Beef Brisket and Diacan: I was trying to spit mine out without being obvious to my friend when I noted she was also chewing with a look of disgust on her face as she also had to go to the trash can! It was so fatty and gelatinous. Shanghai Noodles: edible. I asked for soy sauce, hot sauce, extra sweet/sour for crab Rangoon and mustard on printed directions. Over the years, I've been to Mee Sum Pastry about a dozen times for bubble tea. This week, I finally tried their food for the first time. They are incredibly slow, so be ready to wait (for bubble tea about 5-10 minutes and for food about 10-20 minutes). I took my food to go and was surprised to find that my pork entrée came with a side of rice, vegetables, as well as a small container of soup but there wasn't very much actual meat in it. The quality of the food was OK, definitely less flavourful compared to some of the Chinese restaurants in the international district. Because of it's convenience, I will likely come back to Mee Sum for bubble tea and lunch but only on days when I'm not in a hurry. Paid street parking is available nearby. read more

I've been to Mee Sum a few times now and I've always loved my experience here! I would give the food three stars; it's on the cheaper side and hits the spot when you're craving Asian comfort food. I've ordered the deluxe pork belly over rice and pineapple BBQ pork fried rice. The deluxe pork belly is flavorful and juicy and comes with a lot of rice. There's also a hard-boiled egg that comes with the dish that is really good. I feel like they don't give you as much quantity when you order to-go, though. The pineapple BBQ fried rice tastes a little plain. The pineapple flavor isn't very strong, but they give you an insane amount of rice! My friend got chicken wings and thought they were amazing, so I'll definitely have to give them a try next time. Service here is also very good. It seems like most of the staff are students and they'll be completely upfront and honest with you when you ask for their recommendations or opinions. Yesterday I ordered delivery from Mee Sum and I have been debating whether or not to give them 2 or 3 stars. The reason why I went with 2 is because my boyfriend who ate with me got sick. I am not and cannot imply that it is strictly from the food since I did not get sick, but I did eat less and this may be why I was spared. We ordered salt & pepper squid, sweet & sour pork, and BBQ pork appetizer slices. The total was around $27 dollars. My favorite of the three is the salt & pepper squid, but it's definitely not the best I've had. Chinatown has fed me a better version of this. The appetizer was not much and the meal did not come with rice which took me off guard. I believe if you want rice, it's a few dollars extra. I did not pay extra on the assumption that If I am paying 9 dollars for a dish, there is rice. I will give the food 5 stars. The food is very good and the portion is big. However the service was meh. I saw some similar comments below. There was one server that just pretty much ruin the restaurant. First, she didn't have patience and she wasn't so nice. It feels like she's in a hurry to go home. Well that was alright cause it was just a quick moment. Second, we forgot to take our order number and she came to us with a bad attitude, she didn't throw it at us but she didn't put it nicely either. After she left, my friend was like what makes her so pissed?? Third, we saw her talking to other customers v rude. Fourth, I understand Mandarin and she talked to her co-worker in Mandarin that "Why are there so many people during dinner time? I want to eat dinner." This review is only for the black milk tea with tapioca, the only thing I got here on my trip to Seattle. The cup is pretty big, and the total was only around $3.50! The milk tea is very silky and tastes like the tea I like at Saint Alp's Teahouse back in NYC -- except that place gives you half the milk for the same price, so Mee Sum's is a better deal. The tapioca is very soft and chewy, which is the best kind. The interior is pretty cute. I can see this being a great hangout for the college students at U. of Washington. There were a lot of manga books on the bookshelves. I also saw a lot of delicious Taiwanese items on the menu (like tomato and beef, etc.)... if I ever come back I will be sure to try out the other items. read more

It's nice to know that this place is still around, despite mediocre reviews. The food is pretty good, especially the popcorn chicken, and there's a good variety of bubble tea flavors to pick from. I'm just not a fan of how they're out of the mini boba when I come here and am craving them. That's disappointing. I took a sip of my friend's Japanese milk tea, and that was surprisingly good! I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. I'm not a huge, huge fan, but I come here often enough that it's better than just average for me. Typically I only come here because of their pastries and bubble tea. Particularly, I like one of their specials: The Red Bean Smoothie. It's on their specials menu and I haven't found any other place that sells red bean smoothies on the ave so that's what makes Mee Sum special and unique, at least to me. Not only that, but they also sell the hombows, and other breads which are pretty good as well. I've ate here a couple times though. I've tried their pork belly with rice, and also their chow fun. First off, the pork belly with rice is very cheap for the amount of food you get. I would definitely say that there needs to be more pork belly compared to rice, but then that would probably increase the price by a lot. It's nice that they give you a decent amount and an egg as well. The chow fun is pretty typical so if you're not super picky, you'll probably like it. My first time having chow fun was here and so I thought it was pretty tasty. As said earlier, I love the red bean smoothie. It's absolutely delicious because it's not too sweet so you know you're working with regular red beans. It's cold, smooth, and just has that great red bean punch to it. I've also tried their apple milk tea, which wasn't too bad, but it wasn't my favorite. The hombows are really something though. There's no other place on the ave to get these and they are best right when they come out of the oven. There is place in Pike Place that actually sells these hombows and the hombows from Mee Sum are actually from the place in Pike Place. BBQ pork is probably the most popular one and the best savory one. The curry beef has a strong curry taste and isn't my favorite in a pastry. I really like the pineapple bun though. It's sweet and fluffy, and just so yummy. My next favorite would have to be the coconut bun. The coconut filling is to die for. They also have red bean sesame balls, which I like because they are so round and bigger than normal. However, definitely not enough red bean filling inside to be satisfied. Also, these need to be warm, otherwise they don't taste very good. One day we ordered a pineapple bun and found a piece of hair in it though. The customer service was great though. The manager came and gave us our money back AND gave us a new pineapple bun free of charge. She apologized saying that they don't make the pastries here, they get them from Pike Place ready to bake. For that, customer service was good. Remember that there is an extra small charge on credit cards for purchases under 5$. So bring cash if you decide to only buy one bubble tea. Or, get a pastry with your bubble tea and you can raise it over the 5$ limit. Lastly, they sell almond cookies and moon cakes on their display case. However, I have never really seen anybody buy cookies or moon cakes from here. I question how long the cookies have been on display for... One day out of curiosity I decided to get an almond cookie though. We ordered one, and the worker seemed really shocked, and almost didn't even know where the cookies were. Hence we figured that nobody really buys them. The place is known for their food, hombows, and milk tea. We got our cookie and were hoping to taste some almond goodness. However, the cookie was pretty gross in my opinion. It didn't have good flavor, and it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. No surprise there though. The selection of flavors is good with a few unique blends which they call their signature flavors. I got the Black Mint Tea with boba and lychee jelly, it had a very strong mint flavor, personally like strong mint tea but know it would probably be a turn off for most. The boba was good, it had the right bounce and it had no hard center, the lychee jelly was firm and had the right mouth feel with a burst of sweetness. The service was slow; being a rainy day there wasn't a lot of foot traffic in and I was the only order till a couple more patrons placed drink orders. Would have been almost $10, if not over, if I got tapioca probably. The mill tea was okay. Didn't quite hit the spot compared to other places. Not bad, but not the best either. If you get the popcorn chicken, try to not order to-go or else it will lose all its crispiness. By the time I got back to my desk, which isn't even a 5 minute walk from the store, my chicken did not have any crunch whatsoever. I also want to mention that the wait for my chicken was pretty long. Perhaps 15 minutes. And the amount they give you is not worth the price. The flavoring is better than from Oasis, but it still doesn't seem to be the same typical popcorn chicken as other bubble tea stores. Most likely will not order the popcorn chicken again, and definitely not to-go. If you order actual meals for-here, they seem to come out reasonably quick. Let me preface by saying that I've ordered sesame chicken from here before (via uber eats) and it was absolutely amazing! Loved every last bite! This time, I decided to order delivery directly through the restaurant (to save a few bucks) and apparently the driver was given an incorrect address. He calls me and starts yelling at me after I tell him the correct address. He then begrudgingly agrees to still bring the food. Fast-forward 20 minutes. The driver calls me again saying he can't find my address; I ask him what address he's at and he mis-heard my address AGAIN. Even after I repeated back to him multiple times. He then proceeds to yell some more and eventually tells me he's not going to deliver it anymore and hangs up the phone. Keep mind, I already paid for my food, so I was understandably angry when the delivery driver is yelling at me for a mistake they made. I came here on Wednesday afternoon. During the Covid social distancing, they have a couple long tables separating the staff from customers. There are 2 long benches to sit while you wait for food. When I first got there people were practicing social distancing well but later when I returned it started getting busy and people were only 2 feet apart. The key phrase is I had to return. Not a good thing. I picked up my food and walked down the street to find any place to sit so I could take a few bites. I started with the hot & sour soup which comes free. I really enjoyed that. My inSO drove by and found me and we drove several blocks so he could do an errand. I opened my box started eating the pork chop curry spaghetti. The flavor was overpoweringly all curry potatoes and noodles. I love curry and potatoes but it was just gross and mushy over the spaghetti and it did not go well together. I have had a baked porkchop spaghetti with tomato sauce and curry at other Hong Kong restaurants before and they were delicious. The execution here was just not right. After several minutes I was searching for meat. Were there slices of pork perhaps? Nope. They forgot the porkchop entirely. Really? So we had to go back up the Ave. I had to wait over 10 minutes so they could make another pan of grossness and add the porkchop. It looked big at first. The porkchop was thin and tiny. It was mostly bone and breading. I paid close to $13 for it. The crab rangoons were terrible overchopped imitation crab with a mushy overmelted and overmixed cream cheese texture. The wrapper was also wrong. Instead of a crispy wonton shell it was a heavy flour and water dough. Very disappointed. Things used to be excellent. What happened? I ordered pork congee with century egg (on doordash) and was so disappointed. There was still fur on the pork and I had to remove it. Kind of gross. The second and last time I will ever order from here -- pork belly with rice. I have been here a few times before. The menu is large and ths food and tea is consistently yummy. However last night I ordered delivery and was pretty dissapointed. Usually when I eat here I order honey walnut shrimp and it comes with rice and brocolli. But when I ordered it online it comes with only the shrimp? Why for the same price (which is quite high) you get less food...? In addition to that they did not include straw with bubble tea so i was not able to drink it properly. It wasn't too sweet and wasn't just filled with a lot of ice. The matcha tasted absolutely perfect. The drink came out to be $3.75 with tapioca. However, I also ordered a pineapple bun which was okay. The egg crust part on the top was too hard to eat and the bottom of the bun was also hard.
