"Let's just tear our floors out and put down vinyl." That was the last thing I told my wife before we called MDM, and let me tell you, I'm glad we called! My wife and I had recently bought our house, and when I ripped out all the carpet I discovered wood floors. Neglected, damaged, patched wood floors. We had termite damage, stains, and areas where the flooring had been cut out and replaced with plywood. Everyone we had talked to had pretty much told us that our floors were a lost cause, and that we should just replace it. We almost went that route, but we decided to contact MDM. Ismael came over that very same day, checked out our floors, and assured us that there was treasure under the layer of neglect that we were staring at. He was also honest, and told us that because of the excessive character our floor had, we could choose to go with a darker stain if we decided we wanted to hide any imperfections that were uncovered. No need though! His crew showed up day one, sanded down the floors, worked quickly to do all the repairs that were needed, and left us with great looking natural floors. I'm telling you, whether you have great looking floors that need a little attention or older floors with "excessive character" that you're ready to give up on, give these guys a call. We contracted MDM Hardwood to install laminate flooring in our split-level home in August, 2013. Mark McClellen, the owner, and his team (+2) removed and discarded our old carpet, leveled the floors, did some custom work on the landing, and installed laminate flooring and new baseboards. Bottom line: the work was done per schedule and per estimate, our place was cleaned up at the end of each work day, everyone was professional, and the flooring, stairs, and custom landing look great! Mark does the work himself and does not sell products. Although he can provide recommendations on brands and flooring sources, clients are free to choose their own flooring, which mitigates any conflicts of interest with selling specific products. Therefore, this business model does come with some considerations: MDM Hardwood is not a one-stop shop, and because Mark does all the work himself, he can take about a week to respond to (non-urgent) emails. My husband and I were fine with this because Mark is more craftsman than businessman and we preferred the freedom to purchase whatever flooring we wanted. This review is WAY overdue (hey, I made a rhyme!) but better late then never. I cannot rave enough about the quality of customer service and craftsmanship of Mark McClellan and his wonderful crew. The attention to detail, the constant communication and the general small business attitude made all the difference. I found MDM on Yelp (thank you previous Yelpers!) and after contacting a few people directly, decided to have Mark come and see my space and provide an estimate. He was right on time and maintained a good sense of humor as my cat dashed around like a lunatic while he took measurements. Within 24 hours I had a quote, for both hardwood flooring as well as laminate. Now, in an attempt to be a responsible consumer, I contacted others for quotes. Both were MUCH higher in price, and MUCH less communicative when it came to gathering more details and talking about schedule. My gut instinct had been to go with MDM, so I finally called and scheduled the start date for the work. I had talked to Mark about gathering options for flooring, since I knew what color I wanted, but didn't have an education on finish, texture, etc. He brought over many samples and let me hang onto a few so that I could see them in both day and evening light. Mark also sent me to a local showroom, where I found the exact flooring I wanted. The only problem...WAY more than I had budgeted. So what did he do? Mark called some of his suppliers and was able to get the material I wanted at the price I wanted as well!! So Day 1 of the project Mark arrived right on time and by the time I got home from work had made major progress. All the nasty carpeting had been ripped out, cracks sealed and subflooring prepped for the next day. In the meantime, to complicate things, I decided to have my fireplace refaced, and hired another contractor to do the work. In his endless efforts to accommodate my needs, the MDM team spent the next 2 days working around the fireplace area (and contractors), leaving that flooring installation until the fireplace guys had finished. The total install took about 4 days, and during that time the guys shifted my furniture around as necessary and replaced it exactly as it was (unless otherwise instructed). Finally, I had ordered an area rug for the living room which needed to be put in place before the furniture was restored to its location. Lucky me, I inherited a coffee table that weighs +300lbs, and knew that I would never be able to put it back on my own. Again, Mark was able to accommodate and hold off for an extra few days to wait for delivery of the rug before returning with his guys to put things back in place. In the end, I cannot say enough how ridiculously happy I am with the results (see pics that I posted). Mark is a man of serious integrity and it shines through in his customer interactions and quality of work. This brought me to Yelp, where I searched through all the companies this site listed as well companies I found online. I had several estimators come out and look at my job. I didn't feel comfortable with any of them until Mark came. It also helped that i read though all of the reviews on Yelp. These reviews are real, as I can attest to the work he did. When I first met Ismael during the inspection and estimating process he was actually there at the same time I had another hardwood company rep at the house for an estimate. Ismael is the sole reason I decided on MDM Floors. I'm sure most flooring companies do great work and are reasonably competitive in price per square foot, although not all have them have the attention to detail, communication style and professionalism that Ismael has. He communicated through phone and texts once the project started and would give regular updates on the progress of the job, without me even asking. It was refreshing to know that MDM still recognizes that the little extra details go such a long way with consumers. Ismael, Alfredo and a 3rd man completed the work on time and delivered on exactly what was promised. Mark McClellan of MDM Hardwood Flooring replaced all the wall to wall carpet in our home with Old Master French Connection Natural Oak. This is an engineered wood product with a 4 mm layer of natural oak veneer tightly bound to a plywood substrate. It is the recommended kind of product when the planks will be attached with a special adhesive to a cement under layer. It prevents warping when the planks are allowed to acclimate to the home environment for several weeks prior to installation. This flooring has an oiled finish which enhances the natural beauty of the wood, bringing out a soft sheen while keeping the grain visible. After interviewing and obtaining quotes from several reputable wood flooring contractors, we asked Mark to do the wood floor installation part of our home remodel. As he advised, we purchased the flooring well in advance of the installation. In our case this turned out to be about 8 months in advance! Mark was not only knowledgeable and professional, but helpful and friendly too. He worked with other contractors regarding scheduling which is often subject to unexpected changes. He was here in the beginning to rip out the old carpet. He returned many months later to install the flooring. Each member of his crew was competent and professional. The results, as the attached photos attest, were spectacular. Mark is a perfectionist. He worked with the tile contractor to ensure that the join between the two materials would be flush and smooth, requiring no threshold. He prepped and installed all the baseboard, even around curved walls. I have attached photos to highlight these details which make all the difference in the quality of the final result. Mark just finished another job for us and did a fantastic job. I've known him for several years. I work in home improvement and have referred him on many jobs and he has now also done two homes for me personally. I just learned today that he suffered a massive heart attack last Saturday while riding his bike and despite the response of a physician who happened to be right there, he was dead before he made it to the hospital. Very satisfied with his work. Mark is very detail oriented and very meticulous in his work. He came with a very strong referral and I didn't look any further. My floors needed some leveling work and Mark used a 10 feet straight edge to make sure floors were leveled properly.y It takes a while to get in touch with him. After a few voice mails and emails I was finally able to get in touch with him. From there on, it was very smooth. Email response turn-around time is 24-36 hours so you need to be patient. He has one rule, he never picks up phone in regular business hours, or time when he is at work. The best time to get in touch in my experience was between 7 and 8 am. read more

We bought an almost 100-year old craftsman and needed a hardwood specialist with incredible attention to detail that could preserve our original hardwood. I am happy to say that Mark, Ismael, and his team well exceeded our expectations! And here are a few reasons why. First, we originally wanted to keep the same color of wood as the original white oak. Ismael, one of the lead guys on his team, came out to help us think through the project and spent a good hour or so looking at the floors, picking at the corners, and walking us through some of the upsides and challenges of various options. Then, once the bulk of the renovation was done and it was time for the floors, Mark came out and actually helped us think through how best to save the original hardwood even though we had to splice in several areas where remodeling had removed pieces. The solution was to darken the wood a bit with stain so that the wood from newer white oak trees would blend with the 100 year old wood that we were able to save. I was cautiously optimistic. As detailed below, I can say now that it worked out flawlessly. Second, they did a superlative job in exactly the amount of time they said it would take for exactly the price they said it would be. The reliability of someone giving you a true price, sharing details about inexpensive options, and understanding our needs is really hard to place a value on, but it's worth quite a bit. So is getting the job done in a quality manner and on time. By the time we were at the hardwood stage we were on a time crunch and his team's ability to keep the schedule was greatly appreciated. Third, now that we are living in the house I can say that the actual quality of the work, the transitions between our tile work and our hardwood, and the look of our floors all are quite impressive. We've had lots of friends and new neighbors over and they all compliment the work he did. I don't write alot of reviews because I am rarely moved to say something so great about a business that I think it's worth resetting my password (which I always forget) and sitting down to think through what was so great about the business in the first place. I'll make an exception in Mark's case because the way he treated my wife and I and the work his team did was really top notch. I would recommend MDM Hardwood without reservation to anyone who asked. I must be dealing with this company's evil twin or something. We called Mark at the end of December to discuss refinishing the hardwood floors in our new house. The previous owner was still living there and would be moved out soon, but we wanted to know if he had time to do our floors before mid-February. It took him a day to call us back and then he said he'd have to check with his floor guy, Ismael. My husband waited a week and called to see what was going on. Another day to get a call back saying they could do the job. Great! So we wanted him to evaluate our floors before the work was done, get an estimate, and talk about stain colors. So we scheduled an appt for Ismael to meet my Realtor at the house since we still live across the country. That went fine- Ismael was on time. We got an estimate e-mailed to us a few days later. It was very inexpensive- even the Realtor was a bit surprised. So we decided to e-mail Mark a bunch of questions, since calling always required at least a day of waiting before we got a call back. So we wanted to know what kind of guarantee he offered, what our stain color choices were, and how we should protect the floors from the movers when we move in. Mark answered NONE of our questions, and told us Ismael would be the one to answer our questions. A day or two later, we got a text of a pic of stain colors. That's it. No phone call to discuss how the floors looked, if there was damage that needed to be repaired, nothing. I thought it was VERY weird that the owner of the company wouldn't tell us if he offered a guarantee or warranty for his work and wouldn't tell us how to protect the floor from movers. I was getting a weird vibe by this point, so we started looking for someone else to do our floors. Ismael called and left a message with my husband a few days later asking if we had questions. By this point we were kind of fed up. The time it took to return calls was a little ridiculous and I thought it was super weird that the owner didn't know Ismael's schedule to know if he could even do our floors and wouldn't answer any of our questions. It all seemed very shady. We found someone else who charged about $500 more and actually returns our phone calls and answered all of our questions to our satisfaction. read more

We purchased a new home without any flooring in the summer of 2011 and used Yelp to find a hardwood installer. We decided to find our own hardwood supplier/broker on Ebay and submitted Mark's measurements to make our hardwood purchases. Mark and his assistant at the time, Angel, did an excellent job leveling the concrete floor and installing about 1600 sq. ft. of hardwood , including the staircase and base moldings. Additionally, he and Angel worked well with our tile guy during the process. I've read some reviews about Mark's delay in responding to messages/emails. We did encountered this response delay but Mark was a one-man company (with one assistant at the time of contract). Ultimately, everything worked out. So here we are, one year later, the workmanship and quality of the installation still uphold. We highly recommend Mark McClellan for hardwood installation. read more

I called 3 contractors from Yelp, all of whom had 5-star reviews. Ishmael called me back within half an hour of me calling. One other called me that evening and the other never called back. Ishmael arrived the same day and scheduled the work for the next day. The select grade oak floors in my home of 17 years, which I subsequently rented out, had been water damaged and trashed by my tenant. I was offered the option of water based polyurethane or oil based polyurethane (which takes longer to apply and dry, but is more durable). I chose the oil base with no stain. The floors look brand new and totally changed the look of the house. I couldn't be more pleased. Not only that, but the guys knew how to run a sander. The floors are 100% even with no grooves like some lesser experienced workers make. The guys all took their time, were very polite and took the time to sand and polish between coats. The cost was extremely reasonable and the work of the highest caliber. I can't recommend MDM highly enough. read more

We recently purchased a house in Point Loma and inherited floors that may not have been refinished since the day they were installed... in 1942. When we began our hunt for 'floor guys' we called MDM Hardwood and another guy. I will concur with some of the reviews that Mark can be hard to get in touch with - but MDM Hardwood is worth the wait. Also, once you have Ishmul's cell number, you will see that he is very responsive and helpful - even through text if that works for you. All in all, we had ~1,000 sq.ft. of flooring that needed to be refinished, and the original quote was $1825 to sand and finish naturally, as we wanted. The other guy actually came in with a lower estimate, but once we met Ishmul we decided to go with MDM - they seemed confident and were able to answer all of our questions clearly. We set a time for MDM to start the work and they showed up as promised, and on time. On the first day they discovered an issue - a stain that wouldn't come out and wouldn't be hidden with the natural look we were going for in the home. Ishmul called to let us know about the issue and my we went over to take a look. While at the house, the team took the time to stain the floor naturally to show us,what the stain in the wood would look like with a natural stain. Then, they went a step farther and tried out two darker stains to give us some other options that we could use to hide the stain. We chose one of the stains they suggested and the price increased to $2190. The cost is all based on square footage, and is more expensive when you add stain. Finally, we were undecided about the finish and were between satin and semi-gloss. On day one the floors were sanded, day two they were stained, and the first coat of varnish was applied. Ishmul had his team varnish one half of the house in satin and the other in semi-gloss so we could see the difference with the first of three coats of varnish. We chose the semi-gloss and they completed the job within three days. We are very happy that we found MDM Floors and we're thrilled with their work. The only negative was that the team we had left our garden hose out on the lawn with the water running and left some trash in our kitchen before leaving on the final day. As we haven't actually moved into the house yet, we knew it was not our mess. Otherwise, all went well and we would recommend them to anyone looking to have their floors refinished. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for some time now. My husband and I hired MDM to install hand-scraped hardwood flooring throughout all of the main living areas in our new construction home. The flooring is beautiful (purchased through one of Mark's preferred vendors), and the installation is great! Mark, Angel and Patrick worked hard for approximately 1 week to complete our flooring, and Mark came back to do some touch-ups afterwards himself. Mark was on-site each day, did some of the work himself, and was regularly in touch with anything he needed or any questions he had. We had to live in our home while the entire downstairs (and stairwell) were being layer. The guys did a great job accommodating our need to still access the upstairs & downstairs of our home. The price was also quite reasonable. My only complaint was that the flooring wasn't sparkling clean when they departed, so I wished they'd cleaned up the dust & marks a bit more. They also nicked our baseboards a bit, but I guess that is to be expected. Overall, we are very happy with our wood flooring. read more

MDM did an excellent job on beautiful new custom 4" plank white oak floor staining, quickly and at a very fair price. I am a realtor and was supervising several improvement projects for out-of-town clients who had purchased a town home in La Jolla. We had hired another company to install the wood floors and stain them. Suddenly, my clients decided to arrive a week earlier and the original floor installer said there was no way they could have them stained in time. So I took to Yelp and emailed MDM. Mike emailed me the next morning and said Ismael would call me - which he did later in the day. I explained the floors had to be finished within 3 days and that the first day they could begin work was a Friday - which meant working over the weekend (my clients offered a $500 bonus). Ismael and I discussed the dark wood stain (Minwax Jacobean) to be used and that we wanted a satin commercial poly that would dry fast and hold up in heavy traffic (clients have dogs). They did an amazing job - a whole crew descended and they sanded for over 8 hours, and then stained and did 3 coats of poly over the next 3 days, with light sanding in between - also installed and stained all the trim pieces). All done within 3 days. It looked so beautiful and my clients were thrilled. MDM will be my go-to guys for all future clients. They will do simple sanding and refinishing to old 1920's-1960's era wood floors and darker staining and even new wood installations. In fact, if I had found out about them earlier I would have hired them to do the wood install. By the way - we were installing directly on concrete which means you can't use solid wood. MDM can use a similar higher end product to what we used which was 5/8 inch of solid white oak fused to a composite base - which is then glued to a sealed and leveled concrete floor. You then sand the wood like a real wood floor and stain - you get a real wood smooth feeling not like the pre-finished planks that show edges (the stuff you see at Home Depot or Shaw) - and - it can be re-sanded and stained if needed - smelled amazing when they were sanding the white oak. Beautiful job under a tight time-frame, thrilled clients - and that makes me look good! P.S. - I called several other companies, recommended on Yelp, and they wanted to charge me almost double (and charge extra for commercial poly). When I told them I was going with MDM they said they'd match the price; how slimy - gouge me if I don't know any different and then cut prices to get the job. I'd much rather work with someone who is fair and ethical all the time!! Ismael is you man! I used MDM to install more than 2,000 sq ft of glue down walnut floors. Mark and his staff did a tremendous job and were incredibly professional. The floors are gorgeous and after getting quotes from about 5 different installers, I'm more than confident that I made the right choice. One of the most important things to consider when finding someone to do a project as expensive and important as floor installation is identifying someone who is an expert in that area. MDM does wood floor installation. That's all they do. They know everything there is to know about the process and materials. If you ask Mark if he can help you out with something else, he'll say no and refer you to someone who can. He takes pride in his work and isn't trying to make a quick buck by trying to take on things that are outside of his expertise. I made the mistake of hiring contractors who claimed they could do "anything," and lost a lot of money on different projects around my house. I won't do that again. I noticed some reviews complaining about Mark being unresponsive. Mark was always very responsive via email, text and phone, however, it's important to keep in mind this guy is A. busy as heck on the job and not sitting behind a desk, and B. he fields a ton of project requests because his work is in very high demand. They had a lot of damage and there were areas that were poorly done. We were gone for a week and just as promised everything was done when we returned. They replaced some boards and laced in some in spots I couldn't even imagine could be fixed. I didn't even recognize the place! 8 months later they still look great. The price was on point and we just had them back to put more boards in where we opened up some doorways and again they did wonderful and quick work. I was so pleases with Mark and Angel's work! I found MDM on Yelp and I couldn't be happier. We were desperate to get rid of our gross carpet. I did some research and found a few flooring companies to get quotes from. I had one guy come and do an estimate and then Mark. Once I met Mark, I already felt comfortable and like he was really willing to work within our budget. He was very honest about what he thought would work and how we would work within our small space. After looking at the flooring warehouse for samples we liked, he got back to us about pricing and availability. We got the work scheduled pretty quickly and he said it would take 1-2 days. He showed up at 8am on a Wednesday and they got right to work. I was impressed by how well Mark and Angel kept things clean and when they left for the day, they had wiped down the flooring that was finished. There was no debris or anything left sitting around. They scheduled to come back the next day at the same time. Once again, they got right to work. They finished the work that day, except one T-mold by the front door. Mark informed me that they had to have that piece ordered and it would be in the following day. He came back around 10am and finished that part, while fixing a mold around the fireplace that had not adhered as well. Mark and his crew have installed the floors in my condo twice now. My tenant had a plumbing back-up and the original floors were totally damaged. I had such a great experience the first time, that when I realized I needed to replace the floors again, I didn't even consider any other company. I knew in advance that during the installation Mark was going to be out of town. We ran in to some problems with the water damage and Mark remained in contact almost daily while he was away. Firstly Mark is a great guy.. very professional and great attitude. We decided to get the carpet and old tile replaced (except in kitchen and baths) before we moved into our new property. We talked to 3 small businesses and had 2 of them come over to our house to take measurements and give us estimates and Mark was one of them. Apart from the above factors on the first line we liked the fact that Mark was the guy who was personally going to lay the floors and take care of the job instead of hiring a bunch of less experienced guys or outsource it to some 3rd party contractor who does the actual job. Mark was easily reachable by calls, text and email. He quickly sent us an estimate after his first visit and it has all the details with accurate break down of various costs involved (removing carpet, tile, sanding down/leveling the concrete sub floors, which brand of glue and moisture barrier etc..). He offered us a good overall price. He took us to these whole sale wood floor selling stores that he often did business with and helped us with the selection of the floors we wanted. He told us the job would be done in 5 days. It stretched a bit into the 6th day morning half to finish up some of the baseboards, it wan't a problem for us as we had more time to move-in. End product is amazing and we really like our new floor. But I realized I wasn't a big fan of the T-mold he installed to bridge my hardwood floor and the master bath tile and also the thin pieces of wood laid (I don't know what its called) to cover the gap between doors and the sliding doors to our patio. We told him at the beginning that we are going to replace the old tile in bath and kitchen so his job at the gap between wood floor and kitchen and guest bath were not 100% (to my satisfaction)... but like I said it was not his fault bcz we told him we are going to replace the tile. For various reasons we postponed that. We may have to live with this for another 6 months until we replace the old tile. Bottom-line, like the 99%? of happy customers of Mark/MDMHardwood here on Yelp we too would totally recommend him for wood flooring job. read more

They just handled it. Other companies didn't include this in their estimates. Other companies did not know how to address the no base board without tons of unsightly calking. I used MDM Hardwood on two separate occasions. The first job was technically challenging because I was keeping existing engineered hardwood floors and wanted to extend that same flooring into a new area of the home by lacing it in (no transition pieces.) I interviewed several flooring experts who said it was hard and time consuming and therefore costly. Mark was not only very fair with his pricing but he knew his stuff and I felt comfortable with his ability to get the job done correctly. He did not disappoint. My wife and I a month later decided to remove our old carpets in all our bedrooms and replace it with laminate. This time we already knew who we trusted and called Mark for a follow-up job. We are very happy with their work. Sometimes he can be hard to get a hold of due to a busy schedule but they always have gotten beck to me. If you are a little time flexible, it's a good idea to wait a few days and allow them the opportunity to bid the job. Their pricing is very reasonable and their workmanship is superb. I also appreciated Mark's politeness and calm demeanor. A good attitude goes a long way in my book. In my opinion, MDM is the best all round wood flooring installation service you will find in the San Diego area. I have done a lot of research and I truly believe this. I contacted this company Wednesday after reading the good reviews here. I received an email from Mark within an hour or so, impressive. I sent him my number so one of his techs could call me. I returned the call this morning just to be told he was too busy to come by and give us a good estimate but could give a ballpark over the phone. I explained we need a firm estimate because we ARE refinishing the floors, he still told me he was too busy. I guess you have all the customers you need. read more

Too busy??? I called and left a voicemail message with all my info and requested an appointment for a quote... never received a call back. Three days later I called again, got Mark's voicemail again, and left another message. It's been another 3 days and still no call back. If you're work schedule is full, just return my call and tell me so. Ignoring calls leaves a terrible impression. read more

After seeing the great reviews on Yelp I decided to go with Mark with my flooring project. The project consisted of installing laminate flooring in 3 bedrooms (~450 sq ft total) and they did a fantastic job. They did it all from removing the old carpet and baseboards, to installing the new flooring and baseboards in a very efficient manner. They would've finished everything in one day if it weren't for some discrepancies in the concrete in one of the bedrooms, which they fixed for me. He's definitely my go-to-guy for any hardwood or laminate flooring needs. read more

Note: Project was 315sq/ft of glue down bamboo floor and mvp vapor barrier on concrete. I couldn't be happier with how this job went. What was turning into a big headache when dealing with other installers ended up being a very easy and painless install once I got in touch with Mark. Thanks for a JOB WELL DONE! Professionalism - A+ Price - A+ Workmanship - A+ Reliability - A+ I found MDM here on yelp. I spoke with Mark on the phone and he came across as knowledgeable and professional. His price was cheaper than the other 4 or 5 quotes I had received and because of this I was a little nervous that the quality would be poor or he would lack experience (we'll get back to that in a minute). We set up a start date & I asked him to call me the day before to confirm. He actually called when he said he would! He asked to start at 8am, and low and behold he showed up 5 minutes early instead of an hour or two late as seem to be the industry standard. Mark prepped the floors, took out a high point in the slab, and spread the moisture barrier. The next day he and his assistant showed up first thing and got right to work. I left for an hour and when I returned they had about 1/3 of the room done. A couple hours later and they were finishing up. Mark even bought the glue to do the floors and only charged me for what he actually used (nice - an installer that has the cash for the miscellaneous expenses that any true pro should be able to front). So, now for the big question - did the quality match the price? Honestly, I think I got much better quality than what I paid for. I see absolutely no mistakes, and I'm the type of person that goes thru and inspects every square inch and knit picks. The gaps are all nice and tight and they dispersed the darker boards throughout the room as I had asked so that there is a nice variation in color/tint without any large darker patches. They look spectacular! I'm really stoked on MDM and I would love to throw more work his way because he has the type of work ethic that deserves to get a lot of business. I'm not one to write reviews but I feel obliged to do so. Do yourself a favor and give him a call if you're searching for a wood floor installer.
