Ugh so disappointed! I usually always love a good traditional mexican restaurant and have driven past this one a lot so thought we should give it a try considering it's less than 5 minutes from our house. We were honestly surprised by how below average it was.. We always order the same dish from every traditional mexican restaurant, ciella y mar y tierra which is carne asada, chicken, and shrimp. I don't know what kind of meat the carne asada was but it wasn't a skirt steak.. We asked for medium rare and it was dry and tough and thick, not traditional carne asada. It looked like it came from frozen then boiled.. I will say the chicken was tender and good. Everything else was soo bland! I've never had such bland Mexican before and I've eaten alottt of mexican food. Also they charge for chips and salsa if you get more than one portion which I've never seen before lol. We kept trying to enjoy it as the service was great and the waiters were super friendly, but we just couldn't enjoy the food. Boring, bland, and below average. Celebrated a friend's birthday here! They were easily able to accommodate our group. I tried the Super Burrito and Chile Relleno combo plate. It was pretty decent, though I wasn't blown away. Quick tip - take note the rice and beans are extra charge! It's not much, but worth noting you have to ask for it. Overall not a bad stop! We stopped here while we were running errands on that side of town and what a surprise it was!! The service was fantastic, we had Lola and she was so sweet and attentive. The inside was soooo clean too, which we appreciated! We started with the queso dip and it was SO YUMMY!!!! We loooooved the bell peppers in it too. I got the lunch combination, chicken taco and cheese enchilada. The chicken taco was so delicious! It was a hard shell taco with marinated shredded chicken. The cheese enchilada was perfect! The tortilla was nice and soft, the cheese was super melty and the sauce was sooo flavorful! My partner got tacos el carbon and it was hands down the best steak I've ever had. The rice and beans were pretty outstanding too. All in all, I'd give our meal a solid 9/10. We will definitely be back! read more

Stopped in for lunch. I had been here before awhile ago and had the steak fajitas which to my surprise was not grilled but boiled and served in some kind of sauce. I did not like it at all. They have a large private parking lot, the restaurant is good size and includes a lounge. I smelled some sort of chemical when I came in the door. I was seated immediately as they were not that busy. I knew that I wanted the carne asada but grilled with fajita veggies instead of beans and rice. Flour tortillas as well. While I was waiting I received chips and salsa which were both good. Chips were warm. My order came within 10 minutes... Fast. The carne asada description states either a "skirt or new york cut". I did not see this. That's a big difference. Of course they gave me skirt steak instead of New York. I should of requested the NY. The skirt steak was tough. The fajita vegetables which are normally peppers and onion had carrots, zucchini and mushrooms added. The carrots were hard and not edible. The flour tortillas were not anything special. Just standard grocery store/food service tortillas. I was hoping for fresh... Since that is what I have received at most Mexican restaurants. The guacamole, pico and salsa were very delicious and the ice tea was fresh. I really think the menu description needs to be revised to state "skirt steak" if that is what you are serving. They are still using Styrofoam to go containers and plastic straws. read more

This place is so good... 'Traditional' American style Mexican. Who doesn't love this kind of food?' Big portions of delicious, well prepared offerings that please the palate and fill the belly with goodness. I've been going here about 3 Sundays a month for lunch with my elderly mom and my 3 year old daughter. The staff is super friendly and quite tolerant of my firecracker little girl. The food couldn't be more consistently good and I always look forward to the whole experience. Leftovers are always aplenty and delicious! I travel to the area every 7 to 8 weeks and this restaurant is my goto for an excellent Mexican food experience! Consistent quality meals and the same for service. Sitting near any window you'll see family after family arriving for dinner. The staff knows excellent service and are very attentive. Not only is the food quality excellent but the menu is diverse in its offering. Lastly, if you're salsa and chips are an important part of the experience, you will be pleasantly surprised, as the chiles taste as if they are grilled before being mixed into the salsa. Guy asked if we wanted small or large order, I ordered large because large usually feeds 3-4 and I'm thinking it's going to be typical of what you get when you dine-in. Total comes out to $21!!!!!! $6 for a lunch bag of chips, $6.99 for a 32oz of salsa! If I dine in and order a large are they really going to bring out a 32oz fish bowl of salsa!? This is one of the very best Mexican restaurants in the Portland area, in my opinion. Mexican food is my favorite food so I go to Mexican restaurants very often. Mazatlan is consistently delicious and they have a wide variety of classic Mexican dishes to choose from. The servers are very friendly and attentive. The food arrives fresh and hot. The atmosphere is clean and nice. I come here for special occasions but it's also a nice place to go to after a hard day. I'm giving 3 stars because they're missing some finer touches that would bump it up a little, but we were not at all unhappy with our meal. This place is near where I get my eyebrows and nails done so I've been curious about it for a while, yet never had an opportunity to pop in. We ordered via Door Dash, so keep in mind that the food traveled a little before we got to eat it. Among 3 of us, we had the carnitas, a burrito and chile relleno combo, and a taco and tamale combo. Each plate came with refried beans, rice, and a little salad/pico de gallo garnish. We also ordered horchata to try it out. Since someone else mentioned packing, I'll point out that our order came in paper plates lined with foil that were stapled together. It was a little strange, but actually quite effective. I just wish they would've written the order on top so we knew which was which before opening. We all enjoyed our food. Carnitas were dryer and less tender than it should be, but tasty. Rice was just average and the flour tortillas were not homemade, but the salsa & chips were delicious. Burrito, taco, tamale, and chile relleno were all fine (chile relleno doesn't travel too well, though). I thought the refried beans were delicious-so well seasoned; not the usual bland, boring stuff. Horchata was too sweet, IMO. Portions were ample. We girls made 2 meals of our plates. The dude killed his in one go (no surprise; he's a big dude). I would absolutely order/visit again to try more menu items. They didn't blow my socks off, but I'm picky having grown up in CA with lots of really good Mexican food. PROS: Happy Hour til 7:30, plenty of seating, Cantina was near empty; they have plasmas for watching sports, staff is friendly and attentive. CONS: Just your average "Americanized" Mexican food. Nothing superior by any means. $2.50 for a side of sour cream!? Lame. Overall nothing bad about this place. Plenty of menu items to choose from that's for sure. I liked that they brought both mild & spicy salsa out. They also give you beans to dip your chips in. Chips were fresh and warm...as they could be anyways. Salsas were good. Ordered a combo meal that I could only eat about half of...came with a chicken enchilada, beef taco, and tostada. Both the beef and chicken were flavorful and not really greasy. This I can appreciate. HH only had food specials that I could see. What erked me a bit was that HH plasic signage was only displayed on top of the bar...and in small print. I didn't even realize until after I placed my order. I was in the Cantina in a booth where no sign of HH was displayed. Guess I should have asked. Oh well, lesson learned. My combo meal is enough for 2 and it cost $11.50. Not terrible. read more
