Locally owned and operated, Mellow Mushroom was voted 2014 "Best Place for Pizza" in the Daily News' Best of Bowling Green as well as "Best Place for Happy Hour" which my partner, his family and I came for dinner last Monday. According to the owner, each Mellow establishment is designed in a unique art-filled environment. The exterior of the white building is painted with a multi-color sound wave with a Rock and Roll theme. Upon arrival, one can't help to notice the world's largest man-made mushroom standing 32 feet tall and spanning more than half of the main dining room. Our server was Sarah who was very attentive and friendly. As a Yelp check-in, they offered us the complimentary Pretzel Bites tossed in garlic butter and Parmesan. Served with beer cheese. As an entree, we ordered Holy Shiitake Pie (An olive oil and garlic base with roasted shiitake, button and portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella and creamy MontAmoré® cheese. Finished with fresh chives, shaved Parmesan, a garlic aioli swirl and a spritz of black truffle) and Kosmic Karma (Mellow red sauce covered with spinach, roasted tomatoes, mozzarella, fresh Roma tomatoes , pesto swirl and crumbled feta cheese) for sharing. The pies came out piping hot and smelled delicious. The crust was baked just right and not burnt. We got 2 large pizzas and it was $51. The price seemed a little steep but we had their pizza once before and it was good. However, this time the edge of the crust was so thick it looked like a small loaf of bread. That made the pizza even smaller and it was kind of small for a large anyway. It was good what little of the middle we could eat. But, not worth the price!! read more

The name certainly caught our attention and when we checked other reviews we decided to give this place a shot! We were very pleased. The place is decorated in "early hippie" With a little Peter Max thrown in. The decor sets the tone for a great experience. My husband is a pescatarian so we were glad that there were so many vegetarian options. He ordered the mushroom soup (of course) and it tasted marvelous. I ordered a small house salad and was glad I hadn't ordered a larger one, once I saw my slice of pizza! It covered the whole plate. I ordered the Italian sausage and meatball pizza- nice thin crust and very tasty red sauce and toppings. I found it very satisfying! My husband and I were traveling through the area on a road trip north. We spent a night in this town and we were hungry for dinner on a weekday evening. We split a large pizza and washed it down with a couple of beers. This place has a large selection of beer. We ordered the pizza half Holy Shitake and the other Veg Out. The Holy Shitake was a new combo for us and we really enjoyed it. We could not eat the whole pie in one sitting but it made a great lunch on the road the next day. Normally my husband and I would prefer a local restaurant over a chain, but yet we can't seem to stop frequenting Mellow Mushroom. Bottom line, their pizza is good. The crust is the perfect medium between thin and regular, being crunchy and flaky and yet soft at the same time. And they sprinkle their crust with a parmesan that gives it a nice, cheesy flavor. If you're looking for a place that has a lot of variety of out-of-the-box pizzas, this is your place. But don't underestimate the value of a simple pepperoni dipped in their house ranch. That's my personal favorite. A few tips for getting the best of your Mellow experience: 1. Their outdoor seating is phenomenal. It's situated in the downtown area, so you've got lots of traffic and people-watching that can be done. If it's sunny, they also have some large umbrellas that have a wingspan that can cover most of an entire table and keep you well shaded. 2. They have a trivia night on Tuesdays! We have yet to go, but I can't wait to give it a chance. 3. This is the best. On Monday evenings, they have $5 single-topping small pizzas and $10 single-topping large pizzas. We have been here several times since the last posting a year ago cannot say anything but good things about this place. The food the atmosphere the waitresses the manager coming by to see if everything's OK. Even if we order takeout and go pick it up the food is always delicious hot and ready. From the outside it looks like a casual hole in the wall restaurant but on the inside it's a nice family restaurant. The first time I went I got the pretzels and a large thin crust pepperoni for around $24. I would highly recommend going to melloe mushroom if you are in the mood for some good pizza or a delicious burger. read more

My favorite sandwich has been removed from the menu, so I can't give 5 stars. But, the pizza here is very good. This is my kid's fave restaurant & my husband loves their meat pizza (idk the name but the word meat is in the title) & I love the bruschetta. It's a great little dinner spot. There are things for people who like to eat outside the box (me) & for people who have unrefined picky palates (my family) so it's a win-win for me. Bring back the tempeh sandwich!! read more

The music drew us in. We were out walking and heard the loud outside band and had to stop. Apparently today April 12th, (saturday) was a special day Brews and Tunes..they are having live bands outside in the parking lot. We were seated immediately by some really nice servers. Our waitress was so friendly..She handed us a special draft menu for the days events. Tony chose a local draft called 3Floyds King Pale 6.5% alcohol and very hoppy. I took a drink. It was okay. Very milky and cloudy to me. Tony drank it but was NOT that impressed by it. I am so happy he is becoming more KEEN on trying new ales and brews and not sticking to the same old Budweiser. He is becoming more flexible and I am very nicely surprised by it. Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks..in his case, try new drafts... We ordered a small House Special pizza. It took them about 20 minutes. I ordered a soda. The place was very loud...we were seated by some unruly children...the parents were busy talking about a trip to third world country or something and how they enjoyed the simplicity of their culture and IGNORED the three kids hitting, pulling, pinching and screaming...between the ages of 6-10...too big to carry on in public like that...they should KNOW BETTER !!! The pizza was okay. Not the best. The crust was wheat based flour and thin sauce. It was not the best. We ate it. But now I know why I don't like Mellow Mushroom locally here in Nashville..Just not my cup of tea.. The decor inside was nice. I like it alot..but NOT going here again!!! Disappointing... pizza wasn't cooked fully. The cheese was hard, not melted, and not warm. The wings were okay tasting, but kinda burnt yet room temp! The service was not good either. Our first waiter came to the table very depressed and when we asked how he was he said "well, I'm here..." He was not friendly at all. This place is awesome. Great vibe, great pizza and 3 pages of beers on tap. We were searching for somewhere to get a bite after a show at SKyPAC and had trouble finding anything at the closer bars, so we rolled down to Mellow Mushroom a couple blocks away and got what we were looking for and more. Cory was the bartender and we had a great conversation with him. They had the College Football games on and we were able to get some food at 10:15. For being pretty big and having a college in town, BG shuts stuff down pretty early. Really appreciate the kitchen staff for being there til 11pm. We will definitely frequent this place. read more

I have eaten great gourmet pizzas in places such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City, but today I ate the best pizza I ever had, right here in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I had the "Magical Mystery Tour" Pizza. It is a pesto base pizza and crust with Button and Portobello Mushrooms, Mozzarella, Spinach, Feta and Jalapenos. My wife had the Red Skin Potato Pie and she said, "It was Great." We drove an hour from Owensboro just to visit Mellow Mushroom and was not disappointed. Five Star All The Way!!
