I would like to start of with a disclaimer that I really like Meijer. Just not so much this one, which happens to be the one I grew up with. Yes, this once-great place where I formed fond memories of rising Sandy the penny pony has gone downhill. Plenty of other reviewers have touched upon most of this stores more blatant pain points, so I will limit my review to some pet peeves of mine that haven't really been pointed out yet. The average age of the customers at this Meijer is now approx 76 years old. Just something to consider if you prefer to shop with anything resembling a normal speed. Be prepared to get stuck frequently in the aisles between multiple electric riding carts that are being piloted seemingly aimlessly. Also, you should fully expect that the person in line in front of you will have no idea how to use the self-checkout lane they unwittingly got in line for--and that the store employees will be too overwhelmed with other customers to assist them. You'll have to painstakingly teach them how to use the machine, just for them to forget everything you taught them about that damnfangled modern contraption before the next time they shop. Aside from all that, this Meijer is rather ancient and dirty compared to some of the other area stores. Even though it's a bit further drive for me, I far prefer the Meijer on 13 Mile in Madison Heights. Really the only comparative saving grace to this Royal Oak Meijer is their superior craft beer selection--which earns it a second star. read more

Thank you to all the employees for working long hours to keep items on the shelves and for your positive attitudes! I was in this store on Saturday afternoon and of course it was a zoo! Every employee asked me if there was something they could help me find. The store was a complete wreck with empty shelves, items in the wrong place, boxes everywhere and people. What a mess!!! The store is poorly ran!!! I just don't understand with COVID-19 and more people are shopping they have no staff and the staff they have in management is ridiculous!!! About one out of 10 people have an idea of what's going on in the store. Nobody wants to help or it's not dirty pertinent but the management is nonexistent!!!!!!!! I'm in the store I waited over 20 minutes to see a manager and they never came!!! Nobody seems to care what's going on they don't stock any items the place is just a mess!!! read more

I am always able to find what I need at this Meijer. It has a great layout. I really like the split aisles. They always have deals going on! My favorite is when they do the interchangeable 10 for 10 deal on various items. Per usual though, there are a lot of registers but most of them are not open. That's okay though. I really do prefer coming to this Meijer as opposed to other Meijer locations or even going to Kroger. read more

Had a very strange incident happen the day before Christmas. Today, 12/24/20 I was questioning the price of a item I wanted to purchase. one of the staff managers there by the name of Kathy, replied, and my reply was Lady please, She told me she was not a Lady. So I had to return a item at the service counter, she kindly went over to one of the clerical staff, and was telling her of the incident and was laughing about it. How RUDE. I was at the other end of the counter and I heard it. And others heard it as well. My question is if shes not a lady what was she trying to say. Management???? I've been a loyal customer here since 1998 and was very happy seeing their increased selection of organic foods and enjoying the Mperks savings. We did 90+% of our grocery shopping at this store not just because of its convenient location between our home and work place, but also because of the welcoming atmosphere and perceived value and diversity of their merchandise (including exploring their clearance section and buying stuff I didn't need but the price was 'too good'). I have to say that something has changed in the last 12 months and especially since April or May of this year. The friendliness of the staff that made me feel like family is pretty much gone. I still recognize some familiar faces but many are gone. The new cashiers rarely greet you and seem annoyed if you ask a question. On one instance their credit card reader was giving an error which made the checkout painfully long given the already long line. The door security system randomly beeps and the clerk there seemed lost having to check my 20+ bags, until he noticed the alarm being triggered while nobody was passing... he then suggested I tried going through again and, of course, there was no beep... While, for convenience, I am still doing some shopping here, we are largely switching to Kroger's or Nino Salvaggio's for most of it... read more

just drove through the rain to return bottles and grocery shop. The bottle return is closed unexpectedly. I asked the greeter about it and he directed me to some cashiers who could call someone to open up a machine. They were not interested in helping and said nothing could be done. they suggested I return tomorrow. The greeter seemed puzzled by this which I take to mean that they could have done something and decided not to. I tried to call the store manager from my car but got a recording telling me that the customer service desk was closed. I was trying to reach the manager in charge. So no one is in charge? Seems to me that the customer service desk should be open while the store is open. you know...customers and all. this is on the heels of trying to buy a birthday cake from the bakery last week but not being able to do so because no one would come to the bakery. I called the store and they paged someone but I had to leave to return to work eventually. Don't trouble yourselves. I can take my business elsewhere. read more

The store was well stocked, good selection, nice produce and the store was clean.... But the employees are going out of their way to cause problems. I was in line for the 7-10 aisles self checkout and there were 3 old ladies and a young mom with a mountain of groceries. At first I didn't think it would be so bad... 20 minutes later I was thinking of ditching a few items so I could go to the 12 items or less isle. I was bored and I hear this woman talking about how some of her friends were fur-lowed and making 25 dollars an hour for sitting at home and that she'd tried to get fur-lowed but nothing was working. That's when I first notice Erma (forgive me if my spelling was off). She was an elderly African american woman maybe in her 50s or 60s. She was just sitting around talking while the old people struggled to buy stuff and the line was half of the length of the store. She was just standing around complaining instead of helping the old ladies through. So, 10 minutes later one of the old women is done and moves to the end of the checkout to bag her stuff and I move into her lane. She says, "Hey, why are you in my lane." I'd said, "I've been in line for 30 minutes and I need to get home soon. You've already help me up for about 20 and I want to be done,"" Erma comes over and does something so I have to stop checking out and says, "You need to go to the back of the line." I'd said, "I just finished waiting in line for 30 minutes, there is no way I am going to the back of the line. I'd be more likely to go to another store than to do that." She says, "That's not my problem'. I said, "Turn your name tag around." "It's Erma," she said as she turned the name tag around. Fortunately the young mom with the grocery mountain finished, so I move to her lane. I start checking out and Erma comes up and says, "When you're done, move that bar down so that you can let the next customer start while you are bagging your groceries. I plop my credit card into the slot and start bagging my groceries and grab my credit card. I was really pissed off and I didn't grab the receipt. Erma comes up and says, " Sir you didn't pay." I was under the impression that she was full of shit and kept walking a few steps. This manager lady comes over and said the same thing. I'd told her that I did and I went back to check the machine and sure enough she was right. It looks as if when you put the bar down it doesn't allow you to pay for the groceries. Normally when you put the credit card in for a minute and bag like I normally do it automatically just does the payment. So, I paid and then left the building. Then I called the corporate office. They seemed nice enough, the director of the store seemed pretty nice too. I'm going to raise it to a 2 star because of her. Anyway the trip was a total nightmare, my grandpa is in the hospital, my girlfriend is moving to another state because she's gotten a two hundred thousand dollar job offer, my work is doing layoffs and after all that I come in here and get held captive by a woman who is sabotaging her job because she wants to be fur-lowed. I'm very angry with this specific store and I don't plan on going back. read more

I'm regular at Meijer. I shop there for three reasons: great prices, great variety, and Meijer is based in in Michigan. I'm a diehard shop local guy. The Royal Oak store is one of the older stores in the area, but it is has been remodeled and is well maintained. The store has a very nice deli, bakery and butcher. The fresh fruit and vegetable section is well stocked with a variety of locally grown items. The deli is well stocked with enormous selection of cold-cuts and cheeses, as well as prepared foods and rotisserie chickens. Great selection of the basics: canned soups, mixes, condiments, etc.. The meat department has prepackaged items, as well as full service butcher. Meijer has great prices and super sales, so when combined with in store coupons and manufacture coupons, you save a ton of money! read more

First of all, I'm not a Meijer hater like some. With that said, this particular location is sub par! The fresh veg/fruit area is usually filthy and terribly understocked. The deli has no better meat selection than smaller local markets. The staff working the grocery side are not interested in going out of the way to help customers. And the eternal problem with Meijer.... the crowds! But this can be handled better and actually is in different locations. read more

I try not to go to Meijer, but sometimes they have some really good sales on kitchen staples. It's usually a bad time all around. To begin with, the parking lot is crazy. Because the lot is so big, there are always people who cut across diagonally at full speed, and then there are always some folks who drive boatlike cars ever so slowly and who don't know how to back out of spaces. People are often too lazy to push their shopping carts into the cart corral, and I'll find my car surrounded by shopping carts. Also, if you enter from northbound Coolidge by the gas station, you will encounter a ton of stop signs by the pharmacy drive-thru. As a result, I tend to park along the periphery. The traffic jams don't end when you enter the store, though. Shopping carts clog up the produce section and the dairy aisle. You can tell who cuts through the parking lot at full speed (see above) because they are pushing their carts into people and turning at crazy angles. You can also tell who drives slowly in the parking lot because they are pushing their carts very slowly and then stopping abruptly in the middle of the aisle. The produce often looks a little sad, and many types of fruit tend to taste either sour or flavorless. Many sale items run out by midweek (sales begin on Sunday mornings), so if you see a great deal on paper towels or whatever, act quickly. But don't go on a Sunday because it'll be super crowded. Checkout lanes move slowly. I spend on average 5-7 minutes standing in a checkout lane. Self-checkout lanes aren't any better because people with a ton of groceries end up taking forever. On the plus side, the checkout lane employees do a decent job of bagging groceries, and they are usually pretty nice. Customer service is awful. I've had some irritating encounters with disdainful, rude employees. OK, I get it, I wouldn't want to be stuck at Meijer all night either, but there is no need to sneer at customers. Avoid the pharmacy, as it is extremely slow. They'll tell me it's a 20 minute wait, so I figure I can just kill time at the store, but then it ends up being 45 minutes. OK, so that's the bad. As for the good...? Meijer does have some organic produce, and when it's on sale, it's a good deal. Earthbound Farms salad greens tend to go on sale fairly often as well. Various kitchen staples go on sale fairly often (e.g., frozen vegetables, canned beans, baking stuff). Organic spices were 25% off recently, which was nice. They have a drop-off bin at the entrance for recycling plastic bags (although they don't offer a discount for bringing your own shopping bags). And of course, it's open 24 hours and carries all sorts of stuff. Where else can you get dinosaur figurines and Garden Fresh salsa at 2:00 in the morning? read more

First, let me say that I've always regarded myself as a bit anti-establishment, so I'm not sure whether me reviewing Meijer, let alone giving it a decent grade, means that I don't know myself or that Meijer is just a good place to shop. The produce here is good and fresh with decent prices, although more organic produce would be nice. Meijer definitely has better produce than Kroger (not hard to do) and just about any grocery store or fruit market I can think of, except for Whole Foods where the prices are double or triple. The wine selection is good for a grocery store and the prices are really good when the variety you want is on sale. There are organic items to find throughout the grocery aisles and it's the only store around I know of that carries grass-fed milk--Whole Foods doesn't. read more

Ohhh Meijer. How I've tried to like you.... The simple fact is, the employees always look one second away from going on a homicidal rampage, the organization of the store is terrible. Their produce is always subpar, and no matter what wee-hour of the night you go, you're guaranteed to see some stellar parenting. The first thing I think of doing at 11PM on a Sunday is dressing my toddlers in bikinis and taking them to Meijer. On the way home, we hit up The Hideout for a few drinks. Oh...wait...nevermind. Meijer is the precursor to Walmart. They do carry more organic food items. The store is huge and carries lots of different things under one roof; electronics, clothing, shoes, housewares, appliances, deli and bakery items, produce, automotive supplies, etc. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of quality with some of the shoes they carry and yet the outrageous prices of some of the other shoes. I basically live here. One stop shop for everything I need, and it's cheap. People will claim the Kroger has better prices, but Meijer has no stupid card system for its sales. Great selection here too. However if you need help finding something, good luck. I rarely see anyone around to help locate something, maybe because the place is so big. Sundays are very busy because the sales start that day and you're lucky to find anything on sale that day past 2pm. Maybe it's me, but I think their large shipment happens on Tuesdays, I seem to find everything I need that day. Open 24 hours, so that's awesome, considering I live within 2 miles of this place. Shopper's Pro Tip: DO NOT SHOP FOR GROCERIES HERE. ... at least until they complete the renovation. It seem as if the Randomness Fairies came thru one night and dropped food products around the store while trying to ensure nothing is where you'd expect it to be. Looking for a specific item? Forget it. Either it's in some improbable location or they don't stock it. At least 25% of the alleged "grocery" store is empty shelves and freezers. Sheer shopping misery. I conversed with a few other shoppers who were also wandering thru the desert trying to find something. They were as puzzled and frustrated as I was. Oh My God!!! I have called 5 other stores to get help in finding these Waterpik water floss tips. Not Meijer stores either. ( WalMart Troy still has me on hold). I was given a young man by the name of Sher Juan. He went way above and beyond to help me...and over the phone. He not only found two pack, but also on sale AND walked them over to the pharmacy. Perfect for those Sunday nights at 11:30 when you realize you have no food and there is no time during the week to buy any. You arrive in your pajamas half-awake with your ipod on, or styling with Anatomy flash-cards in your cart (well, I do.). And then you join the throngs of zombies rolling slowly down the aisles of produce picked-dry. When you want to check out you are liable to be sandwiched in line between another zombie, and someone who is arguing about coupons or foodstamps. This is a wonderful opportunity for a pre-checkout nap. The toiletries are cheaper than you find at the drugstore. Customer service can be a surreal experience, especially during the graveyard shift. But now they have self-scanning for unlimited items. read more

I do my grocery shopping here, mostly because it's cheap and it's a one stop shop. My biggest qualm about this place is the deli counter - while the people are nice, it is VERY, VERY, VERY SLOW. If you go on a Sunday, it'll take half an hour at minimum to get your deli meats. Very slow - to the point where I stop at Hollywood Market on my way home and get lunch meat there now. read more

The parking lot is a jumble of roads and some of the roads to it are in very poor condition. Inside, the product and products are okay -- standard for a Meijers. They do a decent job highlighting regional or Michigan products. What really makes this store so bad is the service at checkout. Tonight was the breaking point for me. There was only one checkout with a human and it was quite backed up, so I hit the automated scanner. The person a spot ahead of me had 5 minutes of checkout issues. The next person had checkout issues. They had to send their son to track down Meijers help. I finally got up and standard checking out and the machine couldn't weigh a cantaloupe. It seemed that at any given time, most of the non-express checkouts had red lights and were stalled. After a few minutes of no Meijer's help, nor any acknowledgement, I just walked away from my groceries. This store's management puts little value in having enough staff to provide reasonable checkout capabilities. This has been an rather common occurrence, though not at the new Detroit store. read more

Literally just had the WORST experience at your location. This will be my very last time shopping at ANY Meijer. I watered 30 minutes in line with only two people in front of me. I asked me to speak to Manager because there was only 1 employee working the register while I watched others sit around and socialize. The cashier sent a man by the name of Stephan K. I expressed my frustrations to Stephen and he said "well it's 11:30, what do you expect?" Which I feel was completely rude, your store closed at 12 am. I asked for another manger by the name of Hunter W who only said I will talk to him. I go out of the way to go to meijer stores from Downtown Detroit to the Royal oak store because I am from west Michigan originally and I like the convenience of knowing where everything is. I can honesty say, most meijer stores are convenient, priced well and clean; this is an exception. This meijer is a complete nightmare. This is the second time I have been here in the last two months with a TERRIBLE experience, poor customer service and a downright disgusting store. Two weeks ago I came and the woman in the deli completely ignored me while she was yelling at the other deli worker for 4 minutes until I interrupted her. I brought this to my cashiers attention upon checkout and she said "yeah those girls are really rude, plus I would never buy anything from that deli, I've had food poisoning twice from it"- it is reassuring when the staff won't even touch the food prepared there. Today I went into the store- the organization is complete chaos. While I do realize the store is under construction, the cheese is hidden in the back of the store, behind what looks like, a wall that should be blocked off from the store. Upon leaving the store and going to pay, the cashier was extremely rude. My chip was not working on their "new machines" and she could not over ride the system to swipe the card. She then began to belittle me, as if it was my fault the card wouldn't work, and ask condescendingly if I had another way to pay. I took out another card and the machine did this again. I can guarantee this wasn't of the fault of my card and the woman had the nerve to ask if I could pay with cash. I promptly left the store without my groceries and will get my groceries else where from now on. I have NEVER, ever, had an experience so awful before in my life. read more

The first time I stepped into a Meijer, I felt like I was in a movie. Meijer is a superstore that is very generic, yet very Michigan. It looks a little bit like a Walmart, with the same types of products and services, but with different fonts and signage. You can get everything you need in one stop: craft beer, boxed hair dye, live goldfish, undies, hunting gear, jewelry, gardening tools, craft supplies, and more. Bonus: Gas prices are typically very competitive. Not quite as good as Costco, but usually less expensive than other stations in the area.
