We've been going to Mellow Mushroom, in McKinney, for years. We live in Plano, so we pass by several Pizza competitors, because we like the food choices and normally the service. About two years ago, we had bad service, but the manager became aware, addressed it promptly and did more than was reasonable to make us happy. We never even had a chance to complain, because the manager was on the ball. Today, the food was as good as normal, but service and organization was horrible. Wife's food brought out and my son and I are left with nothing. By the time my son's food arrives, my wife is finished. My food finally arrives a minute later, but it has tomato and green pepper, which I specifically said to exclude. Server acknowledge and takes it back to the kitchen. Long store shortened, I'm still waiting for food and my son is finished. I have a whole pizza in my refrigerator and was given the privilege of paying a ticket with no adjustment for their errors. Last third of my visit, I was sipping on melting ice in my ice tea glass. Final insult. Wife is getting very upset and decides to leave before she says something she shouldn't. Heard a server ask another server, "why is she being such a b_____?". Definitely not something a server should ever say where a customer can hear. read more

I had never been to a Mellow Mushroom despite many people raving. We happened upon it on opening night, and they were definitely ready for business. Our server Nathon was excellent and treated our kids like family, paying great attention to them. We tried the gluten free pizza, which was really good. Some friends and employees raved about this place, so we thought we would give it a try. First, we were going here primarily for pizza and second, we did not know it was a chain. We usually go to Cadillac Pizza just down the street and that is the standard by which we judged this place. Service was very typical of the name of the restaurant. The staff was so mellow that service was pretty sloooow and casual. Interesting attire on the staff. However, everyone was very friendly and the place is very clean. Huge restrooms! Pizza was thick crust and done in a regular restaurant pizza oven. No wood fired, thin crust here. The pizza was very expensive and reminded us of the stuff they serve at Costco for $1.50 a slice. There were two of us with one large pizza, a salad, one glass of wine and iced tea and a small pizza to take home to our son. $80 seemed on the high side?? It looked to us that this place might be all about the bar scene and food was secondary to the business plan. I may be wrong, but that is the feeling we got. So, I know pizza is a very subjective thing but for our taste we will continue to prefer the wood roasted thin crust version that is not available here. read more

Went to the Mellow Mushroom on Tuesday evening. Place felt busy but it seemed the place was lacking staff. Took a little bit for a hostess to seat us - only a couple in front of us. We sat in the back area and it appears 1 server was handling the whole area. Service was very slow. The pizza orders were correct but the sandwich that was ordered was not. When we sent it back it seemed it would be re-made right away. The server admitted to hitting the wrong button. After another 20 minutes the sandwich finally came out - but by this time most of the table had finished their food. It also took forever to get a side of ranch dressing. I felt since the mistake, delay to correct that the sandwich that this item would be taken off the bill or at least half - nope. As much as I like their gluten free pizza - may need to find a place with more bang for my buck. The food was very good but the downfall is lack of servers and slow service. read more

I visited Mellow Mushroom with a group of girlfriends Saturday night. Although our server was very friendly, the wait on food was crazy. Most waited about 45mins for their pizza to come out. Unfortunately, I waited over an hour as my pizza was dropped in transit to the table. Since most of the ladies were already done with their food while I waited, the server passed out checks. By the time we were seated, the initial lunch rush had ended and the restaurant much less crowded. Even them, it took well over another hour to receive our ONE pizza. The staff kept apologizing, but didn't do anything to to compensate for the long wait like offer to bring us free drinks or a quick-y appetizer. Well, my fiancé came from Puerto Rico to spend New Year's Eve with me. We came to your restaurant and the bartender was EXCELLENT and he makes amazing Bloody Mary. We were waiting for our appetizer and the RACIST GM BITCH came to the table and ask us for our ID's for no reason and told my fiancé that she can't accept his ID. I just can't believe how she treated us, and the way she was talking to us, it was obvious that she didn't want us there, she was not even our server. She ruined the good time that we were having. On a separate note, what do you think of when you hear pretzel? If you said soft and doughy, you're a normal human being...and should avoid ordering the pretzels here. They have a great beer selection...but so do most places now. You know what also doesn't help? Fruit flies harassing you during the entirety of your dinner. I mean, they liked the food. Very nice menu selections but as of today they are working on up-dating the menu. Since I'm from KCMO I compare pizza to Waldo's. The crust here was just to tough on the outside and that is one of my favorite areas of a pizza. The atmosphere here is good and the service just the right amount of friendly. Checked this place out without reading the reviews (rare for me), and I'm glad we did! Great little place, and my first time to dine at any Mellow Mushroom location. Danielle (sp?) took good care of us and was happy to let me sample a few beers on the tap wall. My wife and I enjoyed the Thai Dye pizza - fantastic! The kids mac-n-cheese was well received by the kids, who also enjoyed bites of our fantastic pizza. The other pizza ordered at our table (the potato skin one) was also thoroughly enjoyed. A pitcher of the almighty 512 Pecan Porter graced our beer snob palettes - MAN I love that beer. So happy they had 512 on tap. Wonderful. Last but not least, we left with a couple of fun t-shirts (thanks for the help picking those out, Mr Manager - dang, forgot his name, but awesome guy - enjoyed talking beer with him). Lastly, we sat near the street, and that side of the restaurant has garage doors that they open during nice weather. And it was nice! Great touch. All in all, a top-notch experience. read more

We went around noon on a weekday and we waited by the host stand for a solid couple minutes. We saw there were a few people sitting further in the restaurant. My husband and I read the room, maybe during this time it's self seated because lunch on a weekday might mean fewer servers on the floor. We sat at a booth to maintain social distance from other patrons (trying to be considerate so that restaurant staff don't have to worry). And we were greeted by a server who said "you're actually supposed to wait at the host stand to be seated". Okay, he was kind about it but where were you a couple minutes ago when we were waiting over there. Anyway it just made for kind of an awkward dining experience, I don't think the server was pleased with us. Server, if you're reading this...we really didn't mean to make things weird, we just weren't sure how things worked and tried to be proactive after waiting. Peter actually ended up waiting on our table. He was also bartending and made sure to not forget about us. Tipped him $10 on a $15 tab because he was hustlin hard with a great attitude. At the end of the day, the service industry doesn't get enough credit and recognition. We love this place and it'll never lose our support. Service was absolutely terrible. Wait staff took 30 minutes after taking our order for a standard calzone to inform us that the kitchen didn't have the proper ingredients to prepare our order. We shifted gears and ordered a Greek salad and sandwich. 30 minutes later we were served 2 salads neither of which were what we had ordered - no sandwich. We had a somewhat outside, patio table, however the volume from the inside televisions was at such a loud decibel that we couldn't even communicate with our waitress let alone each other (perhaps contributed to the breakdown in service). We suggested turning down the volume and our waitress informed us that this is a "sports bar" and therefore not an option. Yum yum yum! Best pizza ever! They use unbromaded flour and with with the iodine crises we life in today it's one of the few places to get tasty food! Companies replaced iodine with bromide and this is one of the few businesses that knows it! Thank you! If you are confused about my review read the book The Iodine Crisis! Been here a few times. The pizza is meh. Nothing great. BUT the appetizers are wonderful! The STUFFED PORTOBELLO mushroom is OUTSTANDING! Spinach Artichoke Dip is certainty one of the best I've had for sure. The service is sometimes a little slow....when they are slow, which is odd. But they are all super friendly and funny! We have about one of everyone: someone who is lactose intolerant, a vegetarian (me), gluten free, and I'm sure those I'm not thinking of. The wide array in the menu was able to accommodate all of us. The server split up the bill easily & without hassle. The server was very nice. However, service of the food was slow. Some of the food was cold when it got to the table. I attempted to order a beer 4 different times, all of which they were sold out of. It's pretty hard to say you have a great selection of beer when you are all sold out. We decided to go into Mellow Mushroom after walking around downtown McKinney. We had not been into the restaurant before but had heard good things from others about it. As a group of seven with 4 kids. The staff took good care of us and it was neat to watch them make the pizza from where we were sitting in the resturant. We started with a few appetizers. Magic Mushroom Soup: . It tasted great and had a good chunk of mushrooms in it. My sister got this as her appetizer but she shared it with us as it really was a good portion of soup for the price. Stuffed Portobello: My mother and I shared this dish. The Portobello was large and was cooked appropriately. Once it was all said and done, we ended up eating it more as a salad as we cut it up and ate it with the artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, and lettuce. All of the ingredients tasted fresh and went together well. We also had the Bruschetta but I cannot comment on it as I did not get to try it. My mother and sister both enjoyed it. My wife, mother and I shared the Might Meat pizza. The crust was made to perfection and tasted great. Each slice of Pizza had a good portion of each of the meats which included, smoked applewood bacon, pepperoni, sausage, and ham. The price for the Pizza seemed a little high but given the ingredients and flavor it was worth the price. The medium which we purchased produces 6 large pieces of Pizza and cost close to $ 20 dollars. My kids that were with me also got pizza. They both had the French Bread pizza which can be ordered with or without pepperoni's. It also comes with a side dish of broccoli or apples. Both kids selected the pepporoni pizza with apple slices and ate a large portion of their meal. The apples slices were a small portion but the pizza more than made up for it. The last dish that was bought was the Half Meatball Hoagie. The bread on the hoagie was delicious and the sandwhich was filled with sauce and meatballs. The food here is soooo good! I've never been disappointed. The service is also good. Funky piercings, tats and hair colors are to be expected, but the wait staff is professional and courteous, prompt with refills and helpful with menu suggestions. My only problem is the noise level. I've been to rock concerts quieter than this. The ambient music is dangerously loud, so don't go if you're expecting a quiet, intimate dinner. Add to that the patrons having to shout their conversations across the table, and my ears were literally ringing when I left. I truly think OSHA needs to get involved as noise is just as much a workplace hazard as anything else. Granted, this was Friday evening and they were super busy, but I've been there on a week day and the week end after the lunch rush, and it was just as loud. When picking up our order, of course it was wrong. We got bruchetta and spinach dip with our pizzas. They left our apps in the boxes to turn to goo while they remade our pizzas, which took 35 minutes instead of the "12 to 15 minutes" that they promised. so we went for our lunch hour and made sure to let the waitress know we were on our lunch break... she asked if we would like anything to drink and we said water please.....30 minutes later we still had not been served our water or asked if we were ready to order.
