I am so glad they were open in the later hours for pick-up orders. I ordered a Pad See Ew with a Medium Plus heat and some egg rolls. The egg rolls were HUGE which was a plus but they were SUPER greasy. I thought Medium Plus would be spicy but it did not prepare me for what I got. Each noodle was COATED and I mean COATED in chili pepper flakes, stacked on top of one another, and I felt so bad because while I feel like I can usually take spice, it definitely made it hard to eat. I think because of that, the flavor was very hard to find underneath the pure spice. I also wasnt a big fan of the noodle texture, although I doubt that is their fault. I think if I come back to Mekkala, I will order a lower spice and maybe just get something else. read more

Wanted to have Thai before Thanksgiving day with family. It's my wife's first time to try Thai. Opened the door, greeted by a nice guy probably owner or manager. Even his friend our age who was chowing down greeted us. Very warm and welcoming. Food was great. I chose the pad Thai with chicken for wife's first. The young cashier kid was so professional. There is hope!!! It's the generation after gen z which behave better. Food was great. One star less than five because noodles were over cooked for Thai and the sticky rice was hard ball. Delicious Thai food, what's not to like?? There are plenty of Thai restaurants in Chico but this is the one my friends and I have stuck with. The panang curry is a favorite, and a different one that I especially enjoy is the eggplant. Our server, Drew, suggested it and now I order it every time. The texture is perfect and it's a great balance of sweet and savory; I definitely recommend it if you want to try something more unique. The service is quick and friendly. Caring service. Mekkala's prices per dish are probably the most expensive Thai dishes in Chico however the quantity is also one of the largest plus a fantasic side salad or soup are included as well as rice is included with most dishes. I really liked their Yellow Curry dish. I also really enjoyed their Eggplant dish and will be ordering both again at our next visit (along with their included salads). Their Pat thai dish was ok however it tasted different than I'm used to and this time I wasn't impressed. I'm not an expert with Thai food so theirs may be more authentic, I don't know, all I know is that I won't be reordering it. Overall the food was good. The ambience was just so so since the non Thai music coming from the kitchen took away from the overall experience. Hopefully they'll read this review and recognize that IF they are going to have any music in the background that Thai or a more mellow type music would more likely add to the ambience compared to whatever genre music the kitchen crew would prefer. I appreciated the cloth napkins as well as the overall cleanliness of the tables and the caring of our two servers. We will be back. read more

I have enjoyed authentic Thai food all the way from Thailand, to different places around the continental United States, and have to honestly say this place doesn't hold a candle to other Thai restaurants abroad, much less in Chico. Try at your own risk, but ask yourself if you are willing to gamble your hard earned money for overpriced unauthentic "Thai" food, and shady business practices. I put in a phone order which I picked up shortly before closing, and noticed that I had received the wrong order when I got home. Waste of $20, not including the tip. This was my second trip to this place, in hopes that the mediocre food that my Family and I ate the first time, would be better. I called the next business day, and informed "Drew" of the mishap. He took my information, and informed me that my order would be replaced free of charge. Where it really gets hairy is when I call ahead of time to put in the replacement order a couple of days later, return to pick up what I originally was supposed to receive, and was informed by Drew upon arrival (after he tried to charge me) that the owner wasn't honoring the replacement order, nor would a refund be provided. This occurred despite having my receipt in hand, having paid in cash, to include a picture of what I previously received as proof... If this doesn't raise red flags to new potential customers (especially those paying with cash), I don't know what will. Mekkala Thai Cuisine owned by Nicole Khamphasong is as dishonest as they come. Ask yourself if you want to support local businesses who choose to lie, cheat, and steal from customers in a small community where word gets around fast. read more

Green chicken curry is still 10/10. Finally tried something different and got the chicken Pad Thai; noodles were a little on the dry side and the chicken wasn't that flavorful, had to add some of the green curry to compensate for the lack of sauce. I had high hopes because friends recommended I try this restaurant again.... Now I question their friendship! The place is clean, the staff is friendly, but the food is awful! It has no resemblance to Thai food. You would be better off attempting to make something from YouTube. Seriously I don't understand with all the recipes out there how it could be this far off from actual Thai food. I would have gone to Thai Basil downtown, but unfortunately it is closed. They said something about closed due to cleaning there LOL, but at least the food was always on point. After a wonderful time, walking through the wildflowers at Bidwell park, my lady and I were in the mood for something great to eat. Mekkala Thai Cuisine showed up in our search and we made our way over. I admit I was a tad bit skeptical to find good Thai food in these parts, especially one that would be sensitive to our plant based needs. We made it to the restaurant right as it opened for the evening. They are nestled in the corner next to a burger joint, behind an oasis of trees. The restaurant had a great atmosphere, nice and open dining room, with plenty of windows for natural light. The bathrooms were clean, and place was quite welcoming. We were greeted by our server, Alex, who later inform us that his mother owned the restaurant. Alex was friendly, full of energy, knowledgeable of the menu items, and honest about the dishes we asked about. The honesty was what stood out and made me want to try things out even more. The tea we started off with was steeped just right, and gave me good hopes for the meal to come. I have this odd tendency to test out most Asian eateries by the way they cook their rice. Why? Rice is a staple in many Asian foods, and if the rice is not cooked well, the food will follow suit. The right was served beautifully and when my lady took a scoop revealing no soggy grains, or sticky patches, I smiled and began to devour our food. The food was delicious and seasoned well, the rice was warm and fluffy, and the water did not taste like it came from the back sink. We ordered the pad-see-ew noodle dish with tofu, the eggplant tofu dish, and a plate of crispy tofu with their homemade sweet and sour sauce. I am partial to the wider, flat noodles for the pad-see-ew but their rendition was done well. It was exceptional in that none of the noodles stuck to each other which left it room for all of them to be seasoned and marinated. The eggplant tofu was my favorite and I don't even like eggplant. My hands down favorite, however, was the crispy tofu and dipping sauce. This was the BEST fried tofu I have ever had and I almost ate that whole plate to myself. You can see the pictures of our empty plates as proof that this restaurant is the real deal. Great service, great food, great PRICE! Last night I had my daughter order take out to pick up. We had the green curry chicken, "mild plus". After she brought it hope and we mixed it in our bowls with the rice, we discovered it was more of a hot to Thai hot experience. When we called the restaurant to find out what happened, we thought maybe they got some orders mixed, the young man answering the phone admitted that he had "screwed up" and made it too hot when he was adding the extra heat to make it mild plus. I replied, "Ok, I understand." And then an awkward silence ensued where I was obviously waiting for the restaurant to offer to fix their mistake. I spoke up and asked when we could pick up the correct order and he said he had to go "talk to the chef". When he returned, he said it is Mekkala's policy that they don't offer a new order in these situations but that we could "bring it back in" and the chef would "bring it into the kitchen and add some coconut milk to it". I was shocked. Here I am at home sick with influenza type A, and this guy is telling me to put the now-cold food that has been in my mouth back into the restaurant container, go back to the restaurant with it, have it brought back into the kitchen so the chef could dump some more coconut milk in it and then take it back home again? I asked to speak with his manager. When this woman got in the phone I asked her if that is indeed Mekkala's policy in these situations, she stated it was and there was nothing else they would offer. I didn't think I should need to explain to a restaurant manager that their policy is definition in violation of OSHA codes and the yuck factor in general. But she very confidently did not care. So that's my story, I was clear with her I would not be leaving a favorable review. And I can only surmise that if they treat Safety Regulations and OSHA restaurant codes with such blatant disregard publicly I can't imagine how things look behind the scenes there. I will be avoiding Mekkala at all costs and would recommend you do the same! read more

I just gave this place another try today after a few years. I ordered a lunch special, mild yellow curry with tofu and vegetables with a side of peanut sauce. I just noticed the peanut sauce is half full in the smallest container possible for $2. I called and spoke to a server. When I explained the situation he said he doesn't have anything to do with it and he doesn't make the rules. I asked to speak to someone in charge and he said no one was there. Equals=bad review.
