My complaint is with the Owner Ken, this person is a money hungry shark, that only cares about making a profit at the expense of the grief of my family. This Ken guy was disrespecting my family, when he was expecting us to accept all his proposed services. Ken made rude and disrespectful remarks when services he offered were not needed and accepted. The way he treated us, make us feel like he is in the wrong business. He needs to be educated in the treatment of grieving families. He is all about making money, without regard to the way he talks to his customers. He is only an embalmer , but he needs to get training in treating grieving families, or look for a job as a truck driver, they make a lot of money without needing to deal with grieving people. read more

I recently had to arrange services for my mother. Fortunately, my mom had already decided on cremation. I met with Ken several years ago and we selected an urn that was water soluble because my mom wanted her ashes to be in the ocean. A few months ago, my mom passed away. Ken called me and to set an appointment to go over the details. He was very kind and compassionate as was Sandy. I decided to arrange for a burial at sea and am still so happy about how everything turned out. The Priest was very kind and so were the captain of the boat. It is always a shock to have a loved one pass away, in addition to the immense sadness and grief, you immediately have to begin the event planning process and make a lot of decisions. Those decisions were made easier by the thoughtful staff at McKenzie Mortuary. In the end all of the services and coffin cost more than I expected because there are always other little fees to consider so I recommend you plan your budget with $500-$1000 of wiggle room. I never thought I'd give a Yelp review for mortuary services, but after the passing of my father, I was looking for a cost on direct cremation. I spoke with Ken over the phone and he gave me a cost almost $1,000 less than the next closest mortuary in Long Beach. Because of the price difference, I called again to question the final-final cost. Ken said the only extra charge would be for any additional death certificates we required. My mother and I made an appointment to review our options. We met with Ken and his staff and they were professional and compassionate. At the final meeting, Matt was just as kind. After my fathers passing in Florida in 2015 he was cremated. His ashes were distributed amongst his 3 children of which I am one. I recently decided after portioning his cremains for encasement in a DIY urn I'd spent a lot of reflective time making there was still a good amount of Daddy. So, in what other way could I honor him? It was simple, I'd send them onto The U.S. Navy in San Diego in order that the last of his cremains be scattered at sea. An honor worthy of a Navy veteran. After researching the Navy's requirements, I realized I needed a biodegradable bag to hold my fathers ashes. Called local Target, even Marine goods store and believe me, they're not that easy to buy off the shelf. I then called 2 other mortuaries to inquire about getting a bag. One said he'd call me back (never did), and the other never returned the voicemail I left. Shame on them both! Being a time sensitive issue I returned to Yelp and found McKenzie's. One call is all it took and from the first gal who answered the phone and who's name I unfortunately didn't get to Kelsa who ultimately told me yes, they would provide me a bag I extend my gratitude. That was very kind, and enough to make my day, but Kelsa even said no charge! This has been a difficult 2 years but the compassion shown by this business and staff made this last step of "setting" Daddy free for me a bit easier. Thank you. P.S. We had a service last month at Mckenzie and we are beyond grateful for everything they have done for my family. They handled everything that needed to be done for our service. They rarely contacted us because it was a very sensitive time. They were in contact with the florist, restaurant and whoever was in charge of our expenses. They only contacted us for pictures and who was going to speak. We practically didn't do anything. And we believe that's how it should be because at that time nobody wants to deal with a beloved family members service. I can't say enough good about McKenzie Mortuary, and how much they helped me get everything taken care of when my Father passed. Both of my parents have been disabled and unfortunately have gone through practically all of their savings with medical issues and cost of care. We didn't have much to work with to pay for my dad's services but Ken went above and beyond to keep everything within budget, yet everything was classy and beautiful. Ken thought of EVERYTHING - I literally didn't have to worry about anything cause Ken and his staff took care of it all. I'm not the most technically savvy person but wanted to do a DVD for my dad's memorial myself. I thought I'd done it correctly but it turned out it was in the wrong format. I didn't even get it to McKenzie till the evening before my dad's service and Ken literally found a way to get the DVD fixed and it looked even better than what I had done - the night BEFORE my dad's service!!! Ken is a miracle worker. The father/minister that came for my dad's service was absolutely wonderful. I spoke with him briefly about my dad the night before, and it's like Father Brian had known my dad all his life. The military was even able to come to the service to perform the flag ceremony and give the flag to my mom (who is wheelchair bound and cannot go to the cemetery). McKenzie Mortuary was beyond helpful in helping me get everything taken care of, the staff is very professional and compassionate, and Ken is an absolute gem.
