Where to eat after a Drs. appointment at 3:30 in the afternoon? First we tried Thai Star, which wasn't open. Then KJ's in Ft Myers. They only serve the dinner menu after 3:00 pm. No chance of getting a hamburger there. So we finally decided to go to Mel's Diner! Here we can get whatever we want and a home cooked meal. Jason was our very knowledgeable and professional server. He suggested the chef's special-shrimp scallops and red snapper and a side of vegetable rice. At first I was hesitant because I expected something like you see in a Chinese Buffet. But this was actually very tasty and covered with a light sauce. It also came with soup or salad. Dave got the salad and I got the chicken noodle soup. I wanted matzoh ball soup but there was a $3 up charge for a cup. The soup should have been called chicken veggie with two noodles. Very disappointing. We opted to share an order of rice pudding and it was served in an ice cream sundae glass with whipped cream. Delish! I do recommend it here for a quick bite or breakfast as well it's great price. The mozzarella sticks I had were the best in town very fresh and cheesy. Today, a friend of mine, her three granddaughters along with her teenage granddaughter's friend joined me for lunch here. Teenagers were one thing they didn't find anything that they could possibly eat with 144 menu selections to choose from they insisted there was nothing that they wanted to eat so my friend and our two grandchildren and I got food. I forgot to take pictures but I got picture of mine my friend ordered the chicken and biscuits and the little three year-old had the kids cheeseburger and fries and the eight-year-old had a slice of ham and mashed potatoes cause she had trouble with her tooth.. I myself had the classic cheeseburger minus the cheese with a side of fries. Everything was excellent. I still can't understand how teenagers could not find anything to eat when they had so much to choose from but anyways, we enjoyed our lunch there we enjoyed a fellowship here we enjoyed our server and the whole atmosphere was wonderful. Over the span of a week, I went to Mel's Diner more than a few times. I knew what to expect and was happy every time I went there. I went to a meeting and this was one of the restaurants that the group went to after their regular meetings. Parking was good and the area around the restaurant was clean. When I entered I was welcomed within moments and shown a seat very quickly thereafter. The staff were friendly and gave me the choice for where I wanted to sit. I did not wait long before having a drink in front of me and having my order put in. The food was great, the price was reasonable and my drink never went empty. I also had enough to take home for a snack later. I got to know the manager and some of the wait staff and found them ALL to be terrific! This place reminds me of a Jersey Diner from up north except there being a lot more older people that all seemed to know each other. The waitress was so helpful and kind. She was quick to get me my food and coffee. She was also quick to bring me the ketchup and bill when I asked for it. The place has very comfortable booths to sit in. I really liked how the coffee was unlimited. I ended up getting the BIG 9 SPECIAL which was 3 pancakes, 3 eggs, and 3 bacon for 10.99. Comfort Food For Lunch Mel's Diner is a go to that never disappoints. We stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday and as luck would have it, Stuffed Cabbage Rolls were the $10.99 Lunch Special. I am of European descent and ate cabbage rolls as a kid so I had to get them. The lunch special includes soup or salad, the cabbage rolls and mashed potatoes. The salad came to the table first and was cold and crisp with mixed greens and cherry tomatoes. Then came the prize - 2 nice size cabbage rolls with a light tomatoish sauce. The cabbage leaves surrounding the meat center were cooked just right, a little firm requiring a knife to cut them. The ground beef and rice roll was firm and well flavored. The buttery mashed potatoes were homemade as there were some potato chunks within. I brought home one cabbage roll and some mashed potato to have for lunch the next day. A great meal. Mel's is very much a time capsule diner. I originally thought Mel's only existed in California (a very Californian thought to have) and was pleasantly surprised to see it here. The decor was very 50s-60s-esque which I thought preserved the diner-feel. We were a party of nine people, so I was very surprised to see how quickly we were accommodated for -- we were sat a table they put together in about 5 minutes despite it being fairly busy. The server was attentive and kind throughout our meal. It is unfortunate that there are no halal meat options, however we simply ordered entrees without meat. The menu was honestly pretty expansive otherwise. Our table ordered a range of omelettes to tacos to sandwiches which we found so-so overall. Nothing to complain about for sure! As for drinks, many of us ordered cappuccinos and the visual presentation led us to believe it wouldn't be that good. But again, we were surprised that it wasn't actually bad at all. I ordered mine with vanilla sweetener added, but even then, it wasn't very sweet so that's important to note depending on your preferences! Mel's Diner 6-21-24 We have eaten at Mel's a couple times. Today we stopped for breakfast. We walked in about 8:30 on a Friday morning. They were not full at all. The waitress whose name was Coco came over and seated us quickly. She brought our coffee out fast and took our order. I order the Smoked Kielbasa Scramble And the wife order the Belgian Waffle with fresh Strawberries on top. Our orders came out quickly and were hot and looked great. My Scramble had 3 eggs, cheese, and meat. I also had potatoes and Rye bread with it. It all was good, hot, fresh and a plate full. My wife's Belgian looked even better. It was hot and the fresh Strawberries made the difference. It was all good. This place was clean and very organized with a 50's vibe to it which we loved. Coco came by several times to check on us to make sure all was ok. This place not only has a good breakfast, but I know for a fact they have great dinners. I have been there for the Turkey platter which was very good at dinner time. Everyone should try this diner. All the food and reports I have had so far has been good. My only complaint about the restaurant was how disgusting the bathroom was when I had to take my son in there. When I needed to change my daughter's diaper, I opted to go to the car instead since it was so gross in there. Our server was a little goofy but friendly none the less. This is a typical retro diner so you can't expect much, especially from a small town. It was convenient and right across the street from our hotel and wasn't half bad considering my hangover as well. So after raving to my wife about Mel's, we went on a Saturday nite date. Something was immediately off, the food took 45 minutes to arrive. Th salad was wilted warm and stale. The fish special with crabmeat and a Mel's key lime sauce was separated and gelatinous. The food was warm and lacked any flavor. My bbq 2/2 included ribs which were like warm, but the chicken tenders were amazing. The sides, fried okra and sweet mashed potatoes were also very good. I went to Mel's Diner with family for breakfast on the weekend and we all were very satisfied with our meals and the service. I really liked the very cool decor inside and out. The restaurant had an old style feeling with the variety of antique decor they had up around the restaurant. We all agreed that all of our food was delicious. Well the hurricane sure messed up the parking situation. Right now there are like maybe 20 parking spots and that's it. Otherwise you have to go behind behind the Rooms-to-Go where you are allowed to park and then walk over to the restaurant. Service is rather slow. They have a wide selection of meals and lunch specials and daily specials. You go to Mel's for "comfort food." Nothing fancy but their comfort foods are consistently good. Can't say the food was anything special here. We stopped in for Sunday Breakfast because our hotel was right across the street. I don't eat meat, dairy or eggs so it was quite a challenge to find something on the menu. I ended up with the Smoked Salmon (Lox) Bagel but omitted the cream cheese and eggs. Since they were charging me for it anyways, my husband asked for the eggs (which they didn't bring out so he had to ask). He ordered the full stack of French toast, which did not look appetizing in the least and came out soggy and plain, no sides or anything, just a bunch of bread. Luckily he had my eggs. For the kiddo, I was happy to see there was a healthy, plant based option so we ordered the Multigrain PB & Banana. It came out as half of a sandwich with fruit for $5.99. My mom ordered the Country Benedict, which was probably the only thing on the table that seemed worth it for the price. I was flabbergasted when we got the bill and it was $9.57 for 3 cups of coffee, without milk because they don't have non-dairy options. I know this is a diner but it would be cool to roll with the times. I wouldn't recommend and I wouldn't come back next time we are in town. The service was slow and inattentive (but friendly nonetheless).
