About a year ago I got quoted $1,400 by Midas to get my axel boots replaced on my Toyota yaris. I called him in desperation-- my parents had brought their cars to him before but I had never brought mine in, but I had heard great things. I left a message and a couple days later he called back and said I could bring in my car early in the morning so he could take a look, no appointment needed despite his crazy busy schedule. He let me know that the issue was not nearly as bad as I had been told and that he could do the job for half of what Midas had quoted me. This was my first experience with him and he has consistently shown how much he truly cares about doing right by people and taking care of their cars honestly and to the best of his ability. I feel like I could trust him with my life. When he retires eventually I will have to go into mourning. If you are not sure whether the wait for an appointment is worth it, ask yourself if you can afford to pay double whatever he will charge you to another mechanic who will not be nearly as thorough as he will be. Recently, when he had to refer me to another shop because I needed a service he doesn't provide, he asked me to still follow up and let him know how it went after the work was done, just out of the pure kindness of his heart. The communication wasn't helpful, and the attitude felt dismissive rather than solution-oriented. If you're going to charge that much for diagnosis, I would expect clearer answers or at least some guidance on next steps. It also felt like their focus has shifted since moving locations. There seemed to be a lot of attention on vintage and specialty vehicles, and less interest in helping someone with a standard daily driver. At this point, I'm getting a second opinion because I don't feel confident in the diagnosis or the value of the service provided.
