Eight months earlier, I visited the Mean Max taproom in Troy. While I enjoyed my visit there, I was disappointed that so many of the brews listed on their website were not available there, only at their taproom in Glens Falls. Well, I finally got here, and it was indeed worth it for me. The space is large and comfortable. Parking is convenient, usually spaces on US 9 right in front of their entrance is almost always available, and their downtown location makes it very convenient to visit other businesses. One of the reasons I like Mean Max so much is my preference for darker beers. They always have a number of them available, enough to make a flight of just those if you want (flights here are five 5oz. glasses), with quite a range of ABV's, if that matters to you. While the Troy taproom has numerous pinball machines, here they only have one Golden Tee with a large screen for it on the wall (something my friends would love). This area of Glens Falls is definitely worth a visit, and Mean Max should be part of it. read more

If you're a beer lover, Mean Max is worthy of a pilgrimage. Their head brewmaster, Jack Lamson, is truly a master at his craft. I'm somewhat convinced he's an actual wizard. He's also one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. I'm not a violent man, but I'd slap you across the face if at the bar you told me with a straight face the beer you ordered wasn't one of the best dang ones you've ever had. The only negative thing I can say is that now all other beer will lack in comparison. read more

Bring back the chalk board...or at least update Untapped. 2024 almost 2025 and you print the menus. The beer is good. But with a busy taproom and 22 taps you have your customers fighting over the menus. You also don't have the Farmacy menus either. Otherwise beer is good, staff is friendly, even if it is only a guess as to what is on tap. read more

My beer experience was a good one with Mean Max's We were fortunate to get a hold of one of their beers and were grateful that time allowed that to get that in. We had one of their beers that appears to be one of their popular ones which was the Shotgun Porter. This was a pretty tasty coconut porter that Steve and I both enjoyed. Updated review: Tap house with a massive selection (12 taps and 36+ cans of local breweries) unfortunately, like every other tap house in the state, dominated by NEIPA's and Sours that, let's be honest, give everyone who drinks them, diarrhea. Even worse, they just can't help themselves with the Grateful Dead, jam band music selection- I can literally smell the patchouly coming out of the speakers. Anyone got a hanky sack? (Thankfully, no) OK these may just be my problems... All that being said, they do book decent bands into the place occasionally and Wednesday night trivia is always packed, very popular and quite entertaining! My sister and I recently reserved the Glens Falls Tap Room for my parents surprise 50th anniversary party. We started planning over a year in advance and corresponded with Anne Barry and Torey. They were both amazing to deal with and made the planning process so seamless! Anne was beyond accommodating to any and all requests that we had. She even went as far as to block my parents from their facebook page so they would not see when Mean Max posted that they would be closed for a private party. Any questions we had were always answered thoroughly and promptly. There was a couple times where we stopped into the taproom and Torey was working. He was amazing in assisting us with any additional questions we had. We had a slide show on a usb cable that they happily projected on their wall in the taproom as well as on one of their tvs. The party went off without a hitch and we would most definitely recommend them to anyone looking to host an event. Our bartender, Christa, was beyond amazing and so friendly with everyone. She was so helpful with anything and everything we needed and our guests adored her! Overall we can't express enough how much Mean Max made our event perfect and catered to everything we asked. They are amazing to work with and did everything they could to make our event a success!!! We highly recommend them whether you're looking to reserve for a private party or just go and visit their taproom and have some amazing beers!!! Hit up Mean Max with friends on what turned out to be a pretty lively Saturday night at this location. Lots of patrons, lots of chatter and laughter; looked like most patrons were enjoying themselves quite a bit, myself included. Nutshell: *loud music *excellent beer *full pours *appropriately priced *no food offerings (but you can get delivery or bring your own) *clean *multiple dart boards available Beer was great! I had three different IPA's, including one double, and enjoyed them all. Lower Wolfjaw (the double IPA at 8.2%) for $6.50 a pint was a real treat and I hit that up 2x. Growler fills on most of their beers are 15 dollars. They do have fixed daily specials for each of the different days of the week, though they are closed on Mondays. They had 13 taps flowing with a variety of beers, though nothing too outlandish. Probably a quarter of their taps were IPA's of some variety. They had one bitter, an altbier, two stouts, a red ale, one lager, one brown ale, and a Nine Pin Cider tap. Beers vary in size and price based on each one's alcohol by volume content. I think the cheapest was $5.50 for a pint and the most expensive was 7 dollars for a 10 ounce pour. Plenty of seating and we found our beertender to be quick and friendly in her service. I loved the music they played (mostly grunge era rock), but it was a bit loud. They have a thumping sound system so at times it was a bit difficult to converse with others. No worries, though, Mean Max is a keeper for me. read more

We sat outside and the staff were awesome at keeping us nice and warm with the propane heaters. It was in the 50s but you couldn't even tell. The staff were friendly, personable and took the time to just chat with us. Very detail oriented and knowledgeable about the beers on tap. They also have flights. Everything is served in single use cups, silverware and plates. Not sure if this is a COVID thing or normal. read more

Finally made it to Mean Max! I've heard about it for the last year and I met a friend there last night. I was really surprised at how big the place is...I love the old factory warehouse high ceilings and massive space. The bar area is really nice; the counter is made of some kind of heavy, thick slate-like material and the people that run Mean Max are friendly and helpful (despite the name....). My friend and I started by sharing a flight - and it was mostly their dark beers. My personal favorite was the vanilla porter, but I wouldn't turn any of them down. Each had unique flavor and body...and I followed up with a small glass of the vanilla porter. (I declined a pint since I needed to drive home at some point!). There is a pile of menus from local restaurants that will deliver...or you can bring food in with you. It's encouraged to do so. There are plenty of high top tables near the entrance to bring in/order food and enjoy some of the great craft beers. In the back, there are several dart boards and the brewing equipment out in the open. I'm a fan and will be back. Check it out if you haven't yet! read more

How could we have missed this place for nine months?!? Maybe it was the new signage that caught our attention tonight as we were on our way to check out a different brewer just a bit further south. Just visiting Mean Max is a refreshing experience. They don't serve food, other than a bowl of bar snacks that will probably make you want to order more beer. But they do allow you to bring in your own food or have it delivered to you there. While the table-top menus described 15 different brews that they make, the blackboard menu showed that only eleven of them were available on the night of our visit. But there were also two hard ciders and five wines available. We decided to take advantage of the Flight offer of five, 5 ounce samples ($8.50) to taste a cross section of the brews. Starting with the Stout No Doubt (6.1% abv) oatmeal variety, the wife and I both enjoyed its excellent coffee flavor. On to the McCord (6.7% abv), a dark porter with little head and sweeter than the stout. I really enjoyed this one, but my wife found it sweeter than she likes. Next came the Holy Bock (6.7% abv) which the bartender told us was probably the most popular of all their beers. I think its popularity is because of its more mildness in flavor. Our 4th sample was the one my wife had been waiting for, their IPA, Tahawus (6.2% abv). She really enjoyed the bitterness and the hoppyness of this brew. However, our fifth and final sampling of Skylight (5.8% abv), another IPA, but a black IPA served on nitro, she found to be too sweet and not hoppy enough. I preferred the Skylight to the Tahawus. As you can surmise, this is a place to try new brews and have a good time. Bring your non-beer-drinking friends and let them enjoy the wines or the hard cider. They even have three real dart boards. Service from our bartender was very friendly, helpful, and informative. There is no doubt (just like their stout) that we'll be returning. read more

Great brewery We had several stouts that were excellently brewed and true to description. The brewery has a nice set of dart boards and assortment of board games. Bartender was incredibly informative and friendly. Great time all around. Would like to visit again to see if 5 star review is warranted but would urge any beer drinker to try. The beer list spans many styles and while I focus on stouts and porters they have beers across all styles. Highly recommend a visit. read more

We were attending Glens Falls Take A Bite event on an extremely hot and humid afternoon and decided to stop here for a little pick-me-up. The place has high top tables scattered around quite a large room with boards on the wall listing many beers and hard ciders which have become very popular... Trivia is held on Wednesday in which we did not partake and they also have dart competitions. Also in front of each bar stool they installed cell phone charging stations and hooks to hang your pocketbook/tote which I thought was a great idea. In a world inundated with lights, lites, ultras and flavored liquors, Mean Max gives the beer lover what they crave with a varied brew menu, and the most flexible food offerings in town. No, they dont serve food here, but you can order or bring your own! The downtown Glens Falls area has a wide array of food and delivery options for those that wish to order, but lots of people make their night out a pot-luck of sorts, with everyone bringing their own dish, and sharing home made food and great beer together. No worries about the atmosphere either, they are one of the few remaining pubs where you can actually sit and have a conversation without screaming into each others ear. That alone is worth a visit if you ask me. I sound like a salesman, but its hard not to support the place that has quickly become my favorite go to location for a beer and a night out. This week, they had 11 beers on tap: a lager, blonde, bock, ipa, english pale ale, brown ale, porter, hard cider, imperial ipa, stout and an imperial stout. While they all are fantastic, I can say that the "Stout No Doubt" is one of the best ive ever had. Tl/dr: Great beer, awesome atmosphere, and 3 REAL dart boards. Excellent beer all around. I tried a sampler of the Red Beard red ale, Back 40 smoked porter, Holy Bock, No Doubt stout and M'Cord potter and they were all delicious and true to style. Dave and Matt have come a long way with the quality of beer they make from when they first opened. The beer was always good however it truly is outstanding now. Place looks nice and lots if cool sounding beers. Ordered flight of 5 beers and canned beer. All the draft beer was piss hot. HOT as a cup of coffee. Bartender says the keg cooler broke, but beer temp is 45 degree. I asked for him to feel the beer. Refuses and says hes not going to discuss the matter with me and walks away never to return. Had us close out tab before beer served which was odd a first. he obviously knew that he was serving piss hot beer. I didn't know what else to do it say. I drank my friend's canned beer. The absolute best aspect of my visit was the fact that they were actively brewing at the time. The smell of boiling barley was intoxicating in itself! Truly transformed the experience and added to the ambiance. Not to mention, the beers I tried were spot-on for their style. The variety was welcome and the number of styles on draft was great. Mean Max is a welcome sight in Glens Falls. Unlike other local brewers, these guys are focused on beer, not food. When I last visited there were eight widely varied styles on tap: I drank three. My favorites so far are the titular Altbier and the Stout. Mmmm. read more

I'm going to reserve judgement on this place for a bit. Went in for first time recently on a busy night and the service was very slow. All they serve is beer so there needs to be a way to speed up the beer serving process if you want to make cash long term. They were using some sort of Ipad setup for a cash register that seems like it is way too slow. I almost left after waiting for 10 minutes to get a beer but was then served a couple of styles neither of which was anything to write home about. I'm going to go back in a few weeks to see if they've figured things out yet but for now I'd say I was hoping for more. read more

I'm not a beer snob and am happy with any lager or light beer, so im more about the place, the feel and the atmosphere when i go out to drink. Solid beer choices for all tastes as well as wine and a hard cider. The tables and bar made from reclaimed barn wood or from covered bridges that fell during Hurricane Irene which is a cool touch. true, they don't serve food, which I wish they did, but it's not a big enough deal breaker for me. This place is nice in the way that's it's mostly all new and clean. I wish there was a more selection of liquor, but I bet it's a brewery. Prices are pretty high though. They have some decent live music there, only problem is the sound is terrible in that place. Very pretty atmosphere and lights though. Stopped in at Mean Max last night while doing the bar crawl of Glen Street. Definitely one of the nicer places on the street now that Wallabee's is closed down. The staff is super nice, they have some great beers on tap, so I really cannot complain. Drinks were reasonably priced and they had some nifty growlers for sale. They had a Helles beer that my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed. They serve beer only, no food, but they will provide you with all the local menus if you want to order in food. read more

It's a local place run by local guys that decided to turn their love of brewing into a business. Good beer, good variety, good people. Will you like every beer?
