My husband and I were visiting the area and wanted to find a good place for lunch along Mandeville Lakefront Park. I found McClain's on the map and checked Yelp. I have a sensitivity to gluten so I was delighted to find out they have a gluten free crust and a cauliflower crust. Today I chose the cauliflower crust and it was perfectly baked. My husband had their original dough and he said it was very good too. If you're looking for a fancy place, this isn't it. But if you're looking for a quirky little locally-owned restaurant with friendly and courteous staff and really good pizza, give McClain's a try. Best pizza on the Northshore, hands down. It is closest to Magazine Pizza on the Southshore, for reference, if you're looking for something to compare it to in New Orleans. You can tell everything is fresh and made from scratch. Very tasty and very convenient as well as fairly priced. I'll eat it a couple times a month when I spend time in Mandeville every other wkend. If you think Fat Boys is good, you might not like this more, but if you think Fat Boys is just mediocre thin slice NY style (which it is) then you should enjoy McClain's WAY MORE. Pretty good! The pizza was decent and very tasty. We also tried the salty balls, which are soft pretzel bits served with beer cheese. Those were amazing. First time trying this place and two strikes: 1. Long hair baked into my pizza 2. We ordered a "Dylan's Snacker" along with a garlic breadsticks appetizer and it never came. In addition, my daughter's pizza took forever to come out in comparison to our pizza. I appreciate that our waitress took our hair-laden pizza off the check. But then we realized after leaving that we were still charged for the appetizer that never came. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time and the ambiance is great! So I feel like this place needs to step it up a bit. It looks unclean, the bathrooms don't even have soap. The picnic benches on the patio are dry rotting. So much so, that the bench cracked under my mom and her and my dad ended up on the floor. When the bench cracked the table fell and spilled drinks on my parents and children. The manager/owner came out and replaced the drinks that spilt. But nothing was comped off of the bill or anything. Kind of felt like that would've been a nice gesture for my parents falling on the floor. Then they added a 20% gratuity for our party to the bill. This is a counter service pizza place. This place gets 5 stars for hitting every aspect of what we were looking for. It's family owned, so that's a plus!! They home make all their sauces in house, plus plus!! And they are right on the lake front!! Beautiful location. Great pizzas. Downstairs they have a ton of games, it's more of a hangout spot, air hockey, foosball tables, picnic benches etc. Upstairs is where the restaurant actually is, with a pretty decent size balcony and a pristine view of lake Ponchartrain. Their cheese sticks appetizer is a full size pizza cut Into cheese sticks. It's delicious. It's super cheesy, and def. big enough to share with a group of 5-7people. Pizzas are a great size. The buffalo chicken pizza is my favorite. They have a small bar, with a select number of beers. During an event or busy time they sell pizza by the slice downstairs.
