I'm a long time fan of Mellow Mushroom! I've been to their locations in Charleston, Columbia, and even Florence. I love Mellow for their constant great service and exceptional high quality pizza. I have to applaud them for making each location that they have very artsy and trendy, but uniquely different from each other. This location is no exception, they have a colorful piano outside near the door and creative drawings of a boxer and Edgar Allen Poe in their lobby. Past their lobby is their U shaped bar with TVs all around and then the main dining area with mostly red booths with wooden tables. I went here last week with some friends for Trivia Night on Tuesday, which is from 8 - 10 pm. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, with the top prize being a $50 gift card. Trivia night is very busy! There was a slight wait and there were over 10 teams playing trivia. The MC announcer guy was very good! His name was Bill and he asked and answered questions with a dry and sarcastic sense of humor that was hilarious and made for a very fun night. The Drinks: They serve their beer in GAUNTLETS!!! Enough said, you have to order a drink from here! They do have Happy Hour Specials, but we too late since we came after 7. We got the New South Lily the Great Imperial Stout and Victory Golden Monkey Tripel. Both were pretty good, but I would recommend the Golden Monkey because of the cooler name and lighter taste. The Food: We ordered their Pretzel Bites as appetizers and shared a large Thai Dye Pizza among my friends and I. I love the combination of curry, fresh basil, and sweet Thai sauce that makes this pizza a winner for me. My other personal favorite pizzas are the Mighty Meaty (if you like meat), Holy Shiitake Pie (if you like mushrooms and caramelized onions), and Rib Eye Pie (if you like steak). The large pizza was enough for my group of 5 to split with each person getting 2 slices. The pretzel bites were alright, but nothing special. The Service: Our waiter was really good at checking up on us and we didn't have to wait long to get our food and drink orders in. Besides the slight wait for a table, our food came out at a reasonable time and we never felt rushed or waiting for drinks for the two hours we were there. Overall, this place is awesome for anytime you get a pizza craving. Their trivia night is a lot of fun and I hope you get Bill as the announcer because that guy is hysterically funny! read more

Haven't been to a Mellow Mushroom in a few years. I left full and happy. This location is very unique inside. I was surprised when i walked in and the building really opened up. With a movie theme the decor was super cute. we were greeted with a passing "hello, you can seat yourself anywhere". We ordered the Bruschetta for an appetizer and it was delicious. I would definitely order that again. Our food came pretty quickly and the server was fare; our drinks could have been refilled and used dishes could have been removed. I would revisit the Mellow Mushroom if I had the opportunity. I took some pics because they have a cute movie theme but not sure what happened to them. I will edit if I find them. read more

Mellow Mushroom has always been one of my favorite restaurants. I went today for lunch, and the experience lived up to my expectations. I sat at the bar, and had a drink while deciding what to order. The new menu is huge, very detailed, and almost overwhelming. I wish they hadn't put the calorie count for everything-I felt so guilty about ordering anything! (Though I know this is good as it will deter me from ordering unhealthy options) I checked in on yelp and discovered the Lil Greek salad was complimentary with check in! It was delicious, as always. I love the Esperanza dressing! I ordered the Gourmet White, which they changed. I really like the new version, especially the ricotta, and little pieces of basil that top it off. The bartender is a fun girl who knows how to provide great customer service. So happy to have Mellow in the neighborhood! read more

First time in South Carolina, came out to visit my cousin whom suggested this spot for pizza. I was starving after my long flight and the moment we walked in, it smelled amazing. It took several minutes before someone acknowledged us at the front but once they did, we were seated right away. The place is decorated nicely and is very clean. Our server was really cool. We ended up ordering several dishes to try. Started with the chicken salad. The chicken was soft and flavorful. Coming with a side of carrots, celery, cucumber and very fresh tomatoes, drizzles with dressing, it was really really good! We ordered two different pizzas. The smalls were pretty chunky and can easily feed two if you had an appetizer. The pizzas were delicious. Prices were a little higher than I'm used to but overall this is a great spot, server was attentive and I'll def be back. read more

My last review was three years ago, and Mellow Mushroom has improved tremendously since then. Over our last few visits, we've received our food very quickly, and it was hot with all orders accurate. We tried the hummus appetizer the last time we were there, and we were really impressed. It was great for a non-Mediterranean restaurant. Kosmic Karma is my favorite pizza by far. The service has been great in all of my recent visits, with servers keeping our drinks full, getting our checks quickly, checking on us, and doing their job- even if the restaurant is a little busy. Also, this is a fun place to come on Saturdays and watch football on the many TVs. Parking is still an issue, but that is the case everywhere in Avondale. It's not something that Mellow Mushroom- or any other Avondale business- can help. If you go at lunch, you can usually snag a spot behind the building, at least! read more

Stopped in here for lunch with some friends around 2:00 on a Monday. The service was friendly. The appetizers were the best part in my opinion. We shared spinach dip and bruscetta. I had one piece of pizza that my friends ordered, and to be fair, it's not a kind I would normally order. It was a mediterranian pizza. It was just okay, nothing overly impressive. For dessert we shared a warm cookie with ice cream, this was the least impressive part of the meal. The first one was actually so hard we all stuck our utensils in it, like stabbed it, and you still couldn't break it off. The server noticed, laughed, and got us a new one, so that was nice. Revisited after a couple years to dig into my absolute favorite red skinned potato pie! Used to get this pizza twice a month. Was beyond excited to order this as take out to surprise my husband who has never had it before. When the waiter handed it to me, it felt too light, felt like they handed me one slice! Well, my husband and I began our din din journey at East Bay Deli, where we were ignored. So after standing there for about 5 minutes we decided to leave and come to Mellow. Glad we did, because I really liked this one. Much better than the one at the outlets IMO. I love the layout of the place. We sat at a booth, and I am a bit like Sheldon Cooper. I have to have a good spot so I can see everything around me. Great ambiance. I'm picky about that too... We went on a Thursday night so it wasn't very loud or crowded but can imagine that it would be on a weekend night. The layout of the place can accommodate that. Our server was great. I think her name was Ciara (on the receipt). Super attentive, nice, and prompt! And she had a good memory too, as I mentioned that I had a freebie coupon at the beginning and she remembered to factor that into the bill without us reminding her. I always get the lil chef salad and share a pizza with whoever I go with. I love the salads here. If you want a great salad for a great price, go to a Mellow. Our pizza was good too (my hubs is Italian so he has some other faves at a other places but I like Mellow's pizza just fine). I also love their pretzels! Mellow Mushroom in Avondale is my favorite of all the locations around Charleston! Beautiful old theater building that's been renovated into a spacious and very cool pizza haven. The layout is very cool with the central bar, TV's and crazy trippy artwork on the side walls! They have a balcony with window view of central Avondale area and a few TV's upstairs too. The pizza is by far my favorite in town! Chewy delicious crust and a variety of deliciously interesting specialty pizzas. My favorite is the Buffalo Chicken but I like all of them! I recommend the bruschetta app as it is authentic and delicious! Salads are hearty and always a good pair with a pizza. If you have room for dessert go for the chocolate brownie sundae which is amazing! Have always had good service at this location and never a long wait. Mellow Mushroom is a great staple in any town; even with the hoards of gourmet pizza shops opening up, Mellow Mush is one of the standards. I like the no frills, laid back vibe and Avondale's is my favorite location. It's located inside a building which was once a theatre so that's awesome. The decor is funky and cool. Parking is awful because it's Avondale. Worth the headache though. Always check out their Restaurant Week menu (it's always extended through Avondale Restaurant Week, too). Great deals for 2 people. I am knocking one star off for when they switched up their salad bowls to those funky slanted bowls which you end up not getting the same amount as in the past when they used the regular bowls. Yes, the bowl is cool, but you don't get as much! And the price of the Little Greek of Chef or whichever "Little" salad is pretty hefty, so I want the bang for my buck. I no longer order this salad like I used to which is sad because it's great. All pizzas are great. I've never had one I don't like. Also, Mellow Mushroom's ranch is literally the BEST RANCH I've ever had in my life and I have yet to be able to get anyone to disclose the recipe. TIP!
