Been meaning to review them for a couple years now. In 2010, I wrote a one-star review for ACA Automotive down in Long Beach after they jerked us around during a routine smog check, wanting over $400 in unneeded part replacements, and I mentioned going to another mechanic with whom I was much happier. McMillen's was the place. And I hope this review helps since multiple people who've gotten the same treatment at ACA and saw my review have asked where I went, later writing their thanks for the recommendation. After effectively flushing away money at ACA, we first called up Herb & Red's (the trustworthy go-to of several of our friends) over on 7th. They were backed up, but recommended McMillen & Son. For less than a fifth of what ACA was trying to gouge us for, McMillen's made the tiny repair that was necessary, got the car smogged and passed, and explained the numbers on all the documentation. An honest mechanic is priceless. read more

Our 2005 Honda Civic started "chattering" in first gear in November 2011. Now the interesting thing about the problem is that it gets much much worse after the car is heated up. The longer you drive, the worse it gets. It is also near undrivable trying to shift into first gear going up a steep hill. We assumed it was a clutch problem so we took it to McMillen's in early December. I drove McMillen around to demonstrate the problem and he told me it was definitely a clutch problem He said he would need to replace the clutch. So he replaced the clutch, we paid him 550 dollars and drove away. A week and a half later the same problem starts happening again. So we take it back to him. He takes a look at it and says that it wasn't adjusted properly when he installed it (I don't know what this means). He makes the adjustments and we take it home. Next day, same problem. I call him to tell him and suddenly, he decides it isn't a clutch problem (then why did we spend 550 dollars to replace it?), so we take it to Herb and Red's. Herb and Red do their thing (for free I might add) and determine that it is definitely a clutch problem. They do note that one of the engine mounts is lose which makes the "chattering" louder but that is definitely not causing the problem. They call McMillen to tell him this and then they even waited for us to pick up our car passed closing because we get off work so late. Herb and Red are the best. So back to McMillen. A day after dropping off the car he calls me and tells me several things. First, he thinks the engine mount is the cause of the problem so he fixed that. Second, he called other clutch places. One of them told him that clutches need to be broken in. All of the other places said that was crap and he agreed. He also said that some of the places attributed it to driver error, meaning that we weren't driving the stick correctly. I told himI learned on a stick when I was 15 and have been driving one ever since. I also reminded him that Herb and Red had the same problem when they test drove it. Were they driving it wrong too? He seemed satisfied with this. So I picked up the car after he fixed the mounts. Next day, same problem. We called a Honda dealership mechanic and he said it was definitely a clutch problem. He said it sounded like McMillen only replaced some of the clutch. He said that this problem is caused by "hot spots" on the fly wheel which develop over long periods of use. I sent this information to McMillan who replied, "Well, we DIDN'T replace the flywheel, but that wouldn't cause this problem." So we dropped off the car again. He calls me later and is extremely defensive. Now he is saying that he did replace the flywheel. What's more he is now saying that the clutch is broken because we didn't break it in properly. Finally, he says that we weren't driving it correctly. It was a complete reversal of everything he had said. He very reluctantly agreed to replace the flywheel "again, just in case," which sounded pretty fishy to me. He calls me the next day and again is super defensive. He says when he pulled out the flywheel that he claimed to have just replaced that there were hot spots. Strange how that was exactly what the dealer said the problem was. He says that the hot spots on the brand new flywheel (he kept emphasizing its newness) were the result of our driving it incorrectly. Now keep in mind, that it took 150,000 miles for the hot spots to develop on our "old" flywheel. He expect me to believe that worse hot spots developed on the "new" flywheel in a week and a half? Anyway, he replaced the flywheel and I told him I would be in right around 5 to pick it up. Now, keep in mind that it is now the middle of February. Our car has been in and out of his shop for two months and this involved at least 6 trips to drop it off. Because he does not open until 8:15 and closes at 5 that means that I was two hours late to work to drop it off and I had to leave 2 hours early to pick it up (I work in downtown LA.) So when I told him I would be there around 5 he says, "Well I'm not waiting a minute passed 5, I'm tired and I want to go home." I said, "I can't miss anymore work, can you please wait or have your son wait." He said absolutely not but he would leave the key in the car and park it on the street so we could pick it up. After all of our patience, I thought this was rude. With the brand new flywheel the car drives perfectly. My guess is that he actually didn't replace it the first time and got defensive when he realized he got caught. I'm not saying he did this on purpose. He gets 2 stars for not charging us for the additional work, which I wouldn't have paid for anyway. read more

At the suggestion on Jim @ Herb and Red's I called Mike to see if he can check my old car out. I was concerned about the car not being able to get there. Calling Mike a few times he was very concerned and gave me a couple of suggestions. After figuring out a solution, I get there and find that they are all ready waiting for me. I get off the car, pop open the engine and they get right to work checking to see what the heck is going on. I think it took them like 2 minutes to figure out what was going on. They started calling to see how much the part was going to be and that was that. "We have to replace a part that connects the spark plugs because this one is cracked. Ok it's going to be like 30-45 minutes once the part gets here." Really? That's it? No engine overhaul needed? It sure sounded like it needed one. My friend who went w/ me and I take off to get something to eat. Half hour later I get a call and told the car is ready. This was amazing! Usually car repairs have taken half a day at other places I've been to. We get there and my car is up and running. Mike explained what was going on, showed me the part that was replaced and then explains the breakdown of the bill. I was so ready to hear the total of over $200 but nope it was just $120 and $80 went towards the part! Seriously people I thing this place is great. I'm so glad that I went here and although I recently bought a new car that came w/ 3 years free maintenance. I will still let everyone know about them to get them some business. This is my first review and I am honored to give it. I actually found out about McMillen's Garage via Yelp (THANKS GUYS!) and decided to check em out myself. I went right at the start of the business day and was still in for a bit of a wait. They draw a lot of business, so what do you expect? I was prepared. Brought a book to read and camped out at the Mickey D's nearby. I got to speak to the owner himself. Nice guy. HONEST guy. I brought my car from out of state where there are no smogging requirements so I asked how much it would cost to replace a part that might cause my car to fail inspection. The moment of truth: At this point, he could have taken the high road, which he did, or he could have told me how much it would cost to repair that part and taken me for all I was worth but he didn't. Later I got a call telling me how much the job cost and offered to have my car driven to the smog place and tested. I'm sorry...valet smog check? Can we get a 10-star rating option please? My car indeed did pass smog and is now ready for registration and she sounds beautiful too just like when she was new. I only spent a couple hundred on my total bill. I'm happy. read more

Let's face it. No one likes having car troubles, especially when you don't know much about cars. If you're like me, you call around looking for a "good deal" hoping you don't get screwed over. I'm so glad I found McMillen. I spoke to the owner, Mike (Sr.) on the phone and, like other places I called, he was able to provide an estimate. Unlike others I called, he was friendly, conversational and informative. His customer service and love of his business was clear. When I arrived, they looked at my car (bad battery) and began the search for a replacement battery. I headed down the street for some breakfast while they worked. Within about 10 minutes, I received a call from them telling me they had a battery onsite they could use. By the time I finished breakfast and walked back, my car was done! They double checked to make sure everything was working properly. Earlier, they mentioned the alternator may need repair, but after further investigation, that wasn't the case. I appreciated them not charging me for unnecessary work. Lastly, they checked my oil to make sure that was okay and it was. Before I left, I briefly spoke with the owner who is in his 70's and has been working on cars for 45 years! He shared a few personal stories and showed me some photos in his shop. I felt like I had taken my car to a family member's garage! I never felt haggled or hassled. I ended up getting exactly what I wanted and needed for a great price! The owner said after getting 50 reviews on Yelp!, he would stop being "nice." Well, after meeting this man, his son and grandson (who all work there), something tells me he's not going to stop being nice anytime soon! read more

These guys shoot you straight. After a rather unsatisfactory visit to another mechanic for a $50 smog test, which devolved into them trying to squeeze pennies out of me for unnecessary repairs amounting to $500 after failing my car and keeping the money, I got on Yelp and discovered their less than sparkling reviews. With Yelp's further assistance I found these guys, McMillen's. They made the one little repair that was needed to pass smog before taking it to another place where those people had it smogged and it passed. The whole affair cost $80 ($35 for the repair, the rest for the smog test + $5 tip). McMillen's is a good, honest business that deserves all the stars you can give them. read more

The scheduled milage for a timing belt change is every 90k miles on newer model cars, mine had 156k on the clock so I figured I should make my way to the mechanic. Herb and Reds Auto comes highly recommended from my fellow Yelpers so I called them up for the job. The guy who answered straight up said "were too busy, it will take us too long to get to that. Call Mike McMillen they can take care of you no problem". So I call these McMillen guys up for an estimate and he's doing the math for the quote over the phone. I know a fair amount about cars and can always tell when I'm getting taken through the ringer. Definately NOT the case here. He's telling me that there is no extra labor to swap out the water pump and thermostat while doing the timing belt, cha ching! major points in my book already. This guys quote was HALF the price of other shops around town. I actually felt like I was ripping him off! The shop is easy to miss, tucked away between a church and Taco place. It's a father and son run joint...no pimple faced punk kids from Pep Boys around here. Mike Sr and Jr are extremely knowlegable and trustworthy. The guy even waited around a half hour after closing time so I could pick up my truck while I was stuck in so-cal rain traffic! Its taken me 6 years of living in Long Beach to find a good mechanic, but I finally found one. I'd like to keep the secret to myself, but this guy is too awesome to keep under wraps. read more

This place was recommended to me by my mechanic (see the review of Jim from Herb & Reds in Long Beach) to replace the clutch on my 1999 Nissan Sentra with 156K miles. The shop can easily be missed as the shop is set back from the street to allow cars to park and pull in front. It's in between a donut shop and a motel. Jim had already spoken to Mike, so he was expecting me and knew about my car. I got an awesome price, $100-200 less than what several other transmission places I called wanted to charge. Dropped my car off on Monday evening, picked it up on Wednesday afternoon. Nothing like driving a car with a new clutch, especially with how stiff mine had become. Even Mike had joked that my left leg must be humongous compared to my right! I didn't give them full stars because after replacing my clutch, one of the mechanics forgot to fully attach the air pressure sensor, which turned my check engine light on and had me jerking and car turning on and off in my attempt to get to school. When a previous mechanic suggested that my '98 Subaru Forester was done for unless I replaced the engine for nearly $3K, I knew that I had to get a second opinion... The car was simply too old for me to sink that type of money into keeping her running. For a second opinion, I took my car to Herb and Red's. Jim generously took my car in for a thorough diagnostic and concluded that I needed to get my head gaskets replaced. Herb and Red's didn't do that type of work at their garage, but suggested McMillen's garage as the place to get quality work done. Not only did Mike McMillen and his son get my car fixed in a timely fashion, they explained the work they were going to do in detail, but plain language. I felt informed and in the loop. That's great customer service! Furthermore, I rolled off with new head gaskets AND a new front axle for less than half of what was initially quoted to me. McMillen's Garage = quality craftsmanship + affordability + honesty TOP NOTCH mechanic. I will now do the 10 mile commute from Long Beach to Bellflower for any other auto work. There is a reason this place has 5 stars - self explanatory. Honest, Efficient, Friendly, Affordable, Diligent, Helpful and Trustworthy. I have been through a total of 5 different mechanics within the past 2 years, whom I never could settle for. They were either rude, expensive, or would cause more damage than what I would bring the car in for. McMillen's Garage is a genuine gem, a diamond in the ruff. Mike, the owner, and his son are a pleasure to deal with. I have never felt so relieved, glad, and thankful to have found such an amazing mechanic. I am now and shall ever be faithful to these men. I took the car to another mechanic for a checkup (which costs $35). They told me that my leak was coming from my high pressure hose and that my rack & pinion was leaking. They estimated me a total of $1,200+ to fix. I called Mike McMillen's and asked for an estimate for the same problems and was given an estimate of roughly $400. I took it to Mike's right away for a checkup! They called me within a couple of hours and I found out that the Rack & Pinion did NOT have a leak but instead, the o-ring was leaking so bad that it had leaked toward the driver seat...Can you imagine if I were to pay over $1,000 for a new Rack & Pinion that was never leaking to begin with? Yeah, me either. So far they have fixed my high pressure hose leak, 2 o-ring breaks/leaks, steering wheel belt, and the power steering grinding noise all under $300 for a 97' Honda Prelude. read more

Pinch me! Finally found an honest mechanic. I was looking to buy a used Infinity SUV. I knew it had some issues so I took it to McMillen because of the Yelp reviews. All the good I read was true. So many opportunities to charge me all the money - like most repair shops would. Mike make every effort to save me money and has great referrals to specialty shops if it was an issue that is not his specialty. No frills shop means low overhead. Love it. I'm quite pleased with this place and Mike is such a great guy. What they say about this place is true. Mike is a genuine guy that has been at this location for 40 years. I needed a new alternator for my Saab. Saab's are not easy cars to work on unfortunately. I know this is a complicated thing for my vehicle, but Mike took care of it and was very helpful throughout the process to help me get the best price.They also gave me a 1-year guarantee, which put me at ease. He got the job done in practically one day and answered all my annoying questions patiently. Although the garage is a little older looking, don't be discouraged, these guys know what they are doing and if they can't do it; they will refer to someone who can which is the best part! My car overheated on the freeway and the temperature was 275° I was afraid there was going to be terrible damage to it. Mike explained to me that NASCAR's temperatures only get to 250°. I took it there they fixed my broken radiator and didn't find any other damage. I'm sure a lot of places would've tried to find something else wrong so they could price gouge me but I feel like McMillen's was extremely honest and their pricing was fair. Well I have been coming here for years. My mom has been coming here for even longer with everything from an old Dodge Aries (yuck) to an old BMW we used to own. She even brings her precious Mustangs here when they need work. I have been coming here since I bought my first car. I try to do what I can, but when the job gets over my head Mike and his son have always been there to help diagnose and take care of the problem. They have always been incredibly friendly and the prices for their work have always been more than fair for anything I've had them do. I've brought my share of heaps there (from my 69 Cougar, to another Cougar, a Mustang most recently and even a Ford wagon I had that caught fire at work... no lie.) and they have never had any problems working with any of them. As was said in another review, you won't find a waiting room with Oprah on and a Starbucks coffee on the premises. You will find some of the most honest mechanics here in the LA/Long Beach area. It's all part of the old school charm, right down to the guard dog that keeps watch of the place at night. Service is the top priority here. These guys work and think as if they were born in engines! They get to work diagnosing your car as you tell them the symptoms, and go to work immediately to get you rolling smoothly as quickly as possible. I had my car towed there because it wouldn't start. I had the starter replaced. When I arrived to pick it up Mike told me, "It sure is shifting early. Has it been doing that?" I said, "Yes, another shop told me I needed my transmission rebuilt, so I'm just saving up a bit to have that done; since it's gonna be around $1,500." He said, "Nah, let me show you what it was. This lil part here was loose. I fixed it, and it's shifting smoothly now." Feel like I'm driving a whole new car, and I saved $1,500!! I recommend this shop to everyone who needs any kind of service done on their car. This is an honest shop. How many other shops can you say that about? read more

Again, I fully recommend this place thanks to the great service I got today. I had a coolant leak steaming out from underneath my exhaust manifold cover (you can recognize that godawful smell anywhere), so I got towed out there this morning before they opened up. I talked to Mike Sr. shortly after he opened up and he told me he'd get on the case immediately. I figured it would take a few hours since I'm used to places like the Mazda specialist or Pep Boys taking forever and a half. So I walked over to Norm's on Lakewood to pass the time while it got fixed. I BARELY FINISHED MY BREAKFAST WHEN I GOT THE CALL SAYING MY CAR WAS FIXED! Mike Sr. had done a pressure test to determine where the leak was, replaced the hose responsible and put everything back together in around an hour. Classy. $70 flat out-the-door. Both of the Mikes are really cool guys, and I'll definitely be back next time I need help. read more

Best mechanic around... he helped find the problem with my car in 3 hours, what took the dealer 3 weeks. ..and the dealer couldn't pin point the issue, they just said i needed a new engine for $8700, and that wasn't even for the whole thing. Just the core internals. Mike was able to diagnose that the #4 cylinder was misfiring badly. Turns out, the catalytic converter was clogged shut (which the dealer had previously checked, and charged for checking, and said it was fine )... the pressure from the supercharger forced the air back into the pistons and cracked one. All in all, he was able to fix the problem and got my car back on the road for $1500... he took his time and did the job right , i can't thank him enough. .. highly recommended! If you need an oil change or tire rotation, go some place else, these guys are best at serious problems that others charge your first born for... Thanks Mike! read more

I just love YELP and when my car was in dire need...it led me to McMillen's Garage. After being to 2 mechanics this day, who could not help me with my problem, I called McMillen's and explained my situation to Mike Sr. I told him that the codes were erased by the 1st mechanic, but he wrote them down on my invoice. Mike Sr. told me to read the codes to him. He had an idea of what it would be, but if I wanted to drive down to his shop, hopefully the check engine light would go on since the original problem still existed and he could look at my car to give me a better idea. I was stressed out!! My car was stalling the whole way there...but I managed to make it from Long Beach. I pull in and Mike Sr. approached my car and asked me to pop the hood, he reads the current codes and pretty much told me within 5 minutes what my main issue was - the EGR Valve. He wouldn't be able to work on it until Monday...but recommended another mechanic up the street that had the equipment to work on it today, and were open Saturdays too. He calls up Felix at Freddy's Carburetor (see review) and hooks me up. NO CHARGE, just a smile and a recommendation. Thanks so much Mike Sr., you saved this gal alot of stress, time, and $$$!!! My son's car had been sitting for a year while he was teaching English to kids in Korea. When he came home it wouldn't start. We had AAA come out and jump start it, but it would not rev at all. The car stalled after about 15 minutes and AAA came back with a tow truck. I called Herb and Reds who said they could look at it in about a week, but they recommended McMillen and Son on Alondra Blvd. in Bellflower. When we got there Mr. McMillen and his son looked at the car right away. They have a little place - no big waiting room with TV and magazines, no service manager with a computer. You get to talk directly to the mechanic! They figured out the battery was no good and did some preliminary tests. It was late afternoon on Friday and by Monday they had figured out that a fuse had to be replaced and had called Toyota for me to report the gas pedal sticking (even though it is an old model and not on the recall list.) Mr. McMillen is a very caring man. He was very patient and willing to explain everything he did to fix the car problem. He even talked to the AAA man to try and get them to honor my 3-year guarantee (AAA would not replace my 2-year old battery). In the end Mr. McMillen put a new battery in the car for a very reasonable price (much better than AAA!) Mr. McMillen sent us to a nearby smog test station,the car passed the smog test, and my son had his car by Tuesday afternoon. I would not hesitate to bring my car there again! Heres my 2 cents.. After having had my share of problems working with dealerships, I turned to the smaller, privately owned shops. I've been to a few different mechanics in the Long Beach area and while I don't particularly have any complaints about those, I was also never motivated to head back either. Dealing with the father and son tandem at McMillen's was seamless from start to finish. I brought them my Audi for a replacement timing belt and water pump and had the car completed the next day. I received periodic phone call updates as to what the progress was and they both also gave me realistic timetables of how long they expect the whole process to take. Another small touch I enjoyed was how Mike Jr. offered to show me the replaced part when I arrived to pay.. I appreaciated the insight and it felt reassuring to see exactly what was the root of the problem and to understand why it was being replaced. Although I hope not to be back (No more car problems!) -- I am confident that I will give my business to McMillen's if any problems should arise in the future.. Dennis read more

Asked him if he can check it out and we dropped it off and got a call back the next morning confirming my thoughts gave a very reasonable quote and proceeded to have them fix it.
