McGrath's Ski & Board Rentals was just okay for me. The process was smooth and easy -- I got there early and about 10 minutes later I already had my rental board, which I really appreciated. The staff was easy to deal with and everything went pretty quickly. That said, the snowboard I received was kind of old. You can definitely notice that the boards and bindings have some age on them, and the edges felt worn. They also don't carry fancy or newer design boards, so if you're looking for the latest models or something high-end, this might not be the place. Overall, it's a convenient spot if you just need something quick and functional, but don't expect premium or newer gear. read more

Five star for good customer service as they did give me full refunds and they sound like nice people. One star for terrible boots (they are not real snowboard boots) and bindings that did not fit the boots properly! I normally rent my kids' boots and board at Mt High, Big Bear, and Mammoth ski resort, but they usually cost more or have longer lines, so this time decided to find a local shop to save time and money. Renting was very fast--no long lines and easy paperwork, that was the good part. However, first they gave my kid a very short board. I've already rented 4 times at the three ski resorts mentioned above for my kiddo so I know the right size board for my kid. I asked for the correct size board which they switched for me. When I got to Mt High, I realized the binding is way bigger than the boots, even at the tightest, I can still fit my whole hand between the binding and boots, that just gives no control of the board for my daughter. I know this cuz I'm an avid boarder and have been boarding for about 18 years. I called them and they apologized and offered refund or replace with correct bindings. Since I've already parked at East resort and took the bus to West side, I didn't want to really go back since I don't have a car at West side, so I decided to just rent a new board for my daughter that has the right size bindings. My daughter has a private instructor class with Mt High instructor with my friend and her son. To my surprise, the instructor says my daughters boots are not real snowboarding boots, just regular snow boots, and because they are so soft and not stiff like how snowboard boots are they can cause injury to my daughters ankle, so the instructor required my daughter to get new correct snowboard boots. So wow, wrong boots, wrong board size, and wrong bindings! All three incorrect! It was loss of precious private class time to exchange boots. So to be very blunt, if you look online, Snowboard boots cost way more than snow shoes as I was debating about buying or renting. Since they are such soft shoes, there's not much control, that's why they give you very short boards. So now it make sense to me why they did what they did. If you are serious about boarding, then look elsewhere for proper snowboard boots, correct size bindings, and correct size boards. It makes a huge difference. I own two boards, three snowboard boots myself, so diff length boards, diff stiffness of boots all make big difference. If it's not even real snowboard shoes, your child can really be injured. Hope the owners will consider upgrading their boots to real snowboard boots and follow professional guidelines. read more

I had just purchased a new snowboard, but didn't have boots to go along with them; I decided to give McGrath's a shot for boot rentals for my trip to Mountain High and was glad with the outcome. From the moment I walked in, I felt like walking into a friend's house, as I was warmly greeted and Tom was immediately cracking jokes. Their selection of gear is great and reasonably priced. Upon receiving a pair of boots, I tried them on and then checked if they fit with my board's bindings, but the bindings were too small. Instead of trying to convince me to spend on a rental, Tom offered to put standard sized bindings for a nominal fee; this was great as this fix guaranteed I would be able to fit on any snowboard boots in the future. Went Tuesday January 30, 2024. Gentleman asks me my boot size and I say 13. I have my own gear minus the board. He proceeds to give me arguably the smallest possible bindings for my boot size. The clips fell off 3 times because they barely fit my foot. I simply asked for my 25 dollars back as I basically already got screwed on the mountain of another 125 since I could not go on more than 2 runs, but mountain highs stupid policy of if you are there for an hour no refund is allowed. Thanksgiving day 2019. It was our first time snowboarding at Mountain High and the snow was out of control. My friends and I maneuvered through Lone Pine Canyon Rd upon hearing the 2 highway getting closed down. Before we reached Mountain High, I needed to rent some overalls, jacket, snowboard and goggles. We stopped by two stores (which were closed at 8am) and landed at McGrath's rentals! Tom genuinely greeted us and asked about our trip up the mountain. I specifically asked for the overalls because the regular rental pants don't protect me when I fall backwards down the mountain lol. Nobody likes snow melting into their butt haha. Anyways I got the all the gear needed for an amazing price. Tom took care of us with amazing service. After returning the rental equipment, I did not notice my wallet missing. I went home thinking it was in my personal jacket when it was actually left in the rental jacket at McGrath's !! They called me and went out of their way to personally return it to me a day later! I can't say enough to thank these people who work here. These guys are 100% professional and love their business. 110% recommend McGrath's if you go up to Mountain High! Very efficient and cheap for gear rental! Snowboard and boots for $28. Or, snowboard alone for $25, snowboard boots alone for $10, helmet $5. We also bought helmets here for $29.99 per some sign on the wall and they gave us 6 used helmets to pick from. Not sure what that's about but we aren't picky so we bought 2 lol. Another time we had a binding strap (on our own board) that was broken and it was 2 college aged kids working there that Wednesday night. They fixed it with a replacement strap for only $10 and probably 25 minutes of fiddling to get it attach securely. Really appreciate their patience and good attitude! No bathrooms here though, you have to use the portapotty. read more

This place is really underrated. I always went to Benny's because my friend had recommended it and they have stellar reviews. I got to Benny's this morning and there was a long line that wasn't moving. When you're trying to get up to the mountain, time is of the essence. I call up Mcgrath's because I remember seeing their big sign that says $15 dollar rentals. They said there's no line. We get there and the workers are very friendly and helpful. I can't speak for other people as it seems like prior Yelpers received poor equipment, but the boots and board I got was good quality and good condition. It was a K2 board and BOA lace boots. The 15 dollar sign is a little misleading because that's for skis only, the snowboard/boot combo was 23 FYI (which is the same price as Benny's). This is also cheaper than renting at Mountain High, which you should NEVER do under any circumstance. Crappy equipment, more expensive, but the biggest reason you shouldn't do it is that there's ALWAYS a super long line. Nothing worse than being ready to hit the slopes and then standing in line for an hour+ waiting to get a rental. Only 5 bucks for a snowboard hot wax! They don't do the edges though. Hot wax at Benny's was 20, though I'm not sure if that includes edge tuning. There aren't a lot of parking spaces (3 spaces right in front), but for some reason there was nobody at Mcgrath's so it was super easy both in the morning and when dropping off the equipment at night. It's also very easy to spot, it's literally right next to the gas station, so if you turn into the gas station you can get to their spots. If you're heading up the mountain it's on the left side, and on the right side when you're heading down. (opposite side of the street from Benny's). Like I said earlier, the workers were great, super friendly and helpful, especially the dudes who were there when we dropped off the board. Even opened the door for me when he saw me walking in. I GUESS if I had to compare, you could say the people at Benny's feel like they're REALLY trying to make you feel like family, like you just stepped into Olive Garden or something. Not that the people at Mcgrath's weren't awesome, but I think that's a big reason why people on Yelp seem to love Benny's so much. All in all, I still think Benny's is great, but they get so much business now (probably because of all the Yelpers) that it's packed day and night. The last two times I went to Benny's we waited a pretty long time. They're not slow, but there's just so many people. And that Benny's parking lot can feel a little dicey because it's so narrow. If you find yourself waiting in line, it's definitely worth it to give Mcgrath's a chance. read more
