This ramen spot has been around for 15 years! I am teetering between 3.5 and 4 stars, but rounded up. Food - I got the tan tan men and really liked it! This restaurant is about $5 more per bowl than another place down the street and I do agree with another writer that they were skimp on the toppings, but I enjoyed my broth and dish and would eat here again. Service - staff was super friendly. I watched as they helped reccomend ramen to people who were unsure what to get. Ambiance - it isn't very big inside. There is one big shared table and maybe 5 tables for 2? I would imagine in busy times there is a wait. Super authentic ramen. I ordered the shio ramen...it was good, but nothing outstanding that set it apart from other ramen places. I wish it came with an egg, but you had to order as an add-on. The gyoza was delicious, probably my favorite part of the meal! The restaurant is VERY small, seating is very limited. The bathroom situation isn't super great either, there's only one stall and there's not really a place to stand when you're waiting for it. I might be one of the outliers here, but I thought Santouka was just okay. I stopped by on a Tuesday night for dinner at 8 PM and was seated immediately; the restaurant was probably less than half full but still had a cramped feeling due to tables being so close to each other. I ordered the shio ramen, which came with chasu, kikurage, green onion, fish cake, and a pickled red plum. The shio broth was rich and creamy, yet not too heavy; interestingly, it was tonkotsu (pork-bone) based. Shio broths I've had in the past were chicken broth based, which is much lighter in flavor than pork. However, Santouka's was still delicious, just not what I was expecting. The ramen noodles were cooked perfectly with a nice firm chew. There was proportionally a good amount of kikurage and green onion. My only complaint was how thick-cut and chewy the chasu was; it just wasn't a nice mouthfeel to bite through a thick layer of fat. What I do like about Santouka is their extensive menu and the option to choose from three sizes (small, regular, large) depending on your appetite. On a cooler day we found ourselves wanting something warm for our tummies so we ended up at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka .  Vegan Ramen Kara Miso Ramen Miso Ramen The Miso Ramen and Kara Miso Ramen weren't bad but compared with other Ramen that we've tried, they weren't great either. We were here with some visitors from the UK though; compared with what they have in the UK, this was very good Ramen to them. My Vegan Ramen on the other hand, was wonderful! The broth was flavorful, and I loved the option of having Kale noodles in it! For a Vegan Ramen dish, I am tempted to say that this is on par with the Vegan Ramen at Ramen Danbo, which is my current favourite for Ramen . I think Ramen Danbo still has the upper edge as they have more variety of vegan offerings on their menu, other than their Vegan Ramen. At Ramen Santouka the Vegan Ramen seems to be the only Vegan offering on their menu. Great evening meal that hits the spot! Flavourful broth and tasty noodles! Came here after a snowboarding night in Vancouver. It really hit the spot since it's nice and warm with the flavourful broth and there's really nothing that beats slurping noodles. I got the shoyu ramen (soy sauce base) and added a soft boiled egg - which is a must btw. It was the perfect amount of food and super flavourful. My friend got the shio ramen which was not as salty as the shoyu, have a more clear broth flavour and overall I thought was a better choice. I'd recommend both but if I had to choose again, I'd probably go for the shio ramen. Staff are friendly and seated us quickly. Food also came out pretty fast. Great location and even better food. I first visited Santouka around a decade ago and have stopped by regularly whenever I'm downtown. The restaurant can get quite busy and you can end up sitting fairly close to strangers. In terms of food, their ramen overall was excellent - very rich soup base, perfectly done noodles, and the best char siu. We walked around the area trying to figure out which ramen place we liked. We chose Hokkaido and were very pleased. We aren't ramen experts by any means, but to us, this place was great. We chose the Shio and Miso ramen with extra veggies and green onions. The regular serving size was a perfect amount (we didn't finish all the noodles). The noodles and toppings were fresh, bouncy, and the broth...oh my was it good. We sat at the bar, and as we were there, the communal table filled up, as did the remaining tables. I was so hungry that completely forgot to check-in and take pictures. But, I did take one shot just to show an important detail. Will tell you below. I visited on a Sunday for dinner. It took a bit to get greeted even though the restaurant was half empty. However, few minutes later I got an welcome and helped us to get seated. I ordered a large Shoyu-ramen and my wife a small Kara-miso ramen. Taste was pretty good. I like the fact it was not too salty giving me the opportunity to enjoy the miso broth. The noodle was just right firm and ingredients all good to give them a thumbs up. Now, regarding the size. That is something I would like to emphasize. It comes in a 3 different sizes. Small, regular and large. Price difference is only +1.00 or - 1.00. I'll definitely recommend the large one. Believe me is a significant difference. Still a really good bowl of ramen in the downtown Vancouver area but it has been dethroned as the top ramen restaurant on Robson due to steep competition. Santouka is unique in that you are able to upsize your bowl to a large (in lieu of kaedama or noodle refills offered at other restaurants). However, their regular bowl seems a bit on the smaller end. The menu now mentions that customers are able to customize their orders (similar to Danbo's system) but it is not laid out as easily for customers to utilize. The pricing is definitely on the higher end for all of the restaurants - about $15 on average. If they use the same suppliers as their Broadway location, then the noodles come prepackaged and are not made fresh daily. The chashu is a bit thicker than other restaurants but not as tender. The broth Is flavourful but not my favourite among the restaurants. Probably my favourite thing about Santouka is not the ramen itself but the fact that they offer Japanese cream soda floats; one of the few restaurants in Vancouver to have it on the menu. Overall, I would still put Santouka in my Top 3-5 ramen places in downtown Vancouver. Definitely worth considering if the lineups at the other places are looking too crazy. read more

The service is quick and friendly, the atmosphere screams Japan, the noodles have a good bite to it, and the soup base is very flavourful. I ordered the toroniku miso ramen + egg and my husband ordered the shio ramen + egg. Both were very good but the reason I'm only giving this place a 3 star is because the toroniku miso soup base was quite salty and same as the pork cheeks. I shared with my husband so having the shio ramen help balance that saltiness. If I could reorder my meal, I would get the toroniku shio ramen. Other than the saltiness I would give this place a 4 star rating. It's definitely better than your average ramen shops but I'm from Toronto and we got pretty good ramen places there which get the 4 stars. read more

Caught up with a friend for a casual dinner of ramen, or in my case: a significant over-commit with a large serve of delicious ramen . We decided on this spot over the others in the area as it's been at least a couple of years since we dined at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka last. A total surprise that there was no line up when we arrived at about 7pm on a Thursday evening. We opted to sit outside since it was a non-rainy day. Our waitperson was friendly and super-quick with bringing us menus and cups of water. They checked back in once before we were ready to ordered and was so helpful when we had questions, even bringing out bowls to show us the size comparisons for serving sizes. We ordered the tsuke-men and kara-miso ramen both in large with the latter combo-ed up with a grilled salmon bowl. Our meals arrived pretty quickly, were well presented and the broth incredibly hot. Mine was the combination kara-miso ramen (large) + grilled salmon bowl $19.15 + tax + tip: * kara-miso ramen: broth was delicious, a nice chew on the ramen and the chashu was tender; I need to remember to ask for/order more bamboo shoots. * grilled salmon bowl: well-seasoned flaked grilled salmon, well-cooked short-grained white rice Other than wishing their dipping broth stayed hot for longer, my friend had only positive things to say about their tsuke-men (large) $15.80 + tax + tip: Great depth of flavour in the broth and it didn't end up tasting "too salty" even after it cooled down, noodles were cooked well and stayed warm in the bowl for longer than expected. I now know to never order a large serve of ramen here even when I'm really hungry: the noods, broth and everything in the bowl was delicious, but it was a serious over-commitment for me in quantity of noodles. About a third of my ramen and half my grilled salmon bowl went home with me as takeout. If you're tempted to upsize your ramen + rice bowl combo: know that it's a lot of food - those bowls are so deceptively large . Our waitperson checked in on us a few times during our meal even as the dining room got busy and a line started out the door, and somehow also always knew when our beverages needed a top up. We went on a lovely mid morning with my Mr.11, just before 12 pm. There's no line and we were seated right away. Keep in mind that all of the party has to be there in order for you to be seated. We ordered the shio ramen with side of aji tama (seasoned half boiled egg) and Toroniku (simmered pork jowls). Our food came quickly and the broth was piping hot, perfect for a cold day. The broth was rich, velvety, and have layers of flavors, although I found the chasu was on the slightly tougher side, but still very enjoyable. The noodle cooked al-dente and it goes perfectly with the delicious broth. The toroniku is a must get if you like extra meat on your ramen and it's very special kind of meat, very tender and melt in your mouth deliciousness. One of us ordered with fresh tofu added, another with Kim chi, and another with fried tofu. When our food came, the fried tofu veggie ramen was incorrect, it was a meat based ramen with a soft boiled egg. Upon reminding our server of the correct order, she immediately rectified the issue, however; it took over 20 minutes to receive the new ramen and it was not taken off the final bill, nor was a discount offered - disappointing. One of the many ramen places on Robson Street, a friend and I stopped by in the midst of freezing our butts off for a warm meal. We were fortunate to get a spot immediately as it's a fairly popular location from my experience. It always feels like a treat to get into a popular location without a wait. I went with the large sized Toroniku Shio Ramen. Was very happy with the size portions that I got. Plenty of chashu and toppings and noodles for one full meal. Noodles were quite tasty overall and was pleased with it. The chashu was really good. It literally did collapse when I put it into my mouth. The presentation was also nice too as everything aside from the ramen was put on the side and could dabble into either meal without much trouble. That said, I had a huge problem with the broth. Small disclaimer first as I did come in with a bit of a cold. I really couldn't taste a distinctive flavour in the broth. I drank and drank and drank the broth throughout my meal. I just couldn't detect a good taste from it. Might have been from my cold but it was a bit disappointing that this nice meal couldn't be complimented by a nice broth. As well, there was a LOT of oil evident throughout the meal. I don't mind a bit but it felt a bit on the nasty side how much there was. Also a couple minor problems with customer service. When our order was taken, we weren't really asked about how we wanted our dish done. I'm not sure if we couldn't do so at all or if things were busy but it would have been nice to request a bit less oily of a dish from the get go. As well, it was assumed I was paying for my friend as well. We requested to split and my upsize was split between the two of us and that didn't feel correct. Finally after I paid for my half, the bill was taken away and we waited another minute until they realized my friend still needed to pay. Overall, I thought it was still a good meal that was had here. Some nitpicks to an extent and perhaps a couple things going the other way would have made this review a bit more positive. This place is on the main drag of Robson surrounded by many other restaurants and does not really stand out. In fact, we walked right past it because the entrance is so small. They have food models in the window but those do not do the real deal justice. The menu is rather large for a ramen joint and they have a lot of specials ranging in types of ramen and appetizers served to pricing and sizes and they were all well priced. I got a chashu rice bowl and chashu shoyu ramen, large size of course and it was divine. It came out quick, was hot, slaty, fatty, and the noodles, although a bit thinner than I imagined, had a really nice bite to them. I should've ordered a few extra pieces of chashu because it only came with two...but that's on me. The spicy miso wasn't spicy at all but it was good. It wasn't overly salty like how I've had at the other location. Also, you can adjust the lard/salt level. Night one on my recent trip to Vancouver started with a meal at Hokkaido. The lovely Issabelle F sang praises of this Ramen spot to our group, and all of us happily accepted her idea to slurp up some goodness. Hailing from Miami, we unfortunately do not have the best and most extensive Ramen offerings - so I was extra excited to dine at Hokkaido. Upon entering, the space is rather small. No private dining here - you will share a table as spots open up with other, hungry ramen lovers. I loved that. There are communal sauces, bowls, and serving utensils on the table too for when the food gets brought to your table. We started with dumplings, and pickled pork cheek. Damn, that shit was amazing. The pork was so unbelievably tender and melted in your mouth. As for the ramen - I spied that there was some great combo offerings. When on vacay, I like to eat all the things so I went for a combo featuring that Kara Miso Ramen (which is spicy) paired with Ikura which is salmon roe on white rice. I LOVED EVERY BITE. This was some of the best ramen I have ever tasted. The noodles are wonderful, the broth is extremely flavorful. I loved the spicy kick of the kara miso. The regular sized bowl is the perfect portion - some of our party ordered the large - which is HUUUUGE! I love that in Vancouver has servers bring out a credit card machine to charge your bill so that your card never leaves your site. Makes paying in a group a breeze, too! Good ol Santouka! I've been here many times and this is my first review. This place was the most popular ramen restaurant in Vancouver. Everytime I would drive by there would always be a lineup. I guess with all these new ramen restaurants popping up everywhere has probably slowed their business down a bit? Usually when I pass by now there isn't much of a line like before. I find their ramen delicious I always like to get a chasu bowl on the side. It's a lot but I love it. I like a simple ramen I like the Shio classic ramen. I'd also like to mention that I do think their Gyoza is the best in Vancouver. Super meaty juicy full of porky flavour. Soooo good! We almost ordered another! The flavour is really good. I went here last night with a friend after looking for a place for ramen while visiting Vancouver. This place was easy to find and there is plenty of parking on the street. When we walked inside, it was very crowded with what looked like a lot of locals so that was a good sign. Despite of how busy it was, we were seated right away. We ordered pretty quickly. I opted for the vegetarian ramen with tofu added and my friend got the regular pork ramen bowl with green onions added. Our food came out very promptly. It was steaming hot and very flavorful. It was absolutely delicious and I'm still thinking about how delicious the brother tasted. I love the chopsticks on the table for you to use and the bathrooms were clean. My Favourite ramen spot in Vancouver. The price is great as well and you get so much, one can also upgrade to a large for +$1 or small for -$1. I honestly could eat any of the ramens that they have, it tastes amazing and you don't get that full thick feeling you can get from other ramen joints after finishing a bowl of noodles. I was cold and wet and thanks to a recommendation from Atlanta Yelp Elite Michael L, I found one of the two Hokkaido Ramen Santouka locations on Robson St. It is located right next to another restaurant I was wanting to try, but I was determined to get that bowl of ramen. Since it was just me, I got a table for 1 at the bar. There were maybe 4-5 seats available at the bar and for the first part of my meal, I had plenty of room. For $1 less, I got a small bowl of tonkotsu ramen with less lard and sodium - I know, I might have set myself up for failure. The ramen broth tasted a little diluted, as a result, all because of my fear of the broth being too rich. The cha siu pork was tasty and the noodles were chewy. It wasn't the most picturesque or insta-worthy but it was satisfying. Not my favorite ramen, but maybe I ordered the wrong thing. The food was about a 4 but the shitty service dropped it down to a 2. The girls who worked there constantly rushed us for every part of the meal. It made my whole family so annoyed to the point where we couldn't even enjoy the food anymore. The restaurant had a fair amount of people when we arrived but there were still many empty tables. My family wanted an actual table instead of sitting at the bar or shared large table so we waited for them to clean up dishes from a party that just left. The hostess gave us menus to look at before we were seated and not even after 2 minutes later, a waiter came by and asked what we wanted to order. We were still waiting at the front of the restaurant when she wanted us to put down our order. My sister said "can we sit down and get some water first before we order" and the lady gave us a weird face before leaving. Later on, when we were eating the wait staff kept rushing us to take away our plates even before we were done eating. My sister still had noodles in her bowl but the second she put down her chopsticks a waiter came to take her bowl. She had to tell the waiter "no don't take it I'm not done" for her to leave us alone And then for the rest of us, they would try to take away our plates right when we laid our chopsticks down to like they wanted us to leave. The constant sense of urgency and pressure from the staff for us to rush during the meal just made it extremely unpleasant. The service here sucks. This is a really really good ramen spot. I believe this is the case because they "keep to the same standards as Santouka", which must mean something. Getting the ramen + bowl combination is such a great deal especially if you like to mix it up a little with your meal. Broth, texture of the noodles, chasu, and total serving size was perfect for me. The servers came by regularly and were very courteous. Con: it is pretty tight quarters, but this could be nice for those extroverts that end up sharing tables together.
