There is something about a hand-pattied burger served on a store-bought bun. I think the juices from the meat soak into those buns more quickly, making the bread portion of the burger almost indistinguishable from the burger itself; the real role of the bread in the burger/bun equation is to ensure that the user doesn't burn his/her hands on hot meat (please to note: this is the first time I've alluded to someone burning themselves on hot meat, but likely not the last). Literally pass by this bar on my way home from work almost every day. Not going to lie, I thought it looked like a total sh*t box upon first seeing it. A couple coworkers decided they desperately needed to try it, and I reluctantly agreed. WOW WOW WOW, looks can be deceiving. This little NorthShore bar is for all your old-school tavern needs. They serve the food in little baskets and serve tater tots instead of fries. The burgers are what people rave about and they should be raving about them because they are great! This place also frequents the male after-work crowd, but you will find families in here for a quick, cheap bite to eat. If I remember correctly, they serve some beers in cans and always with a smile. We stopped into Meiers before heading to Northwestern for a basketball game. We walked into the hole-in-the-wall and found a little table in the back corner. Took in the atmosphere. Prepped ourselves for some good burgers. We sat and sat and sat... seriously a good 30-40 minutes before we were even greeted. The waitress took our drink orders and did not return for another good 20 minutes with drinks. After that, she made us wait another 10 minutes before taking our orders. YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME, RIGHT? At this point, we were annoyed, but telling ourselves that the food will be so good that it'll make up for it. NOT. SO. MUCH. Burgers were good but no better than IN N OUT or Five Guys. Another negative (sorry, Debbie Downer over here today folks), CASH ONLY. We gathered cash from our table and went to pay. The owner was manning the cash machine and was very impatient with us. He kept yelling at us that there wasn't enough. (SERIOUSLY?) He also did not let us pay one at a time (there were 4 of us) using cash. He reprimanded us while having a conversation with a buddy. Really, dude? Seriously, disappointing. I will never come back here and discourage anyone else to. Terrible service, bad management and absolutely NO customer service. For my first time here, I'm not impressed. I hate it when places serve food but then don't care about the quality AT ALL. Everything came on styrofoam plates which just seems lazy; just buy plastic baskets and line them, its a much better presentation. The calamari was greasy & rubbery. The burgers were ok. The grilled ham and cheese had one measly slice of cheese and came out lukewarm. All of us got tots, but each of us only had about 8 tots on our plate. I dont know if that is customary or they were just being cheap with the portions tonight. Also, the waitress seemed bothered to be serving us because she would rather go sit and chat with a table of regulars that she knew. I have never gotten food so fast. Seriously, from the time I walked in, to the time I finished my food, only 12 minutes elapsed. Definitely good if you're in the neighborhood, need food and don't have time or a whole lot of money. If you come in here thinking you'll be blown away by this "restaurant" you will have problems because this place is clearly a bar that isn't trying to be a culinary masterpiece. The menu is small, mostly sandwiches but then surprises like shrimp dinners and some sides. Wow this place is terrible!! Read the reviews on yelp and decided to try it out on a Friday with friends. I am not sure how anyone would rave about the service. We arrived and sat down in a corner (maybe that was the problem) and waited for the waitress - yeah there was only one. Maybe she had an off night but seriously, we had to wait for her to come back and get us drinks. When we ordered we were never quite sure if she got our order or not. A couple of times we had to order again because she forgot our drinks. Maybe we got sub-par service since we were not regulars. Food was not that great but it was cheap - and was disappointed when a vegetarian friend order tots and got about 15 on a paper plate and they were not that good, If you want good tots and a decent quantity go to Dick's River Road House on Milwaukee or buy a bag of Ore-Ida and make them yourself. I don't mind the dive bar atmosphere and was not expecting much in ambiance but this place is filthy. It looked like it needed a good cleaning - the windows need to be washed and the bathroom was absolutely disgusting. All 5 of us that visited gave it a one star and would never return again. Most perfect of dive bars, it's a package liquor store as well, has wood paneling and tasseled roman shades, is dark enough that it takes awhile for your eyes to adjust upon entering, has very attentive staff and is teeming with regulars. It was my first time here, but obviously it is a fixture in the Wilmette neighborhood for many years. It's a little run down bar & grill. Food is served on paper plates and disposable silverware. Sandwiches and drinks are good and prices are decent. There isn't anything special on the menu but always draws a crowd. After doing a little fly fishing in the cornburbs, I was driving back with my friend and it was time for a beer. We came across this little place and pulled in. Being it was late afternoon, it was open, but only a few people were eating. We bellyed up to the bar and placed a beer order. FYI...no credit cards....only cash. Went here last night for a cheap night out, and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere was great. Our waitress was very nice and very attentive. The onion rings were fantastic. My boyfriend got the enormous Dab, and I was happy to be able to get a Schlitz. The place wasn't too loud even with both of the TVs in the bar area playing basketball. We were still able to carry on a quiet conversation in the corner. The menu is simple, but anything fancier wouldn't fit with the vibe of the place. We went on one of the first cold days in November, and the heat could have been turned up a little higher, but that's the only reason they didn't receive the full five stars from me. If I could give them a 4.5 that would be spot on. We'll definitely be going back. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover! Meier's Tavern is a true treasure that is a Wisc bar south of the boarder. The inside reflects what the place is, somewhere to go for a beer and a bite. Ever since I have been of age, I have gone to Meier's for a hot sandwich with a side of extra tots and a cold draft beer. This place has absolutely no frills, food is on Styrofoam Plates and till just recently your ketchup came in only packets on the table. I know this goes against your gut reaction, but I always order a nice large Dab and some tots to start the night of getting caught up with family or friends. The patty melt is one of the best if not the best around and you can't order anything but tots as a side. While you wait you can take in the history of beer advertisements the adorn the walls. You'd think you'd be sitting with a bunch of bikers or folks who are rough around the edges. More times than not you'll see families, guys grabbing a beer before they head home from the office, or the local beer league softball team. Meier's is a Cash Only operation but thankfully just outside the front door is an ATM should you forget. If you need a break from everything in the area and want a great simple meal and one heck of a deal for the area, stop in and you'll be surprised. Only a few of these gems are still around the North Shore but this one has stood the times and will continue. (Side note, they sell your basic hard alcohol in a variety of sizes behind the cashier and when I asked what quantities of beer they sell in cans I was told "1 to a 1,000 cans" I simply wanted 24 but it made me think!) read more

It's a cash only institution about a quarter mile east of the Wilmette Golf Course and a quarter mile west of the Edens. As other reviews, it's definitely a towney bar. You'd half expect it filled with the after work crowd, the round of golf group, families, or the women's league of your local church. It's that type of place. No worries here as the DAB is cold, the food served on styrofoam, and waitresses you dang well better treat like you mother. No seriously, they'll call ya 'hun' and 'sweetie pie.' Or maybe that's just me because at the tender age of of 'closer to 30 than 21' I get carded like a local, Loyola Academy sophomore and get the special sort of treatment. I'm really torn about how to rate this place. It is really such a dive that it is almost cute. This place is such a throwback that it could be Archie Bunker's bar. Nothing fancy here, just a blue collar bar with your basic beer drinking crowd. Walk on in and seat yourself. Take a choice of some good ol' brews. Not really any of the crafty stuff. Order yourself up real Ameericaan food, like burgers, grilled cheese and of course, tater tots. I had me some grilled ham and cheddar on rye with a side of tots, served on a Styrofoam plate. we where, as always looking for an interesting place for dinner close to the hotel. Meiers looked interesting and the reviews seemed interesting. Got right in and sat at a table in the bar. Dive bar would be correct very cool interior and decor. Watress came quickly brought back very cold mugs of beer. Ordered the wings to start. Came out hot from the fryer and where tasty. Asked for hot souse as they came with BBQ. We where presented with a bottle of Tabasco? Oh well the wings where good. Moved on to the recommended burgers, 1 w tots, 1 fry's. Fry's where under cooked. Burgers where ordered Med rare and came out cooked perfectly. This is a cool burger place with a friendly bar crowd. They do not accept credit cards but have an ATM inside. Dinner and a bunch of beers for 2 under $50. If you are looking for a 5* steak joint keep driving. I was a regular a long time ago and then after a long hiatus I was back again, but on a perhaps once or twice a month basis. Not much has changed, except for owners. The interior is left as-is which I think adds to the charm, its a mix of 50's through the late 90's. The parking is very good, location as well, the crowd is an interesting mix of wealthy and not so wealthy - all there for the dive atmosphere, priced fairly drinks, the classic tater tots, and sort of gruff wait staff. I first came here with my Father around the time I turned of age. He brought me because it was one of his hangouts as a younger man and wanted to share some history. This place is a real landmark, the food is simple and yummy, the size of the bar and beers offered distinguish it from ever being regarded as a "dive" in my books. What makes this place especially interesting is how they sell package liquors to-go. I am not sure how their liquor license allows for this, but it is very cool! Terrific dive of a place where you can get as good as a greasy burger on dark rye, with tater tots, and a DAB beer (a little DAB will do you) to wash it down... It's as good as you can get anywhere!!!... I've been coming here for forty years (thats 40 years as at the time if this review). It doesn't get any better than this, the iconic Meier's Tavern... It's a "local" place where Wilmette residents went when Wilmette was a "dry" village. It's been here a long time and the place is filled with memories of burger & beer nastalgia for countless people, me included, and I hope the tradition stands for a long time to come! My grandfather was there when it wS a speak easy in the mid 1920s, and my family has been there through their changes. I love to watch the bartenders. I have been going to Meiers Tavern for years. It's in a old farmhouse. The food is good and the service is great. The hamburgers are on the better side. The food prices are on the cheaper side and the alcohol beverages are average. The parking is pretty good. I haven't had any problems with finding a parking space. This is the only place I know of that has Dab on tap. This is a cash only place and use styrofoam plates which is probably done to keep prices down. I definitely will be going back. read more

If you're looking for a super casual hangout spot, this is perfect. Cheap, tasty comfort food, with huge portions. Mostly beer options, but essentially all shots are $3! Jameson for $3! You can't find that kind of deal anywhere. They should have that advertised at the top of their website, it would bring in so many people. Friendly staff, although you're only able to pay in cash which is a pain. They do have an ATM there which helps, but you have to pay the fee. read more
