    Olive burger and rings.
    Jim S.

We finally made it here. We first notice the love that the owners have for the people. A regular had to call them to inform he was not coming in today. Just so the owners wouldn't worry about him. You can tell, they put much love and care into their food, by the way they described our menu options to us. We went with the Miami burger with fries and an olive burger with onion rings. They both are wonderful. The Miami is a cumbled burger with the olive sauce and grilled bun. The olive burger has the right balance of tasty sauce and olives. Absolutely will return.

What is the one flavor that speaks to Mid-Michigan's core? Quality Dairy Chip Dip? A sip of Faygo or Vernor's? Uncle John's Cider & Donuts, or an order of chips & salsa from Handy's? For me, it's far and away a bite of an olive burger. That combination of charbroiled burger and olive sauce does it for me every time. This month I was elated we got to review one of the originators. Weston's Kewpee Burger is a Lansing institution. There's little disputing that. Situated downtown on Washington Square and using a recipe for olive sauce that is older than 95 years, the restaurant is nostalgic in all the right ways. The décor is unapologetic in referencing their history and with good reason. Serving comfort food with quality service to downtown's current movers and shakers and former residents who have returned and want an instant reminder of home is something they should be proud of. In pre-pandemic times, it wasn't unusual for a line out the door during the lunch time rush. During the pandemic, Weston's ownership was among the most compassionate with their staff and worked hard to keep the business open even as much of their traditional foot traffic has yet to return. However, you can tell the folks that work here enjoy not just one another but making great food for their customers. Essential During my visits to Weston's this month, I cheerfully tried the Kolossal Olive Burger. Appropriately named as this sandwich is massive, the burger perfectly cooked, and topped with a heaping serving of olive sauce (Chopped, not minced) just the way I like it. There are several local establishments that offer an olive burger and even a few national chains that attempt to offer local flavor. Few of them compared to this tried-and-true version. As I stood in line, there were two gentlemen from south of Jackson who were in town exploring the Capital City. They both ordered olive burgers and as I walked out, I asked them how it was. "It doesn't matter much what else we find today; this burger was worth the drive." Indeed. Comfort Classics My culinary comrades and I sampled several other items off the menu. The Turkey Burger was juicy, surprisingly flavorful, and delightfully crispy- which is atypical of most turkey burgers. The onion rings were solid, but not as good as the sweet potato fries or the regular French fries. Both are seasoned brilliantly- brown sugar on the sweet potato and a light dusting of Greek seasoning on the regular. The chili was hearty and balanced- not too many beans or tomatoes or not enough meat and welcomed on a chilly January afternoon. The restaurant also offers several traditional daily specials- meatloaf and mashed potatoes, bean and ham soup, pot roast, tuna pasta salad, or mac & cheese, all depending on the day. I was fortunate to be in on a day that the goulash was available. Packed with herbs, tomatoes, and ground beef, huddled up with macaroni spirals and served with garlic Texas toast, it was an absolute hit and I had to arm wrestle others in my house for the leftovers. Award Winning The Weston Kewpee Burger team were recently awarded the judges award for their olive burger at a competition on South Beach, Miami. In honor of that recognition, the restaurant now offers a Miami burger- a crumbled burger with a cheesy olive sauce. This olive burger 2.0 is my new favorite in town. It differs from the traditional olive burger in yummy, savory ways. The brininess of the olive sauce somehow works even better in this iteration and the crunchy, flavorful crumbles are a wonderful twist. The best innovations are rooted in tradition.

Got the infamous olive burger. It was incredible. Patties are cooked well done but and they're perfect. The olive sauce is awesome. Fries were bland. Kinda disappointing. Should've gotten the sweet potato fries. Simple service - order at the register and they bring out the food to you.

Super happy that I was able to try their famous Miami burger! The beef was seasoned nicely, the bread was nice and butter, and the olive mayo is something I want to try more frequently when I home cook! I'd get the burger and and again. The fries were pretty forgettable. Staff super friendly and neat vibe inside

This classic downtown Lansing establishment has a simple quick service menu of sandwiches and fried sides such as crinkle fries, onion rings and battered mushrooms. They are famous for their olive burger, but not being a fan of olives we went for the Turkey Reuben and the O'Gradys which is an open faced burger patty with cheese and chili. Both were served with fresh and crispy seasoned crinkle cut fries. The menu is no frills but it is a classic and fresh made to order fast food restaurant. We did go around 1pm when the downtown lunch rush was still going so had to wait a little but not bad. The dining room is small and old but adds to the charm. You might have to wait for a seat or grab one as soon as you go in before you head to the counter to order.

A great gem in downtown Lansing! We love olive burger and this is one of the best places to grab some. Service was topnotch and the owners of the place are the friendliest. Love the vibe of this place. It has the traditional set up, but its well-maintained and clean.

My son who attends MSU and I have been trying to make it to this place for some time now but it's been a challenge due to the hours they are open. Well today happened to be his birthday and when I asked him where he wanted to go this was his choice, and I have to say this kid knows how to pick them! The establishment is an icon of the community and rightly so! This place exudes character and that makes it even more special, OMG the dolls on the walls! The olive burger had been recommended to me by some friends and it was a great burger! My son had a regular Kewpee burger and we spilt an order of onion rings (perfectly fried) and some crinkle cut fries. We also spilt a Miami Burger and we both agreed that was the hit of the day! The menu mentioned that this burger had a "Food Network" contest and we both could understand why. The way the olive sauce and melted cheese incorporates into the beef crumble is an incredible combination of flavors. That combined with a perfectly grilled buttery bun makes this all blend perfectly together in a manner that we've never experienced before. We both agreed we would certainly go out of our way to experience a Miami burger again! Thanks for an excellent burger experience Watsons Kewpee Sandwich Shop, we will be back!

I like historic sandwich shops that serve basic American food, but well done. As soon as you walk inside Kewpee you are transported to the 1970s by the décor. Kewpee is known for the Olive Burger, so I had to try it. The Olive Burger is a burger with mayo mixed with olives slathered on top of the burger. I ordered the olive burger with fries. The mayo/olive topping gives the burger a unique flavor I certainly had not tasted before. But there was just too much of it, and the flavor dominated over the meat. The fries were good. I had an interesting conversation with a very nice server about Gettysburg, which was unexpected. An Ok rating overall.

This place was amazing! First time having an olive burger and boy was it delicious! Ordered the homemade chili and Miami burger with fries. Loved every bite and was impressed with the staff and they were so fun. Told them "this place was better than Burger King!" LOL they laughed and said "the dishes and mop are that way so get to it!" too funny. Can't wait to return to this place as they know how do to burgers right.

I love the original "Kewpee's Olive burger" what a meal, and a deal. Crinkle fries, a king olive burger, and a drink for around $14.00. Service is pretty good, fast, friendly and talkative. This is a burger joint with a lot of history and nostalgia, lots of items, including the famous "Kewpee doll(s)" and old Kewpee signage.

Fancy historical plaque for Kewpee. Place has been here for 100 years now and for good reason!

If you want corned beef or pastrami, greasy grocery store deli meat just doesn't cut it. Checking Yelp delis. I looked in every direction and decided to drive to East Lansing as my corned beef withdrawal pains were getting worse. Stateside Deli sits in a shopping plaza a few miles southeast from MSU. When we arrived both booths and tables were available just after the lunch rush. Just guessing, i'd say there are between 25-30 tables and booths. Even though I didn't need to, I studied the menu knowing that I would probably only get corned beef or pastrami. The soups however looked great as well. I ordered my corned beef extra lean partially as a test and mostly because that is how I like it. Served on toasted rye, that' is exactly how it came. My first bites were euphoric. It only got better. My wife ordered half a sandwich (tuna melt on wheat) along with matzah ball soup. She loved hers as well. I can tell because both the bowl and plate were empty when she was done. She will often not finish if the food is "just OK" Service was excellent and "seamless". One server saw my drink almost empty and quickly returned with another. Another server asked if we needed anything as she was walking by. Our server also kept checking with us to see if we needed anything or if we were enjoying our lunch. If this is the closest deli, so be it. We will be back as often as practical. Only drawback is the hour drive each way and approximately $28 worth of gas.

My roommate had to sacrifice her own dinner so the other could eat and I'm here scrambling to find her something hot and still open for delivery. Management was zero help- they immediately tried to chuck the Grubhub driver under the bus as "it's hard to get in contact with people who order about stuff like this and oftentimes the drivers end up dropping the orders because of it". You didn't even try, guys. You could have saved this with a text message or a phone call and you couldn't even do THAT. My roommate can't eat a "sorry" note, guys. After some talking, management authorized a full refund, which I suppose is the least they can do about this, and Grubhub also refunded the price of the sandwich and a five-dollar voucher for all the trouble.
