This is my second time at Menya Raizo, they are a small little ramen restaurant that don't have too many options but everything they have is super delicious! I got a reservation beforehand which was a good idea because they were pretty crowded. Also, they are pretty small so not a good spot for a big group, I would say 6 max! I got their spicy vegetarian miso ramen which had spicy vegetarian miso broth, thick noodles, tofu, corn, green onion, cabbage, bean sprouts and chili pepper thread. They had a special deal where you got a mini rice bowl for $2 off with any ramen bowls. So we got their mini vegan curry bowl with the ramen. The curry bowl was good! It was pretty flavourful. Their ramen was also really good!! Super flavourful. My friends tried their spicy tonkotsu miso ramen which was also pretty good too, and really creamy! For drinks I would recommend tried their lychee cocktail for a refreshing cocktail. I wanted to their strawberry milk pudding but they were out so I ordered their matcha sundae which came with matcha ice cream, mochi taiyaki, cereal, black sweet sauce and whipped cream. Starting the New Year with a bowl of hot ramen at Menya Raizo by Zakkushi with good friends. This location has changed hands a few times as a ramen shop: the original was fantastic; second one was not good and this current one is good. Two of us had the combo of Kakata Tonkotsu Ramen with a small bowl of Karaage Don, and the two others had the Kotteri Shoyu Ramen (soya sauce based with chicken broth and thick noodles). Kakata Tonkotsu Ramen is their signature ramen with a rich pork broth, cha-shu, green onions, pickled ginger, mushroom and sesame seeds. The broth was rich and had good flavours and the noodles cooked al-dente. Personally, I didn't like the thin noodles. Once I took a bite of the thick noodle from my friend's bowl, I will choose the thick noodles next time. For those still hungry and for a small fee, you can get an additional bowl of noodles. I was blessed by one of the best bowls of ramen you can find in Vancouver at this amazing creation by Raijin Ramen. It was only luck that introduced me to Raijin Ramen and it was luck again that helped me find Menya Raizo. The tonkotsu ramen was so good! A subtle pork based soup with toppings that all together with the soft and melty cuts of pork made this one of the best ramen experiences I could ever have. We came here around 11:30am on Sunday. We got a table right away. It was not too busy. Servers who are Japanese greeted us at the door and they were very friendly. We reviewed menus and looked at ingredients and then we selected our choices on a piece of paper by circling all the items that we wanted. The sheet of paper or menu was very self explanatory. After we made our selections, one of the servers confirmed our choices and placed an order for us. The ramen came out quickly. We tried the soup base and had a first bite of the ramen and ingredients. Everything was very good. We decided to have a coffee elsewhere otherwise we would have tried one of their desserts. Cool place, the interior design blends traditional aesthetics with some local elements. The hanging lanterns added really nice ambiance. Besides just ramen, the menu features some interesting seasonal side dishes, desserts, and cocktails. You order by circling the items you want on a sheet and handing it to your waiter. I did not try the ramen but instead got some sides to put together a lighter meal. I got the mini vegan curry rice and spicy menma; both were very enjoyable. The curry had the unique hearty sweetness of Japanese curry, the bamboo shoots had a little bit of a kick but were more "vegetal" than extremely hot - just enough heat to be invigorating. The vegetable sides would be a good size to add onto a bowl of ramen, not too big, I finished with a matcha sundae. The red bean mochi taiyaki in the sundae seemed like it was freshly fried and the texture was so good with the crispy crust and chewy mochi. It was a chilly late afternoon, after I visited a dental clinic with my family members I walked along the Broadway and found this ramen restaurant. The interior and vibe was warm and authentic. There were some pictures of the old Vancouver times hanging on the wall. We were hungry so we ordered the Takoyaki and ramen. Like many Japanese-owned restaurant they served with passion and observed the details (so do I observed they observed it, haha). Without a long wait they served the Takoyaki first. As there were three of us I found they gave us one extra takoyaki (total 6 pieces) so we could share them evenly. I really appreciated that. They were hot and very tasty that we finished them within a few minutes. Then the ramen, exceeded my expectation. I ordered the Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen, Yuzu Shio Ramen for my wife and Gyokai Tonkotsu shoyu ramen for my daughter. They all tasted fantastic and especially the Yuzu Shio Ramen did surprised me when my wife let me try it. The balance of the yuzu taste with the Shio soup base was perfect. Previously I tried another ramen restaurant for the same ramen the bitter taste of the yuzu ruined everything. So this is the extra bonus for Raizo. We felt like having desserts after the ramen so we order the parfait and sundae. They were both nicely made and tasted yummy. They made it a fantastic finale for our meal. I was craving for some noodles while driving down Broadway, and stumbled into this ramen place. It's a very small but cozy restaurant, which traditional Japanese decor and service. After sitting down, the host / server gave me a paper menu to select my choice of ramen and toppings. To be honest, it was confusing with different pork broth selection. After choosing the ramen, I learnt that I made a mistake from the server, and she helped to correct it. When she asked if I wanted something to drink, I said just water is fine. She gave me a look, which made me wonder if I should have ordered something to drink...but I really just wanted some ramen, is that okay?! I ordered spicy Hakata tonkotsu ramen, and it came with thin noodles, which is different than what I thought. The bowl came super fast, within 5 minutes after placing the order. The noodle was not completely cooked, you can still see the white part, instead of being translucent. I took a bite, and it proofed my suspicion. It was a bit chewy and I can still taste the flour in the noodles. Maybe that's their style? I wouldn't know as it was my first time visit. I did like the flavor of the broth, and it's pretty spicy for a Japanese ramen place. I'm not sure how busy it gets during lunch or dinner, but I saw some Japanese customers while I was there, and they seem to enjoy the food. If you are in the neighborhood, Feel free to drop by, and try not to drive as parking can be hectic with the ongoing constructions. We went here last Saturday craving some soup noodles. Pho and ramen came to mind so Menya Raizo was our pick. This small ramen joint is the part of Zakkushi group. I remember Menya used to sell Chanpon and Ramen back then. We ordered Yuzu Ramen ($12.50) and Spicy Miso Ramen ($13.50) in soft noodles. Yuzu soup smelled nice and citrusy. I think they simply made the pork soup with tbsp of Yuzu tea. Soup was good, but tasted too greasy impo. Noodle was soft. SMR wasn't worth it. I love this place. I've been here 3 times since I found it 3 weeks ago. Do the math =) The place is decent in size, clean and the service is friendly. I always order Tsukemen if it's on the menu or Miso Ramen. Menya doesn't serve Tsukemen so I got the Spicy Miso Ramen and a side of Ajitama (marinated egg). I always like my ramen spicy rich and creamy and the Spicy Miso Ramen was satisfying. You have the option of getting pork or chicken or half pork and half chicken as protein. The veggies in this type of ramen was generous. The broth was thick and creamy and I dont find it oily at all. Closer to 4.5 but still a great choice for ramen! Ordered their Yuzu Shio Ramen and a gyoza to go today and was greeted by great service and had a delicious ramen for dinner tonight! The ramen itself was light and didnt have much citrus flavour but I liked how it wasnt too oily or salty. The noodles stayed very al dente (my favourite) and the way they packaged the toppings separate from the noodles in a different bowl than the soup made sure that nothing got too soft while travelling home! Their egg was cooked well and I liked the option of pork or chicken or half and half! The gyoza was a little bit disappointing because although it was flavourful, I found it to not have enough filling and the skin was not very crispy (take out may be the result of that). I liked how the wrapping wasnt too soft though as overcooked, soggy gyoza is the worst! Came here during lunch on a Saturday and to my surprise there wasn't a wait. Prior to being sat staff asked me to sanitize my hands and then quickly led me to my seat. Expecting to have ramen on this grey cold Saturday I was surprised to see cutlet dishes and other non-ramen foods. Finally was able to stop by to try the ramen I got the Gyokai Tonkotsu Shoyu ramen because the server said it had some fish stock in the broth which I like The chasu was a thicker cut so it went well with the thick noodles. The soup was creamy and more rich if that's what you like. This will be satisfying as we approach fall and winter. My husband got the Umami Shoyu Ramen. It was a lighter chicken broth but still full of flavor. Its served with pieces of chicken and chasu with thin noodles. The egg yolk was creamy and oozy so for sure a must try! Menya is an old favourite that I keep coming back to. Come for a rich, umami-packed bowl of ramen, and definitely go for the chicken broth options. The chicken broth is the best that I've had in Vancouver, however the other aspects of the ramen, the chashu and the noodle, are simply good, not fantastic. [Tips] - Choose chicken broth over pork broth. More flavourful and jam packed with umami. - The pork chashu is a lot better than the chicken [Dishes] Okonomi Gyoza - I really love the way the flavours combine in this dish. The takoyaki sauce pairs perfectly with the meaty gyoza. I haven't had bonito flakes on a gyoza before, but they're a no-brainer with how the melt in your mouth texture adds to dish. Gyokai Shoyu Ramen - The pork broth wasn't rich enough for my taste, but flavourful enough. The egg and the noodles were nothing to write home about, and the chashu was a little underwhelming compared to other ramen joints. I wouldn't get this again, favouring the chicken broth options. Umami Shoyu Ramen - It has umami in the name, that pretty much sums it up. This dish was almost too much umami and richness. Notice I said almost. The chicken broth is fantastic, although those who prefer a less salty soup, I'd say go for one of the pork options instead. Everything else was the same as the Gyokai Shoyu Ramen. Came and lined up for the 50% off ramen promo like a crazy person. Was it worth it? Heck yeah. I got the fish pork broth ramen and quite enjoyed the noodles' firmness. It's got a fair bit of bite to it if that's your kind of thing. The soup base was pretty good, though after trying some of the toripon broth my friend got I have to say that one is way better! The pork chashu was slightly tough in spots but had a wonderful char to it that kind of balanced it out. The eggs were decent, though not as gooey as I would really like. If they could make the pork a little more tender and the eggs a little softer, this would be an near perfecf bowl of ramen. Finally, I also gave the roasted tea pudding a try, and oh my it was IMPECCABLE. If you like your hojichas/roasted teas this is a must order!!! B saw that Menya Raizo was celebrating their 1 year anniversary with 50% off ramen so we decided to try them out. Didn't realize that they're run by the same owners as Zakkushi and Ramen Raijin. They're close to La Taqueria Pinche Taco Shop, Sushi California and Heritage Asian Eatery. We dropped in on a Thursday evening (around 6:45pm) and there was a massive line. We ended up waiting an hour to get in. The wait would have been quicker and more bearable if the staff were on top of the line outside and seating people properly. They weren't so free tables remained empty for long periods of time. No Japanese efficiency here. Service is friendly although you'll need to flag them down to order and get your bill. The menu consists of 8 ramen options along with a couple appetizers. Happy hour (3:30pm to 5:30pm and 8:00pm to 10:00pm) included cheap pints of Sapparo. You can also get a kaedama refill ($1.00 for half, $2.00 for a full). - Hot yuzu shio ramen ($12.50) - green onion, thin sliced Japanese leek, onion, half seasoned boiled egg, seasoned bamboo shoots and chili pepper thread. This was the better of the two broths; light, refreshing and you could actually taste the yuzu. Can't say I've seen this anywhere else besides Afuri (a location is opening soon in Richmond). Both types of chashu were tender and flavourful. Liked all the toppings and the egg was solid. - Tori-pota ramen ($10.50) - green onion, half seasoned soft boiled egg, onion and nori seaweed. We asked for firm noodles. Thin noodles had a good bite but didn't satisfy me. Chicken broth is made up of 5 kinds of vegetables, kelp, dried shiitake mushrooms and Japanese soup stock extracted from green tea leaves. Nice that it wasn't salty, decent depth but I didn't want to drink every last drop. - Matcha pudding ($2.80) - matcha was slightly bitter but the kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup) took away from the matcha flavour. - Hojicha pudding ($2.00) - the hojicha was the better of the two puddings. Highly recommend Yuzu shio ramen for dinner. It's not not like the usual problem I often have with ramen-too heavy or salty to finish the whole thing. The soup was delicious and tasty as well. Regularly every single non-vegetarian ramen would come with two pieces of protein. Can do chashu, chicken breast or even half and half. Id personally recommend the chashu rather than the chicken which is a little bit too dry to go well with the ramen. I tried a bit of spicy miso ramen that my friend ordered and it was very delicious, but I believe it was a little strong for me to finish the whole thing. I was sad to see the old Menya close down, I've only done around 5 visits there. However, a new one has replaced it, prompting me to give it a go. They have changed their menu, providing none of their specialty veggie based ramen they had before. Instead, they have decided to move towards traditional flavours such as shio, miso, shoyu, and tonkotsu. I got seated immediately for ramen on a Thursday afternoon (2pm). I ordered myself a tonkotsu shoyu ramen. The noodles were nice and firm, holding their shape and not overdone at all. The broth was creamy with a hint of shoyu, and what I believe is black garlic oil. It wasn't overwhelmingly rich (compared to Taishoken's broth), but it's still on the rich side with a good depth to it. They only have one slice of chasiu, yet it is tender. The size of the dish is smaller than some other ramen places. I was able to finish it all pretty comfortably with room to spare as a hungry person finishing work. Did I enjoy it? It was decent, but I'm not sure if it should sit at a $12 price point. It felt more like a basic bowl I would get for its size and amount of noodles/meat I got. Perhaps another slice of meat would solve the problem. Lastly, I finished my visit here with a mango pudding made from Yoshida Shoten ($1 promo for the soft opening). I have to say that this is the best pudding I've ever had, and I've had my fair share of puddings. This ramen place may not be right for me anymore, but I did have a pleasant experience here.
