I don't get why people love this place. It's mediocre at best. My husband and daughter went to the shooting range nearby and never one to pass up Vietnamese, I had them pick up takeout for me. Soft spring roll with pork and shrimp, and chicken and crispy spring roll salad. Everything tasted like it was cooked a day ahead and put into the fridge. The dipping sauce for the spring roll was good but the spring roll wasn't. The pork had a weird taste. The chicken and crispy spring roll salad suffered from the same weird taste. I added loads of sambal to try to make it palatable, but gave up and threw it away. The chicken had the same weird taste and it was really tough and chewy. The dressing was also way too sweet. I used to love Da Lat and expected similar food, but was disappointed. I think they must be getting by because of their beer business. One of the best Vietnamese restaurants I've visited in a long time! I would definitely come back for more! The decor is cozy and warmly lit! It's crowded to the hilt, so you know it's got to be good! My sister and I ordered soup, of course! The fat noodles were delicious and the soup amazingly flavorful! We came just in time! As we ordered, the place packed more people in, but the great thing is the service is quick! Wished we had more time and room for dessert, but no luck! We will definitely be back for more!! I was in town again and brought some of my team members here for dinner. Mekong was recommended by one my team members who are local. The parking was a little tight so we ended up parking in the back. The first thing we notices was that they had an extensive beer selection. There were so many options it was hard to pick. I had cat fish soup from the chef's special section and the spicy eggplant with veggie from the veggie section. My husband and I used to love Mekong. The last two times we were slightly disappointed with the meat portions, so we recently frequented another pho place. We decided to try Mekong again to go to compare, and verified they are definitely using less meat than they used to. We love pho mostly for the broth but goodness they started skimping on the meat, we had to add more chicken and beef when we got home from our fridge :( we will start going to the new pho place we found , which is a bummer because we always loved the management at Mekong. When is it appropriate to write a bad review?! I believe this surely an appropriate time. Let's start from what happened when we were seated; wait time for the server to take our order, 10 minutes. Appetizer was mediocre, probably fast food level at best. Bah Mi was served dry, only half of the bread was dressed the tofu was dry and lacked flavor. You may wonder how to season tofu, let me just say it is percent possible and can be delicious if you know how to prepare it... back to the tasteless sandwich; the cucumbers were old and the cilantro was at least a couple days expired. Note: don't serve your customers yellow cilantro with black spots, that could make them sick. The fries were barely warm.. side note #2 it's always a good idea to make fries fresh and serve after you've plated a sandwich so they come out hot and can be enjoyed, these were fast food level and felt like they were sitting under a heat lamp, and not one with a bulb. My husband ordered a different sandwich and was essentially the same thing I ordered only difference was the pita. I imagine the only reason this place gets customers is really the beer list because the food can only be enjoyed if you are inebriated. read more

Went to Mekong for dinner for the first time! I went at 6pm and there was plenty of parking. I walked right up and got two seats at the bar. They have a huge craft beer menu and I got veil beer and other impressive breweries. The place was huge too. There were tons of seats. I got the sampler appetizer and it was delicious. Had Cha Gio, Goi Cuon, Tom Hoa Tien, Dumpling, Banh Mi Tom Chien. That would be crispy spring roll with pork filling, soft spring roll with shrimp and pork, Rocket Shrimp with Whole Shrimp, Onion and Scallion filling, a pork dumpling and Toasted shrimp with shrimp paste and sesame seed. Delicious!! For my entree I got the Mi Xao Don Thap Cam which is Shrimp, chicken and pork with egg noodles and vegetables. It was so good! I've only had amazing beerS, and pretty much 4 dishes, all of the 6-7 times we've eaten here. I get a variety of IPA's, and a soft roll they have that has shrimp inside and in addition to the normal southeast asian soft rice paper, it's wrapped in friggin' PORK! AND it is delicious. Their normal spring rolls are great, as are their fried rolls. I then dive into their beef Pho with all the parts and bits and meatballs. Extra large and another IPA please. Went there for lunch. Been a while and to my surprise no lunch menu. Most items 13 to 18+ . I ordered JUMBO shrimp hoping for more shrimp than the combos. It comes out with small shrimp like not even tail cut off . This with a lot of broccoli. I sat at the bar and barely saw the bartender . He never asked me if I wanted a beer which they are known for. When he asked me how it was I told him it was not at all what the menu described. He then made excuses... Like I care for 18 . The help was too busy doing busy work or just talking to themselves. It only takes once, and Mekong lost a customer of over 15 years last night. My friend and I went in and sat at the bar. I wanted a banh mi and before the menus even came out, I said to her, "I've never had a banh mi here before. I think they only have them next door (at The Answer)." The menu came, I looked, and yup, no banh mi. I said to the waiter, "No banh mi?" In a very dismissive tone he said, "No banh mi here." Then another staff member at the end of the bar yelled, "IF YOU WANT BANH MI, GO NEXT DOOR." All of the staff in ear shot laughed hysterically. A female staff person said, as she too laughed, "Wow, you're rude." With that, I grabbed my purse and headed out the door. Clearly they did not want or deserve my business. As I walked out, they continued to laugh with wild abandon as if my asking if a Vietnamese restaurant served a Vietnamese sandwich was the oddest question in the world to ask. I have never experienced such insolent, discourteous behavior from any establishment in my life. From not one, not two, but at least three staff members. So we left. And went to Tay Ho. Mekong is for beer lovers and that's exactly right. It's for beer lovers and not food lovers. 250 Yelp reviews and all the beer hype definitely got my attention. Enough that it got me to leave the comfy confines of my Mechanicsville prison and venture out. We went on a Sunday at 3:00pm and the place was pretty chill. The World Cup was on the big screen and our bartender was a pretty cool guy. He let us sample a lot of beers. Every beer we tried had a ton of flavor and I bet the RVA Beer Snobs probably go into convulsions just getting near the building. I can't remember all the names of the stuff we sampled but he was a really cool guy. He hooked us up with a lot of free samples & explained the flavor profile. We ordered two appetizers, the fried egg rolls, and the pork dumplings. Our egg rolls were room temperature (total fail) but they tasted pretty good. The pork dumplings were rather delicious as well. We both ordered the pork chop on broken rice. Sadly, it wasn't enough to dethrone the King of Richmond Vietnamese food (Pho So 1). It seemed like they used a traditional hefty American-style pork chop instead of the traditional ultra-thin one (fail #2). Also the flavor was lacking (fail #3). I doubt they whisked shallot, brown sugar, fish sauce, vinegar, and pepper in a shallow dish. Using a fork, pierced the pork chops all over (to allow marinade to penetrate faster) and make it yummy. I was getting my state inspection done for my car at Libbie Place BP, so I decided to have lunch while I waited. I considered making a return trip to Huynh's, which was closeby, but a Yelp search showed that Mekong was just a little farther down the street, so I decided to try someplace new. Mekong is fairly spacious, with several separate rooms for dining. The wood used for the tables and chairs was fairly dark. I thought the decorations were well thought out. Overall, it was very clean and pleasant. Service was also excellent; my waiter actually addressed me as "sir" several times, which I'm not all that used to hearing. He was helpful and attentive though. I was going to order pho, as I generally do when I try any Vietnamese restaurant for the first time, but there were only five varieties of pho: chicken, seafood, and three kinds of beef. Most of the beef pho only had one or two cuts of meat though. I asked my waiter if they offered any pho with tendon or tripe (my favorite toppings), but he said no. I was pretty bummed out, so much so that I decided to forgo ordering pho. I did find it intriguing how they offered THREE portion sizes for pho though (regular, large, and superbowl), which I've never seen before. I ended up ordering a broken rice dish, since I had had pho and bun not too long ago at Pho Boston. I chose the dish with grilled pork, shredded pork, and meat pie. It was quite tasty! I was very pleased with the flavors and seasonings on all three types of pork. There was actually so much rice on the platter (it made up the entire bottom layer of the plate; probably about three bowls' worth) that I ended up taking some of the leftover rice to go. Broken rice is pretty fun to eat, so I didn't want it to go to waste. Overall, I really liked the food and service at Mekong, which is why I gave it four stars. However, the lack of pho options was a major letdown, so I might not come back too often given the PLETHORA of Vietnamese restaurants in Richmond where I CAN get my tendon and tripe-containing pho. ;) Mekong does pride itself on its beer selection though ("Mekong is for beer lovers" is written on the logo at the center of every table), which is kind of an interesting combination at a Vietnamese restaurant. This aspect does make Mekong somewhat unique; I'm just not a big fan of beer, so this doesn't happen to be a particularly convincing reason for me to choose Mekong over other places. read more
