Extremely disappointed. My buddy and I walked down from Vertical Ventures hoping for good Spanish-style food and left feeling ripped off. Service was slow, and the pricing is absurd for what you get. Two street tacos ran almost $15 each taco was basically just a shell with a finger's-length portion of shredded protein, nothing else. The shredded pork and brisket tasted dry and bland, like they'd been sitting in a warmer for hours. On top of that, the sides are a joke: almost $4 for a tiny, maybe four-bite portion of rice or refried beans, and they even charge extra for sour cream. The rice was cold and under-seasoned, the beans tasted straight out of a can, and there's no lettuce, no pico de gallo, no real options. When I asked about swapping in black beans instead of refried, I was told they simply don't offer that. At these prices, you're paying for the downtown St. Pete location, not the food. This felt like a scam -- tiny portions, upcharges on everything, and food quality that reminded me of something you'd get in prison. I've lived in this area my whole life and won't be recommending this place to anyone, especially tourists in the summer. Given that the previous original red Mesa restaurant here didn't survive either, and that got shut down I understand why. read more

We stumbled upon this spot while walking around Tropicana Field in St. Pete. My son is a picky eater ans when we saw tacos, we knew we had a spot he would at least try. They have all outdoor seating, covered, and tvs playing the local sports channels. This must be a fun spot during game nights. The menu had plenty of choices. My son chose ground beef and cheese tacos. I chose a combinado (combo) of a chicken tamale with salsa verde and a chicken taco. My meal came with rice and refried beans. It was a bit steep for those two meals and two fountain drinks at $32, but it's to be expected near the ballpark. Service was quick and friendly. Amazing place to grab a quick bite. We were headed to Zubrick Magic Show and needed a quick place to grab a bite beforehand. The weather was perfect, this place is only outside seating, so take that into consideration. Their margaritas are top notch. I got the strawberry mint and that was 10/10. My husband got the house margarita and enjoyed it as well. I got a plantain bowl with brisket and it was super filing and delicious. I would definitely get it again. I might try it with a different meat though, I wasn't sold on the brisket. My husband got carnita tacos. He's not a fan of onions so next time he should remember to request it without the onions. He also got a chicken tamale and said it was one of the best tamales he had. Not spicy at all, so I missed out not eating it. We also tried the chips with queso, guac and salsa. All three are good, but there is a lot of food there. If I'm with someone who likes guac I'd get the guac, but if I'm with my husband who doesn't like guac then I'd get the salsa. The food came super fast. It wasn't busy at all on a Saturday night around 6 p.m. Tons of tables and no wait. If I'm in the area, I will definitely come back. This place was fantastic. read more

Overall this restaurant was not terrible there were just quite a few negatives and not many positives. The biggest two positives were that the staff were very nice and they do have hefty portion sizes. However the food was very expensive and had no flavor. It felt like I was eating just plain chicken and plain rice, I had to cover it with their hot sauce (which the hot sauce was solid). All their seating is covered but outside. The bathrooms were so gross and not clean so that was very disappointing. For the price or the food it wasn't worth it and needs some improvement. read more

Red Mesa Mercado is expensive for what it is, but it's a solid spot for tacos or burritos- both if you're wandering Edge District (or getting food to go with beer at Green Bench) or to eat at home. I don't care for the choriqueso burrito (which is odd - it sounds delicious) but the pork verde and chile relleno ones were quite good. Smothered in sauce is delicious but expensive. The street tacos are all great, and I once had an excellent special fish taco. There's a design your own combo meal - the tamales and empanadas are great, but the only taco options available are kind of plain and the rice and beans are on the bland side. I am a fan of their breakfast burrito. And their salsa is great. Definitely a good option for Mexican in St. Pete. read more

We have been to Mercado 2-3 times a month since they opened. We live nearby so it is pretty convenient, but we would not be repeat visitors if the place wasn't good. The atmosphere inside is a bit like a well-lit sports bar because of the TVs above the bar. There are a small number of comfortable booths and tables inside. The patio is very spacious, under a pergola and kites, with overhead fans and pleasant lighting. You can choose where to sit depending on the weather and your preference. It's fast-casual dining, so don't expect china and candles. Food is served on metal pans with paper liners. And when I say fast casual, I really mean fast. The kitchen is well-prepped, so if you're in a hurry, or just really hungry, this place will have your back. The service is great! They hire people who are skilled at making you feel comfortable in addition to being just genuinely pleasant to speak with. They hustle in and out and around so fast that if you try to keep track you'll probably get dizzy. So you are probably wondering, what about the food? We have tried nearly everything on the menu. We weren't disappointed with anything. It's good enough that when we had friends from out of town visiting, this was our casual dinner outing. We bring local friends as well, and everyone has been more than satisfied. So, specific menu items... The appetizer section...The Dip Trio is well worth trying. We usually add a bit of salt to the guacamole, but we devour the salsa and queso. We love the Chicken Taquitos. The three taquitos are served on a bed of lettuce with crema, onion and cilantro. If you order a burrito, be sure to order it Enchilada Style. All three of the sauces are delicious! Sadly, they make the Chile Relleno into a burrito by wrapping it in a tortilla. It's not necessary and, imo, the tortilla detracts from the lovely flavor of the Chile. If you like shrimp, the Tacos Gobernador is a must. I'm not a huge fan of pineapple on everything, but it completes the delicious flavor combo in this taco. This barely scratches the surface of this recent addition to St. Pete's West Side restaurant selection. The thing is, if you're looking for a place that is really satisfying and affordable, Mercado is worth checking out. There's something for everyone on the menu and with the conveniences of plentiful free parking and fast service, it's the place to keep going back to. read more

First visit. The Red Mesa Mercado outside seating area is inviting, but the evening was cold, so we went inside. Unlike most Mexican eateries, no ethnic flags, no sombreros hanging on the walls, just as clean, open, well-lit, rather antiseptic atmosphere. The outside seating is perhaps three or four times larger than the inside area.... and would normally be preferred. Service was prompt. The good: My companion ordered Street Tacos with pork, subbing corn tortillas for the flour, and adding beans and rice for $2.95 more. . She pronounced the food very good. I had the Fajita Bowl with chicken. It comes with beans and rice, and was excellent. Three tortillas are provided, and after filling each there was meat, veggies and beans left over, which I devoured with a fork. The Not-so Good: Everything.... every deviation from the menu (or from tradition) is extra. Chips? An additional $2.75. Salsa? $4.50. Then there's the nettlesome add-ons. Switch from flour to corn tortillas? An extra quarter. I asked for an N/A beer. An extra $0.50. Huh? The food comes on a metal tray like the ones used in a military mess hall, with a thin piece of paper under your food. My Fajita Bowl did come in a paper "bowl" I guess to keep the messy ingredients together. Clean (real) silverware comes in a paper sheath. I suspect the trays are a compromise due to the huge outside seating area. Paper plates would be tacky and would blow around in a wind. Glass or ceramic dishware would be heavy and breakable. Bottom line for us is that the food is good. The bothersome "extra" prices will be tolerated, but not appreciated. read more

Stopped in at Red Mesa Mercado for the first time and loved it! I ordered the quesabirria, which I thought would be tacos at first but it was a quesadilla. I couldn't complain because the quesadilla was a great size, had the perfect amount of meat and the flavor was phenomenal. I also ordered some chips and queso and I have to say, this queso is probably the best queso I've had in a veeeery long time! Apart from their food, their service and drinks were also great. But when I asked for no queso fresco on the watermelon salad, it was shared that the " chef" would not do so, verdad? So what is the difference for no cheese on my tacos than no cheese on my made to order watermelon salad? My 2 grilled veggie tacos were underwhelming in flavor and filling. This location doesn't have indoor tables and it was freezing that time when we ate there, so try to keep that in mind for your future visit. I love all Red Mesa properties, but my experience here was OK at best. I ordered the pork carnitas tacos and they were fine. Very wet, and didn't have much flavor in my opinion. However, they were packed with meat and that I really appreciated! My friend ordered a different set of tacos and hers came out nearly 10 minutes before mine, even though she ordered after me. I think they may have lost my order because when I went up to ask about it, they printed a new ticket. The staff was friendly and helpful regardless! read more

They don't disclose that there's fountain soda and just charge you the Mexican coke off the bat. The Taco bowl chip bowl tasted like the oil they fried it in was old and needed replacing. The Birria was BURNT. Now I've had my fair share of Birria and I know they look a tad burnt but are good but no, this was BURNT. The Birria sauce was very small in comparison to size and quantity of Birria and was very thick. The salsa was watered down. Queso was good. Service was ok. Standard ordering and they'll call your name on a speaker for pick up. For the cost to food and quality ratio, you'll get more food at a hole in the wall small restaurant. 60$ for a taco bowl, birria and chips with queso is nuts.
