Pheeewwww that was one of the worse restaurants I've eaten in New Orleans! I had the hot sausage sandwich with fries and gumbo. The fries were cooked in oil that hadn't been cleaned in over a week it tasted horrible and the sandwich was not good at all. Don't get me started on the gumbo. read more

I was throughly disappointed with Melba's, the way people are always flocking in there, I just knew the food was fantastic; yeah fantastically unappealing, sloppy, unappetizing, and over priced. I had the $15 shrimp poboy with fries and drink, an extra cost. The poboy was skimpy for one, appeared to be shrimp mush mush for two, and was not good at all for three, didn't even taste like a shrimp poboy. The fries were not good, tasted like commodity fries, if there was a thing, and they have fake cold drinks, what is cola?! I threw away 3/4 of my food after forcing myself to eat and drink what I did. My mother who hates to waste food even threw hers away. Everything was a disappointment, well except for the staff, they were pretty cool, and the inside decor, that is why they got the two stars. I would not recommend anyone eat here, I could not wait to get to a real Coke to wash that mess down. Their other food MAY be better, but I won't be taking the chance to find out. A nice place for laundry and or food or a dacari. This is a very real 24h with local roots and a literacy project too. It's clean, the staff is helpful, the food is good. By far the WORST "Roast Beef Po-Boy" I've ever eaten in my life! I put it in quotes because at first glance, seeing meat of that color and texture (never seen "flaky light tan" roast beef before), I swore they had served me a tuna fish sandwich. Ugh. And you know how tuna fish sandwiches taste dry and flavorless without adequate dressings like mayo? Somehow that applied here. New Orleanians, who know good food, expect a hot roast beef po-boy to be oozing in juicy gravy, and for their sandwiches to be accompanied by a selection of hot sauces and ketchup. We looked around... not a single bottle of ANY condiments visible on premises. Know how many napkins were needed? ONE. Not 10-20 like a traditional, yummy po-boy place... ONE! The vibe in this eatery screams, "Tourists, give us your dollars!" There were bright lights, glitzy ordering kiosks, a wall of books for some reason, another wall of daiquiri machines, plus a bible-thumper handing out free copies of her work. It's bizarre, frankly. Two of the patrons were very clearly sex workers between "jobs" who reeked of body powder (the kind you splash on when you don't have access to a shower during your "work" day). Despite showing up during the height of lunch hour, we noticed not a single person in line, just a couple of tables occupied by non-locals evidently willing to eat anything given to them without complaint. Nary a "regular" in sight because honestly I doubt there are any. Still, the wait time for our food was longer than most busy lunch spots for some reason. As for the name, Melba, which one tourist asked about, the owner/manager was overheard explaining how it was the name of a place we locals all knew and loved back in the day, so they coopted it for this wanna-be joint. Sorry, they may as well have called it "K&B" or "Krauss" because it has literally nothing to do with the reputation of the former namesake. Indeed, I think the proprietors of the original Melba shop would have blanched at the sight of all the beige food laid out in troughs calling it a "hot lunch". Never going back. Our quest for excellent roast beef po-boys continues. At least we started at the bottom. This place, unless it's a front or halfway-house of some kind, is doomed. read more

We tried to explain that we were missing two orders of gumbo and a gallon and a half of daiquiris. They were no help. They kept referring us to door dash. Door dash told us to call the restaurant. The shrimp and grits smelled spoiled. The cabbage was not fresh. Chicken wings were cold and bland. I never leave bad reviews but this was by far the worst food ever. After going back and forth with door dash, we were able to get the money back. I'm glad because no one should pay for food with low quality. Uber driver recommended this place as a spot where the locals go. We asked the uber driver why we never see seafood boil on the menu and he suggested this spot. We ordered the 5 piece wing special, the fried shrimp and fish plate and 2 pounds of crawfish. The fried chicken was okay. The fish and shrimp were better at Mother's. This was my first crawfish experience but I thought it was pretty good but they were a little mushy. Overall, food was all right but the wait staff was definitely down to earth. I ordered the fried shrimp, and they were really good. I expected more breading on the shrimp for some reason, but it wasn't bad at all. I didn't need to use any tartar or cocktail sauce at all. It seems like it could be perfect, late night Poboy spot, Old school New Orleans name, unfortunately after trying Melbas 3 times, all I can report is that the food is substandard for Nola. Every time I ordered, The Food portions have been small, and the flavor underwhelming. The last time I ordered ( and believe me, it will be the last time) I got the shrimp Poboy. The Poboy was barely dressed, with very little Lettuce, almost no pickles. The shrimp bordered on being disgusting. Small shrimp maybe the size of my thumb print that were cooked to a hard rubbery texture. The bread that was used was probably fresh the day before, it was hard and very chewy, difficulty to eat to say the least. WE LOVED MELBA'S!!! The food, the people, the vibe was everything we wanted. We were so glad to get away from the quarter for some authentic flavors and to interact with local people. I had the turkey leg which was seasoned for the GAWDS!!!! It was so freaking good I can't even describe it. Also, try the gumbo! Upon trying to show the manager that the meat is gray I was told that "they don't make them here they order them and I should've looked at it first." Melba's what happened? We came into town about 8:00 on Tuesday night and wanted the good comfort food we were used to. (You catered our daughter's wedding) We knew to order in advance. Forty-five minutes later, we asked someone where our order was, and it had been in the warmer at least half that time, and no one had been able to find it. When we got our order home, the rice was not done, the vegetables were extremely overcooked, the sausage split and dried, red beans out of the can, and they forgot my gumbo! I added two pictures which show shrimp and grits (updated) in one and wings in the other. In my honest opinion I like my shrimp any way, what so ever. But when it comes to shrimp and grits I personally like my fried shrimp more but that's just my personal preference. It was still good regardless. But let me tell y'all something mane. The WINGS I got from y'all were so GREAT I got them 2 days in a row. I was gonna do it a 3rd time but I didn't want to look ridiculous. Of course this was ordered in this time so I didn't get to see the ambiance or service but if it's the ladies they were there before they're always real nice. EAT AT MELBA'S!! Visiting for bead distribution and checking out the Chewbacchus parade route had me driving right past Melba's. I've been told they're great, and while it was a trustworthy source, I really had to find out for myself. So, I loop around the block (darn those one way streets), and park right up front. I'm in it to win it, now. I walk in, and right up in front is Keith. Greeting me and welcoming me like I'm a part of his family. (Maybe I'm am. I'm adopted. We don't know my life...) Regardless, he's super friendly and welcoming and told me to look around and if I had questions that someone would help me. Maybe I imagined that part. While he was talking, I was busy snooping around. It's attached to a laundromat. And a bar. And all other things that could really fill a Saturday afternoon, if you know what I mean. BUT, I do remember him telling me that if I ordered from the kiosk and not the line that I would save some money, so I went that route. It seemed like way less pressure than looking at all the goodies and ordering everything I could see. Turns out that might've been wrong. I ordered half the menu anyway. For about $20, I ordered the chicken teriyaki on rice with cornbread and sausage and baked macaroni and cheese grits. Oh, and a beverage. Long story short, I only ate the sausage and cheese grits for that first meal because they were really filling and delicious and OHEMGEE don't sleep on those grits. Don't get me wrong, I loved having all of those leftovers, but my eyes were way bigger than my stomach. Also, let's give a huge shout out to Cheryl. While waiting for my order, she was just the friendliest person I could've encountered. Like almost ever. We chatted and she's been working with Keith for more than half her lifetime. That really speaks to how great a place that is and a boss that he can be. I was completely impressed.
