We paid a couple bucks extra for real maple syrup, because we were visiting from the states, and maple syrup is kind of a thing. Overrated. That would be the first word that comes to mind regarding Melissa's Missteak in Banff. It's not awful or bad, it's just not great or necessarily good either. It's very average every time I have ate here over the years, yet people RAVE about this place. Also it's incredibly expensive. The Huevos Rancheros I had (I added chorizo) were $19.99 and amounted to a pile of Breakfast slop smothered in cheese. It was hard to distinguish what was what under that cheese both visually and by taste. After we staggered into our hotel lobby in the wee hours of the morning, we asked the concierge where to get good food that we'd inevitably need to fuel us for the day ahead. He recommended Melissa's. A few hours later that's where we had a brilliant breakfast that was only rivaled by our experience at Touloulou's. First, the place was spacious yet snug, with high ceilings from which various country flags were hanging to make a very welcoming environment. There wasn't a great rush at dawn on a Monday morning, but the fact that we weren't the only ones there attests to Melissa's popularity. Pro tip- Come with a buddy so that you can order a sweet and savory entree and swap. We went with huevos rancheros (cheesy over-easy eggs) and the Swiss apple pancake, which tasted like cross between a pancake and french toast. We were served in reasonable time by a genial waiter. It looked as if Banff has a dozen and more enticing eateries, but Melissa's served a solid meal, if you're unsure of where to get your breakfast of champions. read more

We enjoyed a very good meal at Melissa's on St. Patrick's Day. The French Onion soup was tasty. My half rack of ribs were very tasty. all of the steaks were cook correctly. The bread was very tasty. All the house salads were fresh. Melissa's is a old school restaurant and one of the oldest in Banff. The restrooms are next to the front door. I had the rib steak with peppercorn gravy, mashed potatoes and vegetable, and it was easily one of the best steaks I've ever had. Their salad dressing was tomato based, and good enough for me to finish off most of it with the complimentary bread. The location itself has outdoor seating, with a view both of the street it is on and the mountains in the background. Service was friendly (my waitress mixed up my order, but corrected it without hesitation). I didn't expect much from a restaurant in a tourist village, but I left very satisfied! We ended up here after my husband vetoed my suggestion to hit up the famous fairmont banff springs castle breakfast buffet! I was so sad we didn't go there and was pouty the whole time at Melissa's....until I got my Pancakes!!!!!! I got the pancakes because the guy to my Left ordered it and it looked divine! The Negative: they only give you AUNT JEMIMA's maple syrup with your food... who the hell wants that crap? If you want REAL maple syrup, you have to pay an extra $2.50... that is unheard of! I'm sorry to give a negative review to a nice family establishment that's been running there for over 40 years, especially as that morning I ran the 40th anniversary of Melisa's road race and actually I was very happy with the organization of the run and also I placed sixth out of 88 runners in my age group. But the restaurant itself is far far far too expensive for what you got. Including tax and tip it was $13 for a very small grilled cheese, and their daily special sandwich which was just a sandwich for $17. Before tax and tip. So that's about $20 for just a sandwich. The prices were high enough that I literally only ordered for my sons and I just drank water which is ridiculous. I know it's in a tourist trap area but honestly, their profit margin must be insane. The interior though is very nice and I like the high ceilings in a log cabin and the flags. God knows how long it's been since anything was cleaned though- everything looked dusty and dingy. Omelette tasted like every other omelette I've tried ($13.95) Hash brown was overcooked but it wasn't even crunchy.. a large orange juice was half the size of my water cup but $3.50?!?! Side of salsa was $2.95.. it's the salsa that is sold in markets (the kind you eat with tortilla chips). Please is overpriced. For omelette, orange juice and side of salsa, total was $21.42. Service sucked because not once did the server come to our table on her own.. whether it was to take the order, or ask us if we needed refills, or give us our check. What a delicious beginning to our day! Warm wooden interiors give a relaxed feel for you to settle in and enjoy. Service was great, the food was perfect. The hash browns are wonderful, probably some of the best I've ever had -- they're not oily or undercooked, just perfectly approaching crispy. The chorizo benny was scrumptious -- the egg perfectly cooked, the hollandaise sauce perfected. The crab and asparagus omelette was delicious, hearty, but make sure you like cheese! read more

I came here for a family Breakfast, and later for a Joe Canadian Burger for Lunch (remember the Molson Commercial?). The bonus is eating and relaxing in this unique 1928 vintage landmark building. Melissa's offers good honest family food that is sometimes hard to find in tourist popular locale such as the Banff Town Site. This place is very kid friendly too. read more

Very pricy menu for food that was mediocre at best. I came in for breakfast with my boyfriend. I had the huevos rancheros with guacamole. My plate arrived with eggs, bagged guacamole, and shredded cheese melted on top. The shredded potatoes were soggy and had no seasoning. My boyfriend got the 6oz sirloin and eggs. He asked for it medium rare and the steak arrived completely brown and mushy. What sort of steakhouse can't even cook a steak medium rare? The bathrooms were disgusting too. There is absolutely no way this restaurant is #1 breakfast in Banff. Go somewhere else. read more

My husband and I stopped at Melissa's for late lunch on a Saturday. The restaurant wasn't crowded when we arrived, so got seated immediately. The restaurant looks small from the outside, but they have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. After perusing the menu, we ordered an omlette with asparagus and crab. I only saw wine in the drinks menu and wanted something else. They do have other cocktails, be sure to ask your waiter. I got a strawberry something and loved it. The omlette was served with hash, side of toasts and hollandaise sauce. The waiter also placed hot sauce and ketchup on our table. We loved everything on that plate! Service is very friendly and fast. Food is delicious. Cute ambiance. I highly recommend stopping at Melissa's for a meal when visiting Banff. read more

We were on the hunt for a hearty breakfast, which apparently in Banff is not that easy to find because it appears Canadians don't overstuff themselves in the mornings like some of us in the lower 48 do. Luckily we found Melissa's, which had some eggs and hash. I settled on the Chorizo Benny and a bowl of cream of celery soup. I loved both choices. The chorizo was handmade and loved the egg benedict. The cream of celery soup was pleasantly salty and had a great celery flavor. It was exactly what I was looking for. The coffee wasn't as strong as I like it but they kept it flowing. The service was great and the space is a woodsy diner that's been around for a few decades. If you're on the hunt for a heartier breakfast, this is the place for you. read more

Melissa's is one of the best places to eat in Banff. In 2003, we went there while vacationing. We went back to Banff in 2005, and this time a trip to Melissa's was on our itinerary! The place left that kind of impression on us. The waiters and waitresses here are awesome. They answered all our questions about the menu and always were courteous when coming by our table. The restaurant interior features a lot of wood, giving a very warm log cabin vibe that makes for a great atmosphere. The food is so good at Melissa's. The steak I ordered was probably my favorite I've ever had anywhere. If I ever find myself back in Banff, I'll definitely visit Melissa's again... maybe for breakfast, lunch and dinner! read more

The eggs benedict with ground chorizo were EASILY the best bennies I've ever had in my life. And I've had a lot. I'm still fantasizing about them. As a matter of fact, if I had the opportunity to go back to Banff National Park tomorrow, only instead of looking at soaring eagle wilderness I was forced to sit in Melissa's dark, old-school-steakhouse dining room and stare at nothing but plate after plate of delicious eggs benedict as I ate them for a week, I would not consider it a waste of my time. I've only eaten here once, so I can't vouch for many other dishes. I also got dessert: something called the "Brownie Explosion" or "Brownie Conniption" or something like that. The description was "don't ask...just get it!", but I wish I had asked, because it was just a mediocre brownie sundae in a mug. Go there for breakfast while you're in Banff. We went to Melissa's for basically a late supper. My husband and I split a veggie pizza with pepperoni on their flat crust which was delicious. It's a great place for kids. They have high chairs, boosters and a kids menu with crayons. My little guy had the kids burger and fries. Which he loved. I was really impressed with the staff, my son is only 2 and was getting a little impatient waiting to order. (it wasn't actually taking a long time - we were just having dinner later than usual). I told him we had to wait until the waitress came back and he could tell her. While we weren't paying attention he had caught the eye of the hostess and was trying to tell her what he wanted. However, the customer service ruined the experience for me.. maybe the server just didnt have her coffee yet. ‍Not impressed with the crepes and hashbrowns though. Nice option for a good traditional breakfast. It is outside of the Main Street in Banff so you get a bit of a better deal. After reading some reviews on Yelp, I decided to try the eggs Benedict from this place. It is a must. Beautifully done, just the right amount of sauce, you have the option of 1,2 or 3 eggs (depends on how hungry you are). The traditional breakfast is also a very good option, nice quantity of food. However I did not like the fact that the coffee is not included in the breakfast, you pay 3$ for it. Any breakfast place should have coffee included in whatever choice you get. Everything was absolutely delicious! We stopped in for supper, but couldn't decide on what to eat. We ended up getting 4 appies and sharing them. Large caeser salad; decent amount of dressing and croutons seemed to be home made. French onion soup; one of the best we have ever had! Broth was so flavorful, even if there wasn't a good portion of onions, cheese and bread, the broth alone made this soup wonderful!!! Mussels with garlic butter sauce, with a couple pieces of bread; perfectly cooked, only one was slightly gritty. Sauce was so good, my boyfriend was joking about drinking it :D. Last Escargot; amazing! Best we have had yet! Highly recommend. Supper was so good we went back for breakfast. We both had eggs benny. Boyfriend got home made chorizo sausage, which was very good. Nice spice and flavor with a bit of heat, but nothing overwhelming. I had the smoked salmon, which we get quite often at other places. This was most definitely the best smoked salmon benny yet!!! Hollandaise sauce was very good and smooth; eggs perfectly cook, and shredded hash browns are always good in my books :D :D. We also shared a fruit bowl, which had a wide variety of fruit. I was very surprised! Next time we are in Banff, we are definitely going back so we can try some entrees!!!! read more

Melissa's Missteak is a must eat in Banff if you're on a budget. Get one single four dollar pancake (because two is too much, one is more appropriate) and you'll be set! Now if you sit outside you might feel a little uneasy seeing your food come from the alley behind the restaurant but it should still be tasty. If you're curious about the meaning behind the name just ask the nice brunette hostess. I would tell you but you've gotta do things for yourself, I've already told you to get the pancake. read more

Our recent visit was very diappointing. For a saturday night they had run out of Prime Rib, Lobster tails and a few more items which is strange and would have been nice to know before we ordered dinner. I'm sure the IGA next door had both. The service was ok but the meal was very sad, Steak was tough, veggies were cold not even just warm but cold. Drinks were over priced and terrible. The security staff and bartender were rude to the point that we wanted to leave without finished our drinks. What kind of bar only accepts cash in todays world. After an active day of hiking and sight seeing in the mountains we were looking for a casual place to grab some food. The restaurant has a nice feel to it, very cottage-like and quaint. However our 15 minute, 4-person wait turned into a 45 minute wait while watching five parties of 3 and 2 enter long after us and be seated ahead of us. Once seated, the waiter was very kind and attentive. We ordered two pizzas and no appetizers. The wait time was approached 35 minutes before the 10 inch pizzas were served. The general food prices (outside of pizzas and burgers) seemed to be quite high for what the offerings included, but were not completely out of line. All in all, the food hit the spot. It is possible that we hit the restaurant on one of their off days. I wouldn't completely write off Melissa's Missteaks but our experience wasn't our best in Banff. read more
