I went on a weekday night with my little dog. We were seated on their big lovely patio. We had the farmhouse burger which had bacon and a sunny side up egg. Burger was yummy. The waitress was so nice to me and my dog. We had a great time.

They've recently remodeled the Pike Creek location and it's created a really cool, updated vibe, while maintaining the Irish pub look and feel.

I learned later that this restaurant has been around since the early to mid 1900's. Plenty of parking in a large open lot. The place is very large and has one of the longest bars I've seen. The wood is very dark and you can see the chefs cooking over the hearth. They don't take reservations and won't see you until your entire party is there. One of the things I liked for our party of 10 was they had no problems with seating as they also have many large round tables. For mixed drinks, they make them pretty big and potent. For my martini, they sent back an extra glass. They also had great bleu cheese stuffed olives. We ordered onion rings (8 large to an order) and fried zucchini. The onion ring I had was pretty good. I didn't have the fried zucchini but heard it was also pretty good. Other than the light fare items, all dinners come with their salad bar which has both iceberg lettuce and Caesar Salad along with many fixings as well as cheeses and bread. I had the Baked Seafood Platter which came with scallops, shrimp, Clam Casino (without the shell), Maryland crab cake and a small lobster tail for $49.99. My wife had the baked chicken breast which she said was quite dry. The dining area is quite large and reminds me of the restaurants at a casino. Some in our group said it reminds them of Medieval Times due to the dark wood vibe. While I thought it was a bit pricey, I would still come back and try their signature steaks or prime rib.

The salad bar is classic: Caesar salad, iceberg, blue cheese, bacon bits, etc. Meet family here for a fancy night out, and it was a blast. Service was good. Portions are generous, so be prepared for leftovers. We had steak and eggs for breakfast the next day. Big steaks, big baked potatoes, unlimited salad. Come hungry. Good to know: It is a splurge. Also, they won't stay you until the entire party is there. We waited at the bar for everyone to arrive, where one cocktail was more than enough for me. You definitely get your money's worth, and you should not drive afterward. (I did not.)

The ambiance is great, especially in the warm weather, outside. The food is ALWAYS delicious, thanks to Dillon. Sarah and Tania are on top of their game behind the bar. It is a tiny building but they are doing it right! There is complimentary valet parking which was great because I have no idea where we would have parked. We were seated at exactly 4:30, and our server was friendly and fast. RJ and I ordered Downeast Peach Mango Cider which was refreshing and delicious. We started with crab and artichoke dip and beef and weck eggrolls, and our table ordered 2 fish and chips, the "Luxury" seafood pie, shepherd's pie, and the beef on weck sandwich. My weck included onions, mushrooms, swiss, and bacon with a side of au jus and horseradish. Yum, what a salty, savory, spicy combo. The roast beef was very tender and juicy. The fish and chips were all enjoyed, as were both pies. We did not make it to dessert but will try that again another time. We were in and out in about 1 hour without being rushed at all. We will definitely return to the Whip!

We started with the crab dip bread bowl (3.5) with two beers. The crab dip was very good...filling. And then we had to go with the tavern classic and award winning fish and chips (4.6). It's been many things in its history, but it's been Jessop's Tavern since 1996. (The family who owns the restaurant named it after a cooper named Abraham Jessop, who lived and worked in the building in 1724.) The restaurant has a great menu of food (including dishes inspired by the cuisines important to New Castle's early history: smorgasbord, a Dutch-inspired pot roast, etc.) and an incredible list of beers (200 Belgian beers, 20+ Belgian beers on draft, and more). We shared the Jessop's Tavern Crab Dip (served in a sourdough bread bowl) for the table, and I had the New Sweden Meatloaf for my entree (meatloaf with a vodka cream sauce and lingonberry preserves). I also had a couple of colonial ales - Washington's Porter by Yards Brewing Co. (I liked it so much, I had two). The service was good, and the ambiance is great: full of colonial charm. I'm sure there are other great places to eat in New Castle, but eating at Jessop's Tavern is a special place to grab a meal if you're spending the day exploring New Castle and learning about its history.
