Great beer selection but I wish the bartenders were more knowledgeable on what they were serving. They also have some really great pizzas, and although they use quality ingredients and toppings, I'd still say the pies are a little overpriced. They have other more affordable options that I haven't gotten around to trying yet too. Beer is priced ok, not great. Atmosphere is cold, I'd sit outside if you have the option. Worth a stop though. This restaurant has a fun 60s industrial vibe. The pizza is always amazing, the service is good and the bathrooms are clean.

The food is nothing short of magnificent! Tonight I thoroughly enjoyed a $4 beer flight, all flights are $4 and all drafts under 7% alcohol are $3 on Wednesday's. Food wise I had the mushroom soup which had phenomenal flavors of red wine and was topped with sautéed mushrooms and scallions. I highly recommend it. Also on the table was their delicious cheesy bread with robust marinara. The convenience of being able to split our medium pizza into the two specialties my boyfriend and I craved was definitely a plus! The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Went to have a pizza at Mellow Mushroom tonight - I ordered a specialty pizza, when it arrived it was not what I was thinking it was going to be. I tried it and realized it was not for me. Our waitress came over and asked how we were doing, I told her my wife was enjoying her pizza, but mine was not what I'm use to. I typically eat pizza with red sauce and this one was made with an olive oil sauce. She quickly scooped up the remaining pizza and offered me an exchange. Since I was already loving the slice my wife shared, I asked for another one to match. Our waitress quickly exchanged and we left very happy. Congratulations Mellow Mushroom for entrusting your team to make this kind of a decision. I am a satisfied customer and will certainly return. HORRIBLE SERVICE. We stopped here on our way home from a day in Boone/Blowing Rock. My goddaughter wanted Mellow Mushroom in Blowing Rock but we decided to wait. Wish we hadn't! We were surprised when we got there around 7 on a Saturday and were seated right away. There was a large party on one side of us and a party of 2 on the other side. The large party was getting waited on well but the waitress never spoke a peep to us. The party of 2 finally got waited on but the waiter never spoke to us. Finally my friend went to hunt down someone who took our drink orders. After we had our drinks a guy finally came up and said he was going to be our waiter now, he didn't know we were there!!! Perhaps he had been getting mellow...Of course we were ready to order after waiting so long. He took our order and disappeared. We were then taking bets on whether we would even get our food. After a long time and I was ready to flag someone down about my salad, someone other than our waiter came with my salad. We finished the salad and waited longer for the pizza. Again, someone other than our waiter brought out the pizzas and they were quite attentive. Said they were going to bring us plates and napkins and immediately returned with them. After we were halfway through our pizza, our waiter finally showed again and asked how everything was. We said great - the food was great! Never saw him again until I called out to him to get our check. Thank the lord we had cash or it would have taken another half hour to get our cards back. The place was not to capacity and we saw plenty of waitstaff. Many of them seemed to be running around confused and we saw quite a few spending too much time at the bar. When we asked someone other than our waiter for a box, we were told it was behind us, to grab ourselves. I did notice our waiter was waiter on the patio as well as us - and we were way inside by the kitchen! So perhaps this is partly a management issue, because why would you have sections all over the place? Whatever the case, I'm not local and won't be back. read more

My family goes here quite often and we love it! The waiters and waitresses are always really helpful and patient with my husband because he always takes a while to decide on a beer. I would recommend them anyway! Tuesday's are fun because the have trivia! read more

Mellow Mushroom always delivers and this was no exception. Pizza took a while to come out but was a quality pie.

Our entire experience lasted 3+ hours. Originally we were told it would be 30 minutes for a wait (we had a party of 10 with 2 children under the age of 3). After they ended up giving our table away, we were finally sat around the 60 minute mark. Once we were seated it took 20 minutes of no service before we finally asked for the manager. We were given free appetizers, placed our order and were told that they were short staffed in the kitchen, so the food would be be out in about 45 minutes. During this wait period we witnessed one server quit, as well as SEVERAL tables getting up and walking out due to poor service. Our food ended up taking an hour and a half, and by this time it was 9:00 pm and the young children with us needed to go home. Because of this we took our food to go. It's understandable to have slow service when you are super short. However, it is absolutely ridiculous when you are in a pizza establishment for 3+ hours. Kudos to the manager who acted as a bar tender, waitress AND cook. And to top off a fantastic night, a couple in our party told an incoming couple that they were short staffed in the kitchen so the wait would be a little long. There was no malice in their statement, just trying to give a heads up incase they needed to get a somewhat fast meal. When the couple asked the hostess about it, she replied with "don't listen to them, they're just angry people." How classy. read more

Fun atmosphere and good food. It takes a while to get your food, but they make it to order so I'm cool with that. Perfection takes time! We prefer to get smaller sized pizzas so the kids get their plain cheese while we get the usual house special. Trivia night is fun with the family too. read more

From California...was looking for fresh salads and good pizza. Went during off hours. Quiet. Nice bar area. Service great. Ordered the mushroom pizza...best pizza I have ever had. The Capri appetizer was fantastic-fresh tomatoes, baby mozzarella and fresh basil drizzled with balsamic vinegar and a field green salad on the side. Also tried the garlic spiced hummus with vegetables. Could have been a whole meal in itself. Later in the day, the restaurant filled and was noisy, but no one seemed to mind. There is TV and outside dining. Parking lot is filled most days at lunch and dinner. read more

Let me start off by saying that we went because it was my birthday. They made a small mistake on the pizza I ordered and instead of just saying we have to wait on a new pizza, they gave us the messed up pizza, a brand new pizza, didn't charge us for either pizza and upgraded my free birthday dessert to any dessert I wanted on the menu, free of charge. Enjoyed the evening celebrating my granddaughters birthday. The enjoyable part was spending time with family. From a dining experience, the food was good; the service was poor. I know large groups can be difficult, but the place was not very crowded. The food did take longer than expected so the appetizers (which were delicious) were long gone. The waiter did not take very good care of us. We had to ask for simple things like straws long after drinks were served. And he left all the plates on our table. I asked for him to remove this huge stack of plates and pizza pans we had made so we could celebrate with birthday cake. He only took the pizza pans off the top and NEVER took the plates away. The pizzas were good and hot but not outstanding. And we really enjoyed the balloon lady as we had some teens and toddlers with us. I'd go back but no time soon. read more

Waiter continuously kept coming to the table giving some kind of estimate for our meal and was never even close. Over an hour ago he told us it would be 5-10 minutes. We have been talking about coming here since they opened, we're talking years. Well we finally went. We ordered the mighty meaty and the great white. Neither was very good and not worth the $50.00 it cost. 2 pizzas(1 small, 1 medium), cheesebread, small salad, 1 beer, 2 cokes, and a child milk. Definitely won't go back. I'd rather have a papa murphys take n bake. Great white had no flavor. So much ricotta thats all you taste, and it was poor quality ricotta. Sauce with the cheese bread was lacking. They recommended the signature Esparza dressing for the salad, awful. I didn't try the mighty meaty, but it's sitting in my refrigerator, the meat on it looks gross. My husband said it sucked. He didn't like the crust, and he said the ground beef and bacon were way over cooked and the ham tasted funny. Don't know if I want to try it. Lol Sorry Mellow Mushroom, I really had high hopes. If the pizza had been good, we wouldn't have minded the 50.00 bill. BTW service was good. read more

Terrible experience, extreme lack of service and hospitality. Very disappointing! We arrive at approximately 1220pm on Sunday July 8th, to a not so busy restaurant. We were told that their was however a 20min wait to be seated outside. This was not a problem, but should have been the precursor to what was to come. Waited 45min and we were finally seated. We all say down, a table of 5, and once again waited another 20min to even be greeted by our waitress, Madi. When she arrived she asked to take our drink order and we decided to help out and place our lunch order as we were already prepared to do so. Order was placed and after yet after 25 min had still not received so much as our drinks. One of us went inside to request our waitress as she had not returned, and left us sitting basically with nothing. She came out with our drinks, and apologized stating she was "dealing with something." Here's the kicker, she also stated she had "just put in your food order"!! After over an hour and a half we just received our drinks and were told our food order was just put in! Combined with the fact that we had only seen our waitress twice now!!! Total lack of service, and hospitality, not to mention a complete waste of our time. Needless to say we picked up, and informed her we were leaving. . . I hope this place is able to get their act together and retrain their staff. Especially this waitress Madi. Very disappointed. One star as zero was not an option. . . read more

After eating many times at the Mellow Mushroom in Blowing Rock, I was quite excited to learn that we were getting one in Hickory. My enthusiasm was short lived. Since we were a large group we had called ahead for seating. It was a bit busy for a weeknight although not nearly booked to capacity. After 20 minutes of standing crammed in the lobby, we asked about the wait and were told, "We are trying to arrange it so that all of you can sit together." We were seated 40 minutes after arriving even though the crowd was about half capacity. The drink order was taken soon after we sat down and our beverages arrived within minutes. Once we placed our food order the wait began in earnest. The last person in our party received his pizza at 8:50 PM. (An hour and fifty minutes after we first arrived.) He had ordered a 10" pie and instead got a larger version of the same pizza. He explained that this must be someone else's food because it was the wrong size and the response was, "No, it's yours. It must have spread out during cooking." Really? Good to know. Next time I'll order a medium and expect a large... Other than the wait, all seemed pleased with the taste of their meals. I ordered a steak and cheese calzone. Was surprised at just how large it was when it arrived. (Must have spread out during cooking.) In that mass of cheese, peppers, and onions, I found exactly two pieces of meat that looked like wadded up slices of roast beef. Not sure if this is standard practice but the sparse amount of meat in my calzone was definitely disappointing. Seriously. MM - Hickory could be a great restaurant. The staff is friendly although there seem to be a bit too many of them rushing about with little discernable purpose. The place is clean and the food is decent although, unless it's free, I can't think of any meal that is worth an hour wait. Next time I want Mellow Mushroom, I will make the trip to Blowing Rock or Asheville. Been there many times and on the most crowded day, never waited more than 30 minutes for an order. Unless there's vast improvement in turning orders I won't go back to MM Hickory. read more

The pizza here definitely feels like I'm eating a better quality product, and it's the only pizza place I would ever consider ordering a sandwich from. I'm just a huge fan of places that serve Tempeh, anyway, so that is definitely a plus! read more

The food is always good but with over an hour waiting for food doesn't make for a happy family dinner. If you want to eat make sure you get an appetizer to hold you over for your food to get to you. Have always loved Mellow Mushrooms, but not this one! Went on a Sunday afternoon, and our party had sandwiches and salad. We could not eat the food because the onions smelled and tasted so bad. This could have been forgiven, but the manager working did nothing to remedy this situation. He said the onion tasted fine to him and gave no apology. I have never heard of a restaurant treating customer's like this. Do not judge all Mellow Mushrooms by this review. From Georgia, to Charlotte they are usually excellent. I met with some friends earlier this week to eat. I have a gluten allergy so I didn't expect too much from a Pizza shop. I created my salad which was spinach and turkey. I was quite disappointed to see the turkey that was thrown on top of my salad looked like deli sandwich meat you could purchase at your local grocery store for two dollars. I could have easily recreated that same salad for around $1.00 at my house. Very disappointed and do not plan on eating there again. I want to add my friends enjoyed the pizza. I'm just overall upset about the 'turkey' topping they added on my salad (Come on, for real? Deli meat? And you're gonna charge around $7.00?). No offense, but McDonald's has better, cheaper gluten free salads than them (Grilled turkey on top of a side salad for example). read more

In the past I have given Mellow Mushroom 5 stars. Today, I am giving 4 stars which I will explain in just a moment. First of all, the service was excellent as always. The place was clean, service was timely and the food we had there during the visit was fantastic. We also placed a to-go order in addition to dining in. The to-go order contained 2 pizzas and a hoagie. The reason for only four stars this time is that the crust on both pizzas was very over done. They weren't burnt but they were as close as you could get without burning. The hoagie was great. Anyone can have an off day or less than perfect. We are still happy campers and will be back :D read more

I try to visit the Mellow Mushroom restaurants in my travels this one is my favorite the staff makes the difference, great place to go.

Arrived before 6 pm on SAT night. Told wait would be more than1hour. Luckily found two seats at the bar. Ordered drinks and 2 calzones. After 45 minutes, waitress tells us our order was just being started in the kitchen. 15 minutes later waitress brings a complimentary appetizer. Twenty minutes later we're told the kitchen ruined our order and they started cooking it again. Manager came by and said he would pay for a round of drinks or discount the bill. This never happened! Finally, 1 hour and 45 minutes after placing our order we received our food. Food was very good, but not worth the wait. If it wasn't for a good waitstaff, drinks, and the NFL playoff game on TV, the experience would have been a total bust. read more

I have been a mellow mushroom fan for many years and I'm so disappointed that I have to write a bad review. This is the second time that I visit the Hickory location and both times I've experienced bad customer service. On my second visit on a Saturday night, the place was busy so I expected to wait for a table. After waiting over half an hour to get seated, I'm ready to order a pizza and I'm told by our server that the wait for pizza orders is 45 minutes. I tell the server that they should tell people at the door what to expect, and instead of an apology, she replies with an attitude that is not her fault and if we are ready to order or not. Ended up ordering a hoagie and salad but waited 25 minutes to get my order and another five minutes to track a waitress to get us silverware. I could have spent my waiting time driving home and going to our local Mellow mushroom where I know that the service is great. read more
