We've been using MD Plumbing since the early 2000s, and they have never let us down. From the condo we owned and now in the house we're renting, they have always responded to our calls and scheduled us ASAP. Their customer service is top-notch, and they always get the job done. Yesterday, I called Mark with an emergency request. I had two inches of sewer water in my basement from a drainage system that hadn't been maintained in the last few years. His crew showed up THAT AFTERNOON and rodded out the old catch basin in the backyard, which had been neglected for far too long. Filled with grease and roots. They also cleared the line to the street, which was loaded with tree roots, dryer lint, and baby wipes from a prior renter. (We do not use wipes. If you do, DO NOT flush them. Even if they claim on the package that they are the flushable kind. Wipes are bad news for your septic system.) These guys are pros. I have been using them for years because they always get the job done, no matter what it is, charge a fair price, are super respectful of my property, clean up after themselves, and are good people. In early February our indoor flood control system was starting to backed up and needed to be rodded out. I contacted several plumbers until I found the right one. The first plumber came and said it didn't need rodding. He poured several gallon of water in it along with some Pine Sol and charged us for his services. Less than two days later the same thing was happening. He could not do the job and refunded our funds. Another plumber wanted to remove the toilet in order to rod out the sewer. When I asked him if he was bonded/insured he said no. I don't have to tell you what happened there. However, the day before the non-bonded guy was to come to our home I called MD Plumbing & Sewer because I didn't get a good feeling from the other guy over the telephone. Upon calling MD Plumbing & Sewer, I spoke to Mark (the owner, I presumed) and after describing the problem he gave me a quote over the phone. I explained to him that I had a guy coming already, he said if you don't feel comfortable about him just tell him you want a second opinion. After the non-insured guy left our house I call Mark late Friday night after the other guy left our home. He asked me to contact the office Saturday morning after 10AM. I did, no answer however, before I could call them back the office called me. Kim was very nice and asked me what day did I need the service. I replied how soon can they get here. We made an appointment for Monday between noon & 1:00. I called after 1:00 because no one had arrived or called to say they were running behind. I thought they'd forgotten the appointment. Upon calling the office, I spoke to Kim, she apologized that no one had called me to say the guys we're running late. After she spoke to the workers she informed me that they should arrive within the hour. The workers, Gary & Tony arrived shortly before 2:00. They were done within 90 minutes. The workers cleaned up as best the could knowing that we were going to do a complete and thorough cleaning, sterilization and disinfectant once they departed. My husband stayed there with them, I couldn't take the smell. We are both very pleased with the work that was performed. We would highly recommend MD Plumbing & Sewer. However, the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 stars is the tardiness without notification. Otherwise, we are very happy to know that we have finally found a plumber we can trust. read more

We received a bait and switch. We called around to find a plumber, as our sewer system was backing up into the parking lot. THEY told US they could rod out the sewer for 400.00. They came out and insisted we pay them a check on the spot. Then the guy told us that what he accomplished was nothing, that we had to have our sewer system "sucked out" and that he couldn't do it and we had to call another plumbing company. So I asked what he accomplished, and he said basically nothing. My conversation with him was to ask, now that you have done this rodding, the sewer will work? and he said "no, it will back up to the parking lot just as before". "so what did you accomplish?" "We did what you asked us to do". Is this the type of plumber you want to hire? When we called the plumbing company, we were met with no response. Sometimes you're in a jam and need a competent plumber to help you through a small disaster. Someone that knows about plumbing needs, sump pumps or sewers and you kinda need'em in a heartbeat. It's in that moment that going with the wrong contractor or GC (general contractor) can cost you an arm and a leg. Calling any valid contractor (that is established and insured) outside normal business hours, ie after-hours can lead to extravagant costs. I mention this because it's something, I as a property manager & neighbor have dealt with. (After hours or emergency service can sometimes be an additional cost on top of their repair costs. Some charge flat fees and others a percentage.) (I would NOT, nor should you, pay any uninsured contractor any emergency monies in the same case. If someone is uninsured and working anything on your property, their errors are now yours.) In regards to MD plumbing, they offer affordable pricing and haven't yet gouged me in any a circumstance. So in my book I give'em high regard. I have gone with them a handful of times over the years. I like their casual approach with regards to customers. It's on a friendly and helpful level. We've used MD plumbing a number of minor issues, ranging from repairing a frozen pipe, replacing a spigot, fixing a leaking toilet, routing a sewer drain and leak detection at a shower pan. They've been reliable and on time every time so far. The frozen pipe was an emergency, as it was a radiator heat line and we were losing heat fast.. risking further pipe freezes. I am very happy with MD plumbing and sewer today! When I called a few days ago they were very professional and scheduled me in quickly. Mark called ahead to let me know he was on the way. Since moving into another old house neither outdoor water supplys worked correctly. One leaking into our laundry room and the other just trickling water. Quick Summary: Paid over $350 for having nothing accomplished except for the cause being determined. Detailed Summary: We called them for a clogged shower drain which turned out to be caused by ice - presumably in a trap somewhere. They sent 2 guys over who tried to get the ice to thaw over a 2-hour period. After their "traditional" methods failed, they suggested we make holes in our wall to thaw the pipe - which we respectfully denied (we have other showers so this seemed like complete overkill). They ended their visit with charging us $350 and stating that "with patience and luck ice should melt". I don't know about you, but when I call a plumber then I'm really hoping they can resort to more than just "luck". Of course I understand that we're being charged something, but $350 seems steep for zero progress. I was able to thaw the ice myself using equipment I purchased at a local hardware store for less than $25 in less than an hour - and I'm not a plumber. I contacted them to ask for a partial refund (I wasn't there when the work was done) and was promised a call back that never came - hence this review. It's now been over 2 weeks and I haven't heard from them which tells me everything I need to know about this business. We won't be using them again in the future. read more

Update 11/11/17 woke up to the ejector pump going crazy and found a very flooded basement. No clue where the water was coming from but thought the ejector pump needed replacing. Called MD and cried about my emergency. Three hours or less later 2 plumbers were here to assess damages . In the meantime a neighbor told us a hose connection in the side yard was gushing water. Mark took time out of his family Saturday to stop by and see if everything had been taken care of AND called later that day to make some suggestions about getting the water out and dehumidifying basement. read more

I think 4.5 would be fair but I'm going to round up. These guys replaced my water heater and fixed some screwups that the original installers did. This changed the cost which I would have appreciated knowing prior, but Marc was great about talking me through it and he met me in the middle on price. He was professional and pleasant, and the guys in the house left my place clean. I called them again this week for a faucet installation. I had bought the replacement and another company wanted to charge me $550 (!!!) to install it. MD Plumbing came out within a few days (my old one was still functional) and installed it in a half hour for $125. $425 saved and Kim at the office was great the whole time and the plumbers who did the work were nice and professional. Do not hire MD Plumbing to install a pedestal sink. Marc and his employees have proven themselves to be complete incompetents at this task. His employee, Greg first attempted the installation without using a leveling tool. This resulted in a sink basin that was obviously not level. Greg and the other employee, Chris try to convince me that this was due to the imperfections of the sink surface. On the second installation, Marc attempted to ensure the sink was level, but he did not remove the pedestal (that Greg caulked to the floor) and therefore failed to center the pedestal under the sink basin. I've emailed Marc asking for a refund of this incompetent installation and he has been non-responsive. MD Plumbing cuts corners and is deceptive. I'm a Realtor, and in certain circumstances my clients need to get an estimate quickly to keep contract terms or in order to make a decision to move forward on purchasing a home. My clients decided to us MD because they were local in Skokie where the home they were looking to buy was located. They could potentially offer information on sewers or certain blocks which had past flooding issues. The owner Mark seemed professional when my client set up the appointment. My client could not make the appointment, so I stepped in to meet The plumbers who were going to scope the sewers and estimate changing out galvanized pipe to copper. I received a phone call 5 minutes after our scheduled appointment that they would be 15 minutes late. Don't call me after you are late, I already know you are late. If you are telling me how late you will be, don't lie to me. Finally an hour after our scheduled appointment they showed up. No second call, no apology from the workers when they got there. Not good. They scoped the drain, we looked at the pipes and I reiterated we needed the estimate for the interior pipes. My clients were planning to ask for a credit from the developer as this was not completed with the rehab. We needed to know how much to ask for, and need to back this up with a written estimate. When I wrote the check to pay the plumbers I asked how long till we received the estimate and stated by the end of the next day was fine, but no later. It's over a week since I met them now and still no estimate or answer when I attempted to contact them. I had to cancel two of my own appointments that night due to their tardiness. The least they could have done was finish the job. As soon as I handed over the check I had a feeling they were just going to walk away and not finish the work supplying us with the free estimate as asked for. I cannot recommend Mark or his plumbers as my experience left me feeling he is dishonest and unprofessional. One would hope that when you pay a tradesman to do work, they would stand by their job and not disappear as soon as they get the check. Apparently if you want that type of service from a plumber you need to look else ware. I hope this review persuades you to do so. read more

Got drips, clogs and cracked seats...MD can fix what ails you (or should i say your plumbing.) The best plumbers I've ever used - they understand the nuances of geriatric plumbing. Friendly, competent, and fairly priced. Based on other reviews I called them when I had a leak that damaged the ceiling below the bathtub. They quickly identified that it was a problem with the tub's faucet that was leaking because a washer needed to be replaced. They didn't have the washer because it's a Toto brand faucet which isn't very common but they stopped the leak temporarily and came back the next day with the parts to repair the faucet. Second time we called we had a problem with a toilet that kept clogging. We'd clear it and then it would come back the next day. They took their time and made sure to check that the line was clear far into the system so that it wouldn't happen again. It used to clog daily and it's been a few weeks without problems so sure they got the clog out. They also were nice and put a new toilet seat that I had already purchased to replace a cracked one in another bathroom. I had trouble getting the bolts loose so asked if there was a trick to it and they took care of in a few minutes. I like that they are a small group of guys and Mark the owner clearly cares about providing good service. Deleted other plumbers from my contact list - they will be my first call next time my plumbing rebels or I want to install something. read more

When I bought my home, the kitchen sink had a nice feature where I could push the faucet handle, rather than lift the handle, in order to get purified drinking water. But that became a problem when I learned that the manufacturer has stopped selling the filter cartridges, and it looked like I might have to purchase a whole new faucet. Mark was able to adapt my faucet to a different kind of cartridge, and I am very happy with the results. I had an issue with drains in both bathrooms being clogged...I had a different plumber out yesterday who said the only way to fix the clogs was to hire a carpenter to cut a hole in our wall, and then they would have to come back to install something in the wall that would help get rid of the clog...my calculation was that was going to cost over $500, not to mention not being able to use the bathroom for awhile.
