The venue was very pretty the lighting and stuff set up was beautiful as well as the outside area that overlooked the ocean. They're a cute little water fountain there as well. That at night time is lit up. Looks extra special. Service was you know OK? It wasn't the best I've ever had from a venue like that, but it also wasn't the worst. The bartender was absolutely amazing. She went out of her way to make the special drinks that were meant for the bride room. She never really rushed anyone she was really on top of her game. I wish that it gone all the way down the road when it came to things, but I was at my best friend's daughter's wedding reception and that's all that really matter to me. I wouldn't go again having experienced what I did. The appetizers were very good. They had bacon wrapped scallops, big shrimp and also like a wrapped cheese quesadilla that was delicious. I wouldn't exactly say the same same about the main course unfortunately, when they were serving the appetizer of the lemon sorbet they had run out before they served everyone so myself and two other people at my table did not get any. I did steal bite of my husband, and that was delicious. Then the next course which was the main course, my husband, salmon was warm, just like the gentleman next to him, but they both complained that they were very dry. We did ask for a lemon, and the young fellow told us that he didn't have any and I guess we couldn't go to the bar to get it, but they didn't offer it. Then the food came out for me and it was cold and it had a gravy on it. It was supposed to have been marinated grilled chicken and shrimp, but the shrimp looked poached. It actually looked like it came from a shrimp cocktail. It was big, but it was not grilled or anything wasn't marinated. The chicken was very plain looking at stuff so I did ask them to take it back cause I can't eat the gravy and things I'm dieting and I can't have any extra stuff so like gravy, etc. it also came with some vegetables. The carrot was delicious. It was cooked but again everything was very cold. They did take it back. Brought me one with no gravy but again it came and the shrimp and chicken was still cold. The potatoes were hot, but I can't eat potatoes. I can't have rice on the plate as well. I can't have rice the vegetables. I ate them because it didn't matter if they were cold or hot they're supposed to be OK. But I was kind of disappointed in the fact that this great meal of this beautiful wedding was not anything like I thought it was going to be. Then they did bring out this really cool dessert a little ways along the road is really cool dessert it has it was like a flaming sorbet type of thing I had ice cream and tropical covered strawberries and like a soft sauce, that was very pretty. It is an Irish-owned joint and features a pancake house-like vibe and bric-a-brac decorations that belong in an elementary school classroom such as paper/plastic wall hangings of Irish themes of gold pots, rainbows, and leprechauns, etc., as well as party streamers and the like. My One and I came here to eat and that was the focus as were quite hangry after a morning of flea-market shopping. Anyhoot, Moey got the Fish n' Chips and I got the Fried Seafood Pladder. Her dish was very generous with a big-ass piece of fish and lots of fries. My Pladder was a MONSTER and certainly not to be trifled with. Tons of everything and with fries AND rings. Deep fried to perfection. Everything was great! I was on Cloud 9 as I attempted to krush this whole Pladder. I am a real pig and do not play games when it comes to hogging out. I have been coming to McGovern's for many years the food is always top notch. I've had from pasta, to seafood, to chicken, meats, soups and salads! There stuffie is out of this world and there stuffed mushrooms are the best I ever had. The service is great and so friendly . Food was mediocre wasn't very hot. It was lukewarm. But the real issue was the service. Our drinks came quickly but that was the only thing that came in a normal time frame. We order calamari for starters. Waited 20 minutes for it to arrive. I will say it was tasty. However our meals took 40 minutes to get to the table. And at that only 3 of the 4 showed up the forth took another 10 minutes. Several items of the meal did not come with meal as ordered we had to asked for them. Overall not a good experience. Arrived at our 5:45 reservation for our mom's birthday, and didn't leave until 8:30. It took 24 minutes to receive our drinks, and place our order. I would understand if they were busy, but there were only 3 other tables in the dining room. Over the next 45 minutes, our server came back 3 times to tell us that they were out of items we ordered. It should not take that long to realize that they are out of not one, not two, but three items that were supposedly put in the system 45 minutes prior. We received our food at 8pm, one hour after the restaurant closed! One of the plates had hair in it, but it was too late to order anything else. Refills took 15 minutes or longer. We had a cake for my mom and weren't even able to sing happy birthday or eat it . At that point we just wanted to leave. We took the cake still in the container home. McGoverns has been a go to restaurant over the years. We have enjoyed their amazing service dining in as well as doing takeout. I have been here following funerals as well as for corporate events. They can house anything in their spacious halls. I would love to say that their food is consistently awesome; however, sadly it is very hit or miss. When it is good, it is good. But when it's not it can be bad. I still feel that they are worthy of four stars due to the awesome service and the fact that I know they are capable of that level of quality. My wife and I stopped in at McGoverns for lunch...usually the food is great and the service quick but unfortunately the woman that runs the kitchen (Amy) wasn't in today. We waited for 30 minuted for our food while the staff ran around in what appeared to be total confusion, even though there was only 5 tables seated. The food was not up to their usual standard and to say we were disappointed would be an understatement. My favorite dish here is the boneless fried chicken dinner! I consider it "comfort food". I have been enjoying this meal since I was a little girl... Tonight, we both started with a cup of chowder and my husband decided to try the veal cutlet and he said it was very good and I of course had the boneless chicken... Delish! Descent sized menu with many daily specials, the service is great and the prices are very affordable. Great restaurant for a large group, or just a quiet dinner for two. Would like to give it another shot because I enjoy Italian food, and it's harder to come by in NE which is understandable as they are known for their seafood. This place maybe the only one I go for Prime Rib, but it's seafood is sub-par. Meaning, go somewhere else for decent seafood... The baked stuffed lobster was dry and over cooked. The fried clams and scallops ($28.99) were seriously lacking! I got two whole bellies; the rest were strips. The scallops were point on, but it all comes in a 6X3.5 inch dish! Oh.. my...gosh.... Why did we wait to come here until the days before we MOVED AWAY? It's like walking into Grandma's house, where she makes the most amazing comfort foods that you almost forgot about until they reappeared on this menu. The Clam Bake (with our without clams) is freaking awesome and it comes with a bowl of butter, regardless of whether you get clams or not. Dipping those potatoes and corn on the cob in butter put me in chubby girl heaven. The Bourbon Tips were so incredibly moist it was hard to believe they were steak tips at all. The sauce was a perfect blend of sweet and salty. Oh my gosh, the Littlenecks and Pork were off the hook. We brought home the extra broth to marinate and make a little portuguese steak with! Also, our waitress was awesome. She was bubbly but not annoying, and got really excited about menu items so much so that we had to order everything she told us! So our slip fell on the floor, I kept saying out our number but it was in the floor, we waited 2 hours kept asking if our take out was ready orders were leaving even people who ordered at desk, finally someone listened. They filled the order and apologized. We were very patient. The food was great 3 orders of corn beef cabbage. The cashier should be younger. The flow that night was too busy for her. What can I say about McGovern's? This has been a favorite of mine since I was little. Paul Jr I think is retired so the kitchen is run by the younger generation of little McGoverns. They do a good job. I rarely leave there disappointed. The only reason I didn't give a 5th star is because the wait staff is a little slow sometimes. And if it's warm in the restaurant, I get a little cranky sitting there waiting for service. The food isn't fancy. If your looking for Gordon Ramsay master pieces your in the wrong joint. This is home style local food at a reasonable price. I almost always get the boneless fried chicken. But now I've discovered the salmon snow pie. It's rich flavorful and hearty. A seafood lovers dream. It comes with large sea scallops, shrimp crab meat and salmon under a layer of mashed potato and a rich sauce almost like a Newburgh sauce. Topped with a nice plump lobster claw. If you eat this in one sitting, your probably a glutinous fat ass. But truth is, it's too hard to save for leftovers. They make good quahogs but the chowder is a little bland. Surprise you Grammy and Grampy with homemade scones. Their chicken and rice soup is ok. I like it, but it also is a little bland. I haven't been there in a few years due to covid, but today I decided to get a turkey dinner for take out. what a disappointment. it's nothing like it used to be. there was quite literally no flavor in any of it's components. they no longer offer dark meat, so they must be roasting just turkey breasts instead of the whole turkey. the gravy was watery and tasteless, mashed potatoes tasted like they weren't seasoned, butternut squash-bland. stuffing, omg so bland. the only thing that tasted as it should was the cranberry sauce and rolls! they definitely need a new cook or they'll be going out of business, but the way things stand-that wouldn't be a loss, in my opinion. read more

If this review were just for the food it would be three stars. The food is A-OK for what it is, which is basic home style comfort food. There will be nothing unique or mind blowing about the food, but it is consistent. I recently attended my niece's bridal shower in the upstairs Laurel Room. I hadn't been in this room in years and it was given a nice face lift. Everything was light, bright and airy with large windows looking out over the water. There is a separate entrance to the room on the side so you don't have to walk through the restaurant. While I didn't see the large banquet room downstairs I have heard that has been updated as well. McGoverns knows how to put on a function. The shower moved along well, the servers and bartender were friendly and personable and everyone had a good time. We had a buffet style brunch, with eggs, french toast, bacon, ham, potatoes, corn, chicken, fish and pasta salad. There were separate tables with mini desserts and fruit and muffins. The food was hot and decent. I have no complaints about it, just basic home style comfort food. The grounds are lovely, with a gazebo and it is right on the water. From personal experience I know the grounds are good for taking wedding photos as my own reception was there over twenty years ago. Ramona and Kathy seem to be running things now just as well as they were back then. My family and I go here regularly, and always have a good meal. The wait staff are friendly and seem to enjoy their employment there; We are greeted in a friendly enough manner, but when we sit down is when the wait staff shines. Since we go often enough, we get the same wait staff usually, and they're never rude, and often have light banter with us, which does help with a nice dining experience. The atmosphere is familiar, decor doesn't change super often, so a homey feel is present due to the familiarity. The food has never been bad (I recommend the Meat Lasagna, huge portion, done right), everything prepared right, never over-cooked or flavorless. It's a generally traditional menu, but they do run specials, and that seems to toss in enough choice so that the selections don't become stale. Prices are never outrageous, and you never walk out thinking you didn't get enough for your money. They have a massive parking lot, so there's never a problem with that, Always choose this place over the "The Page's," which is overpriced, and full of winged beasts (see my review for the restaurant with "Le" in the name). read more

We went for my niece's wedding and the location was convenient for many folks coming from surrounding MA and RI. The ceremony had a beautiful view and the ceremony organizer was helpful and friendly. The food was plenty and very good; specifically the pasta and the sauce and the potato croquette. The steak was a little over done, but the chicken was delicious. We really enjoyed the flaming dessert and it was just as tasty eating it as it was watching it dance to our tables. However, there was one staff person who was really inappropriate, appalling and out of order quite often during the event. I believe his name was Joey. During the bride getting ready for the ceremony, he came into the bridal suite and told the maid of honor getting the bride's shoes on to hurry up and then he began to help. During the dinner, he approached the bride and tucked her napkin into the front of her wedding gown! His manners were not one would expect from the head waiter. The bartenders were not the most friendly for a wedding. I'd expect more of a welcome when approaching the bar during a happy occasion. read more

My parents love this place and live very close by so I've been here many times. This place has been around for YEARS. I don't know how many but as long as I can remember. It's family run and feels very much like a family restaurant. Meaning, kind of cheesy decor, service is so-so, the menu's enormous and food is good and relatively reasonably priced. A few items are highly recommended. Mainly their boneless chicken dinner and I'm a fan of the grape nut pudding which i think is a regional speciality. There's always a long list of specials and they also have good seafood. The last time I was there I got the broiled scallops which were really delicious. I had the individual attention of a planner (family business member) to help me through the whole wedding process. We were married in the Gazebo on the grounds there, decorations and seating provided and included in PPP. JP recommended by them and myself- Joyce Boredemos, will make your ceremony unique! The food was outstanding, X-large stuffed shrimp, petite sirloin and grilled chicken breast all cooked to perfection! McGovern's is my go-to (and favorite) place to eat. The wait staff is great and super friendly and the food is about as down home as it gets. My boyfriend and I eat here at least a few times a month and I've never had a bad pick. Fair warning, some of the food is not quite what you might typically expect. An example of this would be their Chicken Marsala. It is chicken breast tenderloins in a sauce that is marsala-like but definitely not a traditional Italian interpretation, but it is delicious! Prices are great and so are portions. The bread here is super yummy and you have the choice of Portuguese sweet rolls or the smaller dinner rolls you'd normally expect. I highly recommend the French Onion soup or the Fried Green Beans as a starter. The French Onion comes in the traditional crock and the whole thing is covered in a slice of cheese that is then put under the broiler to melt. The Fried Green Beans come in a basket that's perfect to share with 2 or 3 people or even eat by yourself. Hey, it's vegetables right? Notable menu items include the Fried Veal, Italian Platter (complete with a few stuffed shells, meatballs, chicken parmesan cutlet and your own slice of garlic bread), the Salmon Snow Pie (think of a seafood Shepard's Pie with chunks of salmon, lobster, and other seafood goodies), and my personal favorite the Filet Medallions. You get 3 medallions with a few hand breaded onion rings on top and choice of two sides. As far as I'm concerned, there are really only two options for sides here - the mashed potatoes (or garlic mashed, if they have them that day), and the butternut squash. I promise you will NOT be disappointed with either of those! To top it all off, McGovern's brews their own unsweetened Iced Tea daily and has a fabulous selection of goodies in their dessert case. The Red Velvet cake is notable because it has layers of fudge along with the cream cheese frosting as well as some fudge drizzled on top with nonpareil sprinkles and mini-chocolate chips. They also make a stand up French Silk pie, similar to a chocolate cream, and the cheesecake is made fresh daily with a hand-shaped graham cracker crust. Overall, the atmosphere here is like visiting grandma's house. If you're looking for some fancy, stuffy hot spot look elsewhere. McGovern's is simple, honest, and down right delicious! read more
