I've been a fan of HIMYM since 2011 and to know that this was the bar that started it all, made me fan girl even more. Now the menu online was slightly different from the Holiday menu, no calamari but popcorn shrimp will do. That was the only food I ordered because after this visit, my friend and I, are headed to Ichiran which was like a nine minute walk so just drink and appetizer. So it just give us another excuse to book another trip to NYC and get food from here and see how good it is. The popcorn shrimp was hot and crunchy, perfect to share and reasonable price, can't come here without getting a drink, so I got two instead. LMAO. I couldn't decided Robin Sparkles and S.O.B., so I got both. LOL Let's go to the mall.....TODAY!! and you know Lily and her evil look/eye...and how she says sonnnn of a bitchhhhh aka S.O.B. Overall, the vibes and servers were really nice and fast. We didn't have to wait that long for a party of two, if you're in a party of four or more, it might be a little wait. They also have upstairs sitting, with a bar if you just wanted to order drinks. Can't wait to come back and yes they have restroom, upstairs and downstairs. read more

Was staying in New York for a few days and I saw online that this place was a huge inspiration for the pub in HIMYM. Took a stroll here and saw the ambience. It's different than the show of course, but the bartender is incredibly nice and the food is good. Show-inspired drinks aren't bad and are solid callbacks. read more

Strolled into McGees because it's part of my favorite show. How I met your mother! I will say upon walking in, I was expecting it to look like the show but I was catfished for sure, it looked nothing like the bar they had on the show. I said it once and I will say it again, they make a very good Shepards pie, which I would recommend pairing with a pint or two of Guinness. They have a bit of a claim to fame as the inspiration for McLaren's Pub on the hit TV series How I Met Your Mother and offer tours with discounts on food and drink. Although I understand the benefits of riding the coat tails of inspiration for how I met your mother, the pub clearly doesn't strive to be the best. They can pour a good beer or a glass of whiskey, but I would definitely not take a gamble on their mixed drinks, especially the old fashioned. I love to experience an Irish pub that has aged well, and this one is aging, but not all that well and as a result the ambiance seems to have gone from nostalgic to just another pub with TV's. My next visit to the area will most likely not include a stop here. Cheer! read more

Came here with a friend for dinner! We weren't super hungry so ended up getting the nachos and the Mac'n cheese as a light dinner but found the portion sizes were huge! Everything was super tasty and far exceeded my expectations! What I thought would be a novelty bar turned out to serve super delicious food. The only downside is that the main dishes I.e. if you got a burger are pretty expensive. Close to $30 for a burger is pretty pricey - the nachos and mac' cheese were both under or around $20 which is not bad for the taste and portion! I'd come back to this spot for a bite! read more

I used to love coming here, it was my post-theater go to. Last time I went, a woman asked, "Just one for the bar?" I was like "Ahh, yeah." Because it's a bar and grill and usually the bar part operates like, you know, a bar. But then she said, "Well I don't think I have any open barstools but if you go to the bar upstairs they might have something." I went to the bar upstairs and they did not, so I figured, "Well I guess if I don't have a seat then I'm not welcome here," so I left. I did walk by that same woman, she didn't seem at all that concerned that I was leaving. So I guess it's no longer a bar and restaurant, it a restaurant. It used to be welcoming, now its yelp page has a link get on a waiting list. How welcoming is that? McGee's is a traditional Irish pub with a variety of TVs for sports viewing. Situated on West 55th between Broadway and 8th Ave, it's in a prime position to accept mobs of patrons disgorged from broadway theaters and Carnegie Hall. Arriving after 10 PM, you're just as likely to see hockey fans catching the game as a symphony orchestra enjoying their afterparty. McGee's runs a complex operation with a relatively small staff that all work their asses off. Be patient when it's busy and tip big. If you're lucky enough to get seats at the bar during peak hours, expect a lot of action and movement around you. If you plan to order four courses of food, sitting at a table would provide more elbow room and a somewhat more relaxed atmosphere. There's also an upstairs, though I've never seen it and I can't speak to what goes on up there. McGee's is consistent, a favorable factor which goes far in my books. The food is fine, though I tend to stick with the less fancy fare. There's a vibrant social atmosphere which makes it an easy place to meet people; the level of conversation also provides cover if you want to be left alone. McGee's is one of those rare places where you can truly have it all (as long as they keep playing the Minnesota Wild playoffs games). read more

If I could give this zero stars I would. Hubby and I stopped in last night for burgers. Took about 20 minutes for a surly waitress to finally wait on us, and she messed up my burger order. Burger tasted like it was spoiled. Our waitress with an attitude comped us the price of one burger but I lost my appetite by then. Prices are also high for drinks , and no menu except for online one. Shout out to all of the How I Met Your Mother fans out there!! I heard McGee's Pub was the inspiration for the beloved McLaren's pub that the show's main characters frequented. So naturally while in New York I HAD to go!! My friend and I took a similar pose outside of the bar as the cast did during their visit. When we came inside, I instantly told the staff that I came all the way from California to pay my homage as a die hard How I Met Your Mother Fan!! We were fortunately enough to sit at the booth with the HIMYM cast photo. It was THEE booth to be at if you are a HIMYM fan. Their drink menu has all the stuff you would see at a pub and also a few specialty cocktails that are HIMYM cocktails. My friend went with the Ducky Tie ($12) that has bacardi limon, citronge orange, fresh line and cranberry juice and I went with the Robin Sparkles ($13) that has crown royal, apple pucker and cranberry juice. Our waitress was nice enough to take a photo of us at the booth and even better when she told us to look at each other and do a *cheers*, just as the cast of HIMYM was doing in their photo. Love love love it!! We also shared a Baked Potato Skins ($14) that took a while to came out but the wait was worth it. It looks really plan but it was surprisingly tasty for bar food. The baked potato skins had mozzarella, cheddar and a generous amount of bacon bits with sour cream on the side. There was 6 pieces so we had 3 each and it fueled our adventures for the next trek before dinner. I also purchased a shirt from them that says "It's going to be LEGEN- **wait for it** DARY". LEGENDARYYYYYYYYY!! Cheers to a good time with good friends. Highly recommend for all the die hard HIMYM fans out there, but honestly if you aren't a HIMYM fan it's pretty much a mediocre random pub in a sea of many many other options in NYC. read more

We randomly ended up here because we need to cool down with beer, it was really hot outside and we needed some break. Yes, AC definitely helped as it was hot as hell outside lol We sat at the bar and only had drinks... we stuck with the beers. Service was quick and they checked on us often. Came here last year with my boyfriend around Christmas time and wanted to check out the famous HIMYM bar. Food and drinks was good, but what turned me off was when I went to the bathroom and came back I asked my boyfriend where my drink went as I wasn't done and he said the waitress needed the table and we were going to have to leave. To be a paying customer and shooed away like that really upset me, as we hadn't even been there that long and I wanted to finish my drink. My mother owned restaurants when I was growing up and I have been a waitress before. I would NEVER do that. (Tip had already been added on too - messed up ) read more

14 December 2025 The guiness pour was excellent. The food was atrocious. I've been to many Irish pubs and have never encountered anything but true Fish & Chips. McGees serves, essentially, Ms. Pauls fish sticks for $25.50. "Irish Curry" was garbage as well. They serve frozen dinners heated up in a microwave for $$. Gave one star because of the good beer. The buffalo wings were scrumptious. The waiter didn't come around often though. The vibe of the tables and music were good. I have always wanted to come here because the creators of How I Met Your Mother frequented this bar and is what ultimately impaired the bar in the show. It is your typical Irish bar with HIMYM photos on the wall. I liked the atmosphere and it was nice to see the signed pictures. I didn't come in expected a five star meal and overall I thought my burger was very good! The prices are a little expensive, but that comes with the territory of coming to eat dinner in NYC. As most of y'all here, I came here as a tourist attraction while in New York. I love HIMYM and wanted to see the bar it was inspired from. And from my experience, I think they know exactly that bc that's all they have working for them. Besides the photos on the wall, its not like the show, and that wasn't the problem because the pictures were nice. But even for an Irish pub, this place feels so basic. The food is awful. I had the salmon and it tasted old. The vegetables had zero seasoning. My kids said their burger tasted like cardboard. The service was even worse. We waited for 5 mins for someone to even acknowledge us after we sat down. After they took our order, we never saw the waitress again until i flagged her for the check. It was buss boys who brought out our food and gave ha refills, mind you, the place was mostly empty on our side. They took so long to acknowledge us after dropping off the food, that I seriously contemplated leaving since the food was terrible anyway and they sat us by the door. When the check came, there was already a 20% tip added even though it was just 3 of us. It makes sense why they dont give a damn about service, because theyre getting a tip regardless. Definitely not worth the money. If you're going for the show, get drinks only, which also werent great. read more

We contacted Frank about a private birthday party. He was so friendly and accommodating. He gave us the second floor bar which was perfect for our gathering. Warm and intimate without being too small. And there were tables available in case anyone wanted to eat there. Our bartender, Keira, was friendly, fun and efficient. The food was fine. I had chicken curry and my wife had fish and chips. Maybe I'm a rube. I live in the Bronx. That plus 2 Cokes was $62. Is that what lunch costs in Manhattan? The creators of How I Met Your Mother based the bar on the show on this bar. Should you visit this bar if you were a fan of the show? A smaller spot just north of Times Square with a How I Met Your Mother Theme. We were told that the show writers used to come to this bar and then drew some inspiration from this spot for the TV show. They have fun drinks that are based off of iconic moments from the TV show and fresh, hot food coming out of the kitchen. It's worth a quick stop in just to see all of the HIMYM decor and to try one of their themed drinks... like the Robin Sparkles! read more

I enjoyed my first visit to this pub. The staff members were amazing and the food options were varied. The daily drink options helped set the mood for lunch with friends. I enjoyed the Chicken Quesadilla from the appetizer menu along with a refreshing Cranberry Margarita! This is the kind of place where you want to go and indulge with friends for a few hours. I enjoyed the vibe. The other patrons were friendly as well. For dessert, I had the Housemade Apple Pie, it was scrumptious!
