I particularly like this location of Mellow. They always do a good job of crating a unique space when they take over a building and this one is my favorite I've seen so far. The building was an old theater and they even have a Mezzanine (second floor dining area). The bar is huge and the location in Avondale is perfect for post pizza bar hopping. For Pie's the Mighty Meaty is probably my favorite but the Philosophers Pie and the Buffalo Chicken are delicious too. Also, don't knock the Chicken Caesar Salad pizza till ya try it. They always have a great craft beer selection and they currently have the Imperial IPA that won the homebrewing competition out at Holy City Brewing on tap. Because it was happy hour, I got mine for a dollar. Woot Woot! Can't turn down one dollar craft beer. Especially when trying that beer was the main reason I decided to eat there yesterday. I have been living next to this MM for almost 8 years and have taken family and friends here. I loved ordering a pizza for one and walking down to grab it as they are a couple of blocks from my home. Today is the final straw. In the last year their customer service has gone off the rails. There was a very rude female bartender who insisted after placing my order I pick up at bar a few months ago. In all the years, that never happened to me. Entering and going to bar, she ignored me for the longest while she did everything else. As a server/bartender years ago, it is important to at least acknowledge customers. I saw her two more times and had the utmost worse dealings with her and her snarky remarks. Today, well today, I called 4 times and each time I was hung up on without a word. They just picked up and then hung up. I went down there thinking they were slammed or closed. Nope dead inside. All the servers are standing around the back area. I asked to speak to a manager and to explain my experience and dismay. He just wanted to know if I wanted to order. I left. Once home, less than two minutes, I called again. Hoping maybe my phone carrier was being stupid. Nope, they immediately answered. I hate that I have to severe ties with this place after years of amazing experiences, but till they find better servers and managers, this place is dead to me. I really enjoyed myself at this Mellow Mushroom - its quirky and unique like all mellows and had great service! I actually went for a wine and canvas class upstairs but enjoyed the restaurant itself very much. Our server, Kate, was great (rhyme not indented but ). She always had a smile on and was so sweet when taking orders and refilling drinks. Parking was a bit of a challenge which I found surprising at 5pm on a Wednesday. Been coming to Mellow Mushroom Avondale for years and have always enjoyed it. The secret is in the crust I think. They are always accommodating when substituting toppings on their specialty pies. Beer of the month is a steal at $3 and they have other happy hour specials as well. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because it seems they've been reigned in by the franchise and have lost some of their freedoms to do cool events and programs. The poor review is and is not about the pizza. We all know Mellow Mushroom has great food. However, lesson learned...do not put expectations on a restaurant they are not able to meet. Or align with their business model. Mellow Mushroom is not in the business of pizza delivery. First experience with Uber eats delivery and I got a $50 pizza that looked like it had been returned to the kitchen, re-boxed and sent out for delivery. So frustrating. Huge shout out to the Mellow Mushroom for opening its doors during the snowstorm of 2018. Walked in to a super friendly staff working with only a few fresh ingredients and a bar full of drinks. Pizza was the only option which was fine by me since it came out hot and delicious. A ton of beers available on tap and despite there being one bartender the service was pretty quick. Ill post another review about the full menu another day because I'll definitely be back after such an awesome experience when most other places were closed. read more

We waited close to fourty before we were even seated. once seated not one waitress came to our table. couldn't Tess who worked there as they were all dressed differently. Just like the other Mellow Mushrooms I've been to in other states. It seemed to be fairly busy the couple nights I went, but the service was great, and I didn't have more than a 10 minute wait when waiting for a table. One night I sat at the bar and had a couple "Golden Goose" mules that were excellent. The different pizzas I enjoyed here were also great. The "Wild in Havana" pizza is great if you want to try something different and you generally enjoy Cuban sandwiches. read more

Had a holiday party for photographers last night, and this was my first time actually eating at this location even thought I am always passing by. I never knew they had an upstairs dining area! Perfect spot for 60ish people and the servers did their best to accommodate so many people. The pizza crust bites and the greek salad was really good and well presented. I enjoyed the servers great attitudes, but I instantly want to forget wasting lunch here just because I had groupon or whatever. I had not been to Mellow Mushroom in a while so I was looking forward to it. It was my first time at this location. This location is big. And tall. And loud!! We had a group of 16 heading in around 6:30 on Sunday. I don't think they take reservations but my friend had called and let them know we were heading in and they had prepared tables for us. Heading out in a big group is always fun but unfortunately now a days can turn into more of a headache than fun. Waiting for drinks. Waiting for food. Trying to find the server. Separate checks. U get my drift, right? But not the case last night! Stephanie was on the ball. She handled our big party of drinkers, and eaters perfectly. For food and drink I tried the St. Mellow off the Home Grown Picks section of the menu. "The perfect patio drink for a hot summer day" We weren't on the patio, and it's not technically summer yet, but as U all know it's already HOT here! I let everyone give it a taste and the consensus was, yes, it's refreshing. But also concluded that it is a little too sweet to drink more than one. For food I ordered the Caesar pizza. (I think it was off a location specific menu for the Avondale MM.) It was a garlic and olive oil base with pesto chicken, lots of cheese, and topped with a Caesar salad and Roma tomatoes. It was fabulous!! The chicken was so juicy! I don't know if it was cage free, farm fresh (Seinfeld lovers will get that) or what kind of chicken it was, but it was delicious. And then they put a salad on top. Talk about two birds with one stone! I only had one slice b/c I wasn't that hungry but I'm totally regretting giving the left overs to my friend. Food: Meatballs flavorful but a little dry. Nice presentation. Garlic pretzels were soft, flavorful, and tasty. Spinach salad was very good. Nice flavor. Gluten free pizza leaves some to be desired. I would not recommend it. Try andolinis for that. Bacon pizza was good. Lots of meat. Service: Reid was our server. She was attentive, a little busy, wasn't very friendly (didn't smile much or start convos but she was busy), I'd say she wasn't rude. Overall she did a good job for a party of 10! Atmosphere: Unique. Hipster-esk. 90s. Charleston trendy. Lots to fiest your eyes on. Conclusion: Great for any occasion. Groups, dates, or solo you will find a neat place to grab a semi expensive pizza and beer. But, if amazing food is what your hankering for & dont care about the atmosphere then try a different place for this food genre. This place delivered well for the Mellow franchise, and was a good experience all around. We came out for dinner, and we did have some issues finding parking in the vicinity. There are several restaurants and bars nearby, and we had to circle repeatedly and then park a few blocks away and walk in. Once there, we got a table quickly and service was spot on. Nice beer selection, good pizza, and the server checked in on us regularly - and timed the order of our to-go pizza well so that it was ready when we were finishing up and getting ready to head home. Manager also made a point of stopping by our table and checking in, ensuring we didn't need anything. Great experience, and solid pizza. read more

I go to eat pizza once every 10 days, my cheat meal. I go to the same place, but figured I'll try this place once and see...my friends wanted to try it. My pizza took 45mins to be ready, was burned to crisp(black cheese and crust tasted like dust). Complained, dont know why they be taught it out to begin with, but they took it back. Great dinner experience here last weekend!! I didn't realize how much seating this location had. We were seated upstairs and had great service throughout the night! I've been to their other locations and always forget how good their food and service is; I definitely need to go more than once a year! We ordered the large salad, and it was more than enough for three people to split! We also had the pretzel bites with cheese - delicious - even better that they were free with the yelp check-in!! I had a calzone with pepperoni- huge and packed with lots of toppings. Could almost split between two people with smaller appetites! My group also ordered a pizza and loved both flavors!! Good pizza! Got it delivered via Uber eats while staying on James Island. Super convenient when there's actually not that many delivery places nearby. Loved that I could customize any toppings I want. It's $1 per basic topping to add onto a cheese pizza. A 10 inch pizza was enough for my husband to finish on his own with a normal appetite. I feel that this Mellow Mushroom can be a bit inconsistent when it comes to getting good service, but overall, I think it's a good location. Unfortunately, I feel that Mellow Mushroom has changed the formulation of their crust. It used to be more crispy and chewy. Now it's softer, like wheat bread. I would recommend Evo in N. Charleston if you like the crispier, thinner crust pizza, but it's more expensive. Zombie Bob's in West Ashley serves cheap pizza, but maybe not as flavorful as Mellow Mushroom or Evo. I would say if you haven't had Mellow Mushroom, it's worth a try. read more

Great atmosphere on a Thursday night. Lindsay was an awesome bartender and the bar seemed full of regulars. My friends and I started with the bruschetta and changed a few of the pizza toppings on the Maui Wowi and the Cosmic Karma. They were accommodating. After we had already ordered, I saw our bar neighbor with some amazing looking wings, so I ordered a half order of Thai Chili flavored wings. The wings here are baked and are great quality. I'm not sure if it was an aesthetic thing, but I received all flats and my neighbor had all drums. Fine with me! :-) I joined the beer club, and we'll definitely be back. read more

Located in historic Avondale beside Gerald's Tire and an old laundromat that forbids you to use their lot for anything but laundry, Mellow Mushroom is the kind of place you go to where time just flies by and next thing you know, you're slurring your words and going to the restroom every five minutes. I can't tell you how many times I've gone here to "pick up a pizza" only to stay for 6 beers and entirely forget about my order. The first thing you'll notice about MM is the bar. It's enormous! Big enough for spreading all your drinks on but small enough for you not to get lost to and from the restroom. And YES, the rumors are true! They can make you a double martini, extra dirty. There's nothing worse than the wait between drinks, and the wonderful bartenders at MM do their best to ensure there's no brakes. Not only that, but occasionally a bartender will leave you their number, and next thing you know, you're receiving raunchy bathroom pics at work during that serious meeting where you're told your job is on the line. Talk about an afternoon delight! The nice thing about MM's food menu is that pizza is right at your fingertips, and you don't have to drive anywhere to eat when you realize you've had too many drinks and have to make that all important choice between eating or throwing up. For added pleasure, order the pretzel - it comes with creamy sauce to dribble down your chin while take it in your throat. MM gets 5 stars because of it's location, cheap prices, liberal alcohol servings and for sticking to the motto "the customer is always right." I'm proud to say I've never been cut off there and am confident I never will be! read more

Weather getting to go, sitting at the bar or dining in with a big fun group under the giant Old school projector it's always a blast! The pizza did take a while to come out, but it was absolutely delicious so just go into it knowing you'll wait a little bit for your pizza. Totally worth it though note: the "thin crust" is more like regular crust, and the "regular" is thick and bubbly. I'm so disappointed in my recent order of a "build your own" pizza. Mellow has been one of my faves since my first experience with them at UGA in Athens GA in 2002. I was thrilled when they came to my hometown of Richmond, VA and all of my subsequent towns since then. I placed the order with Über Eats and received my pizza about an hour later. Upon delivery, I noticed that the box was not sealed. There was a sticker across the opening, but the receipt was placed under it so it blocked the sealing of the box. Not good during this time of a pandemic, especially, but not good at any time; it could easily be contaminated or tampered with before delivery. I opened the box and smelled a burnt odor but we each tried a piece. Upon further inspection, we noticed the entire pie was burned on the bottom and along the circumference. At that point, I notified Über Eats who refunded my order. As I was discarding the rest of the pizza, I smelled a very strong odor, almost like goat meat where the grilled chicken was. That made me even more nauseous. I will not order from them again. read more
