    Worth a Chai mocktail
    Payton H.

The tasting menu at Mediterranean Exploration company was one of my favorite dining experiences in Portland I've ever had. The atmosphere was lively and I loved the industrial, modern decor. I went on a busy Friday night and was sat right at my reservation time. Our server was personable and friendly. They had a small mocktail selection with creative options. I went with the "worth a chai", which was spicy, sweet, and tangy. The tasting menu was $75 each for two people and we got a total of 9 dishes and left full and with leftovers. Not one dish wasn't delicious and I enjoyed how each dish had an unexpected flavor or textural element to keep things interesting. All the ingredients felt fresh and the dishes were bright in color and taste. Despite the larger quantity of food, the meal overall felt well- balanced, healthy, and not too heavy or decadent. I keep thinking about the hamachi crudo that came with this amazing smoky eggplant that complemented the vinaigrette on the fish perfectly. The radicchio salad was addictingly good with the fruity burst of sweetness from the cherries. The hummus is insanely rich and pairs well with the thick, fluffy pita. I could keep going on about each dish, but these were my absolute standouts. I especially appreciated the timing of the dishes. New dishes came out right as we were finishing the last. I will be coming back here to try more of the menu.

Finally got a chance to come back again after so many years and happy to report that they may have gotten even better! Everything we got was sooo good. Great balance of flavors. Texture contrast was so nice too. We particularly love the Sesame Crusted Albacore Tuna and the Persian Chicken Meatballs. But you really can't go wrong. For two people, four dishes were perfect. The sharing model makes it so fun to try different things. Will definitely be back!

Amazing experience! Came with vegetarian friends. They both enjoyed vegetables dishes and we also enjoyed them very much!! Mushrooms dish and lamb chop are the best dishes of the night! Enjoyed finishing with Espresso martini!

I've heard a lot of good things about this restaurant and it did not disappoint. Definitely go online and make a reservation though because it does get crowded. The sweet potato's are a must order and I also loved the chicken meatballs and bacon wrapped dates. Cute ambiance in here too. Dimmed lights, might be good for a date but really any occasion.

We decided to celebrate our anniversary here and have no regrets! The restaurant is somehow both big but intimate. The lighting is fairly dim so if dark ambiance is not your thing you may want to skip. They do have individual tables but also a few tables of community seating. If that's not your thing you may want to request a solo table in your reservation or upon arrival. We made a reservation and happy we did because it was fairly busy when we were there on a Sunday night. We were promptly greeted by a very friendly hostess when we arrived. She quickly sat us. Our initial server was great. Offered to answer any questions on both the drink and food menu. We asked if we could know what's on the tasting menu and he gave a good outline but said he could say specifically because it changes. We did order the tasting menu and the food came out in perfect increments and there is A LOT of it (not complaining). Everything that was brought out, by various people, was explained. They also all offered to get us something if we needed so it felt like we were being really well taken care of. The lamb kebab was the standout of the night! I noticed after we got our last dish though that we were forgotten about, really our entire corner was. I saw our server clock out and it felt like no one was tasked with taking care of his tables after he left. A little disappointing considering up until that point the service and food was great! Still giving five stars because I'll chalk it up as a fluke all things considered. We definitely will be back to get some things we got on the tasting menu and to try some we didn't get!

Best new restaurant we've eaten at in a long time. The food was amazing, the cocktails innovative, and the service thoughtful. It was crazy busy but we never felt rushed and the courses were brought out in a well timed rhythm.

There are a few restaurants I have long heard of but not been to, that eventually I will get to try, that absolutely BLOW away my expectations. This was one of those experiences. We tried this spot with some friends last week, fully expecting an elevated dining experience. What we experienced was certainly that, but one that was both elevated and approachable. First off, the vibe of the place is awesome. Industrial chic that they have warmed up to make comfortable, with roll up garage doors for the nice weather... stunning. We tried some fantastic food, had a lovely time doing it, and were so pleasantly surprised with the price that we'll certainly be back sooner than we thought!

After a couple more visits, an update: Dining is better at the bar top. The bartenders are friendly and very attentive. Much more comfortable for 1 or 2 vs. a table. It is too crowded on the floor and chairs have a tendency to back into each other. Noise level more tolerable at the bar. HH is not great so you will end up ordering from the main menu. Mention you wish the falafels not to be overcooked as they have been rock hard from previous experiences. Service much improved.

Warm greetings when you first arrive and promptly seated. The staff pours you water and explains how the food is meant for sharing. So we did. 5 items of bacon wrapped dates, salmon belly, hamachi crudo, grilled octopus, and the tastiest of them all, the lamb chops. While waiting for our food we looked around and it is both rustic and elegant. Curtains flowing reminded me of Greece. Then food arrives and the staff explains what each item is, the hidden layers of flavor, and we go to town on the food. It was a great experience and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

We have elderly parents with mobility issues. I see the ramp outside to get in but noticed some stairs once you are inside to get to the dining area. Is this the only way up?

There are no stairs to access the dining room. The ramp out front is the only elevation before you enter the restaurant and from there the dining room is all on the same level.

Are there any gluten and dairy free options available?

We are considering having a birthday dinner here. Is there somewhere I can find an example of your tasting menu? Thank you!

    Do you need reservations?

Thanks for reaching out! While reservations are not required, they are strongly recommended. We always welcome walk-in guests, but at peak hours, at times the wait for a seat may be substantial.

    Hi do you take reservations?

Yes, they take reservations via Resy.

Have they restarted outdoor dinning and are there heaters?

Hi Candy! We have a heated tent to provide a comfortable place for our guests to enjoy a beverage…

I see there's a chef tasting menu option. Do we have to order that or can we order a handful of items for the table, tapas style?

You can order either. You dint have to stick with the Chef's tasting menu.

Is this a good place for a party of 10-15, and will they take a reservation?

I would say no to the party of 10-15 and yes to the reservations

It's a nice location and was quite busy on a Tuesday night. We were sat right on time for our reservation. The server recommended 5-7 plates for our party of 3 and let us know that plates come out as they are made (pretty standard). Despite this, there seemed to be no pacing to how dishes came out. All of our dishes came out rapid fire one after another to the point where we didn't have time to finish the small plates and didn't have room on the table. The food itself was largely okay, but nothing to write home about. The two biggest plates we got were the pastrami and the short rib. The pastrami was somewhat dry, though the mustard it was served with was delicious. The short rib was tough and in the rub had one slice that was way too strong and overpowered all the other flavors. The hummus with burnt ends was good from a hummus perspective but the ends were super salty. The cornbread was delicious and probably the favorite plate of the table and the cauliflower was a close second. All in all, a pretty disappointing experience. Maybe it was just a tough night there and we'll give it another try.

The young lady at the counter gave possibly the worst service I have experienced in a long time. She gave no acknowledgment, no recommendation, seemed bothered that we were there, no response when we said thank you multiple times. ZERO ENGAGEMENT! The place is also dirty and appears unkept. The outside seating area has trash and debris from the previous day...we were there right after open... needs to be swept. Doesn't appear like it has been pressure washed in a while either. Planters are smeared with dirt, concrete stained with food buildup and tables need a bath. The inside is just as bad, which starts at the front door. Front glass looks awful...smears, dirt, grime, and streaks galore. There are also signs peeling and tape residue left from signage that used to be present. Soda machine and bathrooms were also beneath expectations. You can't have a "thank you for supporting small business" sign if you aren't doing your part. I would love to support you in the future, BUT service and cleanliness must improve.

So it was a good value for a special occasion. I'll walk you through what we ate: First came their signature green olives with a little bowl for the pits. They had some little pickled red onions in with them. Soooo good! Then focaccia. It was a big hunk that we tore pieces off of and dipped in garlic olive oil. Those were standard with every meal. Now came the fun. The thing I love about tasting menus is you never know what's coming next! It's so much fun to be surprised! They started us off with a seasonal burrata with local strawberries, hazelnuts, fresh basil and a strawberry gastrique. Swoon-worthy! Next we were served the house version of Caesar salad. It came with a wedge of lemon to squeeze over the top. Yum! Next was the thinnest roasted asparagus I've ever eaten. I don't normally like asparagus but I really enjoyed this. It rested on a bed of some sort of puree (I forgot what they said it was). Next was corn ravioli. Sadly it was the only pasta included in this meal. I had been hoping to have another pasta dish or two. The ravioli was special though and not your normal filling, so that was nice. Then came roasted cauliflower on a bed of green goddess sauce. Tasty but I was feeling very healthy by then with all the veggies! (Couldn't they have replaced that with pasta? Sorry, I'm whining here). Our last savory dish was eggplant parm. It came with more focaccia. Again, I'd have loved pasta instead. Isn't that what one goes to an Italian restaurant for? Finally there were delicious, short, buttery Italian wedding cookies. But then our waiter surprised us with cannoli, for our anniversary! It sat atop Maryhill peach compote. Excellent! The service was impeccable. Our waiter was knowledgeable, personable and very attentive. We were also served by some other staff who did a great job as well. Good thing we've been married 42 years. If this was a first date where you want to get to know each other, it would be hard because it's pretty loud and the tables are crammed closely together. They really need a bigger space. We are looking forward to bringing friends and family here in the future.

My best friend and I shared a couple dishes which I can't fully recall but I know we had lamb and I believe a mezza type platter. However, they tried to accommodate us so much. However, the night was in our favor. As we started to order take out, a lady was kind enough to give up her table since she was eating alone. It was a small table for 3 people but the staff was sooo accommodating i have no words. They even gave free dessert to the lady who was kind. Then luck would have it, the table next to us never showed up for their reservation so they gave us that table. Finally, we ordered. Turned out, i also got the last shawarma too. Everything happens for a reason! We also got the Saudi chicken kabsa and cheesecakes. The biggest compliment i can give is when the food came, none of us talked for a good 5-7 mins and just sat there in heaven eating. The flavors were soo unique but yet so familiar. If this is Saudi food, i have been missing out. I need to explore more sub categories of middle eastern cuisine. Best bites in Portland for us and that's all i have to describe our experience. Finally, got the Nutella cheesecake and almond caramel cheesecake. I have to say, Nutella was good but easily a skip compared to almond and caramel. Just get 2 of those and you'll be happy. The cakes itself are light and not heavy. They were great end to a great meal. This is a family owned but family loved business.
