Four of us went here for dinner on a weekday night. There is a decent selection of craft beers and a large menu. Mostly combination meals with the pork, beef, or chicken options. I had a grilled chicken with peppers and mushrooms in a honey ginger sauce. It was very good but next time I will add some spice. The best order of the evening was the chicken pot order. Just another one of my favorite establishments on earth, adjacent to The Answer (same owner). Expansive menu of authentic Vietnamese food that is prepared with fresh ingredients and served in appropriate portions ( large for entrees). World class craft beer selection that is constantly changing. Servers are very well trained and know their beer and of course the menu. Mekong is the GOAT. I live in the northern va area , but whenever I am town visiting friends this is my number one. We went on a Saturday night and it was poppin' so we plopped on some bar seats. My friend and I shameless got a feast consisting of crispy spring rolls, steamed dumplings, pho thai, grill with chicken and beef, and a veggie and tofu dish made of crispy tofu, string beans, pineapple and other veggies. We came here on a Saturday night around 7pm right after a fun evening at The Answer. It was packed! We didn't make a reservation, so a table for two was about a 20 minute wait (not too bad in my book). However, when we were seated it took forever to get a waiter. Our waiter was kind, but he was very busy. It seemed like there were only 3 waiters in the place. There were long waits between appetizer ordering, entree ordering, food arrival, and receiving the check. We tried: Pan-Fried Vegetables Dumplings (6) These were very bland for us. The main flavor was oil. I let them soak in the dipping sauce for a while and still found them to be a bit bland. Pho Xao Ga (Flat Rice Noodles w/ Chicken) I love the texture of rice noodles. They are chewy and almost doughy, but not in a way that will hurt your tummy. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the flavor of this dish. The sweet sauce worked well with the veggies, chicken, and noodles. Dau Hu Xao Cai Ngot (Vegetable Dish: Tofu, Bok Choy, Onion, Shiitake, Rice) My partner liked this a lot. Wow. Being a visitor to the Richmond scene, my friend introduced me to this place! I ordered the large bowl of pho for a reasonable price of $16-$18 and was completely stuffed afterwards. Definitely want to come here again the next time I am in town. read more

I thought this place was alright. Overall it's not a bad place to visit. I would say the most appealing thing about this place is portion size. They really do give you a good amount of food for the price you pay. Service is pretty good too with attentive and courteous servers. The food itself was fine. My pork and onion stirfry tasted pretty decent, especially with pieces of pork getting nice and crispy along with the onions. I would say the food is well executed, just not mind-blowing spectacular. If I'm already in the area, I would be fine coming here if people threw it out as a suggestion. However, there are definitely other places that would catch my eye more. read more

I've been here about 20 times from Pittsburgh. It's perfectly paired with my Richmond craft beer travels and the answer brewery next door (same ownership). I order something different every time. Love their hot n sour soup and seafood offerings. Their apps are always consistently delicious as well. Great value for portion sizes and always has an amazing out of state draft selection of elite beers of all styles. read more

Was here in June to celebrate a birthday. Great tasting authentic Vietnamese food! I had the Banh Xeo (crêpe) as my main course and it was delicious! Just the right crispness and right amount of filling. The others in our group had Pho. We also shared the special rolls (cha gio) and the shrimp (chao tom) rolls for appetizers. After dozens of visits to The Answer next door, I finally made my way to Mekong a couple weeks back as part of a ladies beer group gathering. We all sat at a high top across from the bar in the back. I arrived a bit later than others and ordered my beer directly from the bar. The beer list is as you'd expect: massive, top-tier, and reasonably priced. I loved that they had loads of sours on, including the Pick Your Own by Allagash. Year after year, that remains one of my favorite sours of all time. And they had just received in the latest batch. Excellent. For food, I ordered the fried rice with chicken. It lasted me four meals. I'm not even kidding. I don't know how that happened. Admittedly I would've preferred the wake and bacon from The Answer (ugh, best dish!) but it was a good secondary option. Many of their other dishes seemed to have shrimp in them, and I don't eat shrimp, so overall the food menu didn't really appeal to me. I'd return for the beer, but I'd vote for The Answer for food. read more

A friend told me about Mekong. Incredible food in a strip outside of downtown and adjacent to a great brewery. The only reason this place gets awesomeness status though is that it has the best beer list (top 5 I've ever seen) in the East. The breweries they find are soooooo impossible like Bissel Brothers of Portland Maine. The food is delish. read more

Mekong has eliminated giving customers an itemized bill for their meals. They now simply give you a bottom-line figure that you are expected to pay. The girls at the register slap in some numbers on an old calculator and then tell you ow much money they want. There is no transparency and you have no idea if the amount is correct or if you are being double charged. To say the least this new practice is sketchy if not dishonest. read more

Food was horrible. My boyfriend got pho and I got broken rice dish with chicken. The pho broth didn't have the deep beef flavor and wasn't very clear. The beef inside was not the quality I was expecting. It was way too overcooked, leaving the beef taste a bit chewy. The broken rice dish was definitely not worth the money. The chicken not only had distinct chicken smell, that should've been avoided, but also was too dry. The dish was just rice and dry, smelly chicken with 2-3 cucumbers for $9. Food is 5-Stars, beer list is amazing, also 5-stars. Environment is a 2.5-3, which is why I suspect this place doesn't have a solid 5-star review on yelp. Don't get me wrong, the environment isn't terrible, it's lively in the evenings but it's just not updated and isn't a very sexy date night spot. RVA Draft Room is a pretty cool concept! All of their offerings are self-pour and you pay by the…read moreounce. They have a variety of glassware on hand in different sizes, so it's easy to create your own flight or to just pour a full pint. I had never visited a similar establishment in the past, so I had about 20 questions on how to operate everything. Here's the rundown: 1) Walk up to the cashier and give them your credit card. They will swipe it, give it back, and provide a card to access the taps. 2) Check the TV screen for the full digital listing of their available taps, or walk right up to the taps and read each individually. You can click on the beer name for a full description, including style, price per ounce, and abv. 3) Pick a glass, place the access card in the little slot, be sure you're on the main screen, and then pull the tap handle that corresponds to the beer. Each screen has two, with the taps beneath. Hold your glass at a 45-degree angle unless you're pouring cider, in which case it doesn't really matter. 4) Take your card, pick a seat or stand, and drink your beer. Repeat. 5) When you're ready to leave, walk back up to the cashier, choose your method of payment (I chose to just leave it on the same card...easy), select a tip, sign, and you're good to go. I tried six samples during my time there -- all about 3-4 ounces or less -- and paid $12 pre-tip. This is an excellent place to try a variety of beers. I imagine most names are recognizable...they carry stuff from Ardent and Isley, among other local and regional spots, but others aren't the easiest to find, such as Funky Buddha. RVA Draft Room is in the same open-format building as Zzaam, a tea place I forget the name of, and Sweet & Sassy BBQ. It's also centrally situated in Carytown. I didn't like the seating...I found it really uncomfortable. I think they need to invest in purse hooks and perhaps some stools with backs. I had to keep standing up to avoid hurting my back. Beyond the subpar seating, everything else was nice, and I think it's cool that they offer free tasting events as well. I'm sure I'll return at some point!

Basically you can sit at any of the spots each little restaurant gives you a number if you ordered anything and they deliver to your table. If you want beer you will need to see the attendant and get a card so you can self serve yourself beer, cider or wine. Supposedly they cap you at 64 oz but as long as you are not wasted of anything they say they can override it if you get to that point. As far as the spot goes.... it's very family friendly. Though I wish it was bigger than what it is. I also don't get why a lot of beer places are going for bar chairs and table tops instead of regular height tables and chairs. That would be my only complaint not the most comfortable. Though where the food options are there are normal tables and chairs but limited. Plus if you get there around noon half the tables are difficult to sit at due to the incredible sun that comes through... it would probably be better if they get some blinds. The draft room has games you can rent it seems like since the attendant oversees it. We brought our own since we weren't sure if they had anything to occupy our three and a half year old. As both my husband are beer, wine and cider drinkers you would think this would be heaven.... but we were both kind of disappointed with the selection. We drink just about all beer, wine and cider but we felt like the selection kind of lacked. Just to give you an idea of our favorite RVA breweries/cideries.... Strangeways, Hardywood, The Answer, Busky are probably our top places. I feel like if you are expecting something like any of the four I mentioned you may come out pretty disappointed. Though because of the food options and how it's casual, both my husband and I said we would be back since it's pretty family friendly. It's nice that it's not just one food truck option like most breweries or no options for food. So if you are hungry and are wanting to do some tastings definitely check it out. On another note... parking is kind of a pain since it's in Carytown... definitely stinks in the winter. My bet is when it gets nicer, traffic will really pick up since it looks like they have some nice outdoor seating!

The food was phenomenal for the most part that trip - we had the bucatini with slab bacon (me), spicy shells (him), plus the leeks and creamed spinach. For drinks, I had the Fogcutter (whew, strong) and he ordered a bottle of expensive orange wine. Dessert-wise, he had the banana-brulee cheesecake and I had the cream and berries (not my favorite, but different). Service was friendly and prompt. We were interested to try more, so I was pleased when I randomly woke up around 1:15 am on April 1 and was able to score some May reservations. Visit 2 (May): Earlier this month, we stopped in again the night of Mother's Day. I was surprised to see the restaurant wasn't full, perhaps that was by design due to the holiday. We were seated in the two-tops in the middle of the room, which we much preferred, as we didn't have neighbors screaming in our ears. We also asked if we could split the remainder of our sides since we were going to different places and were told that was no problem. Our desserts were delightful! For our meals, my mom teetered pretty heavily before landing on the chicken based on our server's suggestion. She said it was okay but heavily salted.
