One of the best places in Tucson to get some good Chinese food. The lunch specials are absolutely incredible. I always get the Mongolian beef on lo mein, which paired with the egg rolls and soup at the price it is, is just a killer deal. Outside lunch hours, I'll often place an order of some beef lo mein to go on my way home from work. I am definitely going to be trying some new things, the reviews are very helpful! The service is super friendly and quick. The family special is a really nice deal as well, very much worth it. Also, the hot and sour soup is absolutely to die for. Mei Mei is another place that provides authentic Chinese food. It might not look fancy from outside but definitely worth a visit. They refurbished in July 2016, and the interior looks bright and modern. My favorite dishes are the roasted duck (very flavorful and crispy), and the fried pork chop (only on the Chinese menu :D). Family friendly place with an array of children seating items available. I have been coming for 30 years and never have been disappointed. Family owned and operated. No staff turnover. In recent years it has undergone a major remodel with an updated interior and bathrooms but I do feel it lost its Chinese authenticity you used to get upon entry. :-( Nonetheless, it is always a hit for an affordable lunch menu from 11am-3pm and equally affordable family dinner options ($10.99/person= soup, fried wontons, egg rolls and an entree per person). To answer the question you're probably asking in your head: Yes! This place is good! Bonus: Every time I've placed an order it's always been ready in 10 mins. I know, I know! But I only gave them 3 stars! Let me explain. This place's "good dishes" are awesome! I highly recommend their Lo Mein and Crab Puffs. Their standard dishes like the beef broccoli and spicy beef are great. Their dishes are pretty flavorful, especially in comparison to similar restaurants nearby. However, some of their dishes are a bit unconventional. Their Kung Pao chicken is basically just chicken and celery. I noticed that it some dishes they tend to replace the traditional Chinese vegetables with celery. Not a big deal, but I love my vegetables and when I order Chinese I'm hoping for them. The ratio of vegetables to meat also tends to be very veggie heavy. But not enough to send me away, I guess! I've ordered takeout from this restaurant probably over 10 times now so clearly I like it! We yelped Mei Mei and this turned out to be a great place. Really a hidden gem. They get the extra star because they truly do have excellent customer service. The place is really clean and smells like food when you walk in. Very appealing to the senses. The food is delicious and a great value for what you get. The flavors really stood out to me from your ordinary chinese food plate. Somehow the same ol mongolian beef seemed superior in flavor and texture. Even the cuts of veggies in the food seem to be well thought out and carefully sliced, NOT all chunky and just thrown together. The egg drop soup was surprisingly satisfying. Trust me, I dont usually get it but they dont allow substitutions so I had no choice. It ended up being one of my favorite parts of the meal. Overall, my second visit here has got me thinking this is pretty much the spot for me now for chinese food in town (of course does not beat out P.f. Changs or something like that). We started with egg rolls. Not good, doughy and cold in the middle. Asked for mustard, and got packets. This was not a great beginning. Then the main dishes came out, spicy seafood with onions and fried tofu with an incredible array of proteins and veggies. OMG, what great food. I hadn't planned on getting carryout but since I had to make a stop at Safeway, opted to get some lunch to go. The restaurant is small, and old looking inside. A fresh coat of paint and some wax on the floor could do wonders. Also a machine in the entrance where you put your thumb to discover your "sex power" kind of turned me off. But I was already there, so went ahead and ordered. They have lunch specials for about $7.00, they include soup, eggroll, entree, and steamed or fried rice. I ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken, and she offered to give an extra eggroll instead of the soup. I prefer fried rice and there was no extra charge (some places do charge extra for fried rice). Anyway, my wait was about 10 minutes which I didn't think was too bad. Usually Sweet and Sour chicken comes with green peppers, onions and some pineapple chunks. There was no green peppers, onion or pineapple. Not sure if they just forgot or if this is how it normally comes. Anyway, there were about 8-10 medium size pieces of chicken. The flavor was a little different than what I usually experience but in a good way. I really enjoyed the sweet and sour sauce which did not overwhelm the chicken. The fried rice was equally as flavorful. She did give me 2 eggrolls which were really springrolls (I like these better anyway) and they were good too. I wish they had been crunchier, not sure if they got soft because they were sitting in the rice or if they always come that way. Could be 2.5 stars. Came here for lunch because I didn't want to go to a fast food place. Read the reviews and thought I'd give it a try. Update: It is no longer a $5.99 lunch special, it is a $6.59 lunch special. And to answer Mark's review, yes, their egg rolls are always soft and not so crunchy. I ate mine fresh and the only crunchy parts were the ends. They are veggie egg rolls, by the way. I ordered the kung pao chicken. It comes with diced carrots, water chestnuts, peanuts, bamboo shoots, and celery. The celery right away was a give away. To me, celery in Chinese food is a cheap filler choice by the chef and the flavor of celery does not complement any Chinese flavor at all. I do not like it when bamboo shoots are diced instead of sliced. And although it wasn't a tiny amount, the amount of water chestnuts and peanuts was not generous and a bit on the scant side. The sauce was soupy, not saucy. The dish was literally swimming in soup. Kung pao chicken is also supposed to be spicy. It was a little bit spicy. It came with the aforementioned egg rolls, and I opted for the lo mein instead of the fried rice. The lo mein hardly had any cabbage in it. The flavor was OK, nothing exciting, though. My recommendation is if you want to try this place, go with one of the apparently successful entrees that are mentioned in the other reviews, just don't choose the kung pao chicken. Service was very quick. I was the only one there at opening and I waited only five minutes. The chef's wife was very friendly. What astounds me is that she told me that Mei Mei has been there for 22 years. I thought that for a business to be there for that long they must have good food. This was probably the worst Chinese food I've had in my life. The crab puffs had no crab and the cheese inside was cold, rice was undercooked and crunchy and tasted of soy sauce and not much else. The pepper beef just tasted of salt. The garlic chicken just tasted of boiled chicken. All the food was bland and flavorless--the dumplings literally tasted of nothing. Worst of all was it cost $50 for three of us to eat. Panda Express has more flavor and meat in its dishes and thats not even real Chinese food. read more

However, it is still one of my favorites because of the location but over the months I've begun to realize that this restaurant lacked a variety of food, specifically tofu. 1 tofu dish? Really? I ordered the lunch special which is a great deal at $4.99, you get a meat entree, rice, soup or an egg roll. I ordered the BBQ Pork and some szechuan Black Bean Tofu. The BBQ Pork was nothing like the picture, it contained the really fatty pieces and was dry. However, it was kind of good but just not what I was expecting. The tofu was extra saucy and starchy. It was okay but again, not what I expecting. However, service was great, the lady had some kick to her step and pricing was decent as well. We were welcomed right after we entered and seated immediately. The waitress took our drink order immediately, Hot tea for me and water for my wife. Both were brought out very quickly. We then started to peruse the menu since we hadn't been here before. Some friends have been and said the food was good and Yelp rates it pretty high, so we took a chance. The place is very clean and that tells me a lot about an eating establishment. There were only a couple of customers but according to most of the reviews the place never seems to be busy. Seems weird since it is easy to get to and the food isn't bad. When the waitress returned we ordered Pot Stickers and my wife ordered the Dragon Phoenix meal which has Chicken, Shrimp and various veggies. I ordered the Hot & Sour soup and the Kung Pao Chicken. Shortly after we placed our order the pot stickers showed up. They were very good. My Hot & Sour soup was also brought out. While the taste was good, and spicy, it was lacking substance and no crispy noodles were offered with the soup. It also had no chunks of Tofu, and the things that were there were few. The bowl was half full of liquid when I finished the soup. Tasty but disappointing. Our main dishes arrived with steamed rice. I want to note here that our waitress didn't seem to be very conversant in English which may have contributed to the fact that we weren't asked if we wanted steamed or brown rice. She was nice and friendly, but the meal might have been a little better if we had been able to communicate a little more easily. I had been tasting my tea and it had a funny taste that I couldn't quite put my finger on, almost like it might be tasting like the residue of one of the food dishes. I really wish I could be sure, but the tea wasn't very good... maybe it was the brand of tea. They don't serve hot green tea which is my favorite when eating Asian food, so slightly disappointed. Both of our entrees were pretty tasty, but my Kung Pao Chicken really needed more peanuts which is a main feature of this dish. I liked the taste of the chicken in my dish better than the chicken in my wife's dish. I really liked the taste of the shrimp in the Dragon Phoenix dish though. In the end we weren't offered a dessert, and I think it's simply a result of a lack of knowledge of English. Over-all the experience was pleasant but nothing memorable. After reading several reviews that said this was the best Chinese food they had ever eaten I really have to wonder how much Chinese food the reviewer has ever had and where they have eaten it. When I spend over $30 for a meal, I expect some very good food, not average food which is what this is... average. We might return, but not if we can find a something better. read more

I found this place after visiting the St. Mary's hospital across the street. It looked very gritty, dirty and the interior is dated terribly, add to that, a very rude, discourteous greeter who took my order. 15 mins later, she hands me a bag saying, "Beef" is ready. I told her I don't eat Beef, that I ordered chicken. She goes on & on, never wanting to admit error. Well, 15 mins later, I get my chicken/veggies. I eat in the hospital & surprisingly it's pretty good. Not too greasy, great portions. I can't vouch for the other menu but I liked it. What a gem. This place is smaller and hidden in the Safeway shopping center off St. Marys. I have literally never seen it till recently hearing about it and had to try it. Customer service and food is exceptional. If you're looking for a nice, quiet spot to head for lunch this is perfect. They have lunch specials that have a decent selection of entrees and come with 2 spring rolls, egg flower soup and either white rice, fried rice, or lo-mein. The lo-mein is delicious. Everything tastes fresh and is cooked with a low/moderate amount of oil so it isn't too heavy. Give this place a try and you won't be disappointed. read more

As I said before, I have given it a second try. I am still not recommending Mei Mei for good Chinese. Tried the twice cooked pork this time and the fried wontons as appetizer. Once again I did have good service, prompt and friendly. The wontons were crispy but the filling was very bland. The twice cooked pork was hot (read freshly cooked and stove hot) and the vegetables were still crispy (good) but more veggies than meat and definitely not spicy (it is listed as a hot and spicy dish.). As least it wasn't horribly over salty as my last meal here was, but not very good flavor. It had always been mediocre and nothing to really brag about.. we gave it another chance and decided to dine in this time. The interior had be remodeled to a more simplistic design. The interior of this space is so nice and clean. There were a few chatty tables and it seemed like a nice place to go to eat. The food was ok, not super flavorful. No fresh veggies either, despite the fact it was veggie fried rice. (It just had small bits of dehydrated or frozen veggies.) They serve two distinct menus - one Americanized Chinese food and the other traditional Cantonese Chinese food. I've never had the Americanized Chinese food there, but the Cantonese food is SO GOOD!!! We got the beef brisket stew (hot pot) and the stir fried choy sum. I grew up in Hong Kong and this is the type of food we would eat out when I was a kid, and the dishes taste EXACTLY like home. It's really hard to find Cantonese food in Tucson (if you don't count dim sum), especially ones that are authentic and actually good, and I'm so happy this place exists! read more
