Love this place. Been coming here since they opened. Always great food at a fair price point. Since the hours have changed for the business during COVID, it might be beneficial to have a answering machine or some sort of automated response set up to let potential customers know your business is closed for the day. Wow. This place had me impressed. It's really rare to find a quality BBQ place past the Bible Belt but Meat, you did just that. Great ambiance, quality booze, and a brisket I would happily have as a last meal. That brisket was buttery, flavorful, and divine. So tonight my wife and I attempted to order some food from here. Sadly they were sold out, unfortunately these things happen. The reason why I am leaving a one star review is because we drove from Battle Creek to Lansing specifically for dinner and tried calling several times. No one answered the phone, and when we walked in we were greeted by three girls standing at the front counter laughing saying they were sold out. No apology, no nothing, just laughed and turned us away. The least they could've done is answered the phone to advise that they were sold out. This is extremely poor customer service and will make me rethink the next time we come to Lansing for dinner. read more

I thought it would be difficult to find good BBQ Here, but I was wrong. Everything I had was very good. The only fail point was not have a North Carolina Piedmont Sauce. The "Pulled Pork" actually pulled a chopped a bit, was tender and moist. Had a nice flavor. They did have a vinegar sauce, Vin #666 that was ok with it, but not a North Carolina style sauce. I tried each of the sauces. The sausage was nice and spicy. Again, I tried all the sauce and settled on Hot Garlic for this. I couldn't get the right combo, you might try Jazzy Q or the Carolina Mustard with it. The brisket was a little dry, but thick. But tasty. Again I sampled some with all the sauces and settled on Jazzy Q. The beans were very good. I did enjoy them. Maybe my favorite was the Spicy creamed corn. Very nice! Corn bread, nothing special. We were heading to MSU to visit our nephew and needed a place to have dinner... while E. Lansing has plenty of places to eat... we wanted something unique... so I searched yelp and found this restaurant. The restaurant is located in the Old Town of Lansing, the area feels like small town USA, there are lot of new buildings and it seems the place is in process of modernization... there's some nice new townhomes'/condo's around the place... parking is free on the street. They have a gate that leads you through the outdoor patios seating area and then to the main door to the restaurant. Make sure you go inside and put your name on the list... waiting time will depend on how big your party is... our party was five and they said it'd be 40 minutes before we were seated... I can see why... there aren't that many tables inside that can accommodate large groups... if you are party of 4 and below, then you are good. We finally did get seated, outside, five people on a four people table... no problem as we were hungry and wanted to eat. The foods that we ordered were as follows. - Pickle Fries - Meat Plates - sliced brisket and extra order of ribs and sides - Meat Plates - pulled pork with extra order of ribs and sides - Meat pPates - Texas Hot Links Sausage with extra order of ribs and sides - Meat Plates - wings with extra order of ribs and sides - Meat Mountain. Okay, so here's my review of the food. - Pickle Fries - cut like string fries, this dish was great. While I liked the dipping sauce, I did make my own bbq sauce using their bbq sauce on the table. I would get this again for sure!! - Brisket - lightly dried, but it was still decent. - Wings - moist and juicy... the wings were still juicy the next day when I heated it up in the toaster oven. - Texas Hot Links Sausage - minus the saltiness, the sausage was good. I have to say, this place is really good... I expected other wise based upon all my BBQ joints that I've had visited... next time I'm there, I will try their "The Boss Logg"; I guess you only live once :) Did we have leftovers? of course, I took them home and ate it over the weekend. Tucked away from the street in a little nook, Meat BBQ looked like it was doing slow business on Sunday night. Walking in, however, the tables were full and a crowd had packed itself into the small waiting area. BBQ award certificates crowded the walls next to Star Wars art and heavy metal memorabilia. The Stars and Stripes bannered the ceiling next to Ronnie James Dio. They were out of most of what we came for - no ribs, no pork, no links. This is the only reason why I didn't give 5 stars. I really like this hole-in-the-wall restaurant. We went during the tail-end of lunch but fortunately they had several tables available so we didn't have to wait. I don't think the "Meat Southern BBQ" is very accurate if you have ever had southern bbq but they sure have a lot of meats and some tasty dishes! This is not a good location if you are a vegetarian, the menu lists "Vegetarian Options", the only options listed are soda which is funny. We started off with their parmesan garlic fries. This appetizer was awesome! It looked like handcut fries and had lot's of parmesan cheese and it seemed like good, parmesan cheese and not something cheap. The dish didn't last very long. I wanted to really dig into their meats and I got their two meat plate and went with ribs and sliced brisket. Their brisket was just OK it seemed to be cooked in the oven and not smoked, it didn't taste like it was smoked and I didn't see any smoke rings which is not a good sign. They do have a large variety of bbq sauces and it was pretty good with some of their signature bbq sauces. IMO a good smoked brisket shouldn't need any bbq sauce but each to their own. Their ribs was much better, they were big and real meaty. Again not much of smoke flavor but they were still quite good and cooked well. They were pretty lean but that is fine with me, it can get real messy if the ribs are really fatty. I went with their blue cheese potato salad and cole slaw as side dishes. The potato salad was awesome, the cole slaw was too thin and I can't imagine anyone that likes it. They also give you a corn muffin with bacon candied butter, the butter was good but the corn muffin was dry. They seem to carry one of my favorite beer on draught, Shiner Bock but I didn't order it so I don't know if they always carry it. Their creamy corn is awesome and well seasoned. This place get busy and is very quaint, so plane accordingly. As a certified bbq freak, I put this place on the must try list. When I first sat down, I was told they were outta ribs, now this may annoy some people, but to me it's bbq, it's smoked hours before for it to be fresh your are going to run out. So sure I was disappointed, but I also thought whatever does come out is fresh and it was. I also found out they use coal to smoke there meat, that my friends is the key to good bbq, that's something that slows for instance doesn't use, slows uses the industrial gas smoker, which to me isn't good bbq. I ordered the two meat, brisket and sausage, that came with two sides creamy corn and blue cheese potato salad. The brisket was just right, had some bark and the right amount of smokiness. The sausage was also really good, with some heat. I really liked both sides, both something different with ingredients I've never had with those types of sides, kudos for the fresh ideas. If you like good bbq plan ahead and give this place a try, you'll leave in bbq nirvana or at least close too it. read more

I went to Meat for the first time today with my family, and I was excited to see what my brother and mom had bragged to me about. It was a busy day, and with the restaurant full we were initially told a one hour or longer wait. This is fine, but its the 21st century - they should really consider a system that takes phone numbers and texts you when the table is close to ready. Especially because the wait time didn't ACTUALLY take an hour - we nearly lost our table after coming back 30 minutes later while browsing other nearby stores. This doesn't happen when the restaurant has a good messaging system, and Meat seems popular enough to warrant having the tech at the front of house. Once seated, Emily did a wonderful job of taking care of our orders and drinks. I ordered the fatty beef brisket and a cup of Texas Chili, and my brother and mom ordered the Meat Fries and a Meat Mountain, respectively. The brisket was very good, with the meat juicy and tender and the cream corn was delightful. The sauces range from sweet to spicy to bold, and I can easily see how different offerings would benefit from the range offered at the table. My brother and mom were also very pleased/delighted with their entrees. The Texas Chili came fully dressed, and I enjoyed every bite. It's a dark chili in terms of body, no prevailing sense of tomato in the chili at all. The brisket pieces are terrific nuggets, and heavy flavors of onion, garlic, and jalapeno hit the palate. This is a dark and bold chili, and I like it a lot. A wish: I would love to see the cream corn integrated in some way into the cornbread. The cornbread on its own was passable, but not remarkable. Adding that cream corn the way they prepare it in the cornbread would greatly elevate that cornbread. I ended up mixing it together to simulate the flavor, and it's tasty! A gripe: The Sweet and Tangy coleslaw left much to be desired. The cabbage and carrots used in it were fresh and crisp, but the dressing was missing in action, ESPECIALLY compared to all the other bold and wonderful flavors presented. It was dressed, and there was visual evidence that it got tossed, but the flavor in that dressing was weak and indiscriminate, neither Sweet nor Tangy. And while I get the joke about vegetarians on the menu, the catch is, if you're going to say that that was a $3.00 side, I know the cabbage and carrots cost you 15 cents maximum to make my potion. That sauce HAS to be good, and it just failed to deliver anything today. Times two for my mom's portion also being lackluster, and that's $6.00 of value we missed out on today. Today's rating of 4-stars: This is very easily 5 if the front of house service improves its system and the coleslaw is . . . well, actually a well-dressed slaw. So many impeccable things, marred by minor, yet distinct imperfections that suggest a need for some polish to elevate the game up just one more notch.
