We are visiting from Seattle and wanted to explore the local coffee on the big island. Menehune Coffee, recommended by locals, did not disappoint. In addition to the location at the heart of old Kona, they have a cafe at their farm on the way to the Volcano. Alondra and Misty provided us with the perfect cup of happiness, along with a deliciously made cappuccino for a great 7am experience. Many coffee places, even the famous brands I won't mention by name, are not consistent making a good cappuccino. They usually add way too much milk turning it into a latte. However, Misty was assured me it would be delicious and she was right. We also ordered breakfast. My wife order the veggie omelet and I decided to get their two eggs on a hamburger on top of fried rice with gravy. Probably not the most healthy thing to order, but I'm on vacation and it was delicious. My wife loved her omelet- fresh farm to table goodness and suggested we return here on a trip to Green Sands beach. Highly recommended for coffee, food and service with a smile. Had breakfast this morning at Menehune Coffee with my wife. I had the country breakfast and she had the veggie omelette. She ordered up tea and I had a mocha. A lilikoi cheesecake to go. It's excellent! The breakfast was excellent and the mocha superb. Best coffee mocha I've experienced on the big island. Coffee is premium! The house fries/potatoes have a great flavor. As we experienced in past visits, the service and chef were exceptional. The chef made a point of thanking us for visiting and remembered both my wife and I from our November visit. The server was attentive and friendly. Another beautiful Aloha experience. We are excited about trying out the lunch menu. We spent 3 days in the Captain Cook area and this was the best breakfast and coffee we had during our stay. The scones are delicious, and the house fries and bacon were cooked perfectly. What was once a place of convenience for a morning cup of coffee has turned into a place of disgust - There's been multiple occasions where I've passed by because there was an employee smoking directly in front of the building with smoke blowing into the open windows... Today took the icing on the cake though... I walked in to get my morning coffee, the server with the short hair and purple bandanna was at the register with the cook trying to get the register to work - the server had an unlit cigarette in her mouth as I was trying to place my order. Super disappointed in the professionalism of the establishment & that management is going to stand by while their employees stand around with cigs in their mouth while inside the store... Hawaii state law prohibits smoking of tobacco products at restaurants or in partially enclosed areas (within 20 feet of any public building) - This business has officially lost a regular customer - don't stop here if you're looking for a professional clean environment to stop for coffee or food, they're likely to drop tobacco in your stuff.. read more

Turkey sandwich on spinach tortilla with garlic ailoi and spinach was pretty yummy as was the vinegar based slaw. It was unfortunate there was only one server. This is.. an experience to say the least. Some pros... My grandpa loved the "Rueben Sandwich" and their tomatoes were good... but where they excelled in some places, they lacked in others. DISGUSTING! Three burgers had to be sent back for being very pink and raw in the middle. (Two of which weren't ours, they were the neighboring tables.) Someone in the back must've been a bit eager to get the food out, because that is something that I've rarely seen at such a "high rated" place like this one. After telling the waitress, we got it back, and the pink on the outer edges was gone.. then my brother decided to get curious and open it up. FOOL US ONCE, SHAME ON YOU. Fool us twice, shame on you again, twice. And, if that wasn't enough burger trauma, there was something that we didn't order on the lettuce. It was similar to the things we call "burrs" the ones that get stuck to your cotton clothing. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Then, with the "Island Princess" salad, also to be known with us as the disgusting salad they forgot the dressing and avocado... May I ask, what level of stupidity you have to be on to forget dressing, and salad staple, on the salad?? This has confused me! Their 8 ball table is a terrible distraction being so close to the dining tables. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU DONT PLAN TO STAY FOR A WHILE. read more

I love the tales of the Menehunes. One of the first magical stories passed down to me during a fresh eyed visit to the islands. I really thought it was cute....now I am wondering....is it backhanded to depict them the way they do in some images? Like the Braves or Redskins mascot? Is it piercing a heart and making something not what it is? .... Anywho. This place has pretty unhealthy food options. They served burnt sausage on my sandwich and the side of papaya was anorexic. A nice surprise though to the salty mess of a sandwich I had. The Big island latte was delicious. :) The service is the main reason I give it a one star. Even though people were parked at the best tables with just coffees (I was told since 7am) they still chose to hover over me while I was on the phone on an important call!!! They didn't walk away (I've waited on my fair share of tables to know good service) they kept interrupting me to either ask me for more money since I asked for greens and tomato for the gray sandwich - or to clear my table. All this interruption while I just got there and not once did I see them bother the parked coffee drinking wfii'ing since 7am people. This is much more than your average coffee shop, there is ample seating to enjoy fresh made food, wonderful coffee, great people working there, and even a pool table! Very tasty!!, the rice pudding recipe is probably at least 120 years old, the coffee and espresso is from farm they grow & process!
