Such a great find while traveling! While on vacation in Glacier National Park, we needed to stock up on some basics at WalMart in Kalispell, so we went there after a day in GNP. We are pretty seasoned foodies and wanted a really good meal after several days of being on-the-road. We looked up restaurants in the area to make a reservation on a Friday night and were very fortunate to be able to get one at Mercantile Steak at 8:30pm. We got great street parking right in front of the restaurant, were welcomed by the host/manager and seated at a nice table. The interior is really beautiful with Tiffany chandeliers, dark wood, high ceilings that were gorgeous. They had Live Music which was very nice. It seems like a hip new steakhouse with a cool vibe and nice bar area, booths and tables, rather than an old stodgy feel. Our server, Paige, was very helpful with the menu and specials and attentive throughout our meal, though not obtrusive. We had the most delicious hot popovers (complimentary with a meal) with a seasoned butter that were like heavenly clouds that melted in our mouths. Our meals were so delicious too. I had the salmon special that was a 7-oz fillet with the crispy skin on and in an amazing cream sauce, apples, onions and fennel. It was so good! My hubby had the steak special, a chuck steak with a Bernaise sauce. We ordered two sides to share, the baby carrots and the yummy mashed potatoes. Wow, the portions were huge!!! Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers that we will enjoy during our stay in West Glacier. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert. If we find ourselves back in Kalispell, we'd definitely come back to Mercantile Steak. Great food, excellent service, wonderful ambiance and great value for the money! Pricey and good but in MONTANA, where there are more cows than people, they don't get their steaks locally?!?!? Needs to change. Everything is al a carte but steaks are cooked as ordered and delish with several options for toppings. They only offer one size of filet, no petits. Service was excellent even when busy and lightly staffed-hard workers. No cider on the menu and rotating a vegetable selection like green beans, corn coblets, lima beans etc would be a plus. The puffer bun things are to die for with butter and adding honey would be a nice touch. Huck pie or Cherry in the summer suggested but you won't go wrong anytime you select this fine dining experience. read more

I had the short ribs and my husband got the burger, and both were amazing. The only thing that didn't make it 5 stars was the service. It was ok. We had to ask for the popovers (worth it), never offered a wine list, while we saw other tables doted on. This is the second time I've been to Mercantile Steak. It's been wonderful both times. This time I went with my book club. We had a reservation for eight of us at 5:30 and we were seated promptly. Two of our party had to cancel at the last minute and the host didn't have any problem with that. Our server, Jeff, was out of this world. Even though it was busy (on a Wednesday) he was extremely attentive, always refilling water glasses, taking care of special requests and taking care of our every need. None of the rest of my party had been here before, and you should have seen the looks of surprise on everybody's faces when the popovers came out of the kitchen as the bread course. Everybody loved them. We ordered the stack of onion rings for the whole table and they did not disappoint. For anyone afraid of heat, they are not spicy at all, even though they mention serrano in the description on the menu. Hand dipped, served with homemade ranch and delicious! We all had different salads. I had the green leaf salad and it was delicious. The citrus fruits, avocado, pistachio and vinaigrette all combined wonderfully. There were also good reports on the wedge, the beet salad and the Caesar. For my entree, I ordered got the lobster bolognese. Last time I was here I had the filet and it was cooked perfectly, so I decided to go with pasta this time. It was delicious, much tastier than the photo looks. Great combination of carrot and fennel and tarragon. The lobster was cooked absolutely perfectly, but note - it was not heavy on the portion size of the lobster that was in the dish. The other diners had steaks and very much enjoyed them, one had the steak pappardelle and she really enjoyed it, and one had the fish special, which was a shrimp and pasta dish. I sampled that and it was too spicy for me. We were all too full for dessert and most of us wound up taking leftovers home. One thing to note, it is a very noisy restaurant. One of our diners had to turn her hearing aids off to hear people at the table talk. The live music that started halfway through dinner was very enjoyable, but it made it even harder to hear. Next time I go, I'm excited to try the lobster bisque and the smoked prime rib. This has become my favorite "special occasion" restaurant in Kalispell. read more

And the sherry peppercorn sauce was amazing. My wife ordered the smoked prime rib and it was possibly the softest, most tender, melt in your mouth prime rib we've ever had. We were so looking forward to a good steak dinner. However, when the filet mignon arrived, we found that it was very bland. There was none of the typical taste of an excellent cut of steak fried on a grill. Plus, if you order mushrooms with your steak, the serving is tiny. The steak I buy at Super 1 and cook at home in my eight-inch frying pan is so much tastier. The only good part of our meal was the beet salad. The asparagus was overcooked. The calamari's batter was so thick we could not taste it, and it was covered with a Picante sauce that would not compliment calamari anyhow. My husband's wedge salad was not cut in a wedge but chopped. Also, it had a yogurt dressing when he asked for blue cheese dressing. So, we rate the meal one star because only one item out of everything ordered was good. read more

One of the most disappointing meals I've ever had. Incorrectly cooked steak, mediocre service, bitter greens in the Caesar salad, dry dry mashed potatoes. We took two bites of the mashed potatoes. I even told the server that they were dry and inedible and she didn't apologize or offer to take them off the bill. We ordered our steak medium and one came out medium rare and the other was medium well. The quality of the meat is very good, which is why it gets 2 stars. I wish I could take this quality meat and bring it over to the Montana Club because that meal was a 10/10 despite lower quality meat. Also, the bathroom here is disgusting. It's shared with a bar and has a brown plastic trash can, plastic toilet seats so worn that the white is gone and the brown below can be seen, and just felt cheap and dirty, which is NOT the restroom experience you should have when you're dining at a restaurant with a $200+ bill for two. Friendly service, well priced variety of wine by the bottle, comfortable environment that was upscale enough but not too stuffy. The popovers they bring out in the beginning were an awesome start to the meal. We ordered salads to start and the filet and smoked prime rib. Even though we 100% didn't need it, the desserts are homemade so we went for it. Worth every bite!!! Recommend for date night or family gathering. read more

I'm not sure words can describe the exceptional food and service at Mercantile Steak. Although it was a busy Friday summer night and the tables remained full, we were able to walk in and get a high top table for two. Note: you can do full meal service at the bar too. The warm popover bread and herbed butter is the best way to start your meal. We then had calamari and a roasted beet salad. Both were excellent and the serving size was perfect. For main courses, we went with the Bison ribeye and the pork chop. Both were grilled to perfection, seasoned well and so tender you could almost cut them with a butter knife. For dessert, we had the crème brûlée of the night (orange cardamom) and the chocolate peanut butter mousse. Again, both were pure perfection. We shared a side of brussel sprouts and each had two drinks from the well stocked bar. This incredible dining experience was less than $200! They make great cocktails, have a pretty good wine list without super crazy prices that so many other restaurants seem to do. It's a great, somewhat social atmosphere for everything from a date to an adult birthday party or celebration. The bar is a particular standout. Kudos. Other positives include attentive and polished staff (by Flathead Valley standards), compelling cocktail and wine list, hand crafted popovers once seated, and generally interesting menu selections. Cons: @management I'll be kind but direct. You've got work to do. First, ditch the calamari appetizer. It's genuinely horrid. The batter is excessive and chewy from gluten formation, and seafood comically tiny. Next, please turn down the live music. Literally. I'd like to converse with my dinner companions. Third, your establishment is upscale casual NOT fine dining. Adjust your prices downward accordingly. If not, and you keep prices as-is, then raise the food quality. Because it's lacking at the price point. And introduce layers, textures, and visual interest to your plating and delivery. The current standards are dark and drab. Next, turn down the salt. I actually stopped eating halfway through my last meal due to salt overload. Cheers and good luck. For my part, I dont think another visit is in order unless things change. read more

Dear Mercantile Steak Management & Maitre 'd/host (and a review for Flathead Valley Locals: I had made reservations 1 week prior for our wedding anniversary and we arrived an hour early to our 7pm reservation time to have cocktails. We advised the hostess that we were early & would like to be seated as soon as possible. She said our table was currently occupied but would notify us when table was available. Fine. At 7:10pm, the Maitre'd/host approached us. He said a small 2-top near the kitchen (which was in a bad location and available the entire hour we were waiting) was our table and we could be seated now. If we did NOT like it, we could just have dinner at the bar (?). We took the table he offered and made the best of it. The bartenders who were already slammed, did their best to make our evening special and were definitely professionals and did their best. FOOD- the food was AMAZING and 5 star- from the popovers to the salads & filet mignon with foie gras. MESSAGE to Mercantile Management and Maitre d/Host- word of advice- don't discount the locals. We'll be here for you these winter months, when it's 32 degrees below zero, to support your business. There's no need for arrogant treatment and judgement from your host (older man who was on duty 10/1 around 7pm). Our bill was over $250 for 2 salads, 2 steaks and cocktails. We're locals and enjoy fine dining, and we hope to become regulars. Hopefully your Host will be more welcoming next time when we are spending this kind of $$ for dinner. read more

We've been patrons of the Carlos family restaurants (Abruzzo, Tupelo, Gunsight, & Mercantile) for 7+ years and really never had a complaint until tonight. The food was great. Waiting 35+ min on our reservations without anything more than I'm waiting for another table to leave by the manager was ridiculous. Chick-fil-a will give you free sandwiches/meals/ etc and this restaurant did nothing! We've probably spent thousands with this restaurant group. The manager wouldn't even come and apologize! Poor, poor customer service is why I'm leaving this review. An ounce of preventive measure by the manager could've completely made this review unnecessary. read more

What a pleasant surprise while visiting from out of town. The hotel we are staying at suggested several restaurants including this one. We chose this one for walking distance and the bar. We had the roasted cauliflower for an appetizer and steak and salad for dinner. Silly, but I think my salad was even better than the steak.... The steak was good too though. I loved the laid back atmosphere and the one man performance by Todd Cowart. Our waitress, Paige, was beyond sweet and attentive. We had dinner at the Mercantile for the first time. Service was great, everyone was so friendly and efficient. Decor was nice even if a bit loud from the crowd. Steaks and sides were pretty good, I had to cut the edge from my sirloin due to grizzle, tells me these are probably USDA choice instead of prime cuts. I'm not sure the steaks are truly worth the prices they charge especially a la cart with sides adding another 9 -11 bucks. Overall, a nice dinner date, but we will try someplace else next time probably. read more

OMG. I think the Tuna appetizer might be one of the best things I've ever eaten. Wished I taken a picture of it but was too busy savoring each bite. The fish was fresh and the overall flavor was buttery and an excellent blend of crunch and silkiness. For you whiskey/bourbon cocktail fans, the Panic of 1893 is awesome. The service, cocktails, popovers, and desert made for a perfect and festive evening. Our server Bailey was fantastic; fun, proactive, and professional. I had to make the page for this restaurant because my husband and I loved our meal so much! We stumbled on Mercantile two days after they opened while waiting for a table at Hops. We had a perfect steakhouse experience--my husband got the bison steak and I had the halibut with herb butter, with the loaded baked potato and mushrooms. They're serving freshly made popovers as the complimentary bread plate, which (as a former pastry chef) is a ballsy move, but I hope they figure out the timing because in my opinion they were the best part of an already great meal! It was difficult because the ratings were kind of all over the place for this restaurant but we went for it anyways. First off, make a reservation, that is crucial. The New York strip was amazing, the grilled asparagus was incredible and the potatoes were also amazing. We decided to try dessert and didn't know what to get so we ordered two things, the apricot bread pudding and the peanut butter mousse dessert. Great spot for a date. The fish special (halibut) was incredible. The smoked prime rib though could've been any meat off of any animal... tough, unseasoned, just truly a disappointment unfortunately. The other letdown was the tuna appetizer. Foie Gras was a nice addition but again it lacked flavor, acidity, salt.... Just really fell flat. The popover bread was a huge hit though and I need to make it at home now! The The wine selection is phenomenal and service was superb. We'll be back based on location, ambiance, service and the hope we just caught them on a mediocre night in the kitchen.
