's a pile of mushy ingredients between two pieces of ordinary wheat bread. Either way, they sell it as the same sandwich, same price, no heads up on anything except a snooty, over-the-shoulder reply that, "we only make the bread on weekends." WTF? It's funny that they're treated like a gourmet sandwich shop but a Subway can do better. Most of the rest of the store is 85% overpriced yuppie/hippie/organic tchochkies, tea, vats of special vinegar, things like that. They sell numerous hardcover gourmet cookbooks, and I saw a giant, fragile looking porcelain bowl that would have a hard time fitting into the back of an ordinary passenger car. The remaining 15% are useful items like ice, beer and a few normal OTC medications and other sundries you'd actually need or want before heading out into the woods. The rest of it is for vacationing bored millionaires staying at nearby resorts with holes in their pockets who feel they need to spend money on brand name so-called items with a vaguely eco-friendly theme. Unlike a normal gas station or deli, you can't even throw away the garbage from your car, which is kind of tacky. I've never before seen a sign over a garbage can ordering people not to use a garbage can, especially at a service establishment. I'd think that a hippie facility would at least have recycling bins, but I did not see any. The overall theme I see here is a little store in the woods maximizing their profits by taking full advantage of the scarcity of nearby goods and services and taking as many short cuts in service that they can get away with. They've put pictures of cute little goats on everything and heavily play up their homespun family business angle, but I'm not buying it. I just don't see that as a claim to authenticity, or a justification of the high prices or decadent junk they carry. That said, I'd return there for ice or gas again if I needed to, but I'll take better care to bring everything else I need from home, including good, fresh sandwiches. read more

Never thought I'd say a gas station in Mazama, WA. is a destination, but this one is. While their garden and Goat Cafe may be challenged in its serving of ice cream (I have never seen so many disgruntled customers grinning through their teeth and complaining about the lack of a "system") they seem to be blissfully oblivious behind the register. After all, its another perfect day in paradise. This is a quirky, adorable spot part old fashioned gas station (think old west meets 30s dust bowl) with an indoor cafe that looks to serve a mean breakfast (didn't try it, but the setting is perfect) to the Husky Ice Cream coming out of the molasses-slow but utterly charming outdoor Goat Cafe (no, I don't think the nervous kid serving out the window, and desperately hoping to get the order right each time does know the difference between a cone, a cup or a shake because all the wrong things seem to be appearing at the wrong times. But hey, no worries man. Chill out. Its all good.) Everyone is smiling here. The General Store looks like a movie set. This place is totally adorable. The owners are chatting with neighbors, and it turns out a friend knows a friend and isn't that cool, and they don't have time to notice the chaos because they are all so relaxed. This is Manzama, man. If you moved here, you might be relaxed and happy too. But you will just have to settle for an ice cream. Maybe a few licks will get you closer to calm, anyway, even if you don't completely go native. Don't worry if you don't see that ice cream for a while. Just hang out on the picnic tables, by the artful wrought iron gate, and relax. Ahhh! See? Worth the wait. read more

We found this spot on our way into the North Cascades National Park. The store looks very well designed and filled with variety of items, such as souvenirs/snacks/drinks. All the employees are wearing masks and hand sanitizers are available for covid19 precautions. They only have outdoor porta potty available for guests and doesn't seem to be cleaned very often. The sandwiches are pre-made and we stopped around 2 PM that we got lucky to acquire the last two Turkey Cranberry sandwiches. They don't make the sandwiches when you order; you order whatever is still available. From what I hear that their sandwiches runs out quickly. The sandwiches are a bit overpriced as I paid $20 for two without any sides or chips included. However, it is the only store in close proximity to the park so nice spot to stop by to stock up on whatever you need (gas, food, snacks, miscellaneous items, etc). The employees in the sandwich shop was very friendly, but the ones in the store as I was checking out wasn't attentive and distracted to chat with another employee, which I am disappointed with service. read more

Metropolitan Market of Mazama !! From the street this place looks unassuming, but once you walk through the front doors you are greeted by a fantastic selection of meats, cheeses, chocolate, wines, beers, and a bunch of other high-end sundries. This place would definitely give the Market or Whole Foods a run for their money if located in Seattle. They also have baked goods and even filled growlers with local beers. They also have a large selection of gifts for those people back at home which you decided not to invite on your vacation, but now feel bad because of it. Very cool place, worth the drive to check them out because I am pretty sure you can find pretty much anything you need. read more

Freshly baked goods, organic produce, Methow Valley made delicious items such as sauerkraut and stone ground mustard - what is not to like?! Their homemade sandwiches with mama lil's peppers and zesty mayo make for a great lunch on the go or to sit inside the shop. We got their sour cherry scone, French baguette (amazing), brownie, and some kind of bar - all were so so good!! Love the variety of condiments and groceries available to allow you a lovely meal in or delicious picnic on the go. They also sell Blue Star coffee that is roasted locally so grab a bag for home on your way out! Restrooms are super clean and the staff is friendly and efficient. Can't wait to come back. If you are in the area for XC skiing - there is a great selection of trails right behind the store which makes the stop convenient before or after your snow time. read more

Stopped here for coffee as we stayed at a cabin nearby. Paid almost $7 for a drink which was fine and left almost $2 tip. Noticed a jar of dog treats so I asked for 2 for our dogs while dropping the tip in the jar. She handed me 2 quarter-sized dog treats and said that would be 50 cents. What?!? Every coffee place I have been to would give some out for free so I was surprised but handed her the money anyway. If it's not the practice here, it would have been nice to know before hand they costed extra. I wouldn't have left that much tip or asked for them. What a ripoff. read more

The most unfriendly, uncomfortable "country store" I have ever been in. The deli sandwiches, soups and goodies may be decent, but they are extremely over priced. The employees don't know the meaning of "friendly customer service". They ignore you. Unless you are a yuppie and put on the airs, this is not the place to stop in at. I have been a local in this area (valley) since the 70's and would highly recommend driving the extra 13 miles to Winthrop, or picking up any supplies you need somewhere else. Even just stopping in for gas at this store is more complicated and uncomfortable than it should be. Nope, this is certainly not a place I recommend. Avoid, avoid, avoid! read more

This store is adorable. Its an eclectic gem in the middle of nowhere, well stocked, and well merchandised. The staff are friendly. The store bakes their own pastries and breads which are to die for. We stayed at the Inn nearby and came over for lattes, bagel sandwich, and the almond bear claw croissant every morning. So good! read more

One side of the store has food selections, I didn't look at that as we were heading to hikes both times we stopped but want to visit when we're back in the area! Visited Washington with a friend and they introduced me to this store. Aside from the fact of the quaint town in which it resides, I could believe what a wonderful store this was. To me it was an ultimate general store, if you will. Everything from shelved food, cookware, a deli to outdoor eating where you can enjoy the DELICIOUS Hand made sandwiches. This place is the only reason to stay in Mazama. It would be pretty amazing even in a city. Out here it deserves a full five stars. Small but carries pretty much anything you would need for cooking or camping. Great selection of gourmet items and then their baked goods are amazing. We went here at least twice a day during our stay and didn't get tired of it. We tried the bagels, the bread, a slice of pie, the veggie burger, ice cream, scones..... Everything was top notch and well priced for the quality. The pie is the best we've had for quite some time and so was the veggie burger. Amazing food. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a camping trip with, let's be frank, rather low expectations (it's a touristy area, after all) and was floored by the utter awesomeness of this market. The roasted vegetable-goat cheese-balsamic sandwiches on crusty housemade baguettes were incredible, as were the two cookie flavors we sampled (espresso-chocolate-walnut and "Mazamazon," if memory serves, featuring chocolate chunks and dried cranberries in an oatmeal cookie base). We were so impressed with the friendly service that we stopped here again on the way out of town for gas and additional beverages. Would totally return to check out the interesting selection of goods (local-ish produce, a tantalizing-looking chevre from Twisp and a small cheese counter, bulk goods, half gallons of Husky ice cream, a compact but seemingly well-curated clothing and cosmetic/toiletry selection). I have a few qualifications for what I consider to be the perfect getaway: first, it has to be secluded; second, it has to be dog-friendly; third, it has to have running trails or at least runner-friendly roads; fourth, I need a source for local, seasonal food and preferably an excellent selection of beer and wine...and an espresso bar doesn't hurt either. Yes, I know I have high standards. Mazama Store is therefore no small part of what makes my visits to the Methow Valley so satisfying and lusciously beautiful, since they fulfill the last requirement with plenty of room to spare. From cooking staples (tending toward organic or natural brands) to dish soaps like Ecover to local cheeses and meats to beer from Old Schoolhouse and Methow Valley (among others!) to awesome coffee mugs to a bakery case full of too-good-to-share cookies, coffee cake, sandwiches and other breakfast, lunch and dessert offerings to boxes full of local produce, you'll probably be able to find what you're looking for (even if it's a little pricier than you might pay at home). Although I tend to pack almost all my own food when staying at a cabin, it's nice to know I can head down the road a few miles in case I overlooked a necessary ingredient, or if I just need an americano, bottle of wine, or something sweet. I tend to visit in shoulder season, so I've never experienced much crowding or poor customer service; everyone seems perfectly friendly, prompt, and willing to help. There are plenty of picnic tables set up outside if you want a lunch al fresco, and of course the relatively new Goat's Beard outdoor store is tucked back behind the patio area if there's a hiking need not covered in Mazama Store. During a weekend way in Mazama, friends and I stopped by the Mazama store for a quick bite to eat/drink. While it took quite a while for the barista to make our coffees, mine was pretty tasty (especially for not being a Starbucks). The staff is nice and it's a cute ol' time store in Mazama - almost like a miniature Whole Foods or Met Market. My boyfriend also brought a mixed berry scone back to the cabin and it was delicious. Our friends also frequented the store for their sandwiches and said they were yummy. Cute place! Nice people! Fun, small-town atmosphere! read more

The Mazama Store is centrally located in "Downtown Mazama". In fact the store is downtown Mazama. Mazama is primarily comprised of crags, mountains, river, trails, backpacking camping, car camping and all sorts of back country possibilities. I have visited the store for years on my trips to the crags and mountains outside of Mazama. From a practical sense - Mazama store is a good place to get those last minute supplies, indulge in some awesome espresso and fresh baked goods or sandwich. They also have gas and some camping supplies. This can save a trip to Winthrop if you are coming from the West and have no need to go further East. When returning from an outdoor adventure I find the store a wonderful indulgence. Fresh baked goods and deli really hits the spot after being in the woods for a few days. Another aspect of the store that I really love are the people that work there. They all know the area and love the outdoors. It is a really good place to get information about where to hike/climb/bike/explore - and if the person you are talking to doesn't have the answer they will find someone there that does. There are a few outfitters in Mazama so if you have an adventure in mind you can always ask someone working at the store for more info and they will direct you where to go. My favorite time at the store is during the week and non-tourist times. The store is a little quieter and there is more time to talk with the locals. In my opinion the Mazama store is about as good as it gets for the setting. They definitely cater to the tourists during the season but have not lost the local, down home vibe. I've learned a lot about the area from simply talking with people from the store. While their selection of goods are enough for just about anything you need or want (luxury items) I believe their greatest quality are the people. Finally, if you don't need to buy anything but like to check out the "local culture" consider stopping in for a cup of ice tea or coffee. Sit on one of the deli stools and people watch or strike up a conversation. Even during the peak tourist times the experience is interesting. People are friendly and like to share their adventures. read more

We took highway 20, the scenic view , to AnaCortes. We stopped at The Mazama Store to eat lunch. We ordered 5 Zesty Turkey Sandwiches, 1 Barguette Turkey Sandwich, 2 Pesto Turkey Sandwich, 2 Raspberry Turkey sandwiches plus pastries and fresh baked bread. All looked good but those of us that got the zesty Turkey Sandwich felt granny texture in a couple of bites into the sandwich. Unfortunately, my niece found a bug in the pesto sandwich and a hair on a rasberry sandwich. I went up to the window counter and informed a blond lady with braids that the lettuce probably did not get rinsed well that we felt granny texture on our bites and one off the esto sandwich had a green bug and one rasberry sandwich had a hair in it. The blond lady with braids stared at me and said "ok" she turned around and began putting stuff away. She was not apologetic or sympathetic towards us about our terrible experience with their food. The sandwiches are not cheap they cost $8.68 each plus tax. Mazama Store doesn't care about good hygiene or customer service. They only care to sell their food and don't care after you pay for your good. They truly don't care , they claim to be owned and run by family members but they don't owned up to the type of good they sell. Mazama Store has awful customer service and awful attitude. We will not eat there again ever again. I don't recommend eating there but Incase you do I hope you get taken seriously and that they make the customer first priority. read more

Really enjoyed having a cold beer in the shade on their patio after a hot and dusty hike. And, they'll let you bring your dog on the patio, which it turns out is rare in the Valley. Not many restaurants allow pups even if they have patios. The food was not what I expected for the relatively high cost. Sandwiches are pre-made, the basic ham and cheese between sliced bread stuff, no fancy gourmet made to order stuff here. Better option is to snag one of the fresh baguettes and buy something inside the store to go with it. The fresh bread is fantastic. read more

This peculiar outpost was the most confusing and controversial part of our mission. What *is* the Mazama Store, exactly? Our crew could not agree. As ship's captain, I had briefed the crew on what to expect: a small-town grocery store where we might find provisions that could serve as lunch. Yet what we encountered did not confirm to the definition of "small-town grocery store" provided by the ship's computer. Instead, I believe that what we saw conforms to the common definition of "gentrified urban market". Evidence: Wide range of gluten-free baked goods and locally milled low-gluten flour. Cleaning products available in scents borrowed from culinary sources. Actual vinegar bar. (Note: Drinking vinegar is not recommended.) Nonetheless, my interpretation was open to dispute. The presence of an impressive selection of wines, beer and cider suggested the Mazama Store may in fact be a liquor market. An assortment of hand-crafted glassware, locally produced soaps and logotized t-shirts suggested we might instead have found ourselves in a tasteful gift store. Shelves full of cast-iron cookware, wooden culinary implements and fine ceramics indicated that we were in a housewares store. Most perplexing of all: the Mazama Store crossed all these different categories and yet STILL MADE SENSE. Starfleet protocols are very clear about the separation of different commercial purposes. Yet our observations of the Mazama Store suggest that combining multiple styles of retail into a single location may in fact be not only convenient, but quite charming. As for our lunch mission: Our chief science officer, who takes an excessively narrow view of what constitutes appropriate nutrition levels for our junior crew members, was initially concerned about the ability to obtain suitable nutrients in a form that would be acceptable to each species. Between the beautifully fresh produce, the appealing baked goods, and the ready availability of bovine mammary juice, we were able to find them sustenance. The older members of the crew enjoyed the prepared sandwiches and "legendary" burrito. (Note to Starfleet anthropology team: Please research the Legend of the Burrito before our next mission.) Finally, I would be remiss if I did not include some observations about the particular varieties of human who appear to be indigenous to the Mazama Store. These notes will be particularly valuable to future mission personnel who desire to blend into the local population. We suggest adhering the following attire options, as observed in situ: * male crew members to wear long, high-quality shorts in neutral colors, topped by t-shirts in muted tones bearing references to other wildnerness locations or outdoor activities. * female crew members to wear t-shirts in Earth tones, and/or bearing hybrid geeky/outdoorsy slogans (sample: "May The Forest Be With You.") * female crew members may wear short shorts in neutral colors, or athletic skirts of a type I have not seen since Starfleet discontinued dress-style uniforms for male crew members. Based on our observations at Mazama, I must encourage Starfleet to reintroduce the athletic skirt option for both male and female crew members. * all crew members must wear either Teva sandals, high-end trail runners or hiking boots. * optional accessories include: water bottle (metal preferred); backpack; baby tied to adult of either gender. Despite these detailed notes, I cannot claim that our crew fully comprehended either the human or retail offerings of the Mazama Store. Further study will be needed, ideally with a generous budget for research materials. read more

This little store is amazing! We went camping near Mazama for our vacation, and of course we forgot a ton of stuff, in fact an entire bin of things. The Mazama Store had us covered. I kept doubting this little store, thinking they are not going to have a funnel, but they had one, and exactly the type we needed for our RV. A little cooking pot to boil water for Mac and Cheese, both of which we forgot, they had both. And the Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies are wonderfully delicious. And we decided we wanted hamburgers for dinner on our last night, this little store had packages of six ground beef patties in the frozen section. I need to find out where they get these from, because they were the best beef patties I think I have ever had. Probably a local supplier who is doing everything right. Oh and one more thing, the peanut butter cups in the bulk section, don't leave without grabbing a few of those for the road, they are super good. And they also had my favorite Honey Crisp apples. I just can't say enough good things about the Mazama Store, they sure helped make our summer vacation far more enjoyable. The Mazama T-Shirts they sell are really cool too, and they have some great colors, I had to buy one. read more

This is one of our favorite places on earth. We LOVE it. We love the homemade bread. They have our favorite kombucha. The soups are delicious. We have so many cute mugs, t-shirts, cozy sweatshirts and tote bags from over the years. This place is the perfect spot to pick up a picnic in the summer and to warm up in the winter. Very nice setting and pretty good food. Got an egg sandwich, rye baguette, and some local fruit. The fruit was perhaps not quite as good as fruit we picked up later in the day from some road side fruit stands. The rye baguette was a fine baguette, but didn't have the dark, intense rye flavor that I personally look for from a rye bread--it basically seemed like a white flour baguette. read more

The Mazama Store is what is sounds like, a funky store in Mazama. This first place to stop after getting through the cascades on your way to Winthrop. It has a small selection of house made sandwiches and baked goods as well as delicious coffee - I suggest their cold brew on tap! The "grocery" items are pretty pricey but there are a lot of speciality, gluten free, and plant based packed foods and snacks. Pickup some groceries or a bottle of wine for later in the cabin and get your morning coffee before heading out. We ended up here daily after skiing in various trails around the valley. Getting there is half the fun, and this store/ bakery/ cafe proves that. We stopped in for some basic apples, cured meats and cheese and were so happy they had an awesome bakery in house. The baguette is magical, and is itself worth a stop off the highway. We stopped in again on the way home, with the friends we were meeting in Winthrop. All together, we took 4 or 5 loaves home between all of us. Really good espresso too. read more
