EAT AT MELBA'S!! Visiting for bead distribution and checking out the Chewbacchus parade route had me driving right past Melba's. I've been told they're great, and while it was a trustworthy source, I really had to find out for myself. So, I loop around the block (darn those one way streets), and park right up front. I'm in it to win it, now. I walk in, and right up in front is Keith. Greeting me and welcoming me like I'm a part of his family. (Maybe I'm am. I'm adopted. We don't know my life...) Regardless, he's super friendly and welcoming and told me to look around and if I had questions that someone would help me. Maybe I imagined that part. While he was talking, I was busy snooping around. It's attached to a laundromat. And a bar. And all other things that could really fill a Saturday afternoon, if you know what I mean. BUT, I do remember him telling me that if I ordered from the kiosk and not the line that I would save some money, so I went that route. It seemed like way less pressure than looking at all the goodies and ordering everything I could see. Turns out that might've been wrong. I ordered half the menu anyway. For about $20, I ordered the chicken teriyaki on rice with cornbread and sausage and baked macaroni and cheese grits. Oh, and a beverage. Long story short, I only ate the sausage and cheese grits for that first meal because they were really filling and delicious and OHEMGEE don't sleep on those grits. Don't get me wrong, I loved having all of those leftovers, but my eyes were way bigger than my stomach. Also, let's give a huge shout out to Cheryl. While waiting for my order, she was just the friendliest person I could've encountered. Like almost ever. We chatted and she's been working with Keith for more than half her lifetime. That really speaks to how great a place that is and a boss that he can be. I was completely impressed. Some of the worst food I've had in New Orleans. I honestly can't believe so many people rave about this bland, disgusting food. It was our first time here so we ordered several different items hoping to get a good sample of as much as we could. Ribs, baked chicken, macaroni and cheese, cabbage, red beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya and cornbread. Not a single item was appetizing aside from the gumbo which was just chicken and sausage and barely passable. Even the ribs, though tender and falling off the bone were extremely fatty and the sauce was way too sweet. Since it is Thanksgiving Day, eating outside is a little difficult. However the restaurant was doing food delivery. Ordered the beef roast poboy. For those who are uninitiated, a poboy is essentially a cheese steak sandwich with tomatoes and lettuce. The poboy portion side was good. However, the sandwich could be better. Flavor profile needed a little more oomph. We also ordered fried chicken wings in hot sauce with corn bread and jambalaya. Too much of hot sauce made the experience bad. Jambalaya was decent. Atmosphere is chill and cool but the staff is also really friendly. They know what they're doing and what they're talking about, and you can tell making the customers happy is their main priority. From the moment you walk in you can see the culture of New Orleans. There's artwork on every piece of the wall that's shows Nola's true beauty. The Food is pretty good! I recommend trying the shrimp poboy! Probably the best I've had in the city!!!! Also, check out the deals they offer! One of Melba's main priorities is making sure the local neighborhood kids are reading books and improving their education. Kids can walk in with their report cards and get freebies! Also this business is always inviting authors and other famous guests to read to the children and pass out free books! Heads up it's not uncommon to walk in during a book signing!!!! As my family ate, I waited exactly 43 minutes before asking for a refund (I checked TWICE to ensure I had not been overlooked) and they were going to go ahead and give me my food. However by that time my family had already finished their food. I had a few bites of my family's food and it was pretty good. Got my book, saw my chicken plate sitting on the counter (waiting for po-boy) for about 25 minutes. People were coming in, ordering and getting their food while mine .... waiting. I asked the guy pushing the orders out where mine was, I said "I've been waiting forever". He said "I know, right"! Anyway ... I kept seeing counter people looking at my plate, opening it up and asking the po-boy maker about my sandwich. Appartently, they got a large order called in and started making 5 or 6 "to go" po-boys before starting on mine. Sooo... finally I got my food, in 30 minutes. No one else waiting for food. All of 3 people in the restaurant and I wait 10 minutes for a hot sausage; then had to wait another unrecorded amount of time. When I make remark about the time, lack of patrons ratio... The sandwich preparer took exception to my question; then an argument ensues because of my inquiry. Pooooooor customer service for a worker to argue with a patron, smh. Ordered red beans and rice with Mac & Cheese , Jambalaya , Chicken wings($9) at kiosk coz it said then pop would be 99cents. My friend ordered similar but different sides. They took quite a while to get my order and people ordered later than me got their food. Finally they gave it but not sure of its mistake they gave 6 chicken wings extra for me and my friend as well. I ordered cheese & extra Mayo. I did not receive either. And it was small. And the bread was hard. I barely have teeth in my mouth and can't handle hard bread. I just wasn't impressed at all. Me and my coworkers came here for an early lunch and all three ordered shrimp and mac and cheese. It was my coworkers first time at Melba's and they chose the spot for lunch. When they asked the cashier with the pink braids any questions, she was very rude and short with the answer. After my coworkers received their food we waited an additional 15 or so minutes before they looked at me and said "You ordered before us, where is your food?" So I went to ask the girl with the pink braids unfortunately. She told me she just got there and she doesn't know what is going on. I asked If she could find out how long it will l be and gave her my name, to which she hesitated but finally gave in. Sure enough, my food was just sitting on the lunch counter tied up in a plastic bag. How long it sat is unknown. We met the owner and she was nice thankfully, even giving us a free book. But when we left, starving, we began to eat our food in the car. The mac and cheese tasted off. Me and my coworker smelled our mac and cheese , and it smelled extremely sour, turning our stomachs. We went back in to let the staff know that the mac and cheese was sour, one of the workers said it is just the sharp cheddar. I love to cook and have cooked with sharp cheddar often, it has a strong taste but it isn't sour smelling. The owner apologized and they replaced it with jambalaya. The jambalaya was not enjoyable, we all ended up just eating the shrimp and throwing the rest away. This was such a negative experience, the staff here are very rude and not attentive. You come to NOLA to drink and Melba's is serving the BEST daiquiris in the city!! Which says a lot because there are about two daiquiri locations on every block in the French quarter. These are sooooo strong and the flavors are amazing. I've literally tried about 10 places for drinks and melba's is my go to! The ladies at the front even remembered me a year after I went! So I had the baked chicken and mac n' cheese. When I tell you the first bite said it ALL!!! A small homey neighborhood joint with larger than life flavors. I was one in a group of about 20. When I tell you everyone was more than satisfied, who couldn't walk out, sat for a few to digest, then stumbled out! The daquiri specials are phenomenal! Every day of the week there is a special. We happened to be there for the 44oz for $7.50 special. A New Orlean's must visit spot. It seems like they cater to the locals, which makes them even that much more special. No watered down taste or quality for throngs of tourists. This may sound weird, but check out their bathroom in the middle between the restaurant and the laundromat. The reviews of my fellow yelpers who graced this establishment before me .... made me hungry. :-). The reviews are ALL OVER the walls. Take a read, then eat.. and you will see. Melba's is deserving of the coveted five stars. I do understand the customer complaints of other yelpers, which is unfortunate. Okay so if I had to solely rate this place off customer service, I would easily give it a 4. The staff makes you feel as if you're a part of their family. Very welcoming and they keep the conversation going. Part of that may be because they know the food is going to take a while lol but either way it always makes any food experience go by smoother when the staff is great. This spot does offer tables to sit in but it's truly unique in the fact that there's a laundry mat, daquiri shop and restaurant all in one! Never seen that before but pretty normal for different areas in the south. Now for the food, I would honestly that it a 3. The red beans were disappointing, absolutely no flavor and I ordered a smoked sausage and didn't even get it with the order which sucked. The fried chicken was a nice complimentary touch but it was highly unseasoned which again, was disappointing because it was perfectly fried. Everything else (shrimp and catfish platter, Po boy, and gumbo) kind of seemed to follow the same pattern, good enough but still missing any flavors to stand out.
