Located right across the street from the Adams family homes, Mckay's was pretty crowded at lunch time! I had the spinach and feta omelette, and it tasted great, though it was stuffed with spinach that overpowered everything. Once some of it had been pushed to the side, the flavor of the omelette was good and the feta could shine through. The potatoes were a good addition, though would've been better if they had a bit of a crisp. Toast was fine and went well with the various jams available. We ended up at Mc Kay's after our first choice for lunch told us we'd have a 45 minute wait. We decided that even if a table had been immediately available, the waaay too loud music would make it impossible to converse easily with our niece who was in town for business. When asked, a waitress in that first place suggested McKay's - and it was the perfect choice for us. (No photos during a family visit though.) McKay's is on the corner of a busy street, but we easily found parking on the side street along the side of the building. Outside, it looks pretty unassuming here & it was hard to tell how much space there is inside: three separate rooms of tables, so we quickly found a nice quiet spot to settle in for a good chat. The menu had all that we were looking for, both "breakfast" and lunch items all were tempting. I went the breakfast route and got a big, full, tasty omelet that actually had great flavor and held together nicely instead of unwrapping as I cut it (a pet peeve of mine). The home fries were good and had that Goldilocks amount of salt, not too much & not too little. What a pleasant surprise to have Irish soda bread as an option too; it was super delicious toasted! Pancakes and waffles were also really satisfying, with a nice amount of blueberries in the pancakes. The coffee was decent not great, more diner quality than coffee shop, exactly as expected. My cup was never allowed to get too cold or too empty though. All in all, we got just what we'd been looking for, and at a great price, with no pressure to eat and leave. Usually I get good service but last week I had a somewhat unpleasant confrontation with a waitress who was new to me. She later identified herself as a manager. This woman yelled at me because I had not walker right in and sat myself down. I tried to explain that I usually waited to be guided in but she would have none of it. Her face was red and she was very curt. I ended up going to eat at a different place. I would discourage any immigrant or person of color to go there. There is an overwhelmingly strong chemical/cleaner/cat litter smell that hits you as soon as you walk inside. It seems to get stronger as you walk through the restaurant, making it hard to enjoy your meal. The horrible scent lingers on your clothing for the entire day after leaving. The food itself is decent but I would not return due to the strong odors. I thought maybe it was a one off occurrence but it happened both times I went at different times in the day. I would advise them to try a different cleaner, stop burning so many candles to mask it, and try to air out that horrible smell. I can't imagine how people with sensitivities eat inside here. If you are looking for an authentic Irish local neighborhood diner, Mckay's is for you. This place gets five stars for its no-nonsense ambiance and good old-fashioned actual *service*. I was greeted instantly and matter-of-factly by one of the head servers who got me to a table immediately. Everyone in the place seemed to know each other and/or were regulars. My waitress was outstanding. I don't even know the last time I had such proactive and attentive *service*. She must have been constantly surveying the room because when I pulled out my daily vitamins she popped over to ask if I needed some water. I had bought a small bottle of orange juice at my hotel before leaving for breakfast. When I pulled it out of my purse to finish it off she asked if I wanted a glass with ice. And she always seemed to come by just as my coffee cup was about empty to ask if I was ready for a refill. They honestly don't make 'em like this anymore. With the new and outrageous tip culture where I'm asked for a tip as I am rung up at the register just for placing an order, where I have to pick up the food myself and bus my own table if I want to sit down, Mckay's reminds us why tipping was invented in the first place. I don't want to do this. McKays has been a lovely breakfast spot and the waitresses are so sweet. But this is too much. Last fall I ordered takeout and saw a distinct mouse turd in my food. I am well aware of what mice feces look like, but I tried to let it go, thinking I couldn't possibly be right. I was wrong. Today my husband brought me to McKays for Mother's Day. In the second room, the room next to the bar, there's the overwhelming smell of mouse ammonia. Sure enough, mice started coming out from behind the booth in the dining room, running along the walls. It lasted the duration of our visit and we all saw, my 5 year old took photos. What's most upsetting to me is that it confirms that it WAS mouse feces in my food last fall, and it's still obviously an ongoing problem for them. The best corned beef hash I've ever had!! Granted I haven't had that many and this was the first time in Boston, but it was soooo good and had an authentic feeling. Definitely would recommend the corned beef! As a bonus the toasted english muffin on the side was buttery and delightful. The eggs were cooked just as ordered and the portions were large. I especially liked the Irish bacon and the sausages on the Irish breakfast. The black pudding and white pudding were fun to try and went well with the potatoes and meats. When I was quite little, my family would sometimes go to Bickford's for breakfast. That restaurant has since closed, and I don't know if other Bickford's I see are related. In either case, on wherever we went, I would always get the same thing off the kids menu: pigs in a blanket. A coworker told me about McKay's, and I'm always down for breakfast because, quite frankly I never know what to make. When I looked at the menu beforehand (because I'm like that), I knew right away what I was getting. When they brought it over, the smell alone brought me back to the days of yore. The pancakes were large and very fluffy. Also not too sweet, which I liked, as you're probably going to drizzle or pour out the maple syrup. The sausage links were pretty standard, not much to say there. My "gripe" is one of balance. When you have a kiddie size, the pancakes are much smaller, and every bite has both. In these, the pancakes grew, but the sausage not so much. Half of the plate ended up just being rolled pancakes. Pigs in considerably oversized blankets, perhaps? The plate was very filling, so I have mixed feelings about what to do. Especially considering spots like McKay's have regulars who've been coming for decades, and humans are not the best when it comes to change. If I am to offer a suggestion, it would be this: have large sausages in pancakes, but only have two of them. To make up for the lost pancake, offer a small side (like some potatoes). I'm such a brunch girl. I went here on a Saturday with my prayer group. The service and servers were amazing from start to finish. I wish I was as impressed by the food. It was nothing to brag about. The home fries were tasteless as was the veggie omelette sans the broccoli and add bacon. Yes, I added bacon to a veggie omelette . The omelette was FLAVORLESS. I have celiac disease. Breakfast is usually so easy (eggs and potatoes in a separate pan)! I told the waitress I have an allergy that is severe and I can't have toast. She offered my toast to someone else in my party I clarified that I have allergy-after already saying this but I just wanted to be sure. She brings out the food and of course there is toast on my plate, touching the other parts of my breakfast. She gets upset with me when she overhears someone in my party say "I'm sorry you can't eat that". She comes over and starts telling me I should have told her I had an allergy and it's not her fault I never said anything. I didn't say anything but she took my plate (I said it was fine) and said her boss would be mad at her. She came back actually 2 seconds later saying they remade my food (literally not one minute passed so I don't quite believe this) and that her boss was mad bc it was so busy. After I said thank you (didn't eat my food because I knew it wasn't safe) she told me I should try 110 grille- she used to work there and understands allergies??? For the most part it's a good dining experience. The staff is friendly and work hard to stay engaged with you in terms making sure that you're food is served and that you like it. The one caveat is that their potatoes (French fries or home fries) are always woefully undercooked!!! And it's gotten to the point that I won't order them anymore. I love Mckay's; pure and simple. I'm a New York transplant and they just have good food, solid food. We've only gone for breakfast and brunch, but they deliver every time. They give you a ton of food for a great price. The people who work there are super nice, work super hard, and I've seen the same faces every time I've gone in for the last 8 months. Definitely do the waffles because they are huge, fluffy, and smell of vanilla. Do the chocolate chip pancakes because they are massive, soft, and filled with chocolate chips. The Irish breakfast is clutch. The place is not fancy, the inside has some "character", and if you ask for anything besides milk or cream, you might get a "this is a mom and pop restaurant, sorry". But that's the best part of this place; it knows what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. The only reason it didn't get five stars is because it would just show favoritism on my part. McKays is a nice breakfast place in Quincy. My daughters and I went this morning (Saturday) and it was busy. The wait wasn't bad....10 minutes or so. The place is deceivingly large encompassing three storefronts. Waitstaff was very friendly getting us beverages and taking our order. It was 10 plus minutes or so before we saw our food. I don't want to say it took long but it wasn't "lightning fast" as other yelpers have stated. I ordered the eggs Benedict with home fries and side of corned beef hash. Benedict was good. The home fries were to be honest boiled potatoes with paprika. No flavor, not put on a gill for any period of time. Basically tasteless. The hash was ok. My friends and I were looking for a brunch spot in Quincy and this is how we found McKays. Right away this place looks like a town favorite where people probably come every week. It's got that diner feel to it where the majority of people are regulars, meaning they must be coming back for a good reason. Parking was found very easily along the street. We arrived at 11am on a Sunday, so prime brunch time. This place was huge. I was expecting a few tables, but the restaurant expanded over 4-5 rooms and we were sat right away. One negative to this place is that it took over 1 hour to get 4 breakfast dishes. 3 of us got eggs, breakfast potatoes, bread, all the usual and 1 of us got waffles. Im going to say that it was probably slow because of being under staffed, which is not a problem since enjoyed each other's company. However if you're looking for something quick, maybe pass on this location during prime time. For food, I got 2 eggs poached with breakfast potatoes, griddled English muffin & bacon. The portion was freaking massive. I was stuffed and couldn't finish it all. The eggs were poached beautifully. Sometimes it can be hard to get them right especially when busy. I do wish they came in a bowl on the side rather than served on the English muffin which made it soggy. The homefries were also very mushy, but had great flavor. Not a crispy potato. The bacon was crispy which I love! Overall, a solid breakfast. If I was in the area, I'd come back here. I spent about $15 with tip I believe. read more

OK, let's get one thing out of the way right now. McKay's Breakfast and Lunch isn't the kind of place you come to if you want a hipster-approved brunch of deconstructed avocado toast with a microgreen and foraged-enoki-mushroom omelet. McKay's is the kind of place you come to when you want to give your arteries a workout. Since my cholesterol level was looking so good, I decided to ruin it by ordering the full Irish breakfast. And I mean the FULL Irish breakfast - two eggs, bangers, Irish bacon, white pudding, black pudding, beans, home fries, a grilled tomato and buttered toast (I opted for whole wheat - I mean I AM trying to be health-conscious). I was quite impressed for several reasons. First, despite the fact that there was enough saturated fat here to fulfill your weekly dietary needs, the meats weren't overly greasy. The sausages were cooked very well - they had a good flavor and a nice "snap" when I bit into them. The fact that there was both white and black pudding was a real treat. They were both tasty, but I preferred the white, since it was a little less dense than the black version. Neither the black nor white was dry, though, which was very nice. Irish bacon is sliced differently than the stuff you'd get with a Grand Slam, and this bacon was on the chewy side, which is how I like it, but if you prefer crispy bacon beware. I was also impressed by the beans - they were sweet, but not too sweet, and were a nice foil to the salty meats and eggs. It's easy to botch the beans with a breakfast like this, so I was pleased that these weren't just a "throwaway" addition. Someone gave them some thought. My eggs were done well, fried hard the way I asked them to be, but this is a breakfast joint, so I'd expect that much. I only have one complaint with the entire meal. The home fries were really, really salty. I mean, I ordered the Irish breakfast, so clearly I'm not concerned about consuming too much sodium. And even I thought they were salty. I mean, I still ate them of course. . .once you've gone 3/4 of the way through a full Irish breakfast, you need to finish strong, but they definitely could have done with a lot less salt. Overall, though, an exceptional breakfast. McKay's is clearly far more than a run-of-the-mill diner. Also, it is worth nothing that all of that food pictured (I could barely move after I finished it) only set me back $12.95. Ya'll can keep your hipster avocado toast, I know how I'm spending my money. read more
