Fabulosity. Really amazing historical hotel right next to the Alamo. It is absolutely beautiful, has a rich history of guests, and a reputation for being haunted. I came here with my girlfriends to have a fancy brunch at the famous Menger buffet. The variety of things to choose from was mind-boggling. There was a waffle iron, fruit, mimosas, even pate. The Menger is a beautiful hotel. Said to be hunted but we didn't run into anything unusual. The grounds are beautiful all decorated in Victorian furniture. The Menger Bar is another fav of mine. The dark wood which has a manly cave like feeling that is dimly lit with MASSIVE taxidermy really feels like more of a "man" establishment but it is not. The hotel has great prices so it's not overpriced and though it is not a small boutique hotel it certainly is not the average big corporate chain which I love!! read more

This hotel is vintage. I love the architecture and overall theme of this hotel. The hotel is conveniently located near shops, restaurants, bars, and of course the Alamo. When you leave the hotel there is a row of horse and carriages you if you want to go on a ride. The pool area is large equipped with a hot-tub. There is a nice sitting area overlooking a fountain and a nice green area. Overall they have a good quality in customer service. The Valet does take a while so call ahead. read more

I love historic places, and especially historic hotels. Unfortunately, the Victorian lobby and half of the historic portion of the Menger were closed for repairs/renovations when I was there on 20 August. I was still able to stay in the open section of the historic wing, though. The room...was adequate. I considered asking to be moved because of a bit of a moldy smell, but I only really noticed it the first minute or so after each time I returned to the room, and I was only going to be there two nights. Bed was a single, which is somewhat unusual for a hotel, but whatever, I'm just one guy travelling on my own anyway. I saw in another review that someone mentioned the lack of towel bars or hooks in the bathroom - I was also frustrated by this. Once you use a towel, what are you supposed to do with it? I'm neat by nature, and refuse to just leave things lying about. I wasn't on my computer much, but I did notice the same intermittence that another Yelper wrote about. Restaurant was lackluster. I ate dinner there on the first night, and it was completely empty. It was probably after 9pm, but still, kinda creepy. I was tired from the road, though, and needed food without going out. Ordered a steak, and again - just adequate. Problem here was that while the steak was no better or worse than something I would grill myself (both in the quality of the cut and the preparation) they want 27 bucks for it. Come on. Let's not kid ourselves. Despite the fact that the mixed veggies on the side were pretty good, it was a 17-18 dollar meal at most. Thankfully upon check-in, they gave me a 20% off coupon for the restaurant, so I wasn't too miffed. Breakfast on my second day there was better, though still overpriced. The one thing you can't indict about the Menger is the location. It's literally right next to the Alamo, and a street away from the Riverwalk. I'm going to give this hotel three (plus) stars.. It is truly a beautiful historic hotel and in the best location... across the path from the Alamo, next to the Riverwalk mall and around the corner from the Riverwalk. Seriously in the best location! The room was nice, but the keys virtually never worked right in the electronic door lock (we had to get updated keys each time). The breakfast buffet was good (we didn't try anything else). However, the walls are paper thin and every time the room next to us flushed their toilet, turned on their television or had a conversation, we were right in the middle of it albeit from the next room. That only works if the next room isn't up past midnight and not raring to go at 7am the following morning. Sadly, that wasn't the case for us. The other complaint I have is that at a truly nice hotel will not require you to "request" room service ahead of time which we were not made aware of so our room was never made up which I'm fine with but we had to hunt down the chambermaids for fresh towels whenever we needed them. In closing I'll say I did enjoy the hotel's history and beauty, but we go back in two days before our flight home, and I've booked another hotel. read more

No matter how many times I travel to San Antonio there are endless possibilities and discoveries. Thinking the riverwalk hotels were always a must, decided to throw out those tried and tired and stayed in a haunted property. Don't get me wrong ...this is not Hotel Del --stayed on the unhaunted side (actually the side with AC). With a drought boiling and rolling you really want AC, the rest of the property seemed to have none. On the haunted side, this of course is the oldest side it is not only hot, but appears probably not able to pass code, could care less that Presidents of the United States bunk here, the property could use some 21st century touches...love the history and the location is amazing as it is within walking to everything with most folks around you being vertically sober and there is ice cream within 5 feet of the hotel and 5 more feet you are at the Alamo...no need to bring your Jimmy Choos, this is flip flop territory even at the 5 star restaurants, and that is with plenty of AC. Food not so good...we had breakfast and chose not to eat any further meals there. The trolley is 5 seconds away, believe the cost was $1.20 each way to wherever you chose to go, granted that you are not color blind. Shopping is another 5 seconds away and that is primarily where you want to hang during the day. Valet is expensive and our poor car melted in an uncovered lot, but with security and that is critical in this area of San Antonio, valet staff were super. The rooms were nice, fairly clean, not overly spacious, front desk staff assured us that we would actually be able to sleep in the rooms without the typical party crowds that overflow on the riverwalk. Being overly picky I would stay here again, little boutiques are nice and some front desk folks were new in town and not sure which restaurants to book for us or how to get there, with a smart phone in hand it was no problem, but Stash hotels usually have a handle on those issues and that is the only disappointment we encountered, thankfully no ghosts did we bump into! read more

If you're looking for a hotel in a great location that's also affordable, but is used only as a place to sleep at night, the Menger Hotel is exactly what you're looking for. Right next to the Alamo and the Riverwalk, it was extremely convenient. The staff was friendly and the rooms were clean. However, they are fairly small, and don't have all the amenities you might find in a chain hotel. We really enjoyed the quaintness and charm though, and didn't mind the fact that we didn't have additional amenities, such as wifi. We found that there are a lot of extra fees added on to the bill, such as parking and taxes. However, we still got a better deal here than we would have at any of the other hotels in the area. read more

Considering the hotel is over century old, it's in a pretty good condition. So if you want to stay at a historical hotel, I highly recommend this. However, if you just need to stay at a hotel, Hyatt is a block away and is much better. The room I stayed in had one King bed and was very small. Even though it's not the best, I still like the Menger. To be fair, the fancy Victorian Lobby was being remodeled. So we didn't have that charming experience. And our room itself was fairly large... but we got 2 double beds instead of 1 queen or king. And our room was clean, the beds were comfortable, the service was friendly. But.... in addition to the double beds... the bathroom was so odd! No towel bars. None. I mean nada. Zero. Zilch. Not one. There was a cabinet under the counter with towels, but no place to hang them. Hard to recycle the towels when you have to wad them up. It was as if they carved this room out of another to eke out a bit more revenue. One of those bathrooms where you have to close the door or open it all the way to use the potty. Yeah. That kind of bathroom. Good shower pressure, though. Another problem: WiFi for some reason is intermittent. I'd be working, solidly surfing, when I'd lose connectivity. This happened about every 10 minutes. Seriously, folks -- resolve this problem! And while the lighting in the bathroom was blazing, the room lighting was by far insufficient. It was a strangely unadorned room, oddly appointed in every way. Slight aroma of public restroom in the lobby. And then there was the awful restaurant. Still, in spite of all that, I'd stay here again perhaps. But I'd want a better bathroom. And another size bed, preferably. And I wouldn't eat at the hideous Colonial Room Restaurant. read more

We stayed a week and loved it. We never had any issues with valet. We normally had our vehicle within 5 minutes (even during spring break) and the staff was very friendly and courteous. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated. And we loved the history of the hotel as well as the convenient location. It's right next to the Alamo and lots of shops, the mall, restaurants, the Riverwalk and lots of attractions. And despite other reviews regarding water pressure we thought it was great..Perfect spring break vacation!! read more

I guess this was sort of a hit and miss place. I understand all The historical aspects of the hotel, but it does smell old. Also the customer service - some of it was great and someone is very very very low grade. I was using one of the bathrooms downstairs in the lobby and the guy wanted to come and clean it and I said I'll be just a moment and then he said loudly - shit. So that wasn't fun. It only takes a few bad apples and an old stinky hotel. It's beautiful and there's a lot to be said about the history and the restoration, But I think for to be over the top good that customer service has to improve greatly. read more

Front desk was very kind. We did, however, ask for someone to bring up a wine opener and had to call 3 times over the course of an hour and 20 minutes until someone brought one up. This was irritating. The hotel was a bit dated-- although I understand that is part of the charm of this historic hotel. But, our carpeting was clearly in need of replacement (big stain by the end of the bed) and our shower needed more cleaning IMO. The Menger, aka San Antonio's haunted hotel, or maybe that's what I hoped it would be. I'm not gonna dock stars for no ghosts showing up, but I was hoping for some paranormal action. Granted, the door to the room at first would not open the first time, it was as if someone was holding it shut. My lady's toothbrush also got thrown off the sink while she was showering, so there are 2 instances of maybe something happening. Anyway, onto the actual stuff people care about. First off, there's no free parking, you have to use the valet service. It's $30 a night, and I had no clue until I got there about that, so that was a bit of a surprise. The room was the cheapest with a double bed, which came out to $108 for a night. This is cheaper than other hotels in the downtown area, but with the valet tacked on, it actually isn't too far off of others, but they might do the same thing with valet, so potential moot point. The room itself was clean, and certainly had that "old" style to it, though that's not necessarily a good thing. No mini fridge, basic tv, and the doors all feel really cheap, like flimsy if that makes sense. Hallways too carry that old look, but not in a good way, more of the outdated, needs an update kind. The first floor is nice, complete a bar, gift shop, and all kinds of old memorabilia that makes you feel like you're in a mini museum. Service was standard, nothing bad there. The pool area has a felt ground all around it which I liked, and it had a hot tub, which automatically is a plus in my book. The location is the best thing about this place, it's right next to the freaking Alamo, and thereby is next to anything in downtown that's within walking distance, as well as the Riverwalk. Everything else though, eh. It's an average hotel but in all honesty, I could've gotten the same at a Red Roof Inn for much cheaper, with free parking. Sure, if you care about the history, potential ghost hijinks, and the old charm aesthetic, go for it. Location, location is the best reason to stay here. Clean hotel and professional staff. Recently stayed here for an anniversary trip that was booked through Priceline. They made sure to follow my room request for a king, instead of a full. The guests in a room nearby were being disruptive in the middle of the night and they sent security up, as well as move us to a quieter location. Very pleased and will be back! read more

What a neat hotel downtown next to the Alamo! Of course it's a little dated, it was built in the late 1800s, but that adds to the charm. There are a lot of neat paintings and antiques to explore throughout the hotel. The staff was among the most polite and accommodating of any hotel staff that I've encountered. They give haunted tours in the evenings and to be honest, the hotel does have a little creepiness factor to it - but that makes it fun, right? read more

Wanted a small getaway and the room they gave me was terrible; there was an old contact lens from God knows when, sitting in the sink. There was a rusted towel sitting around the shower head that I was very hesitant to remove since IT WASN'T MINE. The following morning when I was scheduled to leave the hotel, FINALLY, there was hammering of some sort next door at 7-8 in the morning. Needless to say, it was quite the wake up call that kept me up up until I carried my things out of that forsaken room. I loved this hotel. It was full of history. It will awe you every room you enter. It was like walking back in time. Even the music is jazz/early era. I left passports, fire arm and key bob and when I called to see if they found it, all was turned in and they kept it safe for a week before I could return. Also prime location!!!in between Alamo and Riverwalk. Across the street from the wax museum, Ripleys, etc. I can't wait to come back!!! read more

In town nearby in Austin for work I detoured here not realizing this is a themed hotel, and more importantly so is pretty much all of downtown San Antonio. My problems with this hotel is you cannot control the temperature per room. The quaintness is cute however the thin doors and thin walls aren't. I think you have to be looking for this particular experience to enjoy it. Staff wasn't that friendly. DO NOT STAY HERE. Rumors say that this hotel is haunted. Last night my roommates started speaking to each other in their sleep and 3 am. Then I moved rooms and as I lay my head on the pillow, to my surprise I found a rather large insect. Then I lifted the mattress to check for other insects and found a urine stain about the size of a large golden retriever. This place is old, smelly, has terrible customer service and I would absolutely recommend staying at any of the numerous surrounding hotels in the area before selecting the Menger. read more

Walk out of hotel through river walk mall to river walk to convention center. Less than 4 minutes Great location Hotel was close to restaurant across street from alamo and not far to convention center It is charming historic hotel so the rooms are very dated. The Menger was perfect for our anniversary weekend because of the LOCATION and the art in the lobby and the great front desk staff. I failed to get their names except for Maria Trevino, who has the most engaging laugh and helpful attitude. Came with my girlfriend on a work trip so I can't comment on the rates, but I'm sure the historical element adds unnecessarily to the nightly rate. The first floor and lobby are absolutely stunning, a nice mix of modern and historical pieces, worth walking through even if you aren't staying there. Our room was small but decent. Shower had poor drainage and weak water pressure. Our main issue was the cleanliness. The bathroom had hair in the shower. Most importantly, we found 2 cockroaches when we were packing our stuff. There wasn't food in our room but it's an old building. The locations great but probably worth finding a newer hotel. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Menger this past weekend, we are planning a Company Christmas Party and this is the location we have selected so we went to check it out. The staff was very helpful and had no problems with any of our request for the party ( thank you Doreen). The customer service is the best I have seen and I have stayed at a lot of hotels over the years. While we were there a couple got married in the Victorian Lobby( how many times do you see that) that should tell you how good the service is. Now to claims of an old smell, I really didn't find it offensive, to me it was the smell of history. If you want fresh and new pick another hotel but if want to stay somewhere that is rich in history and offers a great location and friendly employees the Menger Hotel is an great choice. Their internet was pretty much unusable the whole time I was there. It either would not connect to the router or it would kick-me off just after logging on. What a shame. I remember how nice this place was as a kid. My family never had the money to stay here in the old days, but I used to really enjoy walking through this place when I was younger and visiting the Alamo. My wife and I stayed here on the way down to Corpus, hoping for some South Texas nostalgia. Instead, we were provided with Santa Anna's version of the Grand Budapest Hotel. The service was atrocious from the get go: we had to carry our own bags, the lobby smelled like an old bowling alley (cigarettes and Miller Lite), and the front desk staff was rude. we called the front desk and room service lines to ask for a blanket and we received no response. I went down to the front desk to ask for a blanket- no staff. I rang the bell and a front desk clerk came out of the back. I asked for a blanket and was given some attitude after I reminded him that no one answered our room calls downstairs. I spoke with the manager about it the next morning and he was very accommodating to the situation and apologized. read more

On September 28, 2013, I used the Menger valet and they didn't lock my vehicle, so someone stole all my birthday gifts and other items. Woke up a year older at their hotel and with less stuff. 3 years later I get a letter saying that the statute of limitations on my claim has expired. Funny how I started the claim within a few weeks of the incident, but with the person handling it retired, the new person didn't deal with it either. They offered no apologies or compensation of any kind. Won't EVER stay at the Menger again! read more

This place is absolutely disgusting. When my family walked in there were cups on the floor, and there was a thick scent of smoke. We continued walking into the restaurant and the carpet smelled of smoke, old food, and something else that was absolutely disgusting. The waiter greeted us, and since we were a little early for our reservation we walked around and decided not to eat at this restaurant. We did not stay at the hotel, but from the look of the hotel on the lobby. I would not want to stay here. If zero stars was an option, that would be the review that I give. Also, there is a cigar lounge right next to the restaurant. This hotel may seem impressive at first glance. But if you take my advice, it would save you a great amount of money. We ended up eating at Morton's and there is absolutely no competition. read more

I've been able to stay at the Menger a few times in my life. Each time has been great, and there's really no where else I'd want to stay in San Antonio. The last time was probably the best. We wanted two nights, but they didn't have any rooms available for two nights, so they booked us for one night into a suite at the regular room rate. It just so happened that the suite was the Evelyn Raper Suite. That's the room right under the hotel's name with the balcony overlooking Alamo Plaza. It was especially fortuitous because the night was drizzly so we couldn't really get out. The balcony allowed us to sit outside while my daughter excitedly watched all the carriages go by. Had it not been for that, I'm sure we would have had a way-too-bored child on our hands. read more

I was very excited to stay at the Historic Menger Hotel. I was a little disappointed with the room. As other reviewers stated the shower was probably the worst I have used in a while. The room could have been cleaner. I even had to ask for another room after my first was not clean and had men's beard hair all over the sink. The staff was quick to correct the issue and gave me another room promptly. I was informed it was unacceptable and was not made to feel like I was being picky. I was not crazy about the room, shower, bed, or room temperature. I am giving this hotel 4 stars because the staff is incredible. From the front desk to the bar to the spa to the valet and the restaurant. Not one staff member was just okay. They were kind, caring, quick, and made my stay. Horrible expierance with the parking situation!!! The valet supervisor told me "that's to bad" in reference to the parking. I was prepared to pay $20+ tax per car for the valet plus tip this was not a hand out complementary parking.. I reserved the Sam Houston room for a quiet intimate breakfast with friends and family 04/17/19. I came in from out of town, the Mayor of Sabinal, Texas was a honored guest as well. I am a business man, I know and understand the values of excellent customer service. I was so embarrassed, my family and guests were told "come back in 45 minutes or more if you want" also they were told "the valet parking was only for the resturant and not events." The struggle with the valet staff caused my guests to be 52 minutes late. The food cold!!! Hundreds of dollars were spent for this event, just to be treated like second class trash! Do not insult my intelligence by giving me this "Historical Hotel landmark" crap either! My attorney is going to write a letter to the corporate office 1859 Historic Hotels Ltd in Galveston, in regards to the treatment we received. I personally have a weak heart and suffer from a variety of health issues! I absolutely did not need to be treated like I was worthless and unintelligent . The supervisor with his substandard customer service stressed me out! This was very disheartening! I will make it my personal objective to let every single person, business, and associates globaly, aware of the absolutely, disgusting treatment I recieved by the Menger staff. I expected more from the Menger!! Which is why I chose the location. Unfortunately, I was absolutely embarrassed and disappointed!!!
