I got the chicken & dressing and honey gold wings. Chicken and dressing: chicken was super dry, definitely need cranberry sauce or gravy to enjoy this meal. The cornbread dressing is the most nicely seasoned I've ever had. Not dry either. I wanted Mac and cheese but they were sold out at 1pm which I though was a little off for a soul place, there should be enough Mac and cheese for the whole day. They were also out of mashed potatoes. So instead, I got mixed greens and corn. Mixed greens were tender and seasoned. Corn was just corn. Honey gold wings: they are HUGE!!! I didn't realize I was getting full size wings when I ordered. I love their honey gold sauce. They give you extra too so you can really dip your chicken in it after you eat the skin. It wasn't the crispiest chicken but I enjoyed it nonetheless. May come back another day, maybe earlier so I can actually get some sides.

Wow! I am so glad that I came here for dinner. It came highly recommended by the front desk of my hotel as well as many Yelp reviews. Everything was absolutely delicious and everyone was so friendly. I enjoy the blackened salom with some sides. There are so many other options, I definitely will be back to try more. Be sure to get a piece of sweet potato pie cornbread!

This chicken spot was pretty good. It was right next to the civil rights museum. The restaurant was clean but the wait for food was super long and we were the only people in the restaurant. The food came out extremely fresh and hot. I ordered two thighs, greens, yams, and Mac and cheese. We also got banana pudding to split. I felt that the food was kind of expensive and that it could have been a little cheaper. Overall it was pretty good. The best part was the hot sauce by far. It was the best hot sauce I have ever had and I wish I knew where they got it from. It was a good fried chicken spot and I would recommend.

I miss it being 99cent Soul Food. Where I could go and get a veggie platter for $5-6! I saw all sides were now $3-5 each, so I opted in to get the Blackened Salmon for $14.99(NO SIDES INCLUDED) only a strip of salmon. Of course I added 2 sides to make a complete meal which my total came out to be $22.50(drink not included). They even charged for hot sauce lol. Yes, I enjoyed the meal, but no I doubt I'll make it my first choice when getting soul food in Memphis. Thanks for the plate though!

Loved this place. The food is amazing!!! We came in with a big group and they made sure we were taken care of and were organized. The guy pictured on the pic was so sweet and made sure if there were any problems, he fixed it. He went above and beyond to take care of us. I definitely recommend this place and will be returning because they ran out off dressing and I got to try it. Lol

Stumbled upon this place after visiting Lorraine hotel. So glad we did! The guys were very friendly, greeting us as soon as we walked in. I ordered the smothered chicken breast. It came out hot and fresh. The chicken breast was so large, it was big enough for 2 people to share. I ordered the greens and yams. Everything was flavored so well, it didn't lack anything. I rarely write reviews, but I was so impressed by the toast of this food- I had to share! It's a must try while in Memphis!

In Memphis visiting and we stopped at Memphis Soul. We met the owner, who is the kindest, nicest guy! He really helped us with the menu and tailored a dish to my liking. The food was good!!! The restaurant was neat, clean, has a really cute decor, and the staff was friendly. I gave the restaurant only 4 stars because after placing, paying, and waiting about 15 minutes for my order I was informed that they out of yams. I had already paid for my order, waited on it, but still did not get what I ordered. When I asked how much longer would I have to wait for yams I was told that I'd have to wait another 35 minutes for yams. Communication is key guys!!! I probably would have ordered something else had I known that they were out of yams.

AMAZING food, awesome staff. I had the smothered chicken, greens,, and fried okra. The chicken shredded with just a fork and the greens had zero bitterness. The okra was buttery delicious. My wife had the pork chops and the best fried green tomatoes We've had. AMAZING!!!!!

So far 99 cent soul food express has been my favorite experience in Memphis. Be prepared to wait as they do take their time with food preparation but for some reason when you see the food you instantly don't mind waiting. Also make sure to grab you one of those Obama drinks...we call them half and half back east but I'm cool with calling them Obama lol. I actually came back just to grab one after touring the museum. Tried the catfish, wings, and souther dressing (my favorite of them all) and everything was perfect. If you have time call your order in...if not grab a seat and wait but don't feel too bad because the food is fresh and worth the wait. If and when I return, I have to try the ox tails...ps the guy at the counter keeps me rolling with laughter...great personality for the front for sure.

Happened upon this gem after touring the NCRM (it's almost next door). Friendly, fast, and delicious food (I had the smothered pork chop with greens and butter beans). Family friendly. Oh, my wife ordered the peach cobbler for dessert, and had to hold me off with her free hand - it was that good. read more

I work in the medical district and it's hard to find homemade and GOOD soul food! I found this place via Google and checked it out and it was superb!! A little misleading with the 99 cents sign flashing everywhere, but the food was great! Certain meats are a little over priced but it's worth it ! read more

My family and I walked in to this place after a long morning at the National Civil Rights Museum. Staring at the menu like a deer in a headlight, it was evident we had no clue. The gentleman behind the counter, Nash graciously gave us a quick run down of the choices and how to order our meals. I don't know much about authentic soul food, but I can say that everything was delicious. Very friendly atmosphere. Would definitely go back if I'm ever back in Memphis. read more

We were waiting in the rain for a trolley and turned around and went in for lunch. What a delightful, unexpected surprise! My husband grew up in the South and enjoyed a smothered pork chop with black eyed peas. I highly recommend this casual restaurant with very good food. read more

Owner was welcoming and fun. The times on the door said 11-3, walked in at 5 to 3 and he did stay and enjoy our doors are always open. We had an amazing meal for under $7.00. This place is in an ideal location which is in front of the MLK Memorial and civil rights museum in Memphis,Tn. My family and I thought the name was nice and thought we'd check it out; Bad mistake! All the food products were too salty and too sweet! The veggie sides were ninety nine cent;but failed to tell you that's half a serving! Drink refills are priced at $.99! Had a take out for salmon.When we got back home the fish smelled which indicated that it was old;couldn't eat ! All in all we spent over 70.00 for food that wasn't worth half that amount! Too many Great soul food restaurants in Memphis-will not return! read more

Small restaurant with fast and cheap soul food. I ordered the catfish, mac and cheese and greens. The catfish was made to order and was delicious. Mac and Cheese was good too. I am trying to figure out what was in it because it had a different taste (like a kick) to it (in a good way). The greens were ok, I ended up with a lot of the middle stock pieces and less of the leaves. Service was friendly and fast. read more

Don't be fouled by the 99 Cent name, this isn't low quality fast food. They have some delicious 99cent sides, but this is a place that does Soul Food right. From Sweet Potato Cornbread to smothered pork chops, it's all good. They also have a handful of vegetarian/vegan menu options that are incredible. read more

The owner and staff is very sweet and accommodating. We walked in at 1:55 today not realizing they closed at 2. Not only did they serve us hot food but they allowed us to eat in. Nice to visit a black owned business in Memphis. Food and prices was great too! read more

Great soul food. The fried chicken wings were crispy outside and juicy inside, and my butter beans/yellow squash/mixed greens sides were all cooked perfectly. I bought a beautiful slice of caramel cake that I was too full to taste. It was a nice treat later in the day. Perfect stop for lunch after the National Civil Rights Museum. read more

I'm very disappointed in this place. I spent over 60 dollars on Uber eats with this place. The cabbage has a weird smell and the meatloaf doesn't taste like meat. To top it off I was missing my beverages. I will never spend money with this place again. read more

I'm no sure what these other customers are talking about but this place is disgusting. You guys surely don't know how proper soul food should taste. I ordered through one of the delivery apps and I was so excited to try this place. My food was not very tasty AT ALL. My dressing tasted like old bread had been used, my macaroni was bland and my fried meat was not crispy, but rather moist. I would not suggest this place for good soul food. NEVER. read more

My review is based solely on my actual experience at 99 cent Soul Food Express on this day. In a word, outstanding! The smothered pork chop with phenomenal, the cabbage and greens made me feel like I was eating home cooking from my mom, and the Black Eyed Peas were out of this world. Everything is a la carte, some dishes are already pre-made, others are available made to order. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is extremely inviting. Could this be the Meat-and-two or three place that you've been looking for in Downtown Memphis? We will definitely be back. read more

I really wanted to give 5 stars because it has tons of 5 star qualities. Service is 5 stars. The venue is 5 stars. Friendliness is 5 stars. Meatloaf is 5 stars. Greens are 5 stars. Mac n cheese is 4.5 stars. Prices are 5 stars. Dressing is 5 stars. I tasted the black eyed peas which were good but I personally don't like black eyed peas. Candied yams are the same. The cake is good but seemed expensive. $2.99 for a small piece. They were out of some items I wanted like okra and cornbread. The buttered rolls were not good to me. The meatloaf was truly great. My wife enjoyed the oxtails, cabbage and black eye peas. We did not know how close this place is to the National Civil Rights museum. It is only a few doors down from the 2nd building of exhibits. We would definitely recommend if you are visiting the museum. read more

As I got off work I was craving soul food. Something I could just go pick up and I thought about this place. I have had the food before but I have never been to the restaurant personally. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by very friendly staff. There are a lot of varies to choose from. From beef, pork and veggies. I had the dressing, yams and black eye peas. Delicious! Modest spot just down the street from the 2nd part of the Civil Rights Museum. I got all veggies - cabbage, butterbeans, green beans and fried okra. All were good, though the green beans were ho hum. Exceptional service and good fresh food!!! They were really vocal on how appreciative they were to have our service. They make you feel like honored guests. I really liked the atmosphere and the location of the restaurant. I had the fried chicken, yams, Mac n cheese and cabbage. The only thing I didn't absolutely love was the cabbage. Oh and GET THE SWEER POTATO CORNBREAD!!! Delicious!!! My peach cobbler is on the way to the table I can't wait!!! Stay away from those rude Cheesecake people from around the corner. They will never get another cent from me. The worst service I've ever had anywhere ever!!! read more

We spent 4 days in Memphis and we're lucky to bump into this place just before leaving town. Across from the blues museum and a pop over from the National Civil Rights Museum, this unpretentious, family-run eatery offers as good catfish as we've had. Lots of entree and veggie choices. Fried okra and fried green tomatoes were deep fried but not too thickly coated. Banana pudding was fine but not a standout. Wonderful folks! Go! read more

Well the express part of 99 cent soul food express is far its title. Nothing exciting about the food. Paying is weird they have to come from around the counter to take you're money? Highly recommend. Tried this place during Trolley night and was impressed. We had the Catfish platter and fried chicken with fried okra, green beans, mashed potatoes and cornbread. It was all very good and the cornbread was incredible. Prices were reasonable. Services was top notch. This place takes care of their customers. Give it a try. read more

Really good, cheap food! The mac and cheese was delicious. Idk if they added gravy or something to the cheese sauce, but it was extra savory. You get two cornbread muffins for 99 cents and they're really good sized, yummy cornbread muffins. Who doesn't like cornbread muffins?? The fried chicken was nice and crispy and the stuffing and fried okra was decent. The owners were so welcoming and sweet. I'd definitely go back. read more

The food was terrible and they left several items off of our order, claiming the items were not available even though they were on the menu they posted on Yelp. The dressing was stove top stuffing, NOT what you'd expect at any soul food restaurant. The oxtails were all fat, the butter beans were salty, the squash was mushy with NO flavor, the greens tasted like glory greens out of the can, the fried green tomatoes were nasty, and the corn bread muffins were cold and hard. Everything tasted pre-packaged. This is the worst so-called soul food in Memphis. I DO NOT recommend!! read more

We--wife/husband and grown son--first learned, from a Drury Inn hotel manager in Paducah, KY--that we should certainly visit The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis (he was right--it's amazing if heart-wrenching). Then we left the museum, quite hungry. Then we stumbled onto the 99 Cent Soul Food Express. The food--especially the smothered chicken, though I liked the Obama-tea, too--was delicious and reasonably priced. I wish we hadn't gotten so much chicken and vegetables (all great), only because we didn't have room for the peach cobbler, which looked grand. As my wife said, if we lived in Memphis, we'd eat there every week. (I have no idea why Yelp is showing me as being from San Francisco--I've visited there but never lived in California in my life.) read more

I also thought the charcuterie appetizer had a weird mix of items on it from club crackers, to meat and cheese, and random veggies. Not bad but just kind of a weird mix. My husband ordered the salmon and he said it was good, not the best he's had but it was good. Other friends of ours got the white fish among the many other dishes. I did have a salad with these apples on it which was incredibly yummy. I will say though my dish looked amazing some of the other dishes were not plated well. Not to nitpick but to want to be considered a more upscale restaurant which means charging guest more money than say a local Applebee's then knowing how to appropriately garnish or drizzle sauce to elevate at plate is important (see my picture of the chicken dish). All and all not my favorite restaurant but definitely not the worst!!

I love the ambiance and the vibe of the place; it's pretty neat how it used to be a theatre, and they have kept presence of that history in the place. Beyond that, there's very little that pushes me to really want to go to this place, while at the same time acknowledging that I don't find myself being negative if a friend or someone else picks here. The food is decent, the service is really hit or miss, and I've always found them to be quite slow ... so it just hits average for me. Not something I'm picking but not something I'm dreading if it is picked.

As soon as we sat down at the bar, the bartender--a Caucasian woman with a short haircut whose name I unfortunately didn't get--greeted us with an attitude that immediately made us feel unwelcome. Instead of providing friendly service, she was dismissive, impatient, and rushed us through placing our to-go order. She informed us that we could not eat at the bar, which was completely fine. We agreed without any issue and ordered our food to go. However, when my food arrived, I simply opened the container to make sure my order was correct before leaving. She immediately rushed back over and aggressively said, "Didn't I tell you that you could not eat at the bar?" I hadn't taken a single bite--I was only checking my order. Rather than politely clarifying the policy, she continued to scold us and make us feel like we were inconveniencing her simply by being there. We still hadn't even received my friend's food, yet she seemed more interested in lecturing us than providing basic customer service. Once my friend's food finally arrived, we left as quickly as possible. As visitors in town celebrating Pride, we expected a welcoming atmosphere and basic courtesy. Instead, we experienced hostility, impatience, and a complete lack of professionalism. There's a huge difference between enforcing a policy and treating customers with disrespect, and this bartender clearly doesn't understand that distinction. The food may have been fine, but the service was so unpleasant that I would never return or recommend Bar Dogs to anyone looking for a friendly place to eat or have a drink. Customer service training is desperately needed.

I looked over the basic menu and saw burgers, breakfast, salads, sandwiches, a famous pork chop, wings and a few other items. The client and my colleague quickly ordered devilled eggs, cheese curds, and chili cheese fries. The first two apps were really good, I didn't try the fries though. They had a burger of the day, and a food special of the day, but I settled on the wings. With those I chose the 10 pc, Buffalo with dry rub, smoked. Kind of a weird combination since most people usually order dry here apparently, but I like saucy wings. When they come out, they are huge and I knew I wouldn't be able to finish them. I think I could only eat 6-7. My colleague had a ribeye steak salad which was a protein bomb he loved, and my 2 clients ordered a big rig grilled cheese which he also loved and a fried chicken sandwich (firebird) which looked really good. Overall, I really liked this place and it's one of the best meals I've had in Memphis the handful of times I've visited.

At this point, I would recommend sticking to the fries and the burgers, which remain the strongest items on the menu.

The ordering process is simple: walk up to the counter, place your order, grab a number, and seat yourself. I appreciated that they offer both breakfast and lunch all day because it meant we didn't have to choose between the two. I ordered the chicken tenders with tater tots and an Arnold Palmer. Everything was fresh, hot, and exactly the kind of comfort food you crave in the middle of a long road trip. Kyler ordered the Kitchen Sink, which came with eggs, bacon, hash browns, grits, and a biscuit. He asked if he could swap the cheesy grits and biscuit for biscuits and gravy, and they ended up bringing him everything anyway! It was a massive meal, but absolutely delicious. Beyond the food, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I also loved the fun, eclectic atmosphere. The colorful Memphis touches throughout the restaurant gave it so much personality, and there was even a bar area that made me think this would be an absolute blast for brunch with friends. It will be hard to find another wedge salad that measures up. The sweet potato pecan casserole was good but it felt like it was missing something that we couldn't quite put our finger on what. The maple bacon Brussels sprouts were a table favorite...perfectly cooked and well-seasoned. My dad and sister both enjoyed the braised beef, which was served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. To finish, we shared the white chocolate bread pudding and it was absolutely delicious. In fact, the table next to us seemed to enjoy theirs just as much. Overall, this was a wonderful dining experience with great service, a memorable atmosphere, excellent cocktails and standout dishes. I'd happily return the next time I'm headed downtown.

I used to bring everyone I knew to this restaurant, groups and all. The owner was nice once upon a time until he started trying to get with my boyfriend. I have no problem with the LGBTQ community, but why is the owner constantly coming after my boyfriend? The service is horrible now. EVERY TIME I enter this restaurant I get talked to as if I am not about to spend my money at their establishment. The lady at the register always looks at me with disgust. Once they found out I was the girlfriend they treated me poorly. They overcharge for VERY SMALL amounts. I can cook this food myself, but I was supporting black businesses. NOT ANYMORE! Stop trying to beat people out of their money(employees and customers) when this is the type of establishment you run. BE DECENT HUMANS! read more

Place is clear, simple. food is ok, nothing I will be craving anytime soon, the people behind the counter need major customer service training....they were not rude or anything but there was NO enthusiasm in their communication with us, it was like...oh blah...you want this...ok...kinda like talking to Eyor from Winny the Pooh...so...if I get near starving and happened to be in the area...I will pick this place over Onix next door...but I will certainly not go out of my way to try it like I did today.
